KITTY SMITH, OUTSTANDING JUNIOR

SWIMMER.

Kitty Smith, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

R. J. Smith, of Brighton Avenue, Campsie, nnd

a pupil of St. Mel's Convent School, Campsie, is

one of the outstanding junior swimmers of the

State. A member of the Sydney Telephone La

dies' Amateur Swimming Club, Kitty started

competitive swiming at the age of eight years.She has won 10 trophy cups, including the

'Speedo.' This race is held under the auspicesof the N.S.W. Women's Amateur Swimming As

sociation, and consists of free style, breast strokeand backstroke. Kitty won the event in 1932,and was runner-up in 1934. She has won her

age championship of the Telephone Club each

Mrs. Sutherland, the hon. coach of the Tele

phone Club, is training Kitty with the OlympicGames in view, and she considers Kitty an out

standing junior. If she is selected to representAustralia, she will be the second Telephone Club

member that has represented their native land

at the Olympic Games.

In the recent Diocesan Examination, Kittysecured 6 A's, and is first year dux at St. Mel's.

Niblick Club Notes.

Last Sunday's stroke handicap was won by E.

W. O'Shea, 82 (20) 62, and this player's han

dicap has now been reduced from 20 to 16. V.Hill, 86 (18) 68, was next, and the very con

sistent M. Reid, 88 (16) 72, followed. The lat

ter's score was equalled by P. Murphy, 88 (16)72, and J. Wilson, 92 (20) 72.

Tuesday's stroke handicap was won by R. J.

Vaughan, 94 (22) 72, followed by M. Reid, 91

(16) 75. A strong southerly breeze materiallyaffected the scoring.
