PASTORAL MATTERSYEAR 8 TO YEAR 9 TRANSITIONIt was a pleasure welcoming the Year 8s on our Transition Days on Wednesday and Thursday this week. Their behaviour was impeccable and it was lovely to see students from all the schools mixing on the playgrounds at break and lunch. Students were treated to a number of exciting lessons over the two days:German/French: Students learnt about animals, masculine/feminine neuter and different verb forms.Geography: Students experienced space learning, where they were asked to look at a case study, followed by a completely different activity, in this case making origami frogs, and then being asked questions about the case study to see what they remem-bered. The students thoroughly enjoyed it.History: Students learnt about Ancient Egyptian medicine.Film Studies: Students discussed Propp’s character theory and then looked at extracts from The Lion King and Batman films.Art & Design: Beautiful eraser drawings took place, which were then changed into fantastic and strange creatures,. This activity really fired up the imagination.Children’s Play: Students watched part of the “Secret Life of 4

YEAR 8 TRANSITION DAY

year olds” and discussed how they would learn about how children grow and learn.Engineering/Product Design: In this lesson students looked at why buildings collapse. They took part in a task in which they supported as much weight as possible on a plywood platform 25mm above the surface of the table. There were some amazing structures!Computer Science: Students had to programme a robot on screen to light up different things.IT/iMedia: Students created a mood board using powerpoint, which sparked a number of discussions about which football team they supported!GCSE PE/BTEC Sport: Dancing was part of this lesson, even though it was in a classroom! Students learnt the bone dance and then had to label a skeleton. They also looked at the A-Z of Sports leadership.Health & Social: Students took part in discussions about working together and watched a clip from BBC’s Casualty to see how the different professions worked together for the benefit of the patient. They also learnt some sign language.Business: Pizzas were on the agenda in the Business department, students looked at the ‘four Ps’ of Marketing and developing their own product.Hospitality: There were fun and games to be had in the Food room where it is the only time students have been told to walk fast - with the Silver Service relay. Students were taught how to use silver service to serve food and, once proficient, they had a relay race. There was lots of fun and laughter to be had!Music/Drama/BTEC Performing Arts: Students were informed about the differences between Drama and Performing Arts. They were also treated to clips of productions that students have put on previously and some of our current Year 9s shared their experience of music and drama.Citizenship: Students looked at how celebrities make a difference and how the students can make a difference at Saint Augustine’s Catholic High School.Luckily the sun was shining and I managed to watch a game of Powerball in practical PE. This is like rounders, but with a football and using the legs instead of a bat to score points. The students really enjoyed it. Overall it has been a fantastic couple of days and I wish the Year 8s a pleasant summer and look forward to welcoming them back in September. Ms Mason, HOY 9 & Transition leaderYEAR 9The penultimate week of term has seen us welcome what will be our new Year 9 students to Saint Augustine's with two transition days on Wednesday and Thursday. Time has flown by since our current Year 9s made their journeys up from middle school to prepare for their first year. It is pleasing to see how much the students have matured and how they have grown into independ-ent young people with a drive to achieve. I would like to say a big thank you to the Year 9 students who have supported Ms Mason with her transition day - your input on these two days has been extremely valued. Next week Year 9 are expected in school every day until they finish on Thursday for the summer. DRAYTON MANOR TRIPOn Monday, the majority of Year 9 will be attending the Drayton Manor trip. For this trip, they will be allowed to wear non-school uniform and will arrive back at school at the later time of 6.00pm. Pick ups from Saint Augustine's will have to be arranged for this time as the buses will not be running. Students not attending the Drayton Manor trip are expected in school at the normal time and will leave at 3.50pm. Students in school must wear school uniform.

HEALTH AND WELL BEING DAYTuesday is Year 9 Health and Well Being day. A number of activities linked to Pixl Edge have been arranged for the day. Students must wear school uniform, but will need to bring full PE also. Students will arrive and depart from school at the usual times. SPORTS DAYWednesday is sports day at The Abbey Stadium. Students should arrive to school at the normal time wearing full PE kit. Students should ensure that they bring all relevant medication; epi-pens, inhalers etc, have a water bottle, which can be re-filled at The Abbey Stadium if required, a packed lunch and also should ensure that they are prepared for the weather conditions as appropriate. Students will not be allowed to leave directly from The Abbey Stadium - they will be transported back to school where they will leave school at the normal time of 15:50pm. Buses will run as normal. LAST DAY OF THE SUMMER TERMOn Thursday students will arrive to school in normal school uniform at the usual time. Students will attend celebratory Mass before leaving school at 12:30pm. Buses will be running at that time for those who use this as their usual mode of transport. YEAR 10DUKE OF EDINBURGH BRONZEFirst of all congratulations to the 28 students who passed their DofE Bronze expedition this week. The assessor was full pf praise for our students who battled heavy rain on one day followed by soaring temperatures on the second day. Behaviour was wonder-ful over both expeditions well done. WORK EXPERIENCEI hope that those students out on work experience are enjoying this week and learning about the world of employment. WELL-BEING DAYPlease be aware that all Year 10 students will need to bring their PE kits on Monday, 17th July for their Well-being day. Mr Mill, Head of Year 10

THE CATHOLIC LIFE OF OUR SCHOOLPRAYING EACH DAY: ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY…On Wednesday of this week, 12th July, was the date on a school report of Winston Churchill, who later became Britain’s leader during the Second World War. Churchill was bottom of the class, and a Mr Davidson, his housemaster at Harrow School, wrote on his report: “He is forgetful, careless, unpunctual, irregular in every way… If he is unable to conquer this slovenli-ness he will never make a success…” Some people tend only to judge others and criticise them, never seeing anything positive in them. Mother Teresa said: “If you judge people, you have no time to love them.” Let us prayLord, I ask that you inspire me always to do my best - not comparing myself with others, but only with myself. Lead me, Lord, to discover and use my own talents to the full. May I live in such a way that I help others to experience success, as well as praising them for the good use of their abilities - looking not so much at the degree of achievement but at the effort put in.

Page 4: Catholic High School & Sixth Form Centre Our Lady of ... · Film Studies: Students discussed Propp’s character theory and then looked at extracts from The Lion King and Batman films

Stop me from judging people or jumping to conclusions about them, but lead me to respect and accept others for who they are, focussing on the positive rather than the negative. AmenCATHOLIC LIFE LOGO COMPETITION

At the beginning of June, we launched the Catholic Life Logo Competition, where we wanted the students to come up with a logo that embraced the Catholic Life of our school which would be able to go onto our display boards etc. We had a number of entries which took a while for our judging panel to decide on a winner – however, after much deliberation, congratulations to Quade Jones & Connor Hall, who receive a voucher to spend over the holidays. The winning logo (see above), incorporated our Gospel Values and school motto.Well done and thank you to all those who entered:Kobie Vassell, Rosie Bailey, Alex Sim, Liam Gould, Alex Matthew, Izzy Taylor, Lauren Smith, Connor Powell, Kyle Simmonds, Aiden Wakefield, Phoebe Edwards, Harrison James, Alicja Mroskowiak, Raycee Hussain, and Kieran Essex. Class Chart points have been added for you. Mrs O’Connor and Ms Mason

SCIENCE MATTERSYEAR 9 SCIENCE SESSION – TRANSITION DAY 2017For the Science session, students assigned themselves to groups

of three, where, with limited resources – 10 elastic bands, 10 lollypop sticks, an empty can, cotton wool, a spoon, a cup and a marshmallow – catapults were constructed. With given guidelines, students worked on the design and features of our catapults before being given the equipment, and allowed to begin.Time was given to construct and trial the catapults, before individual groups were called to test the power/distance that their catapults could fire the mini marshmallow. In paired groups, the students checked that their partner group was testing fairly; they then tested the accuracy by placing a cup of 50cm from the catapult, to land the marshmallow in the cup, assertively. For the next accuracy test, students placed the cotton wool on the cup, at which to fire the mini marshmallow.

Students found the task quite enjoyable because it was an opportunity to have fun with friends whilst being competitive and using physics to help fire accurately and powerfully. Helen Vardy, Naomi Payne and Ross Harrison, 9Y1

CAREERS FAIRAs covered in last week’s newsletter, Saint Augustine's hosted a Careers Fair for Years 10 and 12 students last Friday. Thirty providers, ranging from Higher and Further education, apprenticeships, the armed services and a number of employers, participated to give students an opportunity to find out more about post 16 and 18 career paths. Please read one student’s account of the event below.‘The Careers Fair was great and helped me with my future plans. I want to be a primary school teacher and both the University of Birmingham and Worcester gave me some great advice on what I need to do to achieve this.’ Emma Johnson Year 10

WORK EXPERIENCE MATTERSWORK EXPERIENCE - YEAR 10Over this week and next week 72 Year 10 students will be taking part in their work experience. Placements range from Jaguar Land Rover, Lancashire County Cricket Club, Rolls Royce, UTC aerospace Systems and a range of local schools and nurseries. We wish them all the best on their work placements.WORK EXPERIENCE YEAR 12A significant number of Year 12 students have undertaken work experience last week.

SPORT MATTERSSPORTS DAY - WEDNESDAY 19TH JULY 2017Attached to this Newsletter is the Sports Day Letter that went out to all students a few weeks ago, which provides all details about the day.ENGLISH SCHOOLS ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2017On Friday, 7th and Saturday, 8th July 2017, fifteen students were selected to act as volunteers at The English Schools Athletics Championships at The Alexander Stadium, Birmingham. Athletes from all round the country were competing in a range of track and field events to become English School Champions. The Saints volunteers acted as kit carriers for the athletes on Friday, being able to watch some outstanding perform-ances by some of the best athletes in the country. The students worked tirelessly throughout the day making sure the event ran smoothly and the athletes had what they needed. Students supported the event from 7.45am-7.00pm at night, so it was a long day. However, they acted with professionalism and were a real credit to the school. On Saturday morning the students met at Saints again at 7.45am to make their way to the stadium. Their role on Saturday was to marshall athletes from the call room to their selected event in the stadium. They were in charge of athletes registering and getting to their events on time. Again, without the volunteers the event could not run. Students took it in turns to have breaks throughout the day to watch some of the action, including the finals of the track events, followed by the 4x100m relays. Students finished and arrived back to school at 7.00pm - another long day! Students received a number of free merchandise sponsored by New Balance - including a t-shirt, cap, sun vizor and free lunch on both days. The students were fantastic throughout and hopefully feel inspired by the talent on display on both days. Well done to all students involved you should be very proud of yourselves. Students included: Louis Ravenhill, Lewis Clissett, Andrew Roadley, Emilia Wright, Ellen Bowen, Ellie Moss, Alice Battey, George Clements, Anna Nicod, Olivia Hall, Tara Gregory, Eugene Read, Jess Notley, Trenten Roberts and Charlie Trainor.

SIXTH FORM MATTERSYr12 Work Experience Week 3rd July-7th July Last week saw 42 Year12 students go out on work experience to a wide range of employers. Our original target was for 20 students to go out, as it was the first time we had organised a more formalised work experience. We were therefore thrilled that so many students were able to take up this valuable opportunity. The feedback we gained from placement visits and phone call enquiries to employers was extremely positive. We feel very proud of the way the students represented themselves and their school. Many employers stated that they would welcome students for work experience next year such was the positivity of this year’s cohort. All in all, a brilliant and successful week and an experience that will enable students to evidence employability skills when starting their UCAS applications and apprenticeship applications next term.Tom Saunders Work Experience at Saint Bede’sTom and Phoebe Bicknell attended Saint Bede’s School for their work experience and this is what Tom had to say:“Staff and students were really welcoming and happy to help with any queries we had. It was great to re-visit the work of a Middle School. One of the most memorable lessons was Geography with the Founda-tion group. We went exploring in the Dingle Forest School where all staff and students found their inner Tarzan! It was also great spending the afternoon with these students preparing for their picnic and it has helped to reinforce my future career prospects and ambitions.”Monday, 10th - Wednesday, 12th July - DofE Practice ExpeditionA superb three day practice expedition took place with much good humour and superb team work. Well done to all involved - you were all amazing.Friday, 14th July - Last day of term for Year 12Today, is the last day of term for Year 12 students with the exception of those who are resitting Year 12 mock examinations on Monday. Next week students will be working on their personal statements for their UCAS forms. We wish all Year 12 students a safe and happy summer holiday.Internal Examination - Year 12 resitsThe majority of Year 12 resit examinations will take place on Monday, 17th July 2017 in M2/M3. Results will be available during next week for these important resits. Good luck to you all. Ms Paddock, Mrs Passalaqua and Miss Klatt

WHAT AN EXPERIENCE!Saint Augustine's Year 9 student Tom Carter is having the time of his life this week in Bangkok, Thailand doing what he loves most - playing football! He has had a fantastic opportunity to play out in Bangkok with his West Brom team. The team won the tournament (Thursday) and now get to play the Thailand Allstars on Saturday at the National Stadium. Attached are some photographs of Tom and his team and we look forward to seeing more photos and hearing all about it when he returns this week-end. What an outstanding achievement, we are very proud of you Tom! MUSIC MATTERSMONACO MUSIC TOURThis year, the Music Tour included 6 choir and band concerts in three different countries; Monaco, France and Italy. This in itself was a most exciting prospect. It proved to be a hectic schedule, but the performances were all amazing. One of the highlights of the tour, was performing in a church within a small community. After performances from the choir and chamber choir, the local priest provided refreshments, which he had prepared and baked himself! This was a most welcome and generous gesture. Our last band concert, on Thursday in Villefranche-Sur-Mer, had the entire square on their feet. This served to enthuse the Jazz Band even further and was such a buzz. However, the tour did provide us with well deserved down times. We travelled to Aquasplash Waterpark in beautiful Antibes and on the same day we visited the Hard Rock Café in Nice. We also found time to hang out by the waterfront in Diano Marina as well as our hotel pool. Many thanks to Mr Long for arranging this amazing tour and also to all staff who accompanied us. Dear Parent/Carer Sports Day Arrangements 2017

On Wednesday, 19th July 2017 Saint Augustine’s Catholic High School will be hosting their annual Sports Day at The Abbey Stadium, Redditch. This is an interform event where all students have signed up to complete at least one event on

the day to gain vital points for their form.

Students should arrive at Saint Augustine’s, in full PE kit at normal school time and attend form registration (9:15-9:40am). They will then be taken to The Abbey Stadium via coach.

The key information for the event is:

Students should wear full Saint Augustine’s PE kit including appropriate sports trainers. Students are allowed to wear spikes for certain events and we would advise students to bring these with them to change into for their event on the day.

Students should also be prepared for changing weather conditions. This involves bringing waterproofs/sun cream/cap or even an umbrella to aid in either rain or sun protection.

Students must bring a water bottle, which can if needed be filled up at The Abbey Stadium. Students must ensure

that they stay hydrated throughout the day to avoid the ill effects of dehydration.

Students should also bring a packed lunch as we will not be returning to school until the end of the day. Please ensure that this is sufficient for student’s energy levels as they will be outside for most of the day. If your

son/daughter has Free School Meals, this will be available as a packed lunch to be collected in the canteen before form at 9:15am.

Please ensure that your child brings any necessary medical equipment with them, such as asthmatic inhalers, epi-pens etc. First Aiders will be on site at all times for support if needed.

Coaches will collect students from The Abbey Stadium. Students will not be allowed to be dismissed directly from The Abbey Stadium. Students will return to form groups to be registered. Students will then make their way back home as

normal at 15:50pm and the school buses will run as normal.

All students should be in attendance unless their absence has been authorised prior to the day with the attendance office. Unfortunately, due to the large numbers of students and staff at The Abbey stadium, we are unable to accommodate

parents/carers/spectators to watch during the day.

If you have any queries regarding the day please contact Mrs L. Humphries on [email protected]

Yours sincerely

Mrs L Humphries Subject Leader for PE and Sport

Water safety risks to be aware of over the summer holidays

- Water presents a drowning risk, often under currents and high depth behind structures such

as weirs catch people unaware causing them to drown. A recent fatality in Redditch was

caused by a teenager being in the deep water behind a weir. The majority of drowning

deaths in the UK come within 3ms from a safe point.

- The temperature shock is one of the biggest causes of death when playing in water. Water

removes heat from the body approximately four times faster when submerged compared

with air temperature. Two thirds of deaths related to drowning are from people known to

be ‘good swimmers’ this is because of the reduction in temperature causing decreased

strength and flexibility.

- Moving water is very powerful, especially flood waters – it only takes a couple of inches of

water flowing at 3mph to knock you off your feet.

- Damming up streams and causing blockages with material causes water to back up and cause

flooding which puts everyone at risk

- Many of the watercourses in Redditch are located in the upper reaches of their catchments

and respond very quickly to rainfall. As a result the rivers and streams go from low to high

flow conditions very quickly. When these open channels flow into pipes and culverts it can

be a great danger to anyone playing in them. People have died by playing in culverts and

water suddenly flowing down at a fast rate without them being to get out.

- If you are ever swept away by flowing water keep your feet off the ground as you can risk

getting your foot caught in or on something such as rocks, ropes, manholes, branches etc.
