French and Indian War (1754-1763)
Hooray! Great Britain wins the French and Indian War and her race for land in North America! The bad news is: War is EXPENSIVE. Great Britain in now in DEBT!
Parliament voted to tax the Americans directly to pay back the cost of the French and Indian War.

Proclamation of 1763
The colonists could not settle west of the Appalachian Mountains. The proclamation angered colonists who had hoped to move to the fertile Ohio River Valley.

Sugar Act (1764)
This law placed a tax on sugar, molasses, wine, coffee, and other luxury items that were shipped to the colonies.
It also called for strict enforcement of the act and harshpunishment of smugglers.

A cost-saving measure that required the colonies to quarter, or house, British soldiers where there were no barracks or soldier quarters.
Colonists had to furnish thesoldiers with transportation,candles, and cider. They even had to wash the soldiers'clothes!

Clash between British troops and colonists on March 5, 1770. A group of colonists, began to taunt a British solider at the Customs House. They threw snowballs and stones and called him names like "Lobsterback."The soldiers opened fire on the mob and 5 colonists died, includingCrispus Attucks.

On the night of December 16, 1773, the Sons of Liberty dressed as Indians and boarded three English ships loaded with tea that were docked in Boston Harbor. The men dumped 342 chest of valuable tea in the harbor in protest to the Tea Act.

"Common Sense" was a short book/pamphlet that reminded colonists that England's laws had taken away their freedoms and hurt their economy. It stated that a complete break from England was necessary. He urged Americans to declare their independence and set up a republic.
