Main Idea and DetailsIntermediate ReadingCCSS: 3-5.RI.2 Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details. Summarize the text.
Review the concept of main idea with students before they complete the station activity. Include a copy of the anchor charts at the station. Be sure to run on cardstock and laminate for durability.

STATION TASK CARD Unit 1 2 3 4 _________________Station Activity Name: Catch the Main idea Standard: Reading for Information Skill/Objective: (COPY IN YOUR PASSPORT) Main Idea Directions: 1. Work alone or with a partner. 2. Choose a glove and read the words aloud. Now find a ball that states the main idea of the words on the glove. Match the two together. 3. After all matches are made, check your work using the Answer Key. 4. Select a set of main idea (glove) and details (ball). Using the words, create a short story or summary of information. Be sure to use complete sentences and correct punctuation.
Challenge: Choose an article from the newspaper or a magazine. Create a “glove and ball” set using words from the article that represent main idea and details.
