CAVE CITY, Ky.— The Mammoth Cave Jellystone Park celebrated two major milestones on Monday with the grand opening of Karst Beach, a 2.3-acre pond and splash beach with a floating water sports park, as well as the opening of its very own Nathan’s Famous hot dog franchise.

“These new attractions are going to provide a big boost in tourism revenue not only for us, but for the Commonweath of Kentucky,” said Bill Pott, who co-owns and operates the Mammoth Cave Jellystone

Park with his wife, Kay.Jay Hall, executive director

of the Kentucky Office of Film and Development, will join the Pott family and top Jellystone Park officials for Monday’s 9 a.m. grand opening event, which will usher in a period of increased revenue and tourism for the Mammoth Cave Jellystone Park and the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The public is invited to attend the event, which will include a flag raising and Pledge of Allegiance with Yogi Bear, short speeches, tours of the park, which currently includes

125 campsites and 74 rental cabins, as well as prizes and giveaways of Yogi Bear themed merchandise.

“The Karst Beach water play park and Nathan’s Famous franchise are part of a $10.7 million expansion effort that will draw even more visitors to our Cave City park while generating nearly $3.5 million in sales and income taxes for the Commonwealth of Kentucky during the next 10 years,” Bill Pott said, citing statistics from an economic impact study prepared by Chicago-based Hunden

Strategic Partners.Bill Pott, for his

part, said Karst Beach is a major new amenity for the Mammoth Cave Jellystone Park, which first opened in 1974, and which the Pott family has owned and operated since 2004. Karst Beach includes a new 2.3 acre man-made pond and splash beach with a 110-foot by 130-foot long floating sports park with water trampolines and slides. The floating sports park, called a Wibit, is designed to accommodate up to 100 people at a time.

The Mammoth Cave Jellystone Park

has also become the second Jellystone Park in North America to have a full Nathan’s Famous restaurant franchise on site after the Jellystone Park in Luray, Va.

The $10.7 million expansion includes construction of five additional playgrounds, five additional bathhouses, a pedal cart track and day use pet kennels. A major new building was also added encompassing registration, offices and a retail area called Huckleberry Knob, which includes souvenirs, gifts, toys and other items.

Food options are also housed in the new building, including Nathan’s Famous hot dogs, Hunt Brothers Pizza and Swirlstation ice cream.

The Potts are currently adding 100 campsites and 20 rental cabins as part of their Phase I expansion with a targeting completion date of September of this year. Phase II of the expansion, which has yet to commence, will include additional campsites and cabins.

The Potts say their expansion will have a positive effect on the Cave City economy, not only producing short-term construction jobs, but an eventual permanent increase in Jellystone Park’s workforce from 55 to 100 full- and part-time employees during the peak summer camping seasons.

The Cave City Jellystone Park has received national attention and several awards in recent years. U.S. News & World Report named

it one of “The 8 Coolest Campgrounds for Families” in 2016, while the Travel Channel named it one of the 10 best campgrounds for families in 2015.

Last year, the Potts received the Dan O’Connell Service Award from Leisure Systems, Inc. (LSI), the Milford, Ohio-based company that franchises over 85 Jellystone Parks across the U.S. and Canada. The award recognizes Jellystone Park owners who have made exemplary efforts to expand the campground industry.

“We’re putting in the amenities and activities that people want, and they’re willing to travel to get those amenities and attractions,” Bill Pott said, adding that 55 percent of his campers come from out of state. For more information, please visit www.jellystonemammothcave.com

ZUMBROTA, Minn. - Dozens of campers could be seen swimming, biking and lounging at the Shades of Sherwood campground pool on Saturday.

This comes after a recent report from the Minnesota Department of Health citing a cryptosporidium outbreak and linking it to the site.

Often simply called “crypto,” it is the most common cause of recreational water illness outbreaks in the United States.

After following suggested MDH protocols and closing the nearby pond, owner Mike Thoreson said Shades of Sherwood has been open for business for campers.

“Our first priority obviously is everybody being safe and healthy,” Thoreson said. “We’ve followed every recommendation that the MDH has given us.”

The MDH report released Friday said 72 people have now been identified as part of a waterborne illness outbreak associated with the campground. It also said the first person became ill on July 1 and the most recent became ill on Aug. 3.

Thoreson thinks the report - as well as many subsequent news stories - has been misleading.

“The numbers they are pushing in that press release are not confirmed

cases, and I had asked them to make that clear,” he said. “With the MDH continuing to drum it up, people are thinking that we don’t have it essentially under control. It makes it look like it’s still coming from here.”

AN unusually warm summer is sending mid-valley residents to area waterways and Linn County parks, day-use areas and waysides in record numbers, according to parks director Brian Carroll.

“We’re busy everywhere,” Carroll said. “The heat is definitely driving people to water. Our day use areas like Lewis Creek on Foster Reservoir, has been packed. We’re having a difficult time moving cars through fast enough, and our parking areas are filling up quickly.”

Carroll said his staff has been “trying to accommodate the large crowds, but it can be a struggle at times. With the water level at Green Peter down, it’s putting much more pressure on facilities at Foster Reservoir.”

Carroll said camping slips have been full all summer,

indicating possibly another record year for the parks department. Linn County owns or manages about 600 camping slips, plus Edgewater Marina on Foster Reservoir and several dock areas. Campsites range from rustic such as Forest Service sites along the South Santiam River east of Sweet Home, to spaces for large motor homes and popular group camping areas.

Facilities range from a boat launch near Peoria on the Calapooia to Clear Lake Resort near the Santiam Pass.

“It seems like we are constantly on an upwards trajectory unless there is some type of event, such as forest fires,” Carroll said.

Clear Lake Resort near the Santiam Pass is experiencing another busy summer, Carroll said.

“Business has definitely been brisk there,” Carroll said. “The cabins are always full in the summer, but we’re also seeing a brisk business at the lodge. Our records indicate we’re really busy from about 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., even mid-week.”

Carroll said the county purchased the popular recreation site from the Santiam Fish and Game Association in 2007 and improvements have been made each year since.

“Parking is a struggle on

busy days,” Carroll said. “We’ve discussed ways to alleviate parking problems for years, but the steep terrain leading down to the lake makes it very difficult. We do encourage anyone who can to park at the sno park back on the highway.”

Carroll said boat rentals continue to be popular.

“We plan to add more rowboats and kayaks,” Carroll said. “We’re also trying to add

more items in the store, but there is limited space. We’ve also changed the restaurant menu a bit.”

Carroll said a new potable water well is complete at Waterloo Campground, and he hopes to have it online within a week.

“We’re just waiting for final health department approval,” Carroll said.

With Labor Day weekend just around the corner, Carroll said most campground slips are already reserved.

“Labor Day is usually always busy regardless of weather,” Carroll said. “It’s the last big fling of the summer before school starts.”

After a brief reprieve over the weekend, the mid-valley forecast calls for temperatures to heat up again on Monday, with highs in the 90s expected most of next week.

HENDERSON County, N.C.- County commissioners have decided to hold off on code changes clarifying regulations for RV parks and park model RV parks, specifically having to do with tiny homes.

Henderson County Planning Director Autumn Radcliff said the changes, spurred by

a recent application, have been debated by the county Planning Board over the past several months.

The proposals now head back to the Planning Board with specific questions from the commissioners on septic issues, namely about language allowing a central holding permit that can only be approved by the state on a temporary basis, according to Commissioner Bill Lapsley.

Amendments to the existing RV park requirements would designate density, buffer requirements permissible permanent structures, setbacks, road standards and

more for the parks.Proposed changes can

be found with the board’s Aug. 15 agenda at www.hendersoncountync.gov.

One member of the public spoke during the public hearing, William Bower, a resident of Druid Hills who said a neighbor has constructed a tiny home in their backyard.

Bower said that if the tiny home gets an address, it would cause him and 10 other Druid Hills residents to have to then change their addresses accordingly.

MCKENZIE County, N.D.- The McKenzie County Department of Emergency Management helped to organize a barbeque event for those adversely affected by the tornado that touched down and destroyed much of the Prairie View RV Park in Watford City, North Dakota. The event was not only meant as a gesture of care and compassion but also helped put emergency management personnel, volunteers and supporters in direct contact with those who need recovery assistance.

According to Jappe, there were probably 300 lots on the ground at the Prairie View RV Park, with 79 deemed unlivable, and everyone was invited to attend the barbeque. The event was kept open later for those who

were working long days and wanted to attend after they got off work. All of those who were hit by the tornado were invited to attend, including a few residents who were right outside the park and got hit by the wind.

The Roundup spoke with Karolin Jappe, the McKenzie County Emergency Manager, about the event which brought together the emergency and disaster volunteers with the victims of the tornado.

"It was very nice," Jappe told The Roundup. "We have so far had 59 different families or single individuals that have came in. It means they could take whatever they wanted that we had available and also apply for assistance."

Jappe continued, "To qualify for the fundraiser that's been ongoing, those affected by

the tornado have to qualify through Lutheran Social Services. And then, we have an Unmet Needs Committee, which will evaluate their specific situation. Once that intake is done and verify income and loss and so on, Lutheran Social Services should be

able to disburse funds and get checks to people by September."

Not everyone with tornado damage has sought help, however.

Jappe reported, "Some people chose not to seek help for various reason. Some had insurance or some think that they don't need handouts. I'd rather we not really think about it as a hand out. And for some people, I don't know the reason they haven't sought the assistance that's available."

"The one who hosted the event was Equinor, formally Statoil, and they put the whole barbeque together for us. And then there are those who I call 'my little angels.' This are the ladies in the community that have been so, so helpful. There's no way I couldn't have done what I have done without the ladies in the

community."

"For example," Jappe said, "ten days after the tornado I had a scheduled vacation, and I changed things around, but when I did have to leave they stepped up to help. They are a blessing in disguise. I'm bringing in a training in the future so if something like this happens again we'll have a little team put together."

Jappe reports that they have received approximately 250 thousand dollars in donations for the tornado victims.

Jappe said, "You can't imagine the number of people who have donated. I have a list, not of personal names, but of companies and businesses that have given. I also included in that record the people who have items and helped with the clean up, like those who brought the dump truck, the porta potties and so much more."

The sizable relief fund was not contributed to by the federal or state government, but was entirely locally supported.

Jappe said, "We really didn't need any help from the state. The county is amazing and I've never seen anything like it to be honest with you. I'm so grateful to live here and I'll probably live here the rest of my life."

NEW PARIS, Ohio - Ryan and Tatjana Becijos knew they wanted a tiny house. They just didn’t know where to put it.

So a few weeks ago, the San Diego couple packed up their Volvo and drove 2,100 miles to New Paris, Ohio, a Preble County village a few miles from the Indiana border.

The couple became the third residents of Cedar Springs Tiny Village, one of a growing number of communities exclusively reserved for tiny homes.

The Becijoses’ cross-country trek illustrates a glaring challenge with the fashionable tiny-home movement: There’s no easy place to put the homes.

“You see tiny homes all the time, but you don’t realize you can’t just put them anywhere,” said Ryan Becijos, 32, a

computer programmer on leave from his job.

Most cities prohibit tiny homes because they are not on foundations or because they fall below minimum size requirements for a permanent residence. Owners might be able to park them on a rural lot, but then must find electric, sewer and water connections.

“In most places in America, you can’t live tiny, period,” said Kevin Polk, executive director of the American Tiny House Association. “There are very, very few places in the country that allow a primary residence of that size.”

Even recreational-vehicle parks, the most common answer, aren’t always hospitable to tiny homes.

Cedar Springs offers one solution. The 4-acre community forms a strip along

the shore of Silver Lake, a 15-acre spring-fed former quarry a few blocks south of downtown New Paris.

The property owner, Gerald Brubaker, teamed up with Modern Tiny Living, a tiny-home builder, on the project that they call the first tiny-home community in Ohio.

“It really lends itself to an ideal development for tiny homes,” Brubaker said. “There’s definitely a market out there striving for that, and when you look across Ohio and the Midwest and beyond, there are enough people who want to live that lifestyle.”

Trent Haery, a partner in Modern Tiny Living, welcomed Brubaker’s call.

“I get calls every month from business people around the country asking how they can invest in a tiny-house

community because they see demand, but once they realize the hurdles you have to overcome, they throw in the towel,” Haery said.

Polk said he has heard of about 300 places that allow tiny homes, most of them RV parks and some reserved for low-income residents. A website called Tiny House Talk identifies 32 communities, two in Ohio: Cedar Springs and Wheat Hill Mobile Home

Community in East Palestine, near Youngstown, which has spots for four tiny homes, according to its website.

Cedar Springs includes 27 pads for tiny homes, each with a small patio and water, electric and sewer connections. Monthly rent is about $500.

Kimber Fox became the first full-time resident of Cedar Springs when she arrived in May. She sold her three-bedroom home in Georgia to move closer to her mother, who lives near New Paris.

“It’s been quite a change but I’m by myself, so I was living in only half my house, but I had to clean the whole thing,”

A couple of very tough months are ahead for the wildfire season and firefighting efforts in the western United States, especially California.

Approximately 110 large wildfires are burning across the U.S., and most of these fires are burning in the West, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. Countless acres of brush, which growth was spurred on by winter and spring moisture, have had all summer to dry out.

Extreme heat, dryness, blazing sunshine and accidental and intentional incidents by humans have already contributed to a formidable fire year.

As much as 90 percent of wildfires in the U.S. are

caused by humans, according to the National Park Service.

On Monday, Aug.13, it was announced that a firefighter, who was from the Draper City, Utah, Fire Department, was killed while battling the Mendocino Complex Fire. At least six firefighters have died battling wildfires in California this season.

A firefighting plane battling flames in northeastern Washington crashed on Tuesday. The pilot was able to escape and survived.

Even as sunshine and average temperatures decline

moving forward into the autumn, episodes of wind traditionally increase during September and October.

Temperatures can still spike to triple-digit levels during the first part of autumn. Temperatures have topped 100 F in Los Angeles well into October, and have climbed into the 90s in San Francisco during October.

In coastal areas of California, extreme temperatures during the late summer and

autumn are often accompanied by gusty Santa Ana, Diablo and Sundowner winds.

Even when temperatures are relatively low, gusty winds can still cause a fire to rapidly spread, when the air and brush are dry.

During autumn, weather systems across southern Canada and the

northern U.S. tend to get stronger, when compared to the summer. The circulation around these storms and high pressure areas often cause winds to kick up

farther south as well.Multiple soaking rainstorms

are needed to alleviate the wildfire danger. Even a fraction of the rain the Eastern and Central states have been receiving would help. However, hope for these types of storms are months away for California, much of Oregon, Nevada and Utah.

While thunderstorms from the monsoon pattern can bring temporary relief, the storms

tend to focus on New Mexico, Colorado and parts of Arizona and are too widely scattered to provide relief in a general sense.

A tropical system that tracks far enough to the north to wrap drenching rain across California is a long-shot, even for a busy eastern Pacific hurricane season.

Recurring drought and humid activity have essentially extended the fire season to a year-round concern.

Eventually, lower temperatures later in November and December should offer some relief, even in absence of any major rainstorms. Episodes of wind and temperature spikes could still bring periodic fire weather, however.

While this winter may bring El Niño conditions, there is no guarantee that drenching rain will fall in all areas in need over the western U.S.

Widespread poor air quality to continue

Nationwide, more than 30,000 personnel, including 13,000 in California alone, were battling wild land blazes as of the middle of August, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

The great number and size of the existing fires are producing a vast area of smoke.

Light winds and heat tend to trap the smoke in populated areas.

"The current smoke event is delivering the longest period of unhealthy air quality since Environmental Protection Agency record began in 2000," according to the National Weather Service in Medford, Oregon.

There have been 18 days with unhealthy or worse air quality in Medford during 2018 as of Aug. 15.

Firefighting efforts have contained the Ferguson Fire enough to allow officials to reopen Yosemite National Park on Aug. 14.

Short-term fire risk outlook

for this weekIn the short-

term, heat will again build across the Northwest. Overall winds will be light the first part of this week, compared to the gusty winds that accompanied the cooler air from this past weekend.

There is the potential that a small southward dip in the jet stream could

substantially kick up winds in parts of Washington, Oregon, Northern California and

northwestern Nevada during

the middle to latter part of this

week.

Meanwhile, in the

Southwest, temperatures will

remain near to slightly above

average this week. While

conditions may be slightly

better than the extreme heat

from last week in terms of

firefighting efforts, the risk of

wildfire ignition and spread

will remain high.

No big breaks in the fire

weather are foreseen in the

short term and in the long

range.

ARKANSAS - Administrators at the Buffalo National River want to increase fees at some campsites.

The park last raised camping fees in 2013, said Cassandra Johannsen, a park ranger.

"Camping fees at Buffalo National River are used to pay seasonal staff to maintain camping facilities, and for updates to facilities like hiking trails and amphitheaters," she said.

The park's campsites range from primitive with just vault toilets, no water and no designated sites, to developed areas with electric and water hookups for recreational vehicle camping, according to a news release from Johannsen.

After a campground comparability study, the park

has proposed increasing camping fees at the following locations:

• Sites with water and electric at Buffalo Point Campground: from $22 to $30 a night for up to six people.

• All sites at Tyler Bend Campground and walk-in tent sites at Buffalo Point Campground: from $16 to $20 a night for up to six people.

• Primitive sites (without electricity or showers) at Steel Creek, Kyle's Landing, Ozark, Carver, and Rush campgrounds: from $12 to $20 a night for up to six people (up to four stock animals at Steel Creek Horse Camp).

• No changes are proposed for reserving pavilions; those fees would remain $25 at Ozark and $50 at Tyler Bend and Buffalo Point.

• The fee structure would be revised for group campsites at Buffalo Point and Tyler Bend: from $3 per person per night to a flat rate of $50 per group per night (up to 25 people per site).

• Other campgrounds would continue to allow free camping where no amenities are provided: Erbie, Woolum, South Maumee and Spring Creek.

The park also proposes to allow some tent and horse campsites at Steel Creek Campground and walk-in tent and drive-in sites at Tyler Bend Campground to be reserved in advance on the recreation.gov website. Reserving sites through the website allows visitors to pay by debit or credit card. Those without reservations must pay by cash

or check.Buffalo National River

provides a 50 percent discount on campsite fees for Interagency Senior and Access pass cardholders. More information is available online at https://store.usgs.gov or at park headquarters in Harrison, Steel Creek Ranger Station, Tyler Bend Visitor Center or Buffalo Point Ranger Station.

Adam Higinbothom, sales floor manager at the Pack Rat Outdoor Center in Fayetteville, said the proposed prices don't sound high to him.

"Compared to other campgrounds, that's cheap," he said. "I think $20 is very reasonable, especially for a national recreation area."

Johannsen said camping at Acadia National Park in Maine costs $22 per night for primitive tent sites and $40 per night with water and electric. At Yellowstone National Park, the rate is $15 per night for primitive tent sites and $47 for full hookups, she said.

Johannsen said backcountry camping is free in the Buffalo National River. Backcountry camping is defined as being one-half mile from any developed area (campground, parking lot, trailhead).

Florida declares emergency as red tide blooms

TOXIC algae blooms along Florida's southwestern coast have persisted for months and are taking a deadly toll on marine wildlife. In response, Gov. Rick Scott recently declared a state of emergency in seven coastal counties affected by the algae, which creates a condition known as "red tide."

On Monday (Aug. 13), Scott issued an executive order

providing emergency funding and resources that would help communities rescue and protect wildlife and clean up the pervasive algae.

Scott also allocated additional funds for researching red tide, to better understand its causes and to help researchers develop strategies for preventing future lethal blooms, the governor's representatives

said in a statement.Red tides (which,

despite the name, are not necessarily red) appear in ocean waters when conditions allow naturally occurring single-celled algae - in this case, the toxic Karenia brevis - to multiply and cluster. These blooms occur seasonally in the Gulf of Mexico near Florida, with the red tide typically

emerging in the late summer or early fall and lasting three to five months, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

K. brevis produces a neurotoxin that animals (including humans) can ingest or inhale, and its extended presence is turning Florida beaches into gruesome scenes, with scores of dead animals littering the sandy

shores. The toxic tide has killed or sickened hundreds of sea turtles, shorebirds and manatees, and the amount of dead fish poisoned by the algae can be measured in millions of pounds, the Naples Daily News reported.

In one county alone, residents collected around 535,000 lbs. (nearly 243,000 kilograms) of dead fish, according to the Naples Daily News.

Previously, on June 20, Gov. Scott issued an executive order addressing another toxic algae problem: choking layers of blue-green algae in the St. Lucie River and other Florida waterways, caused by polluted, algae-rich water dispersed from Lake Okeechobee.

Red tides and other harmful algae blooms can persist for as long as 18 months, affecting thousands of square miles, the FWC reported.

BURLESON, TX- Reader´s Digest has joined MSN.com, Country Living magazine, U.S. News & World Report and The Travel Channel in listing Jellystone Parks among its top family camping destinations in the United States.

Reader’s Digest recently highlighted the Jellystone Park in Burleson, Texas on its list of the “Best Parks in Every State,” while MSN recently included seven Jellystone Park locations on its list of “35 Amazing RV Parks Where No RV is Required.” The MSN story highlighted Jellystone Parks in Burleson and Canyon Lake, Texas; Cave City, Ky.; Gardiner, N.Y.; Monticello, Iowa; Tabor City, N.C.; and Mannford, Okla.

Last year, U.S. News & World Report included the Jellystone Park in Mill Run, Penn. on its list of the “Eight Coolest Campgrounds for

Families,” while Country Living magazine included the Jellystone Park in Harrisville, Penn. on a list of “11 Must Visit RV Campgrounds in America” in 2015. The Travel Channel, for its part, named the Jellystone Park in Cave City, Ky. one of the 10 top family campgrounds in 2015.

“Jellystone Parks are increasingly being recognized by media outlets across the country as a top family destination, regardless of whether you camp in a luxury cabin, a yurt, an RV or a tent,” said Kelly Jones, vice president of operations of Leisure Systems, Inc., which franchises Jellystone Parks across the United States and Canada.

In addition to offering some of the campground industry’s best swimming pools,

water play parks and rental accommodations, Jellystone Parks are famous for their organized family activities and themed weekends with Yogi Bear, which help families create unique memories. Weekend themes range from family athletic competitions with various sporting events to Christmas in July with Christmas Carol Karaoke and other holiday themed activities to pre-Halloween themed weekends with costume and campsite decorating contests and trick or treating. Other activities across Jellystone Parks include arts and crafts, scavenger hunts, face

painting, jumping pillows, gem mining as well as plentiful interactions with Yogi Bear, Boo Boo, Cindy Bear and Ranger Smith.

Smoke from California’s wildfires is reaching Washington and Baltimore

LEST anyone living in the D.C. area think Western wildfires are a problem 3,000 miles away, they might take

a whiff of the air in their own backyard. Yes, high-altitude winds have carried the smoke across the country into the

Mid-Atlantic region.“I walked outside earlier

and definitely smelled wildfire smoke,” tweeted @annikaep from downtown Washington on Wednesday.

Capital Weather Gang readers queried on Twitter reported smelling smoke all over the region.

In a forecast Tuesday, the National Weather Service predicted that the jet stream, the fast-moving current of upper level winds, would carry smoke across the country but had expected it to remain “above the surface.”

However, some of it has found its way down toward

the ground.

Joel Dreessen, an air quality forecaster for Maryland’s Department of Environment, confirmed the smoke is affecting the air we breathe. He said the smoke had wafted over the air above us for “many” days but had “made its way to the surface in noticeable fashion” as of Thursday. He noted that several constituents of smoke were detected in elevated quantities including fine particulate matter, carbon monoxide and black carbon.
