Contract awarded ALTRAC Light Rail was announced, in mid December 2014, as the successful consortium to build and deliver the CBD and South East Light Rail (CSELR) line, with construction now expected to finish one year ahead of schedule in 2018.

ALTRAC Light Rail comprises leading national and international companies including Transdev Sydney, Alstom Transport Australia, Acciona Infrastructure Australia and Capella Capital.

ALTRAC Light Rail’s proposal resulted in a number of modifications and improvements to the project.

These modifications were placed on public exhibition in December 2014 and were approved by the Department of Planning and Environment in February 2015.

It is expected that customers will be able to use the new light rail service from early 2019, which will ultimately move up to 13,500 people every hour.

Further details on the modifications and the submissions made during the public exhibition are available at www.sydneylightrail.com.au.

Project improvementsA number of improvements have been made to CSELR project design, including:

• greater passenger capacity• more efficient journey time in the CBD• reduced visual impact from overhead wiring

structures in the CBD• improved crowd management during special

events at Moore Park.

Transport for NSW continues to work with stakeholders, including City of Sydney and Randwick City Council to ensure the project design optimises public transport outcomes for the local community and reduces its impact on the environment. Final designs for interchanges and light rail stops will be developed in detail over the coming months and will include plans to deliver seamless connectivity for cyclists and pedestrians.

Early works updateFollowing consultation with local businesses and community members, early works were carried out on eight intersections along George Street over a number of weekends between October and January.

These works were essential to ensure existing underground utilities, such as power, water, gas and telecommunications at a number of George Street intersections were identified, relocated and, in some cases, protected to minimise any disruption to businesses, residents and commuters when major construction starts in the CBD later this year.

This work follows the largest survey of sub-surface utilities in Sydney with more than 3,500 pit surveys and over 200 trench investigations carried out along the 12 kilometre alignment.

Early works are also currently underway at Moore Park Tennis Centre, expected to be completed in March, and work has also started in Surry Hills.

Further night time and weekend preparatory work will be carried out in the coming months. The project team will continue to work with businesses, residents and the community and will ensure all are kept informed of scheduled early works.

Delivery

Utility works on George Street at Bridge and Grosvenor Streets.

Major constructionAs we move closer to the start of major construction, preparatory work will continue across the route and communities, residents, businesses and other stakeholders will be advised of work well before it begins.

Major construction is not expected to begin in George Street until September or October and there will be no changes to bus routes in this area until that time.

Work will be staged along the route, to reduce the impact on residents and businesses.

Transport for NSW and ALTRAC Light Rail will continue to consult with communities and stakeholders and provide information on upcoming work to minimise disruptions, and to maintain access along the route.

Additional dedicated staff will also be employed on the ground to work closely with residents, businesses and local communities to inform them of developments and provide advance notice of work activities in each area.

ALTRAC Light Rail is finalising the detailed work schedule so communities and businesses have plenty of notice when work is taking place.
