Chapter 1 - Answers Discussion Questions

1. The day Katniss and Peeta leave for their Victory Tour to all the districts in Panem.

2. Katniss is hunting for Galeʼs family. She is hunting for them because he now works full-time in the coal mines, therefore he cannot hunt every day. In addition, Katniss is bored and wants to do it.

3. The punishment for hunting in the woods is death.

4. Greasy Sae started a collection and people donated money so they could sponsor Katniss and Peeta in the arena. Katniss does not know which gifts they sponsored.

5. Cray is the Head Peacekeeper. Darius is a Peacekeeper (Katnissʼs favorite).

6. Differences: Looks: Cray is old & has silver hair; Darius is young & has red hair Personality: Cray is gruff & a drunk; Darius is funny, outgoing, nice Occupational: Cray is stricter (but doesnʼt whip); Darius lets more things slide

7. The Capitol concocted the lie that Katniss & Gale are cousins.

8. Katniss & Peetaʼs romance would not be believable if the audience saw this super-cute guy as Katnissʼs only friend. They would assume Gale was Katnissʼs boyfriend & would be disappointed in the whole Katniss-Peeta romance.

9. Katniss now lives in Victorʼs Village.

10. Katniss & Peeta can hardly look at one another--it is strained; although, she admits his voice makes her feel longing, but… “it [his voice] has too much competition to ever win out.” (Referring to Gale. Perhaps foreshadowing? Who knows--her thoughts are so darn conflicting, which is pretty typical of girls this age.)

11. President Snow is waiting for Katniss when she comes home. Good discussion starters for Chapter 2: What do you think President Snow is going to say to Katniss? Is he there because she defied the Capitol by threatening to eat the berries? Or is he there because he knows she has been hunting? What book do you think he is reading?

Chapter 1 - Summary

Begins with Katniss in the woods finishing up a hunt on the day she leaves for the Victory tour with Peeta. We learn that those two still arenʼt speaking, that Katniss & Gale still hunt every Sunday in the woods by themselves, that Gale is working full-time in the mines, that Katniss still helps Galeʼs mother (Hazelle) out by hunting, that the people of district 12 pitched in to be sponsors for Katniss and Peeta, and that even though she believes that Peeta could never win out over Gale, her body still indicates that thereʼs something there between the two of them. It ends with President Snow waiting for Katniss in their study when she arrives home from hunting.

Chapter 2 Answers1. Seeing President Snow in her study is “Like taking the lid off a pot and finding a fanged viper instead of stew.” President Snow is being compared to a fanged viper; his visit is unexpected: like finding something you werenʼt anticipating in the pot of stew.

2. Seneca Crane was the Head Gamemaker for the 74th annual Hunger Games.

3. Seneca Crane has been executed because he allowed both Katniss and Peeta to live and be co-victors instead of killing them both (or letting them eat the berries). President Snowʼs point: Killing them both in the end would send a message to the viewers-”Donʼt mess with the Capitol.”

4. His problem is that many people in the districts didnʼt think Katniss did the berries trick out of love for Peeta; they viewed it as defiance to the Capitol. So they think if a 16-yr. old girl can defy the Capitol & survive unharmed, why canʼt they? So now many districts are probably organizing uprisings.

5. “It must be very fragile, if a handful of berries can bring it down.”

6. Cinnaʼs slogan “Katniss, the girl who was on fire” was prophetic because Katniss has “provided a spark that, left unattended, may grow to an inferno that destroys Panem.” Meaning Katniss may be the one who destroys the nation.

7. He thinks it will just “add fuel to the flames” - start even more uprisings & unrest (because no one would buy that it was an accident).

8. Parcel Day (the first of 12) made Katniss actually feel good about winning the Games because seeing the starving kids with applesauce, meat, candy, and bags of grain and oil at home was her favorite part.

9. When she met first met Gale in the woods (and does every Sunday) for the first time since the Games, Gale kisses her right before he heads back home.

10. Katniss must now convince President Snow that she is in love with Peeta in order to save Gale, but also stop any uprisings.

Possible Chapter 3 Discussion Starters: Will Katniss be able to convince President Snow that she loves Peeta? How? How do you think Gale feels about Katniss? (Does the fact that he said he needed to kiss her “at least once” & pretend it never happened mean that he knows he can never have a relationship with her?) What does Katnissʼs reaction to the kiss (not knowing what it meant or how it felt) mean about how she may feel about Gale?

Chapter 2 - Summary

President Snow “visits” with Katniss. He tells her that her stunt in the arena with the berries is causing many people in the districts to want to start an uprising (if she can get away with defying the Capitol, why canʼt we?). He makes it clear that Gale can be killed if she doesnʼt convince people that her love for Peeta is real. We also learn that she & Gale kissed in the woods & President Snow knows about it.

➵Chapters 3-6 Answers

1. What was the Capitol’s “twist” in the second Quarter Quell? Double the amount of tributes - instead of 24, they had 48 (the year Haymitch won)

2. On pages 43-44, what has Katniss realized about her life? That she will have to marry Peeta, they will have to have a child, and she will never have a life with Gale or be able to not marry anyone.

3. On page 59, how does Katniss feel about Peeta? She feels she couldn’t do any better than him; she realizes what a great guy he is and she should be happy that she is “stuck” with him for the rest of her life.

4. Write a few sentences about how you feel at the end of chapter four. Answers will vary.

5. What are the “small, fat children with wings” Katniss describes on page 64? Cherubs (Paintings or carvings of cherubs--baby angels. Show example of Raphael’s Sistine Madonna with cherubs at the bottom.) Discussion starter: There has been no mention of any sort of religion in the books. Why not?

6. Give specific details about what is going on in District 8. (p. 88)Answers may vary, HOWEVER, details may include: a Level 3 alert has been called, Additional forces have been sent in, textile production has ceased, the people are waving banners of Katniss’s face from the rooftops, there’s a mob scene on the ground, their square is packed with screaming people throwing bricks (who have hidden their faces with rags and homemade masks), buildings are on fire, Peacekeepers are shooting into the crowd--killing people at random, it is an uprising.

7. Earlier in chapter 6 Katniss had formed a new “plan.” With this new information from District 8, predict her next actions. ANSWERS WILL VARY. Things they should consider: Katniss had decided to escape into the wild with her family, Gale’s family, Peeta & Haymitch. Students should recognize that either she will decide to continue on with this plan, or perhaps she will decide to try to form her own rebellion in District 12, just like she saw on the television in district 8.

ANSWER KEY

On page 64 in Catching Fire, Katniss describes the ceiling of the District 11 Justice building in which “small, fat children with wings look down at us from every angle.”

◈ Pretend that you have never seen a cherub before and have no idea what angels, God, and religion are. What would you think of these creatures, considering you live in a place where people die of starvation every day?Answers may vary, but students will most likely write that they are plump, which in Katnissʼs world is a sign that you are doing well--a good thing. Yet, these child angels seem bored, unhappy. Perhaps they will link the fact that when you have everything you could possibly ever want, you still may never find happiness. The people in the Capitol have to come up with more and more outrageous styles, food, entertainment, and still are never satisfied. Those (like the district citizens) can appreciate what they have because they know the value something (like food) by NOT having it.

◈ Why do you think religion has no role in Katnissʼs world? Consider the type of society in which she and the district citizens live. Then think about why people have religion in their lives. Answers will vary. Most dystopian novels are absent of religion

◈ Do you think religion would be good for the district citizens or do you think it would hinder the citizens? Explain. Answers will vary, but here are some pros & cons for organized religion:Pros--provides community, a perspective on life and its meaning, transcendence. Helps

you not be selfish. Provides ethical guidelines. Provides comfort and sometimes healing.

Cons--the teachings can be irrational or random. As the teachings are not necessarily based on reason, religion can make people do stupid things, like the mass murder of war, genocide, and the killing of heretics.

This is one of my favorite quotes that I tend to bring up in class whenever we are discussing morals, ethics, etc. It usually sparks some good discussions:

The ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world that it leaves to its children. ~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Figurative Language in Catching FireAuthor Suzanne Collins uses figurative language in her novel Catching Fire. Figurative language is writing or speech that is not meant to be taken literally. These “figures of speech” include similes, metaphors, personification, and hyperbole. They add interest and color and make the language more exciting and interesting.

simile: A comparison of two things (that may or not be alike) using the words like or as. She is as quick as a fox.

metaphor: A comparison of two unlike things without using like or as. The sun was a furnace.

personification: A type of metaphor in which non-human things or ideas possess human qualities or actions. The wind whistled throughout the night.

hyperbole: An obvious and deliberate exaggeration (to emphasize something or for humorous purposes). I ate a million pieces of cake today.

Read the examples of figurative language below. For each one:

• Identify whether it is an example of: ! A. simile " B. metaphor "C. personification " D. hyperbole• Underline the words that identify it as such. (For simile and metaphor, underline the two things being compared. For personification underline the non-human thing and its human quality or action. For hyperbole, underline the word or words which identify the exaggeration.)

Example: D (p. 8) “But it wasnʼt enough to keep a family of five without Hazelle working her fingers ! to the bone on that washboard.” D - hyperbole; “working her fingers to the " bone” is a deliberate exaggeration.

Chapters 7-9 Answers1. Madge inherited the mockingjay pin from whom? The pin belonged to her aunt (but has been in her family for years).

2. What does the mockingjay bird symbolize? Students should remember from The Hunger Games that the mockingjay is a sign of both survival (or the will to live) and rebellion against the Capitol.

3. Katniss think this was a “funny” choice for a pin, or district token, even. What does she mean when she says “funny”? (Hint: She doesnʼt mean that itʼs laugh-out-loud funny.) Because it is a sign of rebellion against the Capitol, Katniss is puzzled about the mockingjay pin since Madgeʼs father is a government official. “Funny” means “puzzling” or perhaps “strange” in this context.

4. (Pages 91-92) Can you infer anything from this passage about the mockingjay pin?Students may or may not grasp that perhaps Madgeʼs family members (ancestors) were involved in the original rebellion and she and her family are part of a new rebellion. Perhaps they will see this as foreshadowing to a new rebellion. They should recognize that the author made a point to bring up this conversation between the two girls, even though at face value it would seem inconsequential.

5. What is Katnissʼs response when Gale tells her he loves her? “I know.” (She says she is too afraid to worry about any other feeling right now--she doesnʼt want one more complication in her life.)

6. Who did Katniss plan to take with her when she escaped to the woods? Her mother, Prim, Gale, Hazelle, Rory, Vick, & Posy (Galeʼs siblings), Haymitch, and Peeta.

7. On page 114, Katnissʼs mother and Haymitch converse. Her mother asks “So itʼs starting again?” What is she referring to? The citizens being whipped by the Peacekeepers, indicating that District 12 was not always as lax with the rules.

8. What new information do we learn about Cray? He took advantage of young starving girls by paying them for companionship (luring him to his bed).

9. Katniss says something “nettles” her on page 116. What does “nettles” mean and what is it that is causing it? What might you call what Katniss is feeling?Nettles mean to irritate or annoy. The cause is that Haymitch implied that Madge must have a crush on Gale or that something was going on between the two of them & it makes Katniss jealous.

10. Why does Katniss refer to the blizzard as being a “gift” on page 121? So she can buy herself some time to formulate a plan for a rebellion, or start an uprising in District 12.

11. Does Katniss want to love Gale? Why or why not? No. Because it would make life too complicated...especially since she has a rebellion to incite. (I love the quote on page 126: “...I canʼt really think about kissing when Iʼve got a rebellion to incite.”)

12. How has the square been transformed? " 1. Huge banner with the seal of Panem hangs off the roof of the Justice " Building" 2. Peacekeepers in white uniforms march on the cobblestones" 3. 4. The Stockades, Gallows, and Whipping Posts: Obviously, these new constructions in the square are meant for punishment. They most likely foreshadow or symbolize the ___________________________ of a character.

5. Peetaʼs Artwork: His paintings, while beautifully crafted, are painful to see because it relives the recurring ___________________________ that plague both he and Katniss each night.

6. Victory Tour: Even though the name of the tour incites celebration, the Victory Tour symbolized Katnissʼs ____________________________ to convince the districts she did not act out of ______________________________ toward the Capitol.

7. ___________________ʼs four-note mockingjay tune: symbolized not only the end of the work day in District 11, but _______________________ in the arena during the Games.

Part I I , Chapter 10 Questions - ANSWER KEY1. Who does Katniss find in the woods at the cement cabin on the lake? Bonnie & Twill (dressed as Peacekeepers): a woman (Twill) & a girl (Bonnie) who have escaped from district 8.

2. Where are they from and what are they doing at the cabin? They are from district 8 (Bonnie is a girl about Katnissʼs age & Twill her teacher); they escaped after the Capitol blew up the textile factory & are presumed dead. 3. On the night of which event on the Victory Tour did the uprising begin? The night of Katniss & Peetaʼs engagement. (NOT the night that Katniss & Peeta came through on the Tour. That was just REHEARSAL for the uprising.)

4. One is injured. How did he/she get injured? Bonnie has hurt her leg (twisted ankle) because the Peacekeeper uniform boots are too large (was supposed to be for Twillʼs husband) and she twisted her ankle in the woods. So she uses a branch as a crutch.

5. Where are the two people headed? District 13.

6. Why are they headed there? They believe there are people there.

7. For your answer on #6, what evidence do they have, or what are they basing it on? They think people are there because the footage that is shown on TV is old footage (the recurring mockingjay flying off the screen). Further, District 13ʼs industry was nuclear energy, they think the Capitol is too afraid to mess with anyone there because they could have nuclear weapons.

Mockingjay Wafer SymbolAnswer the following questions about the mockingjay symbolism in chapter 10.

1. What does the mockingjay symbolize to Katniss? To Katniss, at first the mockingjay reminded her of her fatherʼs singing, but in the arena it mostly reminded her of Rue (Rueʼs song, signaling safety, and that Rue trusted her because of the pin). In reality, the mockingjay has symbolized safety to Katniss, giving her warnings of approaching danger. She knows that it symbolizes rebellion, but she does not feel as though she is a rebel and certainly not a rebel leader (she sees herself as just a girl trying to survive). Katniss also sees the mockingjay as a species with a will to live--a species the Capitol never intended to exist. In the arena, Katniss surely felt this way--determined to survive. So even though she sees her actions with the berries as a survival mechanism, the people see it as an act of defiance (see below).

2. What does the mockingjay symbolize to Bonnie & Twill? The mockingjay symbolizes the rebellion--defiance toward the Capitol and a symbol to incite uprising. It means that they are on Katnissʼs side. They believe Katniss intentionally defied the Capitol to incite the rebellion, so they are showing not only their support for her & the rebellion, but their participation in it.

3. How has the mockingjay symbolized SAFETY for Katniss not only in chapter 10, but in other parts of the the book? Throughout the series, the mockingjay has served as a warning to Katniss of incoming danger: the warning cry before a hovercraft materializes; her dream of following a mockingjay through the woods (the mockingjay was Rue); the mockingjayʼs “trill” as she nears the electric fence, which is turned on.

4. WHY do you think the rebels have decided to put the mockingjay stamp/symbol on a bread wafer? They can eat it quickly--destroy the evidence if caught. Also, bread is symbolic of rebirth, life itself, and human sustenance.

5. Research other symbols of rebellion in history. Find at least one & share.Crucifix/cross: symbol of Christianity (the mockingjay wafer is also symbolic of Christian communion wafers)Confederate flag: symbol of the Southern states or “rebels” against the UnionPeace sign: used in the 60ʼs-70ʼs to protest war (however, the sign dates back the Nazis and even to Roman times as a symbol of persecution.Swastika: Before Hitler took over the symbol for the Nazi party, the swastika actually meant “to be good” and symbolized anything from life, sun, power, strength, to good luck. Hitler & the Nazi party have changed the meaning (by their adoption of the symbol & their actions) of the symbol to hatred, anti-semitic, violence, death, murder, prejudice, etc.Black Panther: symbol for overcoming racial oppression & in the 60ʻs mascot for the Black political party (Lownes Co., AL Freedom Organization for voting rights & BPP-Black Panther Party for Self-Defense in California); was the symbol for the US Armyʼs 761st “Black Panther” Tank Battalion during WWII; symbolized the “mother of kings and protectors of the people” in Nubian history; Native Americans felt the black panther symbolized healing & through your dreams, a way to face & overcome struggles of oppression.Tea: Boston Tea Party, 1773 - rebel against the BritishThere are so many more...possibilities endless. Give credit for effort.

Chap. 11 Answer Key

1. What obstacle does Katniss face when coming back from the woods? The fence is turned on, so she cannot crawl under it to get back into District 12. She has to climb a tree, go out on a branch that hangs over the 20 foot fence & drop into a snow bank.

2. How does Katniss injure herself and where are her injuries? She injures herself from dropping from the tree branch sneaking back into district 12. She hurts her left foot, heel, and tailbone when she fell to the ground.

3. What was Katnissʼs alibi to the Peacekeepers waiting for her at her home? She claims that Prim gave her the wrong directions to the Goat Manʼs house so she could talk to him about getting Lady pregnant. Then she picked up supplies (bandages & candy) in town to further cover her story.

4. What project does Peeta help Katniss with? Katnissʼs project is to further (in her motherʼs book, in which her dad added info. about edible plants) draw more plants & describe which ones are edible & which are poisonous, but she needs Peeta to do the drawings exactly.

5. How has the Capitol manipulated the TV coverage? They superimposed a woman into the old footage of District 13.

6. What do we learn about District 3? They are suffering graphite shortages.

7. PREDICT what is in District 13: Answers will vary.

What can you infer about the following:

1. Why hasnʼt the Capitol/President Snow wiped out District 13 if people are living there?Students should INFER that because of the information about District 13 producing nuclear energy, it could be too dangerous for the Capitol to blow it up--perhaps they are afraid the survivors & their offspring have created nuclear weapons that could blow the Capitol off the map.

2. What is most likely the cause of shortages of graphite in District 3? There is probably an uprising in district 3, which would be why there are shortages of graphite.

ANSWER KEY - Chapter 121. What new information is learned about District 4 through Octaviaʼs complaints? They havenʼt been able to get seafood from District 4 because of “bad weather.”

2. What can you infer from these complaints? Itʼs not really “bad weather” causing the shortage of seafood--itʼs that theyʼve probably had an uprising there, too.

3. Which districts have there been suspicions or rumors of uprisings? Districts 3, 4, 7, 8, and 11.

The Quarter Quell…4. A new twist on the Hunger Games was created for the Quarter Quells. For each one, write what that “twist” was AND the reason the Capitol gave for it.

The 25th Anniversary ! The districts had to hold elections to vote for tributes. & 1st Quarter Quell !

! Reason:! ! To remind the rebels that their children were dying " " " " because of their choice to initiate violence.! !------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The 50th Anniversary ! Twice as many tributes were reaped. (This is year & 2nd Quarter Quell ! Haymitch won - Maysilee Donner died.)

! Reason:! ! As a reminder that two rebels died for each Capitol citizen" " " " during the rebellion.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The 75th Anniversary ! The tributes will be reaped from their existing pool of & 3rd Quarter Quell ! victims.

! Reason:! ! As a reminder even the strongest among them cannot" " " " overcome the power of the Capitol.

5. Why did Katniss believe the rule change for the first Quarter Quell was far worse than the normal reaping? What might this cause between the district citizens?By forcing the district citizens to choose who will go into the arena to die, it forces the citizens to be in control of their fate--they are responsible for the deaths rather than the Capitol. Also breeds hate & resentment between the people. (This is an effective political ploy to distract the people from whatʼs really going on in the government.)

6. Who is Maysilee Donner & what happened to her? Maysilee was Katnissʼs motherʼs friend. Her parents owned the sweet shop. They gave Katnissʼs mom her songbird (canary) after she died.

Chapter 13 Questions - Answer Key1. What shocking news does Katniss learn? Sheʼs going back into the arena for the 75th anniversary Quarter Quell.

2. On page 175, Katniss uses a metaphor to describe the victors: Theyʼre the ones who survived the arena and slipped the noose of poverty that strangles the rest of us. They, or should I say we, are the very embodiment of hope where there is no hope. Explain the meaning of this quote in your own words: The victors represent survival and hope to the district citizens. They are the ones who triumphed against all odds and give the slightest sliver of promise to the oppressed. Without them, what little hope they had could be lost. And people without hope are just bodies waiting to die.

3. What does Katniss ask Haymitch for regarding the arena? Katniss asks him to agree to them saving Peeta this time, not her. She feels Peeta is better with words. He always does the right thing and can move crowds with his words. She believes he is the true mockingjay & he deserves to live so he can help the citizens rebel against the Capitol.

4. On page 180 Katniss thinks she is “Finally clean…”. Besides being physically clean after taking a shower, what other meanings could she be referring to? She is referring to eliminating the poison (alcohol) from her body; figuratively, she could also be referring to cleansing her guilty conscience. She knows that her actions in the past have been selfish & now that she has chosen to save Peeta, rather than herself, she finally feels “clean” or pure.

5. Why does Peeta throw away the bottles of alcohol & pay Ripper off not to sell alcohol? Because he wants to make sure that two of them come home from the games (he is thinking Katniss as victor & Haymitch as mentor) and being drunk will not help any of them toward their goal. He wants to start training like Careers to achieve that goal.

6. What is Katniss going to tell Gale before she leaves? She is going to tell him she loves him & that he meant a lot to her: To let Gale know how essential heʼs been to me all these years. How much better my life has been for knowing him. For loving him, even if itʼs only in the limited way that I can manage.

7. Why doesnʼt she get that chance to say those things? Because they do not let them have their hour of goodbyes; they put them immediately into the cars & head straight for the train station under “new procedures.”

Further class discussion after this chapter: " -What harm could they have done by giving them an hour of good-byes with ! their loved ones? ! -What impact will it have on the victors, not being able to say goodbye to those ! they love? How would you feel, knowing you may never see them again?! -Do you think this rule was for ALL the victors or just district 12ʼs?

THEME: Alcoholism…8. People drink alcohol for many reasons. List as many reasons as you can think of as to why people drink alcohol:

Religious purposes: wine representing the blood of Christ in Christianity; also used in Judaism

Health reasons: Because water was not always healthy to drink, at one time alcohol was a healthier choice. (Medieval Europe, when cholera was spread through microorganisms in water.)

Social instances: family gatherings, sporting events, parties, weddings, other social occasions

Escapism: People use alcohol to self-medicate for various reasons such as stress-relief, loneliness, low self-esteem, to forget (escape) their problems, etc.

Acceptance into a group: Teenagers, especially, may use alcohol to feel socially accepted by a group of peers, or to feel older, or as an act of rebellion

9. Katniss thinks, “This is what it feels like to be poisoned.” You listed reasons why people may use alcohol. In small doses, there can be benefits to alcohol and other substances or drugs. What are some other behaviors people partake in that in large doses are deadly, but in small doses can be beneficial?

The sun--tanning. In small does, sunlight is very beneficial, providing essential vitamin D & also known to enhance our moods. People who live in warmer climates live longer. In large doses, however, the sun can cause danger in the form of sun burns, sun poisoning, and sun cancer.

Botox, which is made from the bacteria that causes Botulism, can be safe in low doses, but obviously deadly in large doses.

Caffeine can be good for you in low doses. Too much caffeine can be harmful. "These are just some examples. You & your students will probably think of many more.

➵S a y i n g G o o d b y e… Katniss doesnʼt get the chance to say goodbye to her family and friends before leaving for the Capitol. She had a lot to say to them, knowing she would not be returning home this time. Write a letter as if you are Katniss to either Prim, her mother, Gale, or Madge, telling them goodbye.

➵Chapters 13-14 Writing Activity - Teacher Suggestions

On page 186, Katniss narrates:

" Since I donʼt plan on making it back alive a second time, the sooner Gale lets me go, the better. I do plan on saying one or two things to him after the reaping, when weʼre allowed an hour for good-byes. To let Gale know how essential heʼs been to me all these years. How much better my life has been for knowing him. For loving him, even if itʼs only in the limited way that I can manage." But I never get that chance.

On page 188 Peeta tells Katniss they can write letters, but she knows she never will:" ...they were meant to go with embraces and kisses and a stroke of Primʼs hair, a " caress of Galeʼs face, a squeeze of Madgeʼs hand. They cannot be delivered " with a "wooden box containing my cold, stiff body.

Katniss wanted to use that opportunity to say goodbye to them, knowing she was going to sacrifice her life for Peeta this time. Students should help Katniss find the words she has such a hard time writing herself.

Letters will vary, but they should include goodbyes and perhaps an explanation as to why she has decided to sacrifice herself to save Peeta this time:" -Because he is much better with words and able to inspire others through his ! speeches. !! -He is unselfish, a born leader, and people listen and respect him. ! -In addition, her death--and martyrdom--will help all of Panem even more in her ! mind.

Chapters 14-15 Answer Key

1. What color is Effieʼs new hair color? Gold metallic

2. Why did she change the color & what is her plan? To match Katniss’s mockingjay pin. She also decides that they (she, Haymitch, Peeta, & Katniss) should all get matching tokens in the mockingjay theme to look like a “team.”

3. Why does the mockingjay pin mean something completely different to Katniss now? It means more to Katniss because it belonged to Maysilee Donner--her mother’s friend and Madge’s aunt--who was murdered in the arena. She has actual ties to this person now; knowing the owner and realizing those ties between them always makes things more meaningful.

4. Why do you think Madgeʼs mother stays in bed with terrible headaches? Answers may vary, but she probably stays in bed because she lost her twin sister in the Games 25 years ago and is still trying to deal with the grief and horrible images that probably haunt her, having had to watch her sister’s terribly gruesome death.

5. Who saves Haymitchʼs life in the arena (and how)? Maysilee saves Haymitch’s life by killing the Career (with a poisonous blow dart) who was just about to slit Haymitch’s throat.

6. What does Haymitch learn about the arena? The cliff at the end of it has an invisible forcefield that throws back anything that goes over the edge; therefore, it can be used as a weapon.

7. How does Maysilee die? Just after she & Haymitch break off their alliance, she is stabbed to death by a flock of candy pink birds with long, thin beaks. The last one skewers her in the neck. He holds her hand while she dies (just as Katniss did with Rue).

8. How does Haymitch win the games? When it is down to just himself and one other tribute, he runs for the cliff. When the other tribute throws an ax at him, he drops to the ground and it soars over the cliff. It bounced back off the forcefield & buries itself in her head.

9. Do you think Haymitch feels responsible for Maysileeʼs death? Why or why not? Answers will vary. Most students will probably see this as part of the reason why he drinks.

10. Why is Katniss now feeling more confident in herself? Katniss is more confident because she sees herself in Haymitch. She realizes now that he is a smart, clever guy and basically did the exact thing she did in the arena. So she sees hope that between the two of them, they should be able to get Peeta home safely.

[Chapter 15]11. Why might people in the Capitol not like these Games this year? People may not like the games because they’ve grown fond of the victors. It’s like when we fall in love with an actor or actress in a TV show & the producers kill that character off. But we get over it. And since the Capitol citizens do not view the victors as real people, but more like “characters,” so they, too, will probably get over it (unfortunately).

12. What is the difference in Katnissʼs Opening Ceremony make-up and outfit from last year? Last year she was the flame; this year she is the embers: hotter, more deadly, and burning from the inside, ready to unleash her fury.

13. What emotional effect does it have that is much different from last year? It empowers her; it tells the audience she is better than them (her morals, what she stands for).

21. What do we find out about Darius? Darius is now an Avox, paired with the red-headed girl.

22. Do you think it is just a coincidence that he and the red-headed girl are assigned to the District 12 tributes? Why or why not? How would it benefit President Snow? Probably NOT a coincidence; most likely President Snow wanted to unnerve Katniss before she goes into the games, just as he probably did the year before with the red-headed Avox girl. It benefits him because the weaker Katniss is, the more likely sheʼll be killed in the arena, along with all of the hopes of the district citizens.

If President Snow purposefully assigned both Avoxes to Katniss, it probably means he has known for a long time that she goes into the woods, and also means that he probably knew her father hunted and gathered in the woods. Which also leads to the assumption that he probably had the coal mine blown up on purpose to send her family a message, which obviously wasnʼt clear enough. Of course, he actually probably had it blown up because perhaps her father, Galeʼs father (who also lost his life in the mine explosion), and others were planning a rebellion...maybe even training their children in the woods to prepare them. So maybe that ties in with why Snow blew it up. (This is just my opinion, so I guess we must wait for book 3 to see if thatʼs true!)

➵Chapters 16-17 Questions - ANSWER KEY1. What does Katniss mean when she thinks, “Peeta wasn’t Hob the way the rest of us were”? Peeta didn’t know Darius like she, Gale, and Haymitch did because Peeta didn’t hang out at the Hob and wasn’t really friends with him. [She assumes that just because she knew him better that it wouldn’t affect him as deeply; however, many people--especially those sensitive like Peeta--can and will feel just as badly as those who are close to the victims.]2. Who does Haymitch suggest they form allies with? Chaff & Seeder, and Finnick Odair. He also says to try to team up with those who might be of use to them (those they can learn from--who are stronger or have unique knowledge).3. Who is Enobaria AND what is she famous for? District 2 female & she ripped another tributeʼs throat with her teeth. She had her teeth altered to have gold fangs at the ends of each one.

4. Which stations does Katniss visit on the first day of training? Circle all that apply:! spear throwing! ! knot tying! ! ! edible plants! fishing" ! ! climbing! ! ! shelter making! knife throwing ! ! fire building! ! ! camouflage! wrestling! ! ! archery! ! ! edible insect! hammock making! ! hand-to-hand combat! weightlifting! slingshots! ! ! sword-fighting! ! boxing!5. Identify the following tributes & characters:

! A. Atala: the head of the training sessions!! B. Woof: the district 8 male

! C. Cashmere: the district 1 female (sibling to Gloss)

! D. Gloss: the district 1 male

! E. Mags: the 80-year old district 4 female tribute

! F. “Nuts & Volts”: Beetee & Wiress, the district 3 tributes

! G. Tax: Archery instructor

6. How does Katniss impress the other victors during the training session? Shoots five pigeons in one round at the archery station.

7. At the end of the first day, who does Katniss want to form alliances with? Mags, Wiress, and Beetee

8. How does Katniss shock the Gamemakers this year? She ties a noose and hangs a dummy from it; then she paints the name “Seneca Crane” on the dummy. He point is that the tributes arenʼt the only ones who are in danger of losing their lives, so are the Gamemakers.

9. What does Peeta do to shock the Gamemakers? Peeta paints a picture of Rue (dead) with the flowers that Katniss put all around her. His effect was to show the Gamemakers that they should be held accountable for all their deaths; they need to feel remorse for what theyʼve done.

10. How do Peeta & Katniss score? Both receive 12ʼs--the highest score possible. Either the Gamemakers felt it was very bold of them and rewarded them with a high score, or they were ticked off and wanted to make them a target for the other tributes.

11. What is the “personal tragedy” that Katniss is referring to on page 243? Her death sentence (issued by President Snow).

12. How does she think she can still give hope to the rebels? By making it clear that she is defying the Capitol right up until her death, she can ensure that her actions will be able to give hope to the rebels--that all their battles have not been in vain (that they have not been fighting for nothing). She can become a martyr for the people to rally around, while Peetaʼs words can give the people additional power & hope. She has finally come to terms with her decision to keep Peeta alive at her own expense and it has empowered her.

13. When the interview coaching sessions are canceled, where do Peeta & Katniss spend their day? On the roof of the training center, having a picnic.

14. Why are Flavius, Venia, & Octavia crying all the time? There wonʼt be a wedding or all those great Capitol events for them to attend. (They are still selfish in their mourning for Katnissʼs impending death.)

15. Explain the meaning of the metaphor: Itʼs so barbaric, the president turning my bridal gown into a shroud... (page 248). (Look up the meaning of “shroud,” if necessary.) A shroud is “a length of cloth or an enveloping garment in which a dead person is wrapped for burial.” He has essentially made her gown-which symbolizes love, purity, and hope-into a dress to be buried in. He is anticipating her death (and Peetaʼs), knowing they will never be able to marry since they will die in the arena. He also dresses Peeta in his tuxedo.

16. Describe the “toasting” ceremony that people in District 12 partake in for their wedding ceremony. After the couple signs papers at the Justice Building & is assigned a house, they go to their new home and celebrate by making their first fire, toasting bread over it, and sharing the bread.

17. Each of the tributes uses their interview time to express their disapproval with the Capitol and the Hunger Games. What effect does it have on the audience? The audience is a “wreck,” meaning they are weeping & calling for change.

18. What does Katnissʼs dress transform into when she twirls? It starts to smoke as she twirls and the wedding dress fabric falls away to reveal a mockingjay: black tiny feathers the color of coal with white patches on her sleeve. Katniss has become the mockingjay.

➵Chapter 17: THEME - Answer Key

Page 250 in Catching Fire (bottom of page) describes what each tribute said. You can discuss with the class that Aristotle had three types of speeches to appeal to particular audiences in ancient Greece:

The Logical appeal is an appeal to reason that you use to convince your audience that your argument is correct. (logos)

The Pathetic appeal is an appeal that works on the emotions of the judges themselves; appeal to the audiences’ sympathies. (pathos)

The Ethical appeal involves playing on the audience's sense of admiration for you; using your credibility. (ethos)

Cashmere: She starts with a speech about how she just can’t stop crying when she thinks of how much the people in the Capitol must be suffering because they will lose the tributes. (pathos appeal)

Gloss: Talks about the kindness everyone has shown him & his sister in the Capitol. (ethos)

Beetee: Questions the legality of the Quell, and wonders if it’s been fully examined by experts lately. (logos)

Finnick: Recites a poem he wrote to his one true love in the Capitol. (pathos)

Johanna Mason: She asks if something can’t be done about the situation, because surely the creators of the Quarter Quell never anticipated such love forming between the victors and the Capitol. It would be too cruel to sever their bond. (ethos & pathos)

Seeder: She quietly professes that in District 11 everyone believes President Snow is all-powerful; yet, if he is all-powerful, why won’t he change the Quell? (Basically hinting to the audience that perhaps he IS NOT all powerful if he doesn’t make the change; using a little reverse-psychology.) (logos)

Chaff: He insists the president could change the Quell if he wanted to, but he must not think it matters much to anyone. (Again, reverse psychology in use here, too.) (logos)

➵Do you think President Snow would change the rule if enough Capitol citizens demanded it? Why or why not? Student answers will vary.

➵Do you think the tributes will carry their dissent toward the Capitol into the arena? If so, how will that change the dynamic of the Games compared to last year or years past?Student answers will vary.

➵Chapter 18 Questions - Answer Key1. What is the difference between how the Capitol citizens will see Katniss’s mockingjay dress and the meaning of it for the district citizens? The Capitol citizens will see it as just a flashy costume change; the district citizens will see it as a sign for the rebellion.

2. Why do you think Cinna designed Katniss’s dress to transform into a mockingjay? (What motivation does he have, being a citizen of the Capitol?) Student answers will vary; Cinna says he channels his emotions into his work, so we have a clue that he is on the side of the rebellion.

3. What two bombs did Peeta drop on the Capitol audience, so to speak? (What two shocking pieces of information does he reveal?) He told the audience that he & Katniss were already married AND that they are expecting a child (she is pregnant).

4. Why, do you think, has Peeta told everyone these things? Student answers will vary; however, they should see that this is Peeta’s way of not only protecting Katniss from a violent death, but eliciting sponsors (and sympathies) for her. By declaring she is pregnant, it reinforces the brutality of the Games.

5. What was the “first public show of unity among the districts since the Dark Days”? All 24 tributes join hands across the stage “in one unbroken line” as the anthem plays.

6. What word does Katniss use to describe how she feels about what Peeta told the audience during his interview? “Empowered.” Have students look up the definition of “empower”: give power or enable someone authority; to make someone stronger or more confident. (My students struggled with the difference between being powerful and being empowered; we went over the fact that being empowered comes from something or someone else--it takes an event or another person to give you that new power.)

7. What advice does Haymitch give Katniss about when she’s in the arena? He tells her to remember who the enemy is.

8. Who is the enemy? The Capitol (President Snow)--NOT the other tributes (this is foreshadowing; he is basically telling her not to be an offensive killer like the Careers; only kill in defense. He doesn’t have to tell Peeta because it is already in Peeta’s nature NOT to kill.)

9. What happens to Cinna before Katniss is launched into the arena? He is beaten to near death right in front of Katniss before she is lifted up into the arena.

10. What is the arena like this year? It is water in every direction.

11. Predict what will happen once the gong sounds for the Games to begin: Answers will vary.

➵Chapters 19-21 Questions - Answer Key1. Do you think Haymitch knew something about the arena ahead of time? Why or why not?Answers will vary. Some clues that he may know include the fact he wanted them to team up with Finnick all along & went ahead & made allies with him anyway even though Peeta & Katniss didn’t want any.2. Do you think Finnick, especially being a born “Career,” is trustworthy? Why or why not? Answers will vary. Students should back up their opinions with facts, however.3. Why is Katniss furious at Finnick after he saves Peeta’s life? She is furious because now she owes him and it will make it all the harder to kill him so Peeta can win. 4. How many tributes died on the first day? 8

5. What message is Haymitch sending Katniss with his first gift? That water can be found by using the spile; that she is going to have to use her brain to figure out his “messages.”6. How do you think Haymitch knew that Katniss would be able to figure it (his “message”) out? Haymitch must have known that Katniss’s father took her out to the woods to collect sap.7. Why does Finnick choose to save Peeta over Mags? Students answers will vary. Perhaps they may say that he was doing it for Katniss (some students have speculated at this point that he has a crush on Katniss & is doing it to help her). Others may say that Mags was old and probably didn’t expect to live long in the arena, anyway. 8. Why does Mags walk into the fog? Answers may vary; perhaps for the same reason as above--she wasn’t expecting to live (volunteered for Annie) and she wanted to let Katniss & Peeta live.9. What purpose did her character serve? Answers may vary. The purpose of Mags’s character is the “sacrificial lamb,” so to speak: the character who dies to show us how awful & evil the antagonist is. She sacrifices herself to save the younger tributes. Rue (& Thresh, and all the tributes) in THG served this purpose.

10. Describe the monkeys: They have orange fur, are about half the size of a full-grown human.11. What effect does the salt water have on their wounds? At first it stings, but eventually, it draws the poison out; the pain of the wound diminishes and it begins to heal.12. Why do you think the monkeys waited to attack them? Why didn’t they attack them right away when they came to the beach? Students answers will vary. Some may guess the real reason (the clock), but others may have other reasons--they are controlled by the Gamemakers and they wait for the right moment (not in a time pattern, though). Do not give away the real reason right away, however, even if someone guesses it.13. Why do you think the morphling woman ran in front of Peeta? Answers will vary; many students at this point will speculate that they are all in on Katniss’s & Haymitch’s plan to save Peeta.

➵Supplemental Mini-ProjectUsing the internet or print resources in your library, look up the healing capacity of salt water. Why does salt water have those positive effects on us?Also look up a netti pot (or neti pot) and saline solution rinse. What positive effects have people noticed after using? Have you ever seen or tried a nasal cleansing? If not, would you try it? Why or why not?

Students should find similar information as the following:From: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1879045/salt_water_healing.html?cat=5

Examples of its use:For thousands of years, people have used salt and water to heal the body. Our bodies, in fact, • Egyptians recorded its effectiveness on wounds. • Hippocrates made use of remedies containing salt. • Roman doctors dispensed drinks and ointments made with salt. • During the Renaissance period, doctors recommended salt baths for skin diseases and itching. • George Washington bought land in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia and enjoyed "taking the waters."

Healing properties:• Anti-inflammatory• Anti-bacterial• Salt or saline not only decreases contamination of a wound, it also encourages the formation of connective tissue and tiny blood vessels - a key to healing.• Is effective for cold or allergy symptoms, sinus congestion, oral health, clearing toxins, and muscle soreness.• Reduction of allergy symptoms/sinus problems with nasal saline rinses

Hands-On Activity???? For those bold enough to try...If students are willing (and should get permission from a parent/guardian), bring a neti pot and saline solution & allow students to use one (wash in between students, obviously). Will definitely want to do this in an area where you have access to a sink & drain, or bring a big bucket. Or do outside, if possible, like we did. (Yes, I know it’s unorthodox. But the kids love it!)Even if no one is willing to use the neti pot, have students taste the salt water solution & if anyone has a cut or wound, have them drizzle some on it.Topic for discussion...Do you live near a source of salt water? If so, perhaps your students already know the benefits of salt water. Here in the Midwest, my students were surprised that salt water had so many healing properties. I bring up the fact that those who wear contacts use salt water every day (saline) and doctors/hospitals do, as well. We cry salt water in the form of tears. Babies are encased with a saline-like solution in the womb until they are born. Students could research other examples if you wanted to go more in-depth. Perhaps a cross-curricular unit with a science teacher??

ANSWER KEY for Chapters 22-231. Who saves Peeta’s life from the monkey attack? The morphling woman from District 6.2. How does Peeta comfort this person? He holds her, strokes her hair, and talks to her about his paint box at home--all the colors he mixes. He knows exactly what she loves and how to make her transition into death as positive and peaceful for her. It shows he is intuitive of people’s feelings, what they need or want to hear.3. How has Katniss’s attitude toward Finnick changed? She was willing to kill him yesterday, and today she allows him to be the watch guard as she & Peeta sleep. She knows she owes him for saving Peeta, and knows she can never repay him.4. What does Katniss ask Haymitch for? She asks him for something to help with the itching of their skin (if he’s not too drunk). He sends a thick, dark ointment.5. What is it made of? The thick, dark skin ointment is made of tar and pine needles, and has a pungent smell.6. What effect does it have on their skin? It stops the itching, but turns their skin a “ghastly gray-green.” Finnick comments it looks like Katniss is decomposing. (p. 316)7. What is their next gift AND what message is Haymitch sending Katniss with it? Next gift is a fresh loaf of bread and Haymitch’s message is: “Be friends with Finnick. You’ll get food.”8. What happens in the wedge across from them on the beach? A tremble in the ocean (earthquake) causes a large tidal wave to crash into the jungle, killing a tribute in the process.9. Who appears on the beach? Johanna Mason (7), and Wiress & Beetee (3)10. What new information do we learn about Finnick & Mags? She was his mentor and “half his family,” according to Johanna. Not sure if that is meant to be taken as Mags was half of his family, therefore he only has one family member left, or if Mags was a family member perhaps through marriage or very close she was like a family member. Either way, the indication is that she was something more than just a mentor. (And even the mentor connection itself carries weight--Haymitch has become so much more to Katniss than just a drunk mentor.) 11. What other decisions did Haymitch make without Katniss’s and Peeta’s knowledge? He had told Johanna that in order to be allies with Katniss, she had to get “Nuts and Volts” and bring them to her.12. What phrase does Wiress keep repeating? “Tick, tock”13. What conclusion does Katniss reach about the arena? The arena is a clock. (Twelve tolls for 12 o’clock.)14. What “memory” does Katniss recall with the “It starts at midnight” quote? Plutarch Heavensbee showing her his watch with the mockingjay, and talking about his meeting with the Gamemakers about the arena for the Quarter Quell.15. What can you infer from Plutarch’s “tip” to Katniss? Students should be able to figure out or at least have a sense that Plutarch is somehow trying to help Katniss. Perhaps they will think he is an ally to Haymitch. Which could also lead to discussion as to whether or not they think a rebellion throughout Panem is brewing...

Answers to ➵Chapters 22-23 Questions, continued...16. How are Katniss’s circumstances in the Games different from last year’s? This year she has strong alliances, so she doesn’t have to do everything on her own. Even when she & Rue were in an alliance, it only lasted a couple days. Peeta was an ally, but he was so debilitated, Katniss had to do everything for the two of them. Since her father has died, she’s been used to doing everything on her own (except for the times she’s hunting with Gale). It’s definitely a feeling she’s not used to.17. Where do the allies go to be safe from the fog? The Cornucopia.18. Which song is Wiress singing as she cleans Beetee’s wire? Hickory, Dickory Dock (see supplemental page on this)19. Beetee uses a simile to compare Wiress to what? He compares Wiress to a canary in a coal mine--something intuitive that can sense danger before it happens.20. What District 12 disadvantage is Katniss reminded of as she is watching Johanna Mason with an ax? Kids don’t go down into the mines until they are 18 years old, so they never learn the hands-on skills that could possibly help them in the arena (like wielding a pick or blowing things up). Even district 8 had young workers in their factories. She sees this as a disadvantage, whereas we might look at it and see it as an advantage in life--delay growing up to soon, delay the hard, agonizing labor they will have to endure the rest of their lives. If you’re a tribute it’s a disadvantage, but this discussion could lead to all the ways district 12 kids are at an advantage in life (nicer Peacekeepers until recently, don’t have to go into the dangerous mines, etc.). 21. List what each of the “wedges” of the arena indicate (p. 332): twelve tolls for 12 o’clock then lightning strike, blood (1-2), fog (2-3), monkeys (3-4) (See supplemental arena activity for this)22. What happens to the allies at the Cornucopia? The districts 1 & 2 Careers attack--Gloss kills Wiress by slitting her throat. Katniss kills Gloss, Johanna kills Cashmere. Finnick knocks away Brutus’s spear headed toward Peeta and gets a knife in his leg by Enobaria. Then Enobaria & Brutus run down one of the spoke paths and get away.23. How did the Gamemakers intervene? The Cornucopia begins spinning, throwing Beetee and the dead bodies off the island and making the rest hold on for dear life. (Students may speculate that it seems odd that the Gamemakers wouldn’t want them to pursue the Careers for even more blood & gore...) 24. Why does Katniss swim frantically to Wiress’s body? To get Beetee’s wire she happened to be cleaning in the water when Gloss killed her. It is clasped in her fingers.25. What conclusion does Katniss reach about why the others are trying to save Peeta, as well? That he can do more to inspire the people of Panem to have an uprising; his words can convince the nation to rebel. She believes that even though his goodness may be reason enough, it’s his combination of goodness (that lends him credibility and gives people hope) and his use of words that can move a country. She cannot fathom any other reasons.26. Do you agree or disagree? Explain. Student answers will vary.

➵Chapter 23 Supplement: Allusion to “Hickory Dickory Dock” Allusions to other works of literature, art, or events in history are often used in literature to summarize broad, complex ideas or emotions in one quick, powerful image. Read the different versions of the nursery rhyme “Hickory Dickory Dock.” Think about & discuss:➵Why might Wiress be singing this song? Is it symbolic in any way?➵Who is the mouse? Who represents the clock?➵Why wouldn’t Katniss know it, but Wiress would? Does being from District 3 make a difference?

➵Chapter 23 Supplement: Allusion to “Hickory Dickory Dock”

Allusions to other works of literature, art, or events in history are often used in literature to summarize broad, complex ideas or emotions in one quick, powerful image. Read the different versions of the nursery rhyme “Hickory Dickory Dock.” Think about & discuss:

Student answers may vary. The following are just speculated responses.➵Why might Wiress be singing this song? Is it symbolic in any way? Wiress is finally happy that they figured out what she knew all along--that the arena is a clock. As far as symbolism, in the second version the mouse runs up and down the clock, and after the tolling of the bell, has to flee, scamper, fall, or split to get out of there. In the first version, other animals do the same. One could say that the tributes are acting like the animals/mouse based on what time it is.

➵Who is the mouse? The tributes. Who represents the clock? The Gamemakers (or the Capitol)

➵Why wouldn’t Katniss know it, but Wiress would? Does being from District 3 make a difference? Perhaps being from District 3, and their industry is electronics (and inventing things), they worked with clocks or making time pieces, so this would have been a song they may have sung to their children. Katniss, being from a coal mining district, had the valley song she sang, which would perhaps reference things someone from a “city” district (like 8) would not understand.

➵Chapters 24-27 ANSWERS1. What effect do the jabber jays have on the tributes? Emotionally wrenching. Hearing their loved ones screams take its toll, and not being able to escape the screams leave them drained.

2. Whose screams does Finnick hear? Annie Cresta’s.

3. How does Peeta convince them the screams aren’t real? They have reached the final eight, which means they’ll be interviewing their family and friends. So the screams from Prim had to be fabricated because the country loves & adores Prim & the Capitol may have an uprising if they killed Prim. (Stated by Johanna in a sarcastic manner toward the Capitol.)

4. Why will Katniss never be able to think of Johanna in the same way (top of p. 347)? Katniss has a new respect for Johanna because she taunts the Capitol; she admires her guts.

5. What do they witness from the six-to-seven o’clock zone? A beast of some sort has torn a tribute to shreds.

Day Two of the 75th Hunger Games Quarter Quell - Death Toll (p. 349)

District #List the name (if known) or the

gender of the tribute who died on Day 2

If known, write how they died and/or who killed them

1 Cashmere (female) Johanna kills via ax in her chest.

1 Gloss (male) Katniss kills with an arrow through his temple.

3 Wiress (female) Killed by Gloss at the Cornucopia.

4 Mags (female) Katniss isnʼt able to carry her and Finnick canʼt carry Peeta & Mags, so she willingly walks into the deadly

fog to save the others.

5 Female Either from the wave or from the beast.

6 Morphling (female) Ran in front of the monkey to save Peetaʼs life.

7 Blight (male) Hit the force field and died while he & Johanna were trying to bring Beetee & Wiress to Katniss.

10 Male Either from the wave or from the beast.

6. Add the new information you’ve learned to your map of the arena. Students should add the Jabber Jays (4 to 5), beast (6 to 7), and insects (11 to 12).

7. What does Peeta give Katniss on the beach and why? Peeta gives Katniss a locket with her mom & Prim’s picture on one side & Gale’s on the other; the purpose is to convince her that his life isn’t worth saving as much as her own life is. She has others who depend on her, need her. He doesn’t.

8. How does Katniss react? Katniss tries to tell him that she would be damaged beyond repair if he died, that she needs him. But she knows Peeta will come back and argue, so she kisses him & she gets the warm feeling she had in the cave. (Which I like to believe is love.) Continued ➵ ➵ ➵

ANSWERS, continued...

9. What does Katniss imagine for the future at the end of chapter 24? Katniss imagines a world in the future with no Games, no Capitol; a peaceful place where Peeta could raise a his family and they’d be safe.

10. Why does Katniss want to split from the alliance? Katniss doesn’t understand what is going on, so she wants to leave; she is used to having control and being in control of things. This not knowing who to trust is unnerving.

11. What is Beetee’s plan to take out the remaining Careers? Beetee plans to link the tree to the water on the beach so that when the tree is struck by lightning, anyone on the wet beach or in the water would be electrocuted--this would kill Brutus and Enobaria because after Katniss’s group leave, most likely they will come to claim the beach themselves.

12. Katniss describes the sounds of the insects on page 364: “The sound swells, as if alerted by our quiet words to the proximity of live flesh. Whatever is making that clicking, I bet it could strip us to the bone in seconds.” Circle the example(s) of personification. Sound swells (also good use of alliteration); sound being alerted by their words; words alerting & quiet words (words can’t be quiet...humans can speak words quietly, but words themselves aren’t quiet); the insects (or source of the sound) being able to strip the tributes to the bone. Underline the example(s) of hyperbole. The insects (Or source of sound). Is there a metaphor in one of these sentences? If so, what is it (what is one thing being compared with)? Yes: the tributes are being compared to “live flesh.” *Depending on the age/ability of the students, you will want to adjust how many they need to find; perhaps just finding one example is good for a 6th grader, or requiring all for an 11th grader.

13. What, in your opinion, is the significance of Peeta’s pearl gift he gives to Katniss? Answers may vary. Clearly, it reminds Katniss and Peeta of Effie’s blunder about coal turning to pearls, and the symbolism of the two teenagers who represent “Beauty that arose out of pain.” On a deeper level, Katniss sees it as Peeta’s last gift to her, his willingness to sacrifice his life. But even more so, she sees it as her unchanged resolve to make sure he is the last survivor. (See supplement for this, chapter 24.)

14. Katniss thinks, “The time for persuasive gifts is over.” Explain the meaning and context of this thought (p. 366). Answers may vary. Katniss is not going to change her mind and let Peeta die, so he can stop trying to persuade her with gifts (such as the locket and the pearl). But she makes a point, though, in wrapping up the pearl so it makes it back to Prim & her mother so Peeta can have it back. (But she doesn’t mention the locket. I’m not sure why. She would have that around her neck, so maybe because it’s already secured on her. ??)

15. What is Katniss and Johanna’s job in order for the plan to work? They must run the wire from the tree to the beach.

16. How is the plan interrupted as they are carrying it out? As they are running it down, it is severed by Brutus or Enobaria.

17. What did Katniss plan to do with the syringe? She was going to find Peeta and end his life so the Capitol wouldn’t torture him. A mercy killing. (Because she thinks they’ve been captured by the Capitol.)

18. What had the other tributes pledged? They had pledged to give their lives for Katniss and Peeta.

19. Why did Johanna knock Katniss out? She did it to cut the tracker out of her arm so the Capitol couldn’t locate her.

20. Explain this quote: They can pump whatever they want into my arm, but it takes more than that to keep a person going once she’s lost the will to live. Katniss thinks this after she has learned that the Capitol has picked up Peeta and Haymitch has been manipulating them all along. She is saying that you can keep someone alive, but you can’t make them live. If that person wants to die, no amount of food, water, or drugs you give them can bring back their spirit inside that is basically dead.

➵Chapter 25 Supplement

Symbolism of PearlsEmphasis has been added to some of the passages; also, note the asterisk in the

second source, and definition (added) of transmutation.

1. “Pearls symbolize Purity, Spiritual Transformation, Charity, Honesty, Wisdom and Integrity, all the best within us. Pearls provide a clear vehicle for the advancing states of wisdom, as well as a clean channel for receipt of spiritual guidance. Pearls can stimulate your femininity and help with self acceptance. They lift your spirits and make you feel calm and beautiful. They remind us to walk with Dignity." (http://www.sobrietystones.com/resources/GemBook/Stones/meanings_gemstones_pearls.htm)

2. “The pearl is a lunar symbol, also representing water and woman. These primary meanings are seen on a universal scale, throughout mythology. They are attributes of angelic perfection, which is only achieved by transmutation*, and not freely given. Pearls are rare, pure and precious, flawless and white despite being dredged from the mud, coming from a clumsy shell.” (http://www.serapii-kisu.net/essence/symbolism/pearls.php)

*transmutation, as stated in the above reference, means “the action of changing or the state of being changed into another form”

3. “Since ancient times, the pearl has been a symbol of unblemished perfection. It is the oldest known gem, and for centuries it was considered the most valuable. A fragment of the oldest known pearl jewelry, found in the sarcophagus of a Persian princess who died in 520 BC, is displayed in the Louvre in Paris. To the ancients, pearls were a symbol of the moon and had magical powers...The Latin word for pearl literally means "unique", attesting to the fact that no two pearls are identical.” (http://www.pearloasis.com/pearlhistory.html)

4. “Pearls are formed inside the shell of certain mollusks: as a defense mechanism to a potentially threatening irritant such as a parasite inside its shell, or an attack from outside, injuring the mantle tissue. The mollusk creates a pearl sac to seal off the irritation...The commonly held belief that a grain of sand acts as the irritant is in fact rarely the case. Typical stimuli include organic material, parasites, or even damage that displaces mantle tissue to another part of the animal's body...The mollusk, being irritated by the intruder, forms a pearl sac of external mantle tissue cells and secretes the calcium carbonate and conchiolin to cover the irritant. This secretion process is repeated many times, thus producing a pearl.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pearls)

➵Discuss the bolded fields, in particular. How does this information about pearls relate to Katniss and Peeta?

➵Look up the Greek name for “pearl.” Does this girl’s name have a shortened nickname or form? What is the significance of her character, do you think?

➵Chapter 25 Supplement - Teacher’s Key

➵Discuss the bolded fields, in particular. How does this information about pearls relate to Katniss and Peeta?

-Answers will vary. Students should see connections between both tributes willing to die to save the other. Katniss was once egocentric (even though she was selfless when it came to Prim, she did only care about hers and Prim’s survival); her transmutation is into a more altruistic character, willing to give up her life for Peeta and the good of the country. Peeta has always been an altruistic figure, but he passes on this “pearl” - representing all that is good and selfless - to Katniss.

-Another discussion point is the literal formation of a pearl (from source #4). Both are acting as a mollusk: Katniss is protecting Peeta (forming her own protective layers of calcium carbonate and conchiolin, so to speak); Peeta has always been trying to protect Katniss. His “layers” of protection can be witnessed from the time they were 11 when he intentionally burned the bread so he could give it to her. They’ve continued up into the Games, and most recently, telling everyone that she is pregnant. The pregnancy and pearl connection is very strong even literally: the pearl “sac” and embryo sac.

➵Look up the Greek name for “pearl.” (Can probably find it on a baby-name website or baby-name book.) Does this girl’s name have a shortened nickname or form? What is the significance of her character, do you think?

-If students need help for this one, they can simply type in Google this search phrase: “Greek name for pearl” The first web source that should come up is: http://www.thinkbabynames.com/search/0/pearl Within the list of names is “Margaret,” and then ninth on the list will appear “Madge,” a short form of Margaret.

-Students’ theories will vary, but some will see that perhaps Madge’s role is much bigger than we thought. She did give Katniss the mockingjay pin that belonged to her aunt Maysilee. Is she playing the role of protector, or is she a “pearl” to be protected, as well? Was there a movement for an uprising 25 years ago with their parents? What about Katniss’s mother and father? Or Peeta’s dad? Was Madge supposed to go into the arena? OR was Katniss “groomed” by her father (by training her in the woods) to go into the arena all along (with Gale, perhaps, since Katniss’s father could have made these plans with Gale’s father in the mines), but the Capitol got wind of an uprising & blew up the mines? And perhaps Haymitch is now just carrying out her father’s plan? And maybe Gale really was supposed to go into the arena, but behind the scenes Peeta (who may have known the plan all along) insisted on going in to protect her (since he would be a more likable personality on TV for the Capitol audience than Gale). And maybe Madge, her father (and even her mother) have important roles behind the scenes that will be revealed. I do think Gale is in on it, too. Of course, at this point, all we can do is speculate until Mockingjay is released, but I think it is safe to say that Madge will have a much bigger role in the third book.

Well, if you’ve read Mockingjay, you know my predictions were wrong here. Oops! It was fun to speculate, though. And the pearl is still a significant symbol in Mockingjay.

➵Chapter 27 Supplement: Pawns in Haymitch’s Games.. Teacher’s KeyKatniss realizes that she has been just a “piece” in Haymitch’s “elaborate plan.” Used without consent, without knowledge. (p. 385) ➵List all the ways Haymitch deceived both Katniss and Peeta to bring about the rebellion. Then predict what you think will happen in book 3, Mockingjay.

NOTE: This can be done as a group or partner exercise or individually.

Answers will vary, but here are some examples:1. They had planned to break the tributes out as soon as the Quell was announced.

2. Plutarch Heavensbee had been in on the rebellion plans (with Haymitch) for several years--an underground group aiming to overthrow the government.

3. Tributes from 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 11 all knew about the plan: 3-Wiress & Beetee 4-Mags & Finnick 6-Morphlings 7-Johanna & Blight 8-Cecelia & Woof 11-Seeder & Chaff

4. Beetee’s job was blowing up the forcefield.

5. The bread gifts were secret code to let them know the time of rescue (district # was the day, # of rolls was the hour).

6. District 13 really does exist & has nuclear capabilities.

7. The other tributes agreed to die to keep Katniss alive.

8. The other tributes only kept Peeta alive to save Katniss.

9. Haymitch lied to Katniss about letting Peeta be the one to stay alive.

10. He formed alliances with all of them long before Katniss & Peeta entered the arena. (Gave Finnick the bracelet so she would know he’s an ally right away.)

11. He obviously knew the arena set up beforehand.

12. (This is speculation) Most likely, Gale was working with Haymitch since he is picked up on the hovercraft.

13. (This is speculation) Haymitch has probably traveled to District 11 more than just once 25 years ago on his victory tour to know the building so well.

14. (Speculation) He probably made sure Cinna was her stylist to reinforce the fire & mockingjay themes/symbols.

15. (Speculation) He may have even worked with the mentors from district 11 to keep her alive in the first Games.

➵WHO SAID IT? Quotation ReviewRead the following quotations from the novel. Can you figure out who said or thought these quotes?

PART I QUOTES1. “I realize the answer to who I am lies in that handful of of poisonous fruit.”2. “It’s happening! It’s finally happening! If there’s an uprising in District Eight, why not here? Why not everywhere? This could be it, the thing we’ve been--”3. “My advisors were concerned you’d be difficult, but you’re not planning on being difficult at all, are you?”4. “It must be very fragile, if a handful of berries can bring it down.”5. “Brrr. You two have a lot of warming up to do before showtime.”6. “Thank you for your children. And thank you all for the bread.”7. “It can in no way replace your losses, but as a token of our thanks we’d like for each of the tributes’ families from District Eleven to receive one month of our winnings every year for the duration of our lives.”8. “Arenas aren’t built in a day. But the, shall we say, flavor of the Games is being determined now. Believe it or not, I’ve got a strategy meeting tonight.”9. “But mockingjays were never a weapon. They’re just songbirds. Right?”10. “Shouldn’t you look better? Maybe a ribbon in your hair or something? ...Show a little district pride for a change, Miss Everdeen. Hm?”11. “But you’ve got to go through it to get to the end of it. Better not be late.”12. “I couldn’t shake you awake. Look, if you wanted to be babied, you should have asked Peeta.”13. “...you aspire to design your outfit and be like me, your fashion hero.”14. “Really, you’d think we were all criminals.”

PART II QUOTES15. “I’m not going anywhere. I’m going to stay right here and cause all kinds of trouble.”16. “Looks like they’ve got you a matched set this year.”17. “Yes, I think your days of pink lipstick and ribbons are behind you.”18. “...everything will just get more complicated and I really can't think about kissing when I've got a rebellion to incite.”19. “Ah, there she is. All tuckered out. Finally did the math, did you, sweetheart?”20. “You could live a hundred lifetimes and not deserve him, you know.”21. “The point is that two of us are coming home from the Capitol. One mentor and one victor.”22. “It’d be better if he were easier to hate.”23. “Want a sugar cube? They’re supposed to be for the horses, but who cares? They’ve got years to eat sugar, whereas you and I...”24. “This is dreadful. That sort of thinking...it’s forbidden, Peeta.”25. “I just want to spend every possible minute of the rest of my life with you.”26. “I wish I could freeze this moment, right here, right now, and live in it forever.”27. “Remember, girl on fire, I’m still betting on you.”28. “You just remember who the enemy is.”29. “We think people moved underground when everything on the surface was destroyed. We think they’ve managed to survive. And we think the Capitol leaves them alone because, before the Dark Days, District Thirteen’s principal industry was nuclear development.”30. “On the seventy-fifth anniversary, as a reminder to the rebels that even the strongest among them cannot overcome the power of the Capitol, the male and female tributes will be reaped from their existing pool of victors.”31. “I told you exactly...The east entrance...The slag heap next to the east entrance.”32. “Fine. Somebody else can arrange to get the stupid goat knocked up.”

Who will soon kill everyone I love.”45. “If they really killed her like this, they’d probably have an uprising on their hands...Don’t want that, do they? Whole country in rebellion? Wouldn’t want anything like that!”46. “Hey, Haymitch, if you’re not too drunk, we could use a little something for our skin.”47. “Katniss, there is no District Twelve.”

Supplemental Research Projects for Catching Fire:

1. Research the history of clocks. What is the oldest working clock in the world? What does the word “clock” mean? What else can you discover about clocks?

2. Research the use of spiles. Are they used today to extract sap or water, or other forms of liquid, from trees? What else can a spile be used for?

3. Research hovercrafts. How are they made? Is it possible to have one today that can transport people?

4. Draw a map of Panem based on the context clues. (Bonnie & Twill were on their way to District 6, but jumped off the train at a fuel stop & walked to District 12. Those three must be in the same vicinity.)

5. Write your prediction to what will happen in Book 3. Who will live? Who will die? Will the people of Panem be saved from the Capitol?

6. Write a chapter that would serve as a prequel to the series. Imagine Katniss’s parents meeting & falling in love, or Haymitch coming home as a victor from his Games. Be creative.

7. Try to find 10-20 figures of speech that Suzanne Collins uses in Catching Fire. Find as many clichés or idioms as you can. Then research the origins of them.

8. Draw a depiction of Katniss’s wedding/mockingjay dress. The website deviantart.com held a contest for the best drawing of her dress. Look at the entries here: http://hungergamesfangroup.deviantart.com/blog/30657496/Note: You may need to register on the site to view the winners/entries.

Extra for the Teacher:A Lesson in Grammar: Do you use “home in” or “hone in”? (Collins uses “home in” on page 377 in Catching Fire)Here’s a source that offers a good perspective on the topic:http://www.businesswritingblog.com/business_writing/2006/08/hone_in_or_home.html

Notes:*Ermine was a fur used by royalty. Have students research these sites regarding

the ermine and paintings. Can they find any similarities between Katniss and/or the Games and the information they find?

http://f01.middlebury.edu/FS010A/students/n075.htmThe drawing is called Emblem 75 and an ermine is being hunted. Perhaps this is

foreshadowing Katniss’s ultimate participation in the 75th Games. Did Cinna know she would be going in again? Was this somehow a warning to her she would be fighting for her life?Let the class debate it.

http://www.lairweb.org.nz/leonardo/ermine.html -The lady could be around Katniss’s age, perhaps.

*The oldest working clock in the world is the Salisbury cathedral clock in England. Clock is Latin for “bells.”
