Presidents Patter....

Vice President Justin Carmody

Justin was elected as Vice-President in August, 2016. Many cars have passed through

his hands since he got his licence. Justin’s first car was a Mini Minor which he bought when he was 19 years old. Around this time he became an inaugural member of the GNDT (Gumeracha North Driving Team). He and the team member’s hooned around in the paddocks out in the back of Salisbury. Precision driving was one of the things they practised. They’re still alive to tell the tale! The next car he bought was a brand new white Escort. A mate had bought one in 1977 so he followed suit. He was a bit kinder to this car BUT, 4 weeks later, he rolled it!! And what’s more, his mother was in the car! She was covered in “blood” and everyone was most concerned. However, she was covered in red wine which had been in the back. The bottles had broken. An orange Escort with the Sports Pack replaced the white Escort. It was the first of its kind to be registered in South Australia. It was a very good car, a treat to drive and quick! Was there more hooning with the GNDT? Other cars followed: ZP Falcon 2-door Coupe and a 318 Fireball Valiant 2-door Coupe. The Valiant was a brute of a car and heavy on the fuel. Now we begin the history of his ’63 Ford Falcon Sedan. His father bought new. After his father died, his mother bought a Mitsubushi Colt. Justin bought the Falcon off his mother and began restoring it. (Justin bought the Colt to drive around in when his mother died.) The first thing to be done was the engine. He took it to an engine shop to have this done. They suggested a few other modifications and so, it went from there. You all know how that happens. Just a little tweak here and another there and, before you know it, it’s become a full-blown rebuild and your pocket is empty!! Having an accident in it doesn’t help, either. Travelling along Salisbury Highway Justin noticed that there was an emergency ahead. A VW was following him. It ploughed into him when Justin braked hard. VWs have bumper over-riders which ended up under the back of the Falcon. To avoid ripping the bumpers off, they tried to lift the Falcon off the VW. It took quite a large group of bystanders to do this. Justin now drives a Ford Focus. While he admits to being a tearaway when he was young, he believes he has mellowed with age. I don’t believe the GNDT has been officially disbanded, so, is this true? Written by the Halls and PW.

Hi, everyone. Hope you had a good time in September. I know I did. I won the trophy for THE BEST CORTINA at the ALL FORD DAY at Bonython Park. (Thanks to my son, Stuart, who detailed the car the day before.)Thanks to Graham Farrell for organising the day and the display. 23 cars were on our stand. This day is all about what it means to be in a club, particularly, our club – like-minded people, friendships, and having a good time. This was followed by a week’s holiday in Perth. This meant we missed the Bay to Birdwood Run. There was a display at the airport when we left. When we arrived home on 26th September, the display was still there. Our daughter and grand-daughter were going to stand on the side of the road and watch it. We haven’t had a report from them, yet. Barry.

Gordon’s Miscellaneous Mumblings The FOCC constitutional changes have been advertised with the appropriate 28 or more days’ notice. The changes can be voted on during the November meeting. As stated in the information given out I am the messenger and it is up to you as FOCC club members to make the decisions on the changes. That means that you vote them in or out. The FOCC committee of the time have debated the changes with the changes fully debated on and not wanted by some members of the FOCC Committee. It is now up to the members at the November meeting to decide which way the FOCC is to go. I thought that the wild and woolly weather around Balaklava was responsible for the electricity outage Wednesday afternoon. Not that the weather around here was really all that bad. Gill and I eventually got a text from SA Power Network advising us that the power would be off until Thursday 4.00 PM. Late in the afternoon I went off to the local hardware shop looking for a battery powered lantern of some kind. No-go there so it was over the road to the newsagent to buy the last lantern that they had for sale. The sales person had to look in the dark with a torch as there was no external power anywhere. The local Foodland is quite a big effort and because it has the possibility for large amounts of food to go off with no refrigeration they have their own back-up generator and continued with business. Gill and I have an all-electric kitchen so we ended up with luke warm quiche for tea cooked earlier in the afternoon that is before 3.48 PM when the electrical system failed the State. I went to the local “fish and chip” shop for some chips to go with the quiche and they were closed so we had quiche for tea. Around 7.00 PM I cranked up a battery radio and listened to AM1323 until I worked out that they only played music. I then switched to AM891 and started getting information on the scope of the electrical outage and the news was not promising. The ABC station AM891 is an emergency reporting frequency. The AM891 station broadcasts its programs from Sydney Australia wide and when we have an emergency that affects all or part of South Australia the people in ABC SA can override the Sydney output and pass on information needed by the SA population. In that way Gill and I got informed on the electrical status in SA. Around 7.00 AM Thursday the lights came on and the power was back so we got out of bed. It will be interesting to see if SA has a baby boom in 9 months’ time. Early to bed and early to rise is what they say. It seems that three of the high voltage lines out of Port Augusta failed and it was interesting to see how some of the electricity pylons failed. There were approx 24 failed pylons and the ones I saw on TV were twisted and bent about one third of the way to the top and others failed when the pylons stayed intact and were just pulled out of the ground with the holding / setting concrete simply pulled out of the ground still in place on the pylon corners. It seems that the rain had saturated the ground and had softened the ground to the point it where it went to a liquid state and the pylons pulled out easily. We use LPG in 100 lb bottles to run our water heating system. We have two gas bottles that are connected together and we use one at a time. When the gas bottle in use runs out that gas bottle gets turned off and the full gas bottle is turned on. There is also a green / red indicator so that you get a visual indication of what gas bottle is being used. In a bid to reduce Australia’s carbon foot print the only gas water heaters that you can install these days use electricity rather than a “pilot light” for ignition. Quite clearly when there is no electricity there is no hot water to have a shower. I managed my shower OK and the electricity went off again half way through Gill’s shower and it was just a local fail this time and we had the power back before lunch time. I have added more shelf space in the shed in Balaklava and still have a bit of work to do to make the shelves more efficient. I have a lot of half full plastic boxes and if I find the time to do something useful like filling boxes and labelling the plastic box contents I will have a bit more useful shelf space. Gill has filed a request for us to add another bay to the existing shed with the Local Council and if we get that approved that extra bay will go a long way towards getting my gear in the shed better organised and I will have room for a two post hoist as well.

Further changes to the FOCC Constitution. Some time ago the FOCC changed its meeting night from Monday to Tuesday and as a result Parts 16.1 and 18.2 of the constitution need changing. We need a motionto change the day mentioned in the current constitution.

IMPORTANT NOTES In July, Andrew Ford resigned as President of the FOCC. In August FOCC meeting, Barry Hall was elected as President. At the same meeting, members elected Justin Carmody as Vice-President. A reminder to all members; under section 6.1 of the FOCC Constitution, members are required to attend five or more Club meetings or events during the year. If you wish to renew your membership, you must abide by this constitutional rule. It has known that 100 plus members are not meeting the obligation and the committee will be checking all members attendance. # Barry Hall – FOCC President

Club Events

October 2016. I asked at the last club meeting if I could leave October free of events as the All Ford Day and having two events scheduled for November require extra preparation time. Also my eldest daughter is getting married this month and my commitments for this are all consuming. Many thanks to Club members for supporting this proposal.

Ford Invitation Picnic Sunday 6th November 2016

The Early Ford V8 Club of America have, invited us to their Ford Invitation Picnic to be held at the Lenswood Oval, Lenswood. Members have attended this function previously and it’s a great day out. Proceeds from the day will be for the Cancer Care Centre. Please let me know of your attendance. See me at club meetings or ring 82400182. The plan is to meet at Bridgestone Select on Magill Road (just West of St. Bernards Road) for a 10:15am departure OR, meet us at the Lenswood Oval at 11:00am. Yes that means bring out your Ford and join the rest of the FOCC members for a relaxing, social day out. Just a gathering of like-minded Ford nuts.

Yankalilla Cruise Sunday 20th November 2016 Firstly please excuse the incorrect date shown on the internet page regarding this event. The cruise for 2016 will be held on Sunday 20th November 2016. Alice and I have been on two of these cruises and thoroughly enjoyed the whole day. The cruise departs Castle Plaza (on South Road) at 10:00am. Vehicles travel along South Road then via the Southern Expressway to Aldinga, through Myponga and on to Yankalilla. The venue for the day is the picturesque Yankalilla Memorial Park oval. Activities on the oval start at 10:30am. There is no need to pre-register your vehicle for the cruise, just roll up on the day. For all those who intend starting their cruise from Castle Plaza, you may pre-pay for entry to the event. If you pre-pay, you will be given a sticker that will get you fast tracked into the oval. Stickers are available at Castle Plaza @ $15.00 per vehicle which covers all occupants. I suggest we meet up as a club at the Castle Plaza then proceed as a club to Yankalilla where we can set up on the oval and enjoy the day as a group. Please have a look at the site on the internet and let me know if you are interested. There is more up to date information provided on their site and we will be notified of any changes.
