With warmer weather on the horizon, we would like to remind that students take home any additional winter wear and boots. A reminder that students are expected to come to school in observance of the local dress code of white or blue top and navy bottom. We kindly ask that students refrain from using the front entrance in the morning and make

Dear Our Lady of Wisdom Community Members,

As we begin the holy season of Eastertide, the fifty days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost, may the collective community at Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic School never lose sight of the meaning of this time in the Catholic Church’s calendar, as a time of new life, having been redeemed through the paschal mystery.  The Fathers of the Second Vatican Council remind us that in Jesus’ death, “He destroyed our death and rising He restored our life.” The busyness of life can sometimes re-direct our attention away from just how important Jesus’ restoration of our lives truly is along with the hope that we may one day join Him in his Kingdom. Truly, the waters of social justice continue to run deep at Our Lady of Wisdom, and this is evident in the abundance of activity that is happening thanks to students, parents and staff members. Students participating in the Me to We committee continue to add to the funds raised through the “Five Pillars, One Cause” campaign as they endeavor to address breaking the cycle of poverty through fundraising activities and the communication of facts related to the five pillars. In addition, I’d like to thank the members of the CSPC and Councilor Norm Kelly’s office for organizing an important day on April 30th at 11 a.m., which promotes the tenets of environmental stewardship through the promotion of using compost and recycling used electronics. With our PTLP program, now in full swing, our grade 7 students and parent volunteers have been actively bolstering the morale of our younger, struggling readers by strengthening their reading comprehension skills through this scaffolded in-house reading recovery program.  Thank you to the parent volunteers at our school for adding to an already robust ethos where we all aspire to live a life of faith. We look forward to our Family Math Night, which will be held on April 5 at 6 p.m. at Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic School, in conjunction with St. Isaac Jogues Catholic School. It will be an engaging night of math and wonderment, as students and their families participate in numerous hands-on math problems and activities suitable for all ages. PASSAGES SPEAKER

 Thank you to for a very awe inspiring and candid

story of courage, Mr. Patrick Bizindavyi. Our

Lady of Wisdom Catholic School welcomed

Patrick, as part of the Passages Canada

program, an immeasurable learning

experience for the children about what

diversity and opportunity means to a someone

who has struggled with political instability and

war in their homeland. As part of our ongoing, African Canadian Heritage celebrations, students from grades

1-8 learned about Patrick’s humble beginnings in small town Burundi, as a teacher, a sports radio host for Radio Bonesha, and a basketball coach who left

his homeland with little more than $60 to escape violence and instability to begin anew in Montreal and then Toronto. Patrick recounted his determination to survive and the idols from his youth, such as, Nelson

Mandel, a peacemaker and Michael Jordan, a determined athlete to explain his mantra of “Tout faire pour etre le meilleur.” Students were inspired to act in

the name of justice, as he spoke of his work with orphans in Mali and his donation of furniture to the

people of Burundi. Thank you for blessing the school.

DAGMAR SKI TRIP

As part of our Physical Education program, Our Lady

of Wisdom Catholic School students in the Junior and

Intermediate divisions enjoyed a day of skiing and

snowboarding at Dagmar Ski Resort on March 1, 2016.

Despite the frigid temperature that day, the trip provided our

students with an enjoyable and beneficial winter experience

through the sports of skiing and snowboarding, excellent ways to burn between 300 to 600

calories an hour and exercise various muscle groups. At

Dagmar, the students worked with licensed ski and

snowboard instructors to learn the basics of both sports and

hone their skillsets. Thank you to the teachers and parents

who made the day an enjoyable and safe one for the

students.

School has been awarded $1000 for 2015-2016 Speak Up Grant with the following purpose:

-To increase student engagement. Grade 7 and 8 students who are considering college or apprenticeship programs upon high

school graduation, will be investigating potential careers open to them. Intermediate aged students will not only examine career options, but will

review the necessary steps that are immediately ahead of them to obtain credits, transferable skills and 21st century skills that will be

required for general success in the fields of employment open to them. Findings will be recorded and presented in video format. The target

audience of the newly created video will be all grade 4 to grade 8 students - academic, applied and workplace bound students.

Students will be able to execute the necessary steps to

create a 15 - 30 minute video (or combination of short videos) that will be able to provide real life examples of jobs when they complete their

schooling in six to eight years. Student will make clear the requirements and skills for employment. They will create a product that invigorates the interest of their peers.

Students that are not always actively involved in school clubs or teams, will work on a project that will interest them.

SCIENCE FAIR Once again, Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic School became a

bustling hub of scientific exploration and inquiry, as students from Grades 7 and 8 hosted Ms. Price, teacher colleagues and Grade 11 and 12 Physics students from

Senator O’Connor Catholic Secondary to take part in our annual science fair. Ms. Price and her delegation of trained

student judges visited each project with the goal of evaluating the projects based on knowledge gained, information, scientific approach, collection of data,

conclusions, written work, oral presentations, exhibits, effort and finally creativity and originality, of which there was an

abundance. Students enthusiastically explained the premise behind their inquiry questions ranging from DNA extraction from common fruit, Code and its place in robotics, vision

from animals’ perspectives, the effects of microwaves to the design of solar powered inventions which store potential energy to power common household items. Classes from each of the junior and primary divisions had time in the

afternoon to sample each project’s offerings and interact with the budding young scientists. Congratulations to the students for this year’s excitement and their teacher, M.

Bruno for inspiring the students to new heights!

AUTISM AWARENESS

All of our students from Our Lady Of Wisdom Catholic School have been busy preparing a multitude of significant activities to learn more about Autism

Spectrum Disorders and to raise greater awareness among staff and students. All students at Our Lady of

Wisdom Catholic School will be joining school communities in the TCDSB system to perform a board

wide dance in honour of Autism Awareness Day on April 11th, 2016. This year our goal is to reach even more

school and students. This event exemplifies Pope Francis’ message about Autism Spectrum Disorders:

“Everyone should be committed to promoting acceptance, encounter and solidarity through concrete

support and by encouraging renewed hope.”

In addition, students will be involved in the creation of an individual Autism Awareness Ribbon based on a

large LEGO replica display in our school’s glass case, as well as, taking part in a collaborative creation of an Autism Mosaic and daily communication of important facts regarding Autism, culminating in a school wide

presentation.

HARBOURFRONT: On Friday, March 4, 2016 the grade 1/2 students from Mlle Katherine’s and the grade 2 students from Mme Thököly’s and Mme Rego’s classes attended two wonderfully orchestrated workshops in French at the Harbourfront Centre. For the first part of the day, students had a chance to create their own imaginative creature by using different types of animals and combining different body parts. These creatures were constructed by thick white paper, different coloured pastels and paint.  For the second part of the day, students were taught to make a blank book using paper techniques, such as curling, feathering, scoring, and creating an accordion and spring like effects. They also enjoyed using various textures like feathers, wallpaper, sparkles and buttons to make a front and back cover for their books. On behalf of Mlle Katherine, Mme Thököly and Mme Rego, they would like to extend their gratitude to all of the parents that helped supervise. It was truly a memorable event! 

Stations of the Cross Service at Our Lady of Wisdom on Thursday, March 24th, 2016:

Deep into the last week of Lent, known as the Paschal or Easter Triduum, made up of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday, just before Easter Sunday, staff and students demonstrated our strength as a community of believers in common prayer, gathering to reaffirm just what this time of year means to Catholics around the world. Beyond, the Easter scavenger hunts, the chocolate, the Easter bunny, and celebratory meals with family, students and staff remembered our higher purpose during this most important of times in the liturgical season. Students in Grade 6 and Grades 7 and 8 led us all on a brilliantly lit virtual walk with Jesus, as he made his way to Calvary, reminding us of His sacrifice, His death on the cross because He loves us so, asking God the Father to forgive humanity’s sins and grant eternal life with Him in heaven. Students engaged in saying the Our Father, the Hail Mary and Glory Be as students chronicled the details of each station from Station 1 Jesus is Condemned to Die to Station 14, Jesus is laid in the Tomb. As Pope Francis once stated, “Let this experience imprinted in the Gospel, be imprinted in our hearts and in our lives. Let the joyous wonder of Easter Sunday radiate through our thoughts , looks, attitudes , gestures and words ..."

Excerpt: “Respect and treat others fairly, regardless of, for example, race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability.” School is meant to be a safe place where students and the community have unique identities. Differences should be celebrated. If we were all the same, how boring would that be?! Think about the things that make you special. Think about what makes your friends special. Tell them!  Discussion Question: You heard someone say something rude to your friend, based on the fact that they are a boy or a girl. What would you do?

CURRICULUM CORNER: In the Grade 7 class of Mlle. Caroline, the classroom became a virtual poetry café on Wednesday, March 9, 2016. Students engaged in the spoken word, reciting original poems from a variety of forms from lyric, epic, to mock epic using a real time recording/streaming application called Screencastify. This created for a very rich atmosphere of sharing and a systematic way for the work to be logged into respective student Google Drive accounts, allowing for the teacher to provide timely descriptive feedback and emphasize quality exemplars for others to view and hear. Students in the Grade 3 class of Mme. Mari Berje demonstrated their abilities to “think outside the box,” taking on the learning experience of planning and building original 3-dimensional structures using conventional 3-D solids of various shapes and sizes. Our students produced a variety of interesting creations ranging from a small scale replica of an Aboriginal village/village autochtone to life like robots, miniature kitchen appliances and domestic pets with the expectation to describe their structures by communicating their make-up of 3-D shapes and their attributes, as well as, explaining and justifying why they chose the shapes that they did and what they learned through the process of their structures’ creation.

THE IDENTITY MASK

The context behind the learning task and its purpose was explained by Mr. Kwon: To create a plaster mask which will be painted with images/words/aspects of their personal, social, ethnic and spiritual identity,

with examples from their lives, formative events (local and global) and challenges, their belief systems, their

families, their social roles and relationships with people in their lives, their experience of gender,

culture and ethnicity, language, experiences with their parents’ country of origin, and their interaction with

the Catholic Church and their faith. The idea of telling their stories orally as a digitally recordable story is

also being considered as a next step

-Some common themes and statements made by students in the post survey about the identity mask learning task included the following information:

  -the learning experience had the power of bringing

the class together in many different ways -that is a true celebration of diversity as positive and

NOT divisive -students acquired a greater awareness of their

culture and their identity, a realization of who they really are

-there was a re-affirmation of who they really are, receiving comments and feedback from peers

-students felt the experience led to confidence building and dispelled peers’ or perceived misconceptions of

appearance equating their identity -dispel misinformation about what countries students

originate from, what their experiences should be and what they are perceived to be like

STEM WORKSHOPS : Our gymnasium became a virtual launch pad for our grade 3 parachutists taking part in Logics Academy’s Parachute STEM workshop on Friday, March 4, 2016. Students learned about the properties of upward force and the effects of drag while involved in the design and construction of 4 different groups of parachutes, experimenting with the size of the parachute, the placement of holes, and experimentation with various heights and subsequent touch down times using manual grabbers.

On Monday, March 21st, Mlle. Christine's Grade 5 class had the opportunity to take part in an Aboriginal presentation presented by an Aboriginal Elder and mentor of OISE/TCDSB.  During the course of the presentation, the team had the students experience "smudging" which is a ceremony/ritual meant to cleanse and clear negative energy. They also spoke to the children about what it means to Aboriginal as well as past and present Aboriginal issues in North American society.

Change the World: Ontario Youth Volunteer Challenge ChangeTheWorld: Ontario Youth Volunteer Challenge is a six week challenge to encourage Ontario high school students to volunteer locally and reward them for doing so. Last year in Toronto, over 3,500 students took part and across the province over 40,000 youth participated. Those who volunteer during the six weeks can contact the Ministry to request a certificate from Volunteer Toronto and the Ministry of Citizenship, Immigration and International Trade.
