Sectionalism

By the mid 1800s, each of these sections of thecountry had developed its own way of life. Thesedifferences led to sectionalism – the greater loyaltymany Americans felt toward their own section that tothe country as a whole.

Sectionalism

Southerners felt their way of lifewas being threatened by the North.Northern feared that South wantedto spread slavery throughout thenation. The North’s focus was onbusiness and industry, as theyconcentrated on manufacturing,shipping, and trading goods. TheSouth’s economy centered aroundplantations cash crops, andagricultural growth.

State’s Rights

The issue of slavery became closely tied to state’srights. Southerners argued that the federalgovernment was failing to respect the arrangement inthe Constitution that had bound the states together.They thought the federal government’s growingpowers were being used by the North and the Westagainst the South.

State’s Rights

The 10th amendment was challenged on state’s rightsin the South. The amendment divides the powerbetween the states and federal government. All otherpowers are given to the states or the people, if notspecified to the federal government. The principle ofstate’s rights would eventually lead several Southernstates to secede from the Union.

Conflicts & Compromises

Different sectional interests and the debate overslavery were tearing the nation apart. To keep theUnion together, Congressmen had agreed to a seriesof compromises. The Missouri Compromise (1820)and the Compromise of 1850 temporarily kept thepeace.

Conflicts & CompromisesThe Missouri Compromise (1820), It set the patternby admitting one free state and one slave state in theUnion. The Compromise of 1850, was the issue of thenew lands of the Mexican Cession by admittingCalifornia as a free state. The series of compromisesfailed to keep the nation from splitting in two overthe issue of slavery.

In the decades leading up to the Civil War,abolitionists leaders were men and women ofcourage who sought to make the issue of slavery.The book Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet BeecherStowe wrote about the evils of slavery and stirredthe public beliefs of the North.

Slavery

Some slaves escaped from the South with the help ofthe Underground Railroad – a vast network of peoplewho helped fugitive slaves escape the North whereslavery had been abolish. In exchange, Congresspassed a tighter Fugitive Slave Law, letting Southernslave owners hunt down slaves who escaped to theNorth.

Dred Scott v. Stanford

A Southern slave, Dred Scott, was taken by his ownerto the North and then back into slavery in the South.Scott sued for his freedom. Having been on free soil,he argued that he could not be taken back intoslavery.

Dred Scott v. Stanford

The Supreme Court decision decided that Scott couldnot sue for his freedom in a federal court because hewas not a citizen. No African American, whether slaveor free, was an American citizen – or could everbecome one. As a result of the Dred Scott decision,slavery was allowed in all territories and that slaverycould spread.

Election of 1860

Deep divisions existed among Americans over thefuture of the nation and especially over the issue ofslavery. In the Election of 1860, the RepublicanParty nominated Abraham Lincoln “Honest Abe”opposed (against) the extension of slavery.

Democrats could not agreeon a candidate. North andSouth Democrats choseseparate candidates. Thesplit party allowed Lincolnto win the election withonly 39% of the popularvote. Lincoln did notcampaign in the South, andnot surprisingly, did not wina single Southern state.

Southern Secession

In the weeks following the election, talk of secessionfilled the air. Alarmed senators formed a committeeto search for yet another compromise that might holdthe nation together. They had to do something to stopthe rush toward disunion and disaster.

Southern Secession

When Lincoln won the election,Southerners were outraged. SouthCarolina immediately secededfrom the Union. Six otherSouthern states followed SouthCarolina’s example by secedingbefore Lincoln took office. Theseincluded Texas, where a statewideconvention decided on secessionand formed the ConfederateStates of America.
