Memory of the HeartlandAmongst Bangkok’s neighbourhoods on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River remains a peaceful small community composing of different races, religions and cultures.Take a nostalgic trip to Kudichin Community to visit Bangkok in the past. Morning9.00 Along the Chao Phraya RiverStart the journey on Chao Phraya express boat from Sathorn Pier heading north to Tha Tian. Wonder at relationship among the river, people’s life, communities and old buildings along the river banks. Go across the river toWat Arun (Temple of dawn), the site of multi-cultural art which appeals in the temple’s central Khmer-style tower ‘Prang’, which is decorated with colourful porcelain from China on the stucco.
11.30 Dessert GourmetAt Ban Sakul Thong, the real residence of thePortuguese-Thai, learn five-generation-old royal recipes of Portuguese-Thai desserts; crispy pastry with minced chicken ‘Krathong Thong Sai Sappayak’ as well as Thai steamed dumplings in flower and bird shapes ‘Chor Muang' and ‘Jeep Tua Nok'.
Noon12.00 Portuguese - Thai FusionTry old fusion delicacies starting with seasonal menus of Thai royal appetisers, such as sweet minced pork on a fruit slice‘Ma Hor’, egg crepe with sweet minced pork ‘Rhum’, Thaicrispy dumpling ‘Thung Thong’, and the desserts freshly fromthe workshop. Main dish is Portuguese - Thai noodle, an excellent mixture of spaghetti white source and Thai chicken curry.
Afternoon13.00 Folk LifeAppreciate a unique mixture of diverse races and culturesin the community during the visit to Baan Kudichin Museum, which presents charm of the neighbourhood in its exhibitions showing the local’s history; its origin,cultural diversity, and lifestyle.
15.00 Unity of RacesObserve how to make fusion Portuguese cake ‘Kudichin’, a hybrid dessert between the west and the east. While the treat is made from flour, egg and sugar asa Portuguese recipe, it is topped with raisin, dried plum and winter melon candy in Chinese fashion. Try and shop this native dessert as a souvenir before going back across the river to the city.
14.00 Memory of the PastHave an easy walk around Church of Santa Cruz, the site which used to be Portuguese village. Appreciate old memories packed in small alleys before dropping by Ruen Chantanaparp, the residence of which original structure of the last century is still reserved.
