Intro

Denmark holds a leading position within animal husbandry in Europe and is known for its high efficiency and high performance. Danish farmers are at the forefront of production in Europe; we have achieved a great “know-how” on efficient farming in the daily co-operation between the individual farmer and his suppliers of feed, vitamins and minerals and his agricultural advisor.

Vitfoss is a leading supplier of vitamins and minerals to cattle farmers in Northern Europe; with this position in mind we want to pass on our “know-how” within livestock production to our customers. In a close co-operation with our international partners, we are able to adapt our products to the milk production of the individual dairy farmer; in co-operation with the end user we can contribute to improved animal health and increased herd performance through optimised feed formulation and provision of vitamins and minerals.

The top priority is safety and food quality, because as suppliers to the food chain, we are aware of our responsibility.

Our products are a link in the food chain and thus impact significantly on the farmer’s end products. Apart from being certified as feedstuff company by the Danish Plant Directorate under the Danish Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries (registration No. alpha-208-G751872), Vitfoss is also certified according to FAMI-QS. FAMI-QS requires a detailed description of all relevant procedures based on the principles of hazard analysis and critical control points (HACCP). The description also includes raw materials and production processes. FAMI-QS aims at providing maximum security in order to safeguard that Vitfoss meets the requirements laid down in the EU regulation on feed hygiene and at continuously delivering good and sound products not containing unwanted substances.

Minerals for cattle

The daily intake of minerals is vital to cattle, not only from a survival point of view, but also with a view to the per formance of the dairy cow in order to ensure that she does not milk from her body. Insufficient intake of minerals may also lead to bone problems and subsequent leg problems.

Using first-class raw materials, Vitfoss ensures that the mineral compounds provide an optimum supply of minerals. The amount of mineral supplement should be adapted to the type of roughage given to the cattle. It is important to choose the correct mineral compound,

depending on whether phosphorus, magnesium, calcium or sodium is needed in the first place.

The Vitfoss mineral compounds have great palatability due to their contents of molasses. The magnesium source is magnesium phosphate, which is tastier than magnesium oxide. It ensures that the cattle eat the minerals without refusal.

The recommended mineral supply is between 100 and 150 g per cow per day. Young stock only need between 50 and 150 g per day.

VM minerals for cattle Dust-free compounds

VM 1 is used in situations where calcium-low roughage such as maize silage, whole-crop and sugar beet products are used. VM 1 contains sulphur. VM 1 has a high content of vitamin A and E to compensate for the low vitamin content in situations where the feed consists of a reduced amount of green feedstuffs and a large amount of maize.

VM 2 is used in the same way as VM 1. A daily allowance of 110 g includes 5 g phosphorus. VM 2 is used for heifers needing phosphorus.

VM 3 is used when the roughage is richer in calcium, e.g. when a large amount of grass and/or grass silage is used. VM 3 gives an adequate supply of magnesium.

VM U is ideally suited for use at turnout. VM U does not contain vitamins. VM G has a low content of calcium and contains a very low level of sodium. VM G is used during the entire dry period.

VM nurse summer is allocated to nursing cows on pasture to prevent poor performance and poor health due to insufficient intake of minerals. The mineral feed is rich in selenium and has a high content of easily digestible magnesium. Nursing cows adjust the intake according to their needs, usually between 100 and 200 g per cow per day.

Minerals for cattle

VM nurse winter is a palatable mineral and vitamin compound with a high content of selenium and magnesium; it covers the needs of the nursing cow during winter-feeding and is used as a preventive measure and to enhance productivity.

VM heifer summer is a granulated mineral feed with great palatability for heifers on pasture. An adequate supply of macro and micro minerals ensures healthy and strong production animals meeting the farmer’s demands for high performance and good health. Do not allocate more than what the heifers can eat in 3-5 days.

VM heifer winter is suitable in all feed rations for heifers staying in the housing. This product provides an adequate supply of vitamins and macro and micro-minerals. These are necessary for the development of a good bone structure and ensure that high milk yields are achieved. Recommended dosage: 20 g per 100 kg body weight, however minimum 40 g per heifer. We recommend checking the feed plan in order to ensure the exact requirement.

VM Turbo is a highly specialized product providing the best value of all mineral supplements in our range of products. It has a higher content of vitamins and micro minerals than our other VM products.

Kravimin milk & beef is a compound feed for better rumen function and higher yield in case of acidosis or heat stress. Essential oils in Kravimin milk & beef influence the function of rumen microflora and lower the fermentation of protein and starch in the rumen. In this way, essential oils stabilise the pH and lower the ammonium concentrations in the rumen. Stable pH in the rumen is also provided by the yeasts Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which promote the beneficial rumen microflora. Stable conditions in the rumen increase health and production. Kravimin milk & beef should be given to cows when outside temperatures rise above 18°C and to animals that have different health issues and show poor consumption. Recommended daily dosage is 50 g for dairy cows and heifers. 1 kg of Kravimin milk & beef contains 100,000 mg essential oils and 20x1010 CFU yeasts.

Improved immune status - Vitamin EVitamin E functions as an antioxidant and is very important for health. The figure shows how critical the level is around calving. For many years, synthetic vitamin E has been used entirely, but new Danish research shows that natural vitamin E has 5-6 times better utilisation. Consequently, we only use natural vitamin E in all our Cattlemix and Yeamix mixtures. ProtiSpar ProtiSpar is a patented combination of essential oils for optimising the protein supply. ProtiSpar increases the bypass protein so that the amount of the feed protein can be reduced. ProtiSpar decreases ammonia production in the rumen and thereby improving health and fertility of the animals.

Organic micro minerals for cowsOrganic micro minerals are metal ions (copper, zinc, manganese) bound to an amino acid. Supplement of organic micro minerals leads to increased milk yield, improved udder health, enhanced fertility, good hooves and reduced number of hoof injuries.

Organic micro minerals are protected against degradation in the rumen. This ensures increased and reliable intake and utilisation of the minerals, leading to an overall improvement of the immune system of the cow.

Better feed efficacy - YeamixYeamix is composed as Cattlemix but in addition, the yeast culture Yea-Sacc 1026 is added. High yield demands digestible feed – often harming the rumen environment. Yea-Sacc1026 stimulates the cellulolytic bacteria and thus it has a stabilising effect on the rumen environment and subsequently on the roughage utilisation.

Stronger hoofs - BiotinBiotin is a vitamin B, which has a positive and documented effect on hoof health. Biotin is important for the formation of horn and the very structure of the hoof horn. Biotin functions as joints in masonry – undamaged or in a poor condition. We recommend preventive use of biotin in all high-yielding herds. A stronger hoof will reduce loss due to hoof problems.

Success E-50000 d-alpha & Success E-100000 d-alphaFormer Yellow Success Special & E-100 with selenium

Success E 50000/100000 d-alpha are vitamin E supplements with natural vitamin E. Supplement of vitamin E enhances the immune system, which means reduced disease frequency. Often vitamin E can counter sudden deaths and weak or stillborn progeny.

Natural vitamin E is more digestible than synthetic vitamin E especial among ruminants.

Available in 1, 5 and 20 litres

Success E-50000/K/SeleniumFormer Yellow Success

Success E 50000/K/Selenium is a vitamin E supplement with vitamin K and selenium. Extra supplement of vitamin E enhances the immune system in general, which means reduced disease frequency. Often vitamin E can counter sudden deaths and weak or stillborn progeny. Selenium supplements and supports the function of vitamin E.

Vitamin E also works as antioxidant and therefore it can be used profitably at feeding with freshly harvested grain.

Vitamin K is added since practical experiences have shown that the need for vitamin K is increased by application of extra vitamin E. Vitamin K affects the bloods ability to coagulate, which can be very important by diseases causing internal haemorrhage.

Available in 1, 5 and 20 litres

Success B-ComplexFormer Green Success

Success B-Complex has a high content of all the important B vitamins. Success B-Complex can be used for all domestic animals. The extra supplement of vitamin B often has a positive effect on symptoms such as reduced growth, poor appetite, bad general condition and problems with skin and coat. Use Success B-Complex for 1-2 weeks and in most cases the animals will recover after this period - especially when the issue is intestinal disturbances. Success B-Complex has to be applicated daily, because the animals are not able to deposit water-soluble vitamins.

Available in 1, 5 and 20 litres

Success Multi/SeleniumFormer Blue Success

Success Multi/Selenium is a broad-spectrum product with vitamins A, D, E, K, C and the most important B vitamins and selenium. The product can be used as an overall vitamin supplement, because of the content of all essential vitamins. In situations where the animals are stressed e.g. during transfer an extra supplement can be profitable.

The product can be used for ruminants if you want to apply B vitamins together with the normally used fat-soluble vitamins for cattle A, D and E.

Available in 1, 5 and 20 litres

Success ADE-60000/Selenium Former Red Success

Success ADE 60000/Selenium is optimised according to the need of the cattle for the fat-soluble vitamins A, D and E. The fat-soluble vitamins are deposited in the body and thus they do not need to be applicated daily.

Available in 1, 5 and 20 litres

Lick bowls and buckets

FieldFeeder The correct allocation of macro- and micro minerals is essential for the development of healthy and strong heifers whether they are spending the whole summer on pastureland or not.

The FieldFeeder is made of weather-resistant materials, has a high hygienic standard and is easy to clean. It is designed to allow no loss of minerals. The minerals are satisfactorily protected from rain, faeces and urine.

The FieldFeeder can hold up to approx. 12 kg mineral feed. Experience shows that if the mineral feed has a well-balanced taste, the heifers will only eat the amount actually needed. The daily intake varies over the summer – depending on each heifer’s need for minerals. We recommend filling the FieldFeeder with an amount corresponding to approx. 3-5 days’ consumption.

The FieldFeeder is placed either near a water supply or in a place frequently visited by the heifers.

BasicFeeder In the BasicFeeder a rubber top protects the minerals against rainwater and manure et cetera. The animals have to push the rubber top up with their heads. Under the rubber top, the BasicFeeder is divided into 3 compartments each holding 17 litres, equalling 3 x 40 kg ad-lib minerals. This partition provides the option for offering different mineral types at the same time. The three compartments are also perfect for holding mineral blocks up to 30 cm in diameter. In this way, the molassed minerals keep an appetising moist surface. The BasicFeeder is made of strong plastic and rubber, weigh around 18 kg, and has a width of 80 cm and a height of 34 cm. Because of the rounded edges and the height, the animals will neither tip nor mount the feeder.

For further details on the FieldFeeder or BasicFeeder, please see www.microfeeder.com

MicroFeeder for cattle

Lick bowls and bucketsLick bowls and buckets should be placed in areas, frequently visited by the animals and near places, where they drink water. It is important to protect the bowl from being damaged, e.g. by placing it in a scrapped car tyre. All lick bowls and buckets contain both macro- and micro minerals. All lick bowls and buckets also contain selenium, which some soils are deficient in. Salto LicksSalto Licks are produced by a special high-pressure method, which makes it easier to handle as well as resistant to rain. The products consist of natural salt with added micro minerals and vitamins. An extra application of salt and micro minerals counteracts metabolism problems, which can lead to impaired growth, reduced milk production, infertility and decreased performance. Salto Licks also contain selenium, which some soils are deficient in.

Mineral licks Salts and minerals are essential for the basic functioning of the body. Lack of salt causes unease and the animal tends to lick objects in the environment. An extra supplement of salt and minerals prevents metabolic disorders leading to reduced milk production, fertility and performance. To avoid such possible consequences the animal should always have free access to mineral licks.

Mineral licks from Vitfoss are manufactured by up-to-date production methods. They arecompressed at a very high pressure for optimum resistance to humidity and they do not crumble away.

Suplex Yea-Sacc Top Mineral feed for cattle

Suplex Yea-Sacc Top has a high concentration of live yeast cells; therefore, the daily allocation should be limited to 10-50 g per animal. Yeast cells cannot settle in the rumen.

Suplex Yea-Sacc Top is a supplement feed containing Yea-Sacc1026 TS, which is cultivated on corn, malt and molasses from cane sugar production. The gentle drying process results in a product with a high content of yeast cells.

Suplex Yea-Sacc Top stimulates:

● the growth of fibre-digesting bacteria, which results in increased dry-matter intake and improved milk yield,● the growth of bacteria utilising lactic acid – this leads to a stabilisation of the pH in the rumen and hence reduced metabolic acidosis,● the concentration of anaerobic bacteria, thus increasing the microbial protein synthesis and nutrition intake.

Suplex Yea-Sacc Top has a guaranteed content of 4x107 CFU Saccharomyces cerevisiae CBS 493.94.

Suplex E/Selenium Mineral feed with vitamin E and selenium for cattle (powder)

Suplex E/Selenium is the ideal supplement, providing extra selenium by legal means. An extra supplement of selenium and vitamin E will often prevent sudden death and weak or stillborn progeny.

Suplex E/Selenium is especially intended for mixing into complete feed or as top-dressing.

Suplex E-30000 is a concentrated vitamin product rich in vitamin E.

An extra supplement of vitamin E affects the immune system positively and reduces the frequency of diseases. It may often also prevent sudden death and weak or stillborn progeny.

Suplex E-30000Vitamin E with selenium

Suplex d-alpha E-50000/SeleniumSupplement feed with natural vitamin E(powder)

Suplex d-alpha E-50000/Selenium contains d-alpha-tocopherol as acetate compound, the biologically most active and naturally available tocopherol compound.

A great number of tests have proved that the concentration of vitamin E is often critically low in blood and tissue compared to the level that is required to maintain the positive effect of vitamin E on the immune system.

In addition, a Swedish-Danish study on cows at the time of calving indicates that there are significant differences between the cow’s absorption of synthetically produced vitamin E and natural vitamin E compared to that of monogastric animals, and that the vitamin value of synthetically produced vitamin E is consequently lower than originally anticipated.

Suplex d-alpha E-50000/Selenium contains 50,000 mg natural vitamin E.

11

Suplex Cattle Mineral feed with vitamin A, D3 and E for cattle

Suplex Cattle is the ideal combination of vitamins for ruminants, containing fat-soluble depot vitamins only. It has a relatively high content of vitamin A and D3 and a high content of vitamin E. Generally, ruminants only require an extra supplement of these vitamins.

The vitamin content is adapted to the VM range of mineral products. The natural vitamin content of roughage together with a supplement of VM minerals + Suplex Cattle will provide the optimum supply of the vitamins required.

To be given in empty crib or as top-dressing on feed.

Importance of a good start of lactationOne of the most important factors for providing a good start of lactation is the calcium level around calving. The calcium level has shown to be one of the most important predictor of other diseases. Calcium level is important for the muscle function and the immune system. Thus, all levels differing from the optimum will impair the productivity and health status of the animal. Supplementing X-Zelit in the dry period stimulates the cow’s own hormone system making her able to maintain the calcium level around calving.

Abnormal low calcium level in the blood around calving is one of the major precursor for a range of production and health problems in dairy cows. All cows will experience a lower calcium level around calving and just a small deviation from the normal level can have a large impact on the cow production performance. Resent research has confirmed that decreased blood calcium level, even within the normal range (>2.2 moll/L), is associated with increased risk of displaced abomasum, lower milk yield in the first part of lactation and a reduced reproductive performance due to an increased number of empty days.

X-Zelit is a product for improving the transition feeding and it has become very popular. The product is based on the idea of low calcium supply to dry cows. With less calcium available from the feed, the cow will adjust her hormones to the low-calcium environment condition and begin mobilising calcium from her own bones.

In other words the cow’s natural defence mechanism for preventing hypocalcaemia is activated, making her able to use calcium from bones and in that way maintain the calcium around calving at a natural level. However, due to the natural content of calcium in common feed ingredients, this is almost impossible to practise under normal feeding conditions. This invention, making it possible to reduce the uptake of ration calcium by adding a calcium binder to the feed, has revived the low feed calcium principle.

The principle is simple; the calcium binder effectively binds feed calcium in the intestine making the calcium less available for absorption. At the time when the supply of the calcium binder is ceased at calving, the hormonal system is then primed and capable of absorbing sufficient calcium into the blood and thereby to the udder.

1. Clinical hypocalcaemia or clinical milk fever Cows need treatment to get back on their feet, the gastrointestinal function basically stops. Around 4-8% of dairy cows suffer from this disease.

2. Subclinical hypocalcaemia or “invisible” milk fever The calcium level is below the normal level but the cow will still be standing. More than 50 % of all dairy cows are expected to suffer from low level of calcium around calving. As this group of animals seldom is treated, it might have greater impact on the economy than the clinical cases of hypocalcaemia.

Calcium plays a major role in muscle function and in cows’ immune system. Preventing the decrease in blood calcium level will consequently decrease the frequency of diseases and increase production efficiency.

Efficiency of X-Zelit Using the calcium binder product in the two last weeks before calving may prevent all hypocalcaemia under well-controlled experimental conditions. In the hands of the farmer on 22 farms, which were confirmed by veterinarians to have high incidences of clinical milk fever, it resulted in an 86% decrease in milk fever frequency.

In herds having a low number of clinical milk fever X-Zelit has given the following results:● Increased milk yield (P<0.05) + 1 kg EMC● Reduced SCC (P<0.1) - 10%● Decreased incidence of metritis (P<0.05) - 40%● Lower the risk of culling for multiparous cows(P<0.05)

Lactoval Liquid

Lactoval Liquid is a supplement feed for dairy cows that have calved very recently and/or are convalescing. Lactoval Liquid is an energy drink providing the cow with nutrients, additives and minerals.

Delivery of a calf is an entirely natural process. However, it puts a huge physical strain on the cow, and both hormone production and metabolism are undergoing drastic changes.

Stress at calving and the post-calving period, the changed feed intake and the rapidly increasing milk production necessitate a speedy convalescence.

Calving cows need plenty of liquid right after the delivery of a calf. Lactoval Liquid ensures, i.a. reduced loss of fluid and electrolytes, increased content of glucose in the blood and thus improved energy intake and a prevention of ketosis.

Ketosis is a metabolic disorder that especially affects high yielding cows in the first month of lactation.

The high yielding cow drains the fat reserves of the body. To avoid formation of the so-called ketones and thus the risk of ketosis the conversion of fat demands easily absorbable energy.

CORRECT - ENERGY contains the right energy elements for conversion of fat and thus prevents problems with ketosis. CORRECT – ENERGY is poured directly into the cow’s mouth by means of a CORRECT dosage pistol.

CORRECT - ENERGYEnergy product in paste form for prevention of ketosis in cows

Intestinal problems usually occur in situations where the immune system of the animal is poor. They often occur at a stage in the animal’s life where they are life-threatening. The consequences are a decline in production and subsequent production losses.

An electrolyte supplement restores the fluid balance in animals with intestinal problems and ensures fast recovery.

Due to its preventive effect on intestinal problems it is also recommendable to use electrolyte supplements prior to moving calves or at other times where stress levels may be increased thus predisposing the animal to diseases.

Significant features of the Vitfoss milk replacers are that they are homogeneous and easily dissolved. Such excellent properties are achieved by using a modern spray technique (filtermat) where milk and fat are mixed prior to spray drying.

Friska Soed is also based on skimmed milk and whey products and similar to Friska Soed Ekstra. It also contains 60% inclusion of skimmed milk powder but provides a slightly lower protein and fat content and contains only synthetic vitamin E. Friska Soed is also suitable for feeding in case of absence of colostrum as it contains highly digestible dairy proteins provided by the high skimmed milk powder inclusion.

Friska Valle is based solely on whey powder without added soy-protein concentrate. Friska Valle is suitable for feeding from the end of the colostrum period and provides a cost effective alternative to milk replacers containing skimmed milk powder.

Vitello Luxus is based on skimmed milk and whey products. Vitello Luxus is suitable for feeding from the end of the colostrum period. Vitello Toro is based solely on whey products. Vitello Toro can be used under the same circumstances as purely milk-based replacers.

Dietary fibres are essential ingredients in nutritionFor many years, nutritionists have recom mended a certain amount of dietary fibres in the daily food. Dietary fibres have a stabilising effect on digestion and prevent life-style related diseases such as fatness, arteriosclerosis, etc.

Research carried out on the fragile group of animals, e.g. calves during the milk feeding period, also showed that a fibrous product could prevent diarrh oea and improve the general intestinal health.

Development of FibermaxVitfoss has developed Fibermax, the ideal combination of fibres for calves in the milk feeding period.

Fibermax has been tested with several farmers raising calves, and the results show improved health, increased interest in eating resulting in improved concentrate intakes and live weight gains.

Fibermax is a good supplement for safe and reliable weaning.

Essential fatty acidsFibermax is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; these acids are essential to animals and should be added to the calf feed. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are known to have several positive influences such as improved immune system due to the anti-inflammatory impact of fatty acids and positive impact on the development of the digestive tract, which is vital especially in the beginning of the calf’s life.

AcidificationCitric acid has been added to Fibermax at the rate of 1 gram. Acidification has a certain anti-bacterial effect in the intestines. At application of the recommended amount of 20 g Fibermax per litre milk 1 g of citric acid per litre milk is applicated.

Stalosan Hygiene Solution A strategy of prevention

Protection of the primary production against outb-reak of diseases etc. is one of the most important factors in the efforts to achieve a func-tional and profit generating production. Minimising tools such as medication, additives etc. help to reduce costs and maximise profits.

We have therefore created a unique setup based on many years of cooperation with the professional animal production. We offer an outstanding newly developed audit program, which helps to illuminate the various risks in production. We are able to clarify the risks and subsequently describe how these risks can be minimised - that is economy!

One of the elements in minimising diseases is to ensure a high cleaning and disinfection level. Sta-losan can contribute to this. Stalosan is an appro-ved product that has been on the market and has been sold to animal productions in many countries for almost 50 years. Stalosan is known for its broad-spectrum field of efficiency against viruses, bacte-ria, fungi, parasitic eggs and flies. All characteristics are documented. The documentation is compiled from a variety of sources including independent laboratories, institutes and universities as well as via practical tests in the primary agricultural sector. We have thus secured a broad, comprehensive and independent documentation.

Efficient control of disease transmissionStalosan F is a powdery product, which can be used in animal housings. The product is harmless to animals and to humans. Stalosan is registered in many countries as a disinfectant. In the USA Stalo-san has been approved as a disinfectant by the EPA. In Europe, we have launched a joint EU registration in group 3 within the disinfectants group.

Based on many years of accumulated knowledge in the use of Stalosan F in stable environment, we have now expanded the range of disinfection products to include liquid detergents and disinfectants for use in stables as well as in mil-king equipment and water systems.

The pH value is a key factor in resistance to infections

Most pathogenic bacteria perish, at a pH value below 4. This circumstance is utilised by a secre-tion process occurring on the skin and in the res-piratory passages. This secretion has a pH value of approximately 4.5, which inhibits or eliminates pathogens, decreasing the risk of infections.Manure has approximately a pH value of 8-9 due to the concentration of ammonia, which dissolves the protective secretion of the skin and the surface of the respiratory passages, thus the risk of infections is increased.Stalosan F neutralises ammonia and creates an environment with a low pH value, which supports the animals own natural resistance to infection.
