  • Make your mark, leave a gift in your Will.

  • Community Broadcasting is by the community, for the community.

That’s why the Community Broadcasting Foundation is so important. For more than 30 years, we have been helping over 500 radio and TV stations keep the microphones open, to create innovative, independent, localised content.

We do this by securing and distributing funding to those stations nationally – funding which provides on average just 10% of the station’s income.

Our work has made a significant difference over the last three decades, however there is so much more to do to provide a sustainable platform for community broadcasters.

This is why I’m extending this invitation to you to leave a gift to the Community Broadcasting Foundation in your Will. Help us to strengthen our vital sector over the long term.

Every gift, however large or small, makes a lasting and significant difference to strengthening the viability of community broadcasting.

Peter Batchelor President Community Broadcasting Foundation

    Remember the Community Broadcasting Foundation

in your Will and leave your mark on community

    media.

    A message from our President

  • We all know that having a Will is important, but

did you know that less than two-thirds of the adult

    population has a valid Will?

Having a Will gives you peace of mind that your

wishes will be carried out in regards to the

distribution of your property and assets.

A Will also allows you to appoint an Executor - the

person who will carry out your wishes - and

provide guardianship of any minors in your care.

Having a solicitor or trustee help you to write or

amend your Will ensures that your Will is valid and

    complies with legal standards.

Making a valid Will means that your family, friends

and those that have been important to you are

prioritised. It also gives you an opportunity to show

your support for organisations that you value, such

    as the Community Broadcasting Foundation.

It is important to review your Will when your

    circumstances change.

    Having a Will is important

  • We will always use your gift in the way that you want it to be used. Keeping the wording of your Will quite generic, means that we can channel your gift to the area of community broadcasting that is in the most need at the time. As you might understand, these needs will change over time.

8CCC in Alice Springs and Tennant Creek used funding provided by the Community Broadcasting Foundation to improve its long-term viability.

With the help of the CBF, 20 newvolunteers were trained, five other grants were successfully applied for, six new programs went to air and connection to the local community was improved through outside broadcasts at local community events.

How will my gift be used?

  • Funding provided by the Community Broadcasting Foundation helped to establish the SYN Nation Youth Media Project. The project offers young people aged 12-25 the skills and platforms to be creators - not justconsumers - of media, and gives them the opportunity tohave their programs broadcast to national audiences.

The majority of ‘SYN-ers’ stated that because of the project they became better at networking, better at public speaking and better at training others.

    Make a difference

  • To make sure that your wishes are undertaken exactly as you would like, it is important to use the correct wording, so that your Will is legally valid.

We can’t provide you with legal advice, so make sure that you obtain your own independent counsel.

In general there are three ways to leave a gift in your Will:

    1. A special gift2. A percentage gift3. A residuary gift

If you have an existing Will, it is easy to add the Community Broadcasting Foundation to it through what is know as a Codicil. A Codicil is just an update that gets attached to your Will. Like any part of your Will, you can update it again at any time.

If you are writing a new Will or want to make significant changes to your current Will, we suggest that you seek legal advice.

Below are examples of the wording that you or your solicitor or trustee might find useful.

Specific gift “I give [the sum of money or description of property etc] of my estate, free of all duties, to the Community Broadcasting Foundation Limited for its general purposes.”

Percentage gift “I give [%] of my estate, free of all duties, to the Community Broadcasting Foundation Limited for its general purposes.”

Residuary gift A residuary gift is one where you give a portion of all of what is left in your estate after specific gifts (for example to friends and family), taxes and debts are fulfilled.

“I give the rest and residue of my estate, free of all duties, to the Community Broadcasting Foundation Limited for its general purposes.”

If you choose to provide equal shares of your estate for additional residual beneficiaries you could use the following wording:

“I give the rest and residue of my estate, free of all duties, to the Community Broadcasting Foundation Limited and to [insert name(s) of other residual beneficiaries] in equal share for its general purposes.”

    Suggested legal wording

  • Why is having a Will so important? Having a Will makes sure that those you care about are provided for in the way that you want, and allows you to make your mark.

Is it hard to make a Will? No, making a Will is simple. To ensure your Will reflects your wishes and is written in a legally-binding way, we suggest that you obtain legal advice from your solicitor or trustee. They can also advise you on things such as guardianship and power of attorney.

I already have a Will, what should I do?That’s wonderful. Should you wish to include the Community Broadcasting Foundation in your Will, you can easily update to it through what is known as a Codicil. A Codicil simply gets attached to your Will and then becomes a part of it.

How will my gift be used? The Community Broadcasting Foundation will always follow the wishes and instructions that come with any gift.

Keeping the instructions around your gift quite general means that we can more easily fulfill your wishes and directly support to areas of greatest need (which may change over time).

My gift will only be small, is that okay? Any gift that you choose to make, small or large, is greatly valued by the Community Broadcasting Foundation - the choice is always yours.

How can I use my Will to support Community Broadcasting? By choosing to give a gift in your Will, you will be supporting the community broadcasting sector as a whole. By supporting the Community Broadcasting Foundation, you are supporting over 500 stations across Australia that are committed to access, diversity, independence, localism, multiculturalism, inclusion and social justice.

Can I make a living gift? Of course. If you prefer to make a donation during your lifetime to support an issue or area that is important to you, please contact us. Your living gift is an opportunity to watch how your generous contribution can make a difference.

If I include the Community Broadcasting Foundation in my Will, do I have to let you know? That decision is yours to make. Any information you give us will be kept completely confidential.

Letting us know your intentions will help us to plan better for the future, and means that you can be recognised now, should you wish to be.

If you would like to let us know about your decision to include the Community Broadcasting Foundation in your will please call 03 8341 5900 or email [email protected]
