St. Francis de Sales - Parish Council Minutes November 19, 2020

The St. Francis de Sales Parish Council met No-vember 18, 2020 in person and via Zoom for-mat. Attendees were Pam Matlock, Joe Taranti-no, Tonie Hatton, Niles Nichols, Jennifer Wash-burn and Rachel Ford. The meeting was record-ed. Staff present in person Father Bruce, Jennifer Record, Zach Ault, Maria Korte and Brant Veal. Joe Tarantino opened the meeting with a prayer. The October minutes were reviewed and ap-proved with no additions or revisions. Jennifer presented the financial update. The par-ish revenue is down due to Covid and our ex-penses were up last month. For the year the rev-enue is down $32,000. Fr. stated the attendance is way down which contributes to the revenue shortfall. Joe reported that the Finance committee didn’t meet. He asked if the church had reached out to parishioners who are not making their monthly donations. Jennifer responded that the quarterly reports have been sent out and that generated some positive response. Fr. is considering writ-ing a letter to the congregation and making an indirect appeal, but will look at the subject again in December and January. The good news was the parish hall lighting project is completed and came in $1,000 under budget. The Finance com-mittee meets next in January. Maria Korte reported for the Family and Social Life committee. The family movie night had to be canceled again, but is hopeful that it can be re-scheduled in the spring. Jennifer Washburn gave the report for Education/Formation committee. St. Mary is out this week but starts virtual education November 30. The elementary may be allowed to return December 3 if McCracken County is out of the red zone. The school system doesn’t know if virtual learning will

continue in January. Faith formation follows the St Mary schedule and will meet via Zoom. At-tendance is down. The St. Mary preschool is still open. Niles Nichols gave the report for the Social Jus-tice committee. The committee met. The angel tree will go up after November 28 and because of the increased need would like to have two trees to prevent gathering of people around one tree. For parishioners who are not attending it was suggested that an email be sent to them to schedule an appointment to get angels off the tree. The warming center isn’t open due to Covid, but Sally Michelson is still helping the needy with accommodations in hotels. Tonie Hatton reported for Worship & Spiritual Life. The committee discussed decorating for Advent and Christmas. This year the decorating will be minimal and use live plants. This is due to Covid and the committee will stagger decorating in order to social distance. There was discussion on adding an extra mass for Christmas Eve. The usual schedule of 5:00 pm and midnight with the possibility of a 9:00 or 10:00 to help with social distancing. There will be mass at 10:00 am Christmas day. Brant said there will be no chil-dren’s choir at the 5:00 pm mass. Stewardship committee hasn’t met but is sched-uled to meet in January. The Covid update is to continue with social dis-tancing and masks at church. Fr. Bruce stated he will keep his mask on during church. There will be prayers for people with Covid when the intentions are offered. There will be no Thanks-giving mass because Fr. is still quarantined. In new business we will work on finding a re-placement for Allyn Johnson. Charlie, Janet and Pam’s term on the Parish Council is expir-ing. Pam indicated that she will continue for a second term. She will check with Charlie and Ja-net to see if they will continue. Fr. offered a closing prayer. The next Parish Council meeting will be Decem-ber 17, 2020 at 6:00 pm. Minutes respectfully submitted by Rachel Ford

The SFDS Youth Ministry kiddos worked really hard at a Car Wash this Summer trying to raise money for the Parish Veterans. The youth had a feeling that Covid

would cause the Parish Veterans Dinner to be canceled. In honor of all of our Parish Military and

Veterans a dona on was given to the Hugs project of Western Kentucky. They will use the money to mail out packages to ac ve Military that are away from home.

Thanks so much for your Service and Sacrifice. It has not gone unno ced or unappreciated. God has indeed

    Gospel Reading Matthew 2:1-12

The Magi seek out Jesus and do him homage.

Background on the Gospel Reading By Loyola Press

The visit of the Magi occurs directly before the story of the Holy Family’s flight into Egypt. Matthew’s Gospel tells a version of Jesus’ birth that is different than the one in Luke. Of the actual birth of Jesus, Matthew tells us little more than, “When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod . . . ” The story of the census is found only in Luke’s Gospel, but we hear about the visit of the Magi only in Matthew’s Gospel. We know little about the Magi. They come from the East and journey to Bethle-hem, following an astrological sign, so we believe them to be astrologers. We as-sume that there were three Magi based upon the naming of their three gifts. The Gospel does not say how many Magi paid homage to Jesus. In Matthew’s Gospel, they represent the Gentiles’ search for a savior. Because the Magi represent the en-tire world, they also represent our search for Jesus. We have come to consider the gifts they bring as a foreshadowing of Jesus’ role in salvation. We believe the meaning of the gifts to be Christological. Gold is pre-sented as representative of Jesus’ kingship. Frankincense is a symbol of his divini-ty because priests burned the substance in the Temple. Myrrh, which was used to prepare the dead for burial, is offered in anticipation of Jesus’ death. The word Epiphany means “manifestation” or “showing forth.” Historically several moments in Christ’s early life and ministry have been celebrated as “epiphanies,” in-cluding his birth in Bethlehem, the visit of the Magi, his baptism by John, and his first miracle at Cana.

  • Weekly Faith Discussions—Starting January 11th! **Mondays at 9:00am via Zoom**

The Search Continues is a series of Q&A interviews by Chris Stefanick with

professors from the Augustine Institute. The short videos are based on some of the most searched questions on the internet on the Catholic faith. Each week we will watch one of them and let it spark an informal discussion.

Some of the topics included in this series:

Why is there a pope? What about the apocalypse? Do Catholics worship Mary? What is purgatory? Where did the Bible come from? Why can’t non-Catholics receive the

Eucharist? These conversations will happen using Zoom so you can join from

wherever you are! There is no cost, commitment, or expectations on your level of participation.

The Zoom link to join can be found at https://parishsfds.com/adult-education

Grab a cup of coffee and join in!

The Catechumenate Period RCIA is open to any non-Catholics who have an interest in the Catholic faith. We welcome all questions! We are now in the Catechumenate period, where we will dive into the heart of living out the Catholic faith—the Sacraments.

We will break until Tuesday, January 5th, when we will discuss the Sacrament of Confirmation!

Please contact Zach Ault at [email protected] or 270-442-1923 (ext. 5) with any questions or to join in the conversation!
