Surely one of the most famous actresses to ever come out of Wales is the beautiful and talented Catherine Zeta Jones. She was born on the 25th September 1969 in Swansea and grew up in the neighbouring fishing village, Mumbles spelt M-u-m-b-l-e-s. Her father was a sweet factory manager and her Irish mother was a dressmaker.

Even from as early as four years old Catherine wanted to perform, although her wonderful singing voice was nearly lost forever when she got a severe viral infection and had emergency surgery, the scar from which is still visible today.

She made her acting debut when she was just 10, playing the lead role in 'Annie' at Swansea's Grand Theatre. By the time she was 15 it was clear to everyone that she had extraordinary talent. Indeed, her school headmaster gave her permission to leave  a year early to move to London and find acting parts in the West End, London's world famous theatre district. It wasn't long before she got the lead role in '42nd Street', but her big chance came when she got a part in a TV series called 'The Darling Buds Of May'. It became the most popular show on British television and Catherine was suddenly a huge star in the UK. However, the paparazzi gave her no peace and in 1995 she decided to move to America where she was almost unknown.

In 1996 she made a TV mini-series about the Titanic, and  Steven Spielberg saw her great performance. He immediately called the director of 'The Mask of Zorro' to tell him about this wonderful new talent. The director, Martin Campbell, gave her a part in the film  along with another magnificent Welsh actor, Anthony Hopkins, and it was a worldwide success. It was while watching this film that Michael Douglas saw Catherine for the first time and he fell in love with her there and then. After only a few months he left his wife and proposed to Catherine with an engagement ring costing $2,000,000!

In August 2000 she and Michael had their first child, a son Dylan spelt D-y-l-a-n, named after Swansea poet Dylan Thomas. They got married in November of the same year.

In 2003 Catherine won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in the film version of the musical 'Chicago' , and a few months later in April she gave birth to their second child, Carys spelt C-a-r-y-s, which in Welsh means 'Love'.
