SCHOOL OFFICE

“This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” (Mark 1:15) If you had but one word from the line above to focus on, what would it be? All the answers of a process called lectio divina might be understood as whispers of God’s voice, promptings of the Holy Spirit. I like to do this to lead to the reflection for a passage that otherwise might just slip away.

With Lent upon us, I must admit my mind was leaning toward “repent” and the affirmation of Ash Wednesday to believe in the Gospel. So, I kept at it, thinking I would come up with a penitential practice or sacrifice that lend to repentance. But a word kept haunting me: fulfillment. Isn’t Lent about “emptying?” our excesses? What is the Lord saying to us? What does fulfillment mean?

ful·fill·ment 1. the act or state of fulfilling: to witness the fulfillment of a dream; to achieve fulfillment of one's hopes.

Now we’re talking. Jesus wants us to fulfill our dreams, the dreams of God that an eternal relationship of love above all things awaits us. But wait, there’s a catch. We have to engage it, embrace it, ask for it. Free will means it must be our idea. Oh.

The world offers many, many distractions that may impair our vision of God. Earning a living, being a good student, caring for family, learning new things demands our time and attention. We are a society that is mobile, on the go. What are we supposed to do, take God with us? Yes, actually. How?

Before you say “prayer,” which is of course a great answer that needs no media or platform, let us put out to deeper water. Finding the time is most often the block to prayer. Conventional wisdom says we must make the time. But what about using the time when we have it for spiritual growth instead of social media growth?

We often speak of “fasting” and “giving up” things during Lent, but we don’t often come forward with the “filling in” part of the hole it leaves behind. Maybe this year we should consider how to “come of age” in a deeper spirituality. How can we deepen our faith in such a busy, chaotic world? Can technology help me do that?

St. Agnes is blessed to be one of the parishes subscribing to a Catholic media platform called “Formed.” There is no charge, but you need to establish a login to begin viewing the content. Go to: www.stagnesparish.formed.org Type in Our Parish Access Code: 8M32BQ (case sensitive.) Make sure to set up the special FORMED app on your phone or IPad. Go to: http://app.formed.org for instructions on downloading the app for your mobile device.

I knew that Pope John Paul II wrote a play called “The Jeweler’s Shop” but was excited to see it was a movie starring Burt Lancaster and Olivia Hussey that you could watch. I started viewing it at home, and finished it on my phone, while waiting for an appointment. Try it! May this Lent be fulfilling in its graces to you! Deacon Bill

STEWARDSHIP DO YOU FEEL BLESSED?

By Donna Roberts

Do you feel blessed as I do? Recently, a child asked me if I was rich, and I gave the same answer that I gave to another person who asked the same question several years ago—”Yes, I am very rich! Every day I have a roof over my head that doesn’t leak, hot and cold running water in my kitchen, an indoor bathroom, central heat and air conditioning, plenty of food in my refrigerator and cabinets, and no bank is trying to repossess my belongings or kick me out of my home. I am employed in jobs that give me great joy and make me feel like a contributing member of society. I am very rich with blessings that so many people in the world don’t have, even people in our local community.” What I forgot to share is that because I feel so blessed, I offer back to God my time and limited talents to help His other children in ways that I am able. I feel sure that child will never again ask me another question! Looking at your own life with that perspective, do you feel blessed? Do you want the opportunity to say Thank You to God for the many blessings he has given you? The Reaching Out Ministry is offering you the opportunity to sign up with one or more of their ministries that help people within our parish and local community who may not be as blessed. Stuffed in this bulletin is a flyer describing 15 different opportunities where your time and talents can be given to help others. Next weekend, February 24th and 25th, representatives from the Reaching Out Ministries will be at tables in the hall after all Masses to help you sign up for these ministries. You have a week to reflect on where God may be calling you to help His other children!

THANK YOU FROM COVENANT HOUSE

Our parish received another thank you for a donation tithed from our plate collections. “Thank you for joining us in our mission to provide sanctuary and supportive services to homeless and trafficked youth in 2017. More than 80% of our funding comes from generous people like you, and every gift makes a difference. Last year, your gifts helped provide more than ever! Accomplishments included 46,991 nights of care and more than 111,000 meals to over 2,300 youth due to the generosity of our community. Most importantly, your generosity provided hope, healing, and a chance for every youth we served to break free of the cycle of homelessness.”
