In the fall of her freshman year, Natalie Oronoz (Nano) was playing for the Varsity Soccer & Varsity Basketball team at La Serna High School. During one of her soccer games, Natalie’s knee popped out of place while kicking the ball. She put on a brace and went back in the game. Shortly after, the opposite team dribbled the ball towards Natalie and the player ran directly into her injured knee. Immediately, Natalie’s family rushed her to the emergency room. At 14, with a torn ACL, Natalie was facing every soccer player’s worst nightmare: the possibility of never returning to a sport she loved.
On January 6, 2011, Natalie had surgery on her knee, and started physical therapy soon after. Unfortunately, after 5 months of physical therapy at 2 different facilities, she was not making any progress. She began to hear that she’d never recover and that her soccer career was over. However, she found out about Coury & Buehler Physical Therapy from her surgeon and decided to see if CBPT could help.
By the time the Oronoz family came to CBPT, it
was already 6 months since Natalie’s surgery and she still had pain and significant limitations. After the first evaluation with Rich Coury PT, MPT, the Oronoz family knew that CBPT was going to help Natalie heal and become an even stronger athlete. In just three and a half months, Natalie regained her motion and strength. She returned to her team and played in her very first game post-surgery. A year later, in May of 2013, at 16-years-old, Natalie was offered a full ride scholarship to play at Cal State Fullerton!
Reflecting on her experience at CBPT, Natalie and her family are grateful towards Rich and CBPT for setting up goals and providing the rehab and care she needed. Coaches who have since worked with Natalie can’t even tell she had surgery, based on her performance!
Two years after her surgery, Natalie’s attitude is what is most admirable. Reflecting on her journey, she says, ”Tearing my ACL was the best thing that could have happened to me regarding soccer.” Now she is stronger, faster and more determined than ever and her entire family cannot give enough thanks to Rich and the team at CBPT for inviting them into the family and pushing her to be better than before her injury!
“Tearing my ACL was the
best thing that could have
happened to me regarding
soccer...”

THE SECRET TO EATING HEALTHY!
EMAIL Brandon: [email protected]
What’s YOUR secret?
Brandon enjoys spending time with his wife & kids, running, hiking & kayaking. He can be found eating at
the tastiest places in town!
THE PLAN:
SMOOTHIES & SALADSBONUS TIPS!!!
The secret to healthy eating begins with a plan for breakfast & lunch! This is where many of us make mistakes - our
first two meals! We are usually rushing out the door in
the morning and grab something quick to eat - typically
processed or packaged. Then at lunch, we typically run out
of the office for a quick bite - and end up grabbing fast food.
By not planning out your breakfast & lunch, you are more
likely to fall into these unhealthy traps.
If you don’t start the day right, you’ve already lost the battle.
By waiting until dinner to eat any fruits or vegetables, it is
near impossible to catch up on your daily needs.
This plan (for breakfast and lunch) guarantees that you will:
- Consume extremely healthy meals
- Get more than your entire day’s worthy of fruits & veggies in TWO meals!
- Not waste money on eating out (save this extra $ for a nice meal on the weekend!
My plan consists of the 2 S’s: Smoothies & Salads! GREEN SMOOTHIES for breakfast (along with whole grain cereal
or slow cooked oatmeal) & VEGETABLE SALAD for lunch.
• BREAKFAST: Every morning I make a fruit smoothie and blend in some greens (spinach, kale, collards…). This
is something my whole family enjoys – even my kids, I swear! Plus, making this smoothie is much easier than you think! (See the bonus tips for a video link that will show you the recipe!) We eat this with some slow cooked oatmeal
or whole grain cereal.
• LUNCH: Each evening I (actually my wife - ha!) make a vegetable salad for the following day’s lunch. Don’t be
fooled, not all salads are equal. The salad I make contains many different vegetables and no creamy or fat filled
dressing. Watch the video for the ingredients! Did I mention it was delicious?
THE SECRET:
Don’t let your New Year’s Resolutions slip away this year with unrealistic goals! Instead of focusing on making BIG changes, why not follow these simple suggestions to create a healthy change that can last all of 2014!
- Wake up & drink an 8 oz. glass of water to start your day.
- Don’t skip breakfast (Read Brandon’s article for a breakfast smoothie idea above!)
- If you like cereal, try switching to cereals with high fiber for breakfast.
- Pack your own lunch at least twice a week, you will pack healthier instinctively, and save money!
- Eat fish once a week as your protein.
- Don’t buy food when you already feel hungry - it’s a trap!
- Drink fewer sweetened drinks and focus on water, or for flavor, coconut water.
- Don’t forget…Get enough sleep!! Without it, your mood and hormones can often lead you down the road of unhealthy snacks and sugars.

THE RESOLUTION: It’s that time of year again - “This will be the year that I eat healthy!”
THE PROBLEM: There’s so much confusion on what it means to eat healthy. Do I try the Atkins diet? What’s a wheat belly? Bread or rice? Juice fast? What exactly is processed food? There’s too many messages & always a new fad!
THE BASICS: I am here to tell you that eating healthy is much easier than you think! A common sense, practical, and
doable approach to healthy eating is the only long term solution. Fad diets and trends never work. EVER.

CHANELLE was born & bred in So Cal, but cold weather, cozy pajamas, layered
apparel, rain & changing leaves are her slice of heaven!

Serve hot with a piece of cracked wheat sourdough bread, toasted with olive oil. Cheers!
It is FINALLY cold in California and I’m lovin’ it! However, it’s that time of year where it’s easy to get weighed down (literally) with all the baked goods and rich foods of the season. For the days we don’t want to live in sinful over-indulgence we turn to recipes that are great for our health and holiday spirit!
For your enjoyment, we have a heartwarming soup that is easy to make, hearty, VEGETARIAN, and full of those tasty veggies that give our bodies the vitamins and nutrients they need.
