St. Francis de Sales Parish Council Minutes for May 17, 2018

The St. Francis de Sales Parish Council met May 17, 2018 in the GLCR. Attendees were Fr. Bruce, Brenden Grant, Tyler Swoope, Charlie Ross, Zach Ault, Vance Shore, Jennifer Record, Allison Meyer, Donna Jordan, and Robert Bryant.

Minutes for the April meeting were approved.

Jennifer gave the Financial Report that showed the total income for April as $58,869.19 and total expenses for April as $62,296.94. The net income for April was -$3,334.35. The Capital Campaign numbers for April were $26,170.40 from pledge revenue, expenses at $5,962.50 and balance to- date at $110,511.82. The Diocese Loan Balance is $490,000.00.

Tyler Swoope reported for the Social Justice Committee. The GoSoccer is going well with more than 10 par-ticipants. The Blood Drive remains scheduled from 8- noon Sunday June 24, 2018. A Red Cross repre-sentative spoke to the committee; its target is set at 30 units. Donors may sign up starting Memorial Day weekend. The Committee estimates it will need 10-15 donors from each Mass to meet its goal. The Mande-ville trip scheduled for 10/24/18 – 10/31/18 has a maximum capacity of parishioners who have volunteered for the trip. In New Business, Dan Kelly told the committee that SFdS will cover two weeks at the warming center next winter.

Charlie Ross reported that the Education Committee met April 23. He said the May 8th potluck for our 4 Can-didates and 1 Catechumen was a success. First Communion was on May 6th and there were 9 First Commu-nicants. On the Adult Education/Formation front, this past year’s course of study was good; they broke the lessons into shorter time commitments, which seems to have worked better for all involved. Discussion about the Parish Youth Ministry involved reviving the teen ministry and involving teens in the Mass. In other busi-ness, the topic of Children’s Liturgy came up. Since we do not have enough Catechists, this ministry has been cancelled. Also, the Lectio Program concludes this week. Vacation Bible School is June 4-8th. Finally, Catechetical Sunday Celebration is Sept. 22/23.

The Stewardship Committee minutes from the May 7th meeting show that 526 families are registered in the database, which is 2 less than the last report. The 2018-19 booklet updates will be ready for the committee to review at the July meeting. The committee agreed to keep this year’s stewardship form each year, with a minor change in the description of pledges: wording will be revised for clarity. The committee discussed the problem regarding ministers not showing up or finding replacements.

Robert Bryant shared with the Council the progress that the Emergency Operations Plan Committee has been drafting a FEMA guided document for our Parish. He stated the EOP Committee has met regularly and identified the hazards to be addressed. Over half of the document is completed and the hope is that after a few more meetings, the committee can submit a rough draft to the council for approval. Once that is complet-ed, a Parish-wide meeting will be held to inform all who are interested.

Brenden reported that WIFI is now in the Parish Hall and Church; it is password-protected. He also listed some “tech projects” for future consideration: The Parish Hall projector has issues with visibility and poor sound quality; our surveillance system needs updating; the “tech hub” is in the basement boiler room and needs a drier location; and the entire sound system needs work on it.

The next meeting is June 21, 2018.

The meeting was closed with prayer.

Minutes respectfully submitted by Donna Jordan.

“They said, ‘Where did this man get all this? What kind of wisdom has been given

him?’” When a person demonstrates unusual intelligence or wisdom, we ask, “Where did they get all that?” And we may be wonder-ing, “Why them and not me?” We tend to ignore the possibility that such people are not only gifted with above average intel-lect, but that they have an open mind and heart to the truth of the realities they observe and recognize new possibilities and the need to change how we think and live. Knowledge is the intellectual ability to understand the world in which we live. Wis-dom is the choice to discern the truth and implications of that knowledge. Knowledge is knowing how to build an atomic bomb. Wisdom is understanding why it should not be used. It is the wisdom of Jesus, not his intelligence, that amazed the people of the small village of Nazareth. Jesus observed the world in which he lived and realized the need for change in the way we treat one another and our world. That is wisdom. Je-sus was not given wisdom. He chose to be wise. Jesus calls us to be wise. What do we choose?
