Mass for the Feast of Corpus Christi

This past Sunday was the Feast of Corpus Christi. This is the Feast Day adopted by the founders of Catholic Regional College Sydenham as the College Feast Day. It is appropriate that we start the day with Mass, gathering as community. I invite all families to attend the Mass and to celebrate with us. Mass will commence at 9.20 This is a time where we give thanks for being a part of this community, being Catholic and a part of our Parishes and Church. For, as our Archbishop explains in his 2013 homily, we must allow ourselves to pay attention to God’s presence in our lives.

“I am the living Bread from heaven, says the Lord, whoever eats this Bread will live forever.”

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Because on Holy Thursday we were looking forward to the Passion of Our Lord, the Church has given us for many hundred years a special feast when we recognise the Body and Blood of Christ.

Christ is really present in the Eucharist, totally and in every part of the consecrated elements. The Eucharist is the high point of our contact with Christ. Many people will see the Church visible in charitable activity and missionary projects, but the place where the Church is actually the Church is here in the liturgy, because here it is that Jesus enters our lives and we touch him. In the liturgy we come into contact with God; he comes to us and we are illumined by him.

The liturgy gives us strength and guidance in two forms. On the one hand, we hear his Word, which means we really hear him speaking and receive his instruction. On the other hand, he gives himself to us in

the Eucharist. The liturgy given us by the Church invites us to give ourselves to him and let ourselves be touched by him. That is why we try and come to Mass with attentive listening, with prayer and with beauty, so that we can reach out from ourselves to the absolute wonder of God.

Corpus Christi is about the wonder that only God can give us. It is true and we believe that Christ is really present in the Eucharist. It is the Eucharist that is the centre of absolutely everything, not just of our day or our life, but of the history of the world, because the Lord’s Word and his Real Presence are things that are inseparable from the Eucharist and allowing ourselves to be touched by God’s Word and the Eucharist is an essential condition for any change in our world.

That is why the Eucharist is the source and summit of the entire Christian life. That is why when we receive the Lord in Holy Communion something special is happening. He is here, the one before whom we fall on our knees. We pay attention because it is not just a social ritual, it is God meeting mankind as the centre of our history, God ever present, walking with us to nourish us for eternal life, to guide us in prayer, to keep us meeting with him again and again, so we in fact will be his people.

MacKillop Cluster

The MacKillop Cluster would like to recognize Elizabeth Petruolo as our student of the fortnight.

Elizabeth has made a terrific start to her final year of secondary education. She has impressed teachers with her commitment to her studies and involvement in extra-curricular activities. Elizabeth has not only given herself over to her studies but she has also maintained her involvement in the community, the highlight of which was her evening work helping the homeless men of Melbourne whilst volunteering at Ozanam House.

Congratulations Elizabeth and keep up the good work!

Bradman Cluster

Matthew has worked extremely well this semester with a group of VCAL students and tradesmen completing the VCAL garden project. This group has been commended by the outside contractors and maintenance staff for their work ethic and Matthew has been a standout contributor.

Chang Cluster

The Chang Cluster would like to acknowledge Joseph Siveges from Chang 7. Joseph utilises his time helping people. Beginning with his family, and helping his Nan, Joseph then looks further afield to helping his peers. Joseph’s passion is psychology and people’s health. In previous years, he has been an integral part of the Peer Support program at his feeder school and is interested in initiating a Peer Support Program aimed specifically at Year 11s. Observing trends on social media, Joseph sees this a great need. We commend Joseph Siveges to you for displaying the cluster values of dignity and

compassion.

Dunlop Cluster

The Dunlop Cluster would like to recognise and congratulate Akon Mawien for being shortlisted for the Victorian Under 17 Cricket Team.

Akon is a very talented young cricketer whose commitments have included Captaining the CRC Sydenham SACCSS Cricket Team and attending weekly training sessions at the MCG. Last year Akon toured England with his Cricket Club and at the end of the term, will head off to Sri Lanka to play a number of matches. His future looks bright and we wish him well as he strives for a professional career in

the sport.

Winton Cluster

The Winton Cluster would like to highlight the great efforts of Claudia Bartolo in Winton 6. Recently on Cluster Feast Day, Claudia was approached to help contribute to the musical performances required in the Winton Mass. She was able to overcome any fears she had of singing in public to perform an amazing rendition of Hallelujah. Since then, Claudia has now begun to prepare for external performances in a range of different musical situations. We congratulate Claudia on overcoming her fear of performing vocally when she has such amazing talent and for continuing to share her art with those in our

community.

O’Shane would like to knowledge Alexander Dib from O’Shane 4 for a great start to the CRC Sydenham community. Alex has been a key member of the VCAL garden group this Semester. He has worked diligently and gained positive feedback from both the site tradesmen and contractors. He has also completed work placement at the College this year with our maintenance team, and has become a very popular member of the team. O’Shane feels very blessed to have a member in our cluster like Alex and we wish him all the very best for his time with us!

Reports and Parent-Teacher-Student Interviews

Parent-Student-Teacher interviews to discuss Semester One Reports will be held on Thursday 26 June: 4.00pm – 8.30pm and Friday 27 June: 9.00am – 1.00pm. The interviews will be conducted in the College Multipurpose Hall. Friday June 27 is a student free day to allow students to attend interviews.

These interviews aim to provide you with the opportunity to meet your son/daughter’s tutor and subject teachers in order to receive feedback on their current progress and to discuss goals for the remainder of the year. Reporting on student achievement is a two phased proc-ess. Whilst the report provides an overview of achievement, a detailed conversation with teachers will allow you to have a better understanding of how you can best support your child as they progress through their senior secondary education. We strongly encourage all students to attend the interview with their parent or guardian.

Catholic Regional College Sydenham has an electronic booking system for teacher appointments. The system can be accessed via a link to the Parent Access Module (PAM) on the College website (www.crcsydenham.net) and requires a username and password. Once you have accessed PAM you will be able to make the appropriate appointment times with your son/daughter’s teachers.

The online appointments system will be activated from 4.00pm on Thursday 19 June and will close at 12 noon on Thursday 26 June.

It is recommended that students whose parents require an interpreter for these interviews inform staff from Student Services of their needs and the relevant times.

COLLEGE FEAST DAY - Wednesday 25 June 2014

As Brendan Watson wrote about in the previous Newsletter, each year the College celebrated the Feast of Corpus Christi as our College Feast Day. This year we will do so on Wednesday 25 June.

Since 1982, the College has taken as its own festive day of prayer and celebration, the feast of Corpus Christi. Only when the whole College shares in one Eucharist is the true meaning of College and community illuminated.

The College Feast Day is the most significant day in our College calendar for 2014 and so I would like to bring the following important aspects of the day to your attention.

All students will need to be at the College in full school uniform no later than 8.45am

Scheduled classes for VCE, VET and VCAL have been cancelled for the occasion.

Students will not be attending any VET programs at other institutions.

Students will not be attending Work Placement in industry

We encourage students not to bring valuables on this day.

Year 11 Biology Excursion to Werribee Zoo

In May, the Year 11 Biology students went to Werribee Zoo. The students completed a program based on learn-ing about Herbivores and Carnivores. The program con-sisted of analysing skulls of various organisms and go-ing on a safari bus tour to learn about many different herbivores and their behaviours.

Special Neuroscience Program for 10 year 11 Science students:

On Thursday 29th of May, I had the privilege to attend a neuroscience excursion at the Gene Technology Access Centre (GTAC). During the excursion, I had the chance to learn and understand what was occurring in science labs. Scientists were not only working on a solution to help cure illnesses, but they had found a cure to extract Alz-heimer's disease in rats, however not yet in humans. What I enjoyed from this experience was learning how methanol broke down in our body and having an open mind set towards alcohol addiction. Thanh Lan Tran

On Monday 26th May, the Girls AFL team competed in the Girls AFL round robin competition. It was a fantastic day, with our girls competing well throughout the whole day. They made it through the semi finals, unfortunately going down in a tight match. The girls should be proud of their efforts, and thank you to Andrew Mollica and Monica Dennis for taking the girls on the day.

The class has been studying fitness programs and training, and the players gave an amazing insight to the group about their path-way through football to the elite level, and discussed their training and fitness regimes, their diet and lifestyle, and stories from their football careers.

The college would like to thank Dale and Jason for giving up their time for coming to speak to the group, as it was an experience that was very rewarding and informative for the students.

From CRC Fit From the Performing Arts Faculty

On May 22 and 23, the Year 12 Theatre Studies stu-dents presented The Venetian Twins to a warm and appreciative audience. The production was a huge success and the students all worked very hard in re-hearsals and in production team meetings to ensure that a professional quality performance was delivered. A huge thank you to all who were involved and who helped support the event. Here is an account of Mad-dison Attard, year 12 student and the actor who played both Tonio and Zanetto!

"Last year, I sat at the crate theatre with my mum and we watched 'The 39 Steps' that was performed by the Year 12 students in Theatre Studies last year. When I got home, I felt so excited as I realised I would be in the production next year and how it would be great. Although, I doubted how many people would come to see the show, how good it would be and the com-ments people made. However, I can safely say that these instincts were all proven wrong. As a Theatre Studies class, we proved that students can create a fantastic production with the help of our teacher, David O'Brien. I am so glad to be apart of the amazing ex-perience, it has taught me so much! All those blood, sweat and lots of tears to achieve something so great. I am so proud to say I was apart of this production. People have constantly asked me 'do you regret it? Being two characters? ' or 'do you wish you didn't do the production? ' And I just laugh because they will never understand this amazing experience. I would like to thank David for his help and for the support and hard work of my fellow students. The Venetian Twins would not have been a success without all your deter-mination to keep going and making it the best we could. I am so proud!" Maddison Attard.
