CAUSES OF COGNITIVE COMMUNICATION DISORDER 1.Birth Defects Birth defects are structural or functional abnormalities present at birth that cause physical or mental disability. One of the cause of birth defects is genetic problems. There are two main types of birth defects which are structural and functional. Structural birth defects are related to a problem with body parts while functional birth defects are related to a problem with how a body part or body system works. These problems often lead to developmental disabilities and can include things such as sensory problems like varying degrees of hearing loss including deafness. Hearing impairment is the decreased ability to hear and discriminate among sounds which are one of the most common birth defects. Genetic factors are believed to cause 50 percent of cases of hearing impairment in infants and young children. The most common diagnostic hearing test for infants under 6 months of age is the diagnostic auditory brainstem response test. Some of other Tests used to diagnose hearing impairment in older infants and children include visual reinforcement audiometry (VRA), conditioned play audiometry (CPA) and conventional audiometry.
