FEBRUARY 10, 2019: FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Do You Have Enough?

Oxfam determined last year that the twenty six richest people in the world had more wealth than that of the combined poorest 3.8 billion people we share the planet with! True, we live in a nation of material abundance. Most have all the things we could possibly need not only to survive, but also to thrive - food, shelter, income, access to medical care and quality educational opportunities. However, most people in human history lived with far less than we have, and currently there are still many around the world who go without. So why are we so dissatisfied? Some Christians can be drawn to the “prosperity Gospel.” This is the idea that following God will bring us material abundance in this life.

That surely seems to be the story of today’s Gospel! Peter and his friends chose - with some faith - to put out their nets a final time at Jesus’ command. And wow, what a catch – so much

that the nets were tearing! What a gift! What abundance! What prosperity! Peter and his friends caught more fish than they’d ever seen. Yet what is their response to this material abundance, this gift from God? They leave it all behind. “When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him.”

Praying for God to meet our physical, material needs is not a bad thing! Jesus himself includes “give us this day our daily bread” in the prayer He teaches his disciples. The question is, how do we respond when our prayers are answered? Do we thank God briefly, or perhaps ignore Him completely and move on with our lives? Or do we respond as Peter did? “God? You showed up in an area that has no bearing on my eternal salvation. You gave me a gift I didn't even really need. You love me! You really do love me.” Is our gratitude only surface level? Or do we allow ourselves, like Peter did, to respond with wonder, awe, and deeper discipleship? Do we keep our eye on the prize – Jesus Christ?

Catholicism: The Pivotal Players

Bishop Robert Barron

Saint Augustine the Teacher Possibly the best example of how faith in Christ changed a person. Augustine’s narrative of personal transformation in his book Confessions provides a template for life in Christ that still rings true today.

Saint Benedict, the Monk Many would argue that Saint Benedict, the Monk contributed more to saving western Christian culture than anyone else. Born just after Rome fell, Benedict founded the religious community that would, in time, preserve the best of the old and allow for the emergence of an authentic, Christian way of life.

Join Bishop Barron as he traces the lives and contributions of these two pivotal saints.

Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Jesus invites the disciples who have

been fishing all night to “put out into the deep. . .” Despite their fatigue, they do as Jesus asks because they have faith

in him. He not only rewards them with a large catch of fish, but he instructs

them to be fishers of men (and women). Today Jesus

invites us to take a leap of faith, to take to heart his words that we are to reach out to others and draw them to Christ. To whom will you reach out to in faith?
