Arkansas (Gamma-Chi) University of Arkansas Chancellor Gearhart awarded Lambda Chi Alpha with the Chancellor’s Award for Academic Excellence at the Student Involvement Awards, an award that acknowledges those men’s and women’s student organizations with the highest GPA for the fall semester. Chapter President David Koehler accepted the award.

For the spring semester, the chapter once again earned the highest GPA of all fraternities with a 3.32 GPA, above the all-fraternity average of a 3.0. Nineteen brothers earned a 4.0 GPA. They were Anthony Adkins, Craig Bailey , Hunter Dunn, Scott Fleck, Chad Hankins, Josh Harpool, Conner Hieger, John Hottovy, Kasper Huber, Micheal Leonard, Nathan Mulroy, Zane Muzaffar, Brian Oller, Jerrod Roberts, Joseph Rulli, Tyler Soo, Tim Tucker, Cole Wood, and Micheal Zangari. On April 19, 2010, Greek Life held the annual Order of Omega Award Ceremony at the Fayetteville Town Center. At the banquet, the chapter received its fifth consecutive Award of

Excellence, given annually to a handful of fraternities and sororities that consistently perform best in a number of areas, including academics, educational program, campus involvement, and community service. In addition, Geoffrey Storm was awarded the Outstanding Junior Award. Within the chapter, Storm has served as alumni

chairman, served as a Big Brother in fall 2008 and 2009, as well as representing the chapter in Indianapolis, Indiana, in summer 2009 at the Lambda Chi Alpha Stead Leadership Seminar. He also has served as Associated Student Government secretary for the 2009-2010 school year. There he devotes a great deal of time toward campus safety, overseeing the expansion of the campus’s Safe Ride Program. Academically, Geoff is a Chancellor’s Scholar pursuing a double-major in English and Political Science as part of the Fulbright Honors Program. In summer 2009, he studied abroad in South Africa on an Honors College Study Abroad Grant.

Atlanta Area Alumni Association The Atlanta Area Alumni Association will be hosting an alumni brother reception from 6-8 p.m., on September 21, 2010, at Ansley Golf Club.

Butler (Alpha-Alpha) Chris Barrick (2004), former associate director of communications/IT for the International Headquarters’ staff, is the new director of client relations for Indianapolis-based Patriot Software Solutions. While on staff, Barrick was instrumental in building the Fraternity’s branding and marketing campaigns over the last five years and he helped lead the successful transition of the online version of the Cross & Crescent and the replacement of the membership database program.

California-Berkeley (Mu) Michael Painter (1956) was named one of the California-

Berkeley’s 2010 Distinguished Alumni. Painter’s interest in landscape architecture began with a part-time job doing site construction as a high school student with the Southern California design/build firm Hahn & Hoffman. Today Painter continues as president of MPA Design and remains active in civic organizations. He serves on the advisory committee for SPUR and on the board of the Foundation for San Francisco’s Architectural Heritage.

Cal State-Fullerton (Phi-Epsilon) Peter Hopkins (1984) was elected to the board of the

Cal State-Fullerton Alumni Association as vice president of membership and marketing. He also is the strategic account manager for FedEx Services Division.

Cal State-Fresno (Iota-Gamma) Hal H. Huffsmith (1970) was named one of the

2010 alumni of the year by Cal State-Fresno, Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology.

Cal State-Northridge (Beta-Rho)

A former staff member, Josh Lodolo accepted a new position at the University of Texas at Austin as the associate director of development for the College of Liberal Arts.

California-Los Angeles (Epsilon-Sigma) In conjunction with the

Educational Foundation, the Epsilon-Sigma Alumni Scholarship Committee has awarded the A. Barry Cappello scholarship for 2010-11. All 10 candidates had excellent applications and it was the Alumni Scholarship Committee’s honor and pleasure to review all of them. The Epsilon-Sigma chapter is blessed to have such a generous and kind alumni brother in A. Barry Cappello (1962) who has made these scholarships possible. He has enjoyed a successful career as

an attorney and now has given so much back to our Fraternity and the university. This year’s recipients are: Erik Anderson, Joel Carlos, Scott Lipman, Kyle Nguyen, and Chris Walker.

Central Florida (Beta-Eta)Former chapter officers William Peppler (1992), John Mahony (1993), and Mark S. Moore are business partners in the staffing firm Kavaliro, which recently acquired the Orlando and Charlotte offices of Skillstorm. Derived

from Esperanto, the international language of collective harmony and mutual understanding, the term Kavaliro means “knight,” and it pays homage to the institution that brought the friends and partners together, the University of Central Florida.

Dallas/Ft Worth Area Alumni Association The Dallas/Ft Worth Area Alumni Association held its first

alumni receptions in Forth Worth on August 16, 2010, at Fuzzy Tacos. The association’s golf tournament will be held on October 8, 2010, at the Bridlewood Golf Course in Flower Mound, Texas. Contact Matt Newton to register.

Denver (Alpha-Pi) Mike Koenig, a partner in Studio Shed LLC, was featured in

the July 9th edition of the Denver Business Journal. Based in Boulder, Colorado, the company has come up with a new twist on an old standby: the backyard storage shed.

Drexel (Epsilon-Kappa) Chapter brothers actively participated in Freshman Orientation

events to spark interest in Lambda Chi Alpha for fall recruitment.

Alumni brothers helped the chapter brothers by finalizing the lease agreement with Drexel University. Alumni brothers also hired a contractor to give the interior of the chapter house a fresh coat of paint in preparation for the upcoming parents’ tour. The undergraduate brothers are deeply thankful for all the help and time given by the alumni brothers, and a dinner with them to celebrate our return to campus is being planned for the fall.

Drury (Theta-Sigma) Ben A. Parnell Jr. died August 2, 2010. A former staff

member, he was an influential local banker who lobbied for construction of Table Rock Dam and made the first loan to Silver Dollar City. Parnell was best known for his illustrious banking career in Branson and Springfield, Missouri, and for his visionary contributions to the early development of Branson. A World War II veteran, he was the 1996 Springfieldian of the Year and the recipient of the 2002 Missourian Award.

Eureka (Theta-Chi) Bruce Darnall (1966) and Mark Darnall (2009) have written

an article entitled, “A Quiet Way,” on Chicago White Sox relief pitcher Scott Linebrink. The article was published by Athletes In Action, the sports ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ. The article tells the story of Linebrink’s journey to the Major Leagues and of his Christian faith.

Florida Southern (Epsilon-Xi) On July 22, 2010, Nathan Voldness became an honorary

initiate during the Ritual Exemplification held at the 53rd General Assembly & Leadership Seminar held in Phoenix.

Georgetown (Kappa-Omega) About 70 brothers participated in the annual golf tournement

held on June 5, 2010. The winning team was comprised of undergraduate brothers: Richard Schrade, Dave Owen, Scott Geary, and Matt Coonrod. A last place award went to alumni brothers David Schwartz and Chris Morris, and undergrad brothers Jonathon Kemp and Michael Kemp (sons of alumni brother Sam Kemp). Special thanks for volunteering go to students and Lambda Chi Alpha friends: Sadie Schureck (daughter of brother John Schureck), Ashley Jameson (daughter of brother Kevin Jameson), and Lauren Troxler (chapter’s current Crescent Girl).

Tommy Bryant died June 3, 2010.

Georgia (Nu) Col. Dan M. Hicky died July 5, 2010. A World War II veteran

and retired from the U.S. Air Force, he was awarded the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Distinguished Service Medal, and the Legion of Merit. After his military service, Hicky returned to Madison in 1972 and worked in public relations for the Holiday Inn hotel chain for several years, while he and his wife organized and ran Regal Tours of Madison. He was very active in Madison over

the years serving as president of the Morgan County Chamber of Commerce, the Morgan County Historical Society, and the Madison Boxwood Garden Club. For many years Hicky wrote a weekly column for the Madisonian newspaper and later the Morgan County Citizen newspaper, writing up to the last days of his life. He also wrote two books of poetry, “That I May Fly” and “Madisonian’s I Have Known.”

Georgia Tech (Beta-Kappa) Larry M. Broadfoot died June 17, 2010.

Charles LeCroy died March 10, 2010.

Gettysburg (Theta-Pi) On July 22, 2010, Michael Cole became an honorary

initiate during the Ritual Exemplification held at the 53rd General Assembly & Leadership Seminar held in Phoenix.

Hampden-Sydney (Kappa-Eta) Pitcher Johnny West was named to second team of the

2010 NIC All-Fraternity All-American Baseball Team.

High Point (Iota-Phi) In October 2010, Doug Silk will be competing in a charity

bike ride in Austin, Texas, for the Livestrong Foundation.

Houston Area Alumni Association On

July 29, 2010, 18 alumni brothers and guests from the Houston Area Alumni Association celebrated a Night at the

Races at Gulf Greyhound Park. The ninth race of the evening was the Lambda Chi Alpha Feature Race, and a select group of brothers and their guests met “Smoo’s Good Luck,” a male Brindle, wearing lucky No. 1, in the Winner’s Circle.

Iowa State (Alpha-Tau) On July 10, 2010, Stanly Warren, was invested with the Legion

of Honor degree by the Order of DeMolay at the Oklahoma State DeMolay Conclave in Stillwater, Oklahoma. DeMolay is an organization dedicated to preparing young men of the ages 12-21 to lead successful, happy, and productive lives. The Active Legion of Honor is granted to those Senior DeMolays who have provided outstanding leadership in their field of endeavor or in the Order of DeMolay. Warren became an initiated member of Lambda Chi Alpha on March 10, 1957, and graduated from Iowa State University in 1960. He is a very strong supporter of the chapter, the Alumni Association, and Iowa State University.

Kansas (Zeta-Iota) Alumni Weekend begins October

22, 2010, with a dinner at the Ritz Charles in Overland Park, Kansas. On October 23, 2010, the chapter will host a tailgate on the hill. The tent will be open two hours before the game and last until one hour after the game. Reservations recommended but walk-ups will be welcome as well. Former chapter officer Jay Kenyon (1994) opened the law firm Yan Kenyon on July 1, 2010. Yan Kenyon is a Las Vegas law firm dedicated to helping individuals and small businesses. Kenyon’s practice focuses exclusively on plaintiffs’ personal injury claims and litigation.

Kentucky (Epsilon-Phi) As a part of the 1960 U.S. Gold Medal winning basketball

team, Adrian Smith was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. In addition to winning the gold medal, Smith played on Kentucky’s 1958 NCAA championship team.

Maine (Beta) After well over a decade of needing a new foundation for their chapter house, the brothers have made it a reality. Under the leadership of alumni House Corporation President Tom Perkins,

the brothers worked to find a way to bring the house back up to code. Impressed by the strength of the undergraduate chapter brothers and the tireless dedication of Perkins, many alumni brothers returned to lend their talents to organizing, raising funds, and recruiting even more alumni brothers to help their cause. When nearly 100 guests arrived for the Founder’s Day celebration last March, the brothers knew they were on track. As of mid-July, contractors were in the process of replacing nearly half of the house foundation and installing drainage around the building. There are still a number of projects remaining, including the highest priority projects of replacing the current roof and rebuilding the front porch, but the brothers remain confident that these projects also will be completed.

Chance O. Nalley was named a Teacher of Honor by Kappa Delta Pi, International Honor Society in Education. He is a master teacher and a mathematics instructor at the Columbia Secondary School for Mathematics, Science, & Engineering (CSS-MSE) in New York City. As the 19th recipient of the award this year, Nalley joins a small group of remarkable educators who have been recognized with this honor.

Maryland (Epsilon-Pi) Master Steward Jon Williamson, former executive director of the

North-American Interfraternity Conference, was given the Ralph D. Daniel Award for Interfraternal Excellence at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity convention held in Orlando. During his eight

years as the leader of the NIC, Williamson led many significant initiatives, including the adoption and implementation of the NIC Standards and the beginning of the Coalition Assessment

Project. Due to his leadership, the NIC was able to enjoy many successes which included growing the NIC membership to its largest in their 100 year history, strategically lobbying on the Hill in Washington D.C. to voice Greek organization issues, and streamlining the general operations of the NIC office.

Memphis (Zeta-Theta) F. Scott Smith died June 4, 2010.

Mercer (Zeta-Omega) U.S. Army Maj. Mike McGregor (1993) was promoted to

lieutenant colonel on July 29, 2010, during a ceremony held in the courtyard of the Pentagon, Washington D.C.

Lt. Col. Michael McGregor is currently serving as joint management officer, General Officer Management, the Pentagon.

Miami-FL (Epsilon-Omega) Validity Screening Solutions President and CEO Darren

Dupriest (1991) was honored for the second time in a span of three months by Ingram’s, Kansas City’s Business Magazine. Validity’s most recent recognition is a listing on Ingram’s Corporate Report 100. Founded in 1992, the company is an industry pioneer and national provider of employment screening, drug screening, and assessment testing and continues to remain on the cutting-edge of technology.

Michigan (Sigma) Following the address to

the graduates by President Barack Obama at Michigan Stadium, the graduates from the College of Engineering heard from the chapter’s own Bob Kidder (1967). Roughly 1,000 from the class of 2010 attended the ceremony, including chapter graduates Anthony Budzinski, Stephan Boettcher and Brian Hicks. Brother Kidder, the current chairman of Chrysler, spoke about his life experiences and his pursuit of happiness. Kidder is a 2008 recipient of the Order of Achievement. The

2010 graduates of the chapter would like to thank Kidder for his presence and his speech at their memorable graduation.

Vince R. McLean (1953) died September 7, 2009. He worked for Ford Motor Co. before serving for two years in the U.S. Army. He then took his career to the East Coast, resided in New Jersey, and forged a career in finance, culminating in his becoming executive vice president and chief finance officer of the Sperry Corp. McLean was a loyal member of the chapter, attending many alumni reunions and football weekends in Ann Arbor, Michigan. From 1977 to 1988 he served as a member of the General Fraternity’s Board of Investment Advisers, which was responsible for the management of a $2.5 million investment portfolio, and completed his service as chairman from 1988 to 1991.

Montana State (Epsilon-Delta) James D. Gannaway (1933) died June 28, 2010. An interesting

twist in the chapter history occurred in 1933, when the chapter merged with the Amigo Fraternity and 19 men were initiated. In addition, the chapter moved into the former Amigo Fraternity chapter house. Gannaway was one of the Amigo brothers, president of the Associated Students. The chapter’s House Corporation was named Amigo in their honor.

Montevallo (Sigma-Epsilon) Leland B. Arnold Jr. died August 8, 2010.

Nevada-Reno (Epsilon-Iota) Kurt Herzog, president & CEO

of Acutherm, Inc., a Hayward, California-based company that designs, manufactures, and distributes a line of modular variable air volume (VAV) systems and thermally powered VAV diffusers for use in HVAC systems, was one of 10 California business owners invited by Farmers Insurance Group to a private meeting with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. The event was a one-hour, roundtable discussion that focused

primarily on world economics and the political will to address the current issues associated with governmental deficit spending.

New Hampshire (Alpha-Xi) Jeff Johnston, a principal at a Boston real estate investment

company, helped rescue tenants in a two-alarm fire in a 4-story, 10-unit apartment building in Boston.

Michael Daly (1990) is the eighth head coach in the 34-year history of the UNH women’s lacrosse program. He has returned for a second coaching stint at his alma mater. Daly initially joined the program as an assistant coach in July 2007, and remained as the primary assistant until September 2008.

Oregon State (Alpha-Lambda) On July 22, 2010, Jeffrey Lofgren became an honorary initiated

brother during the Ritual Exemplification held at the 53rd General Assembly & Leadership Seminar held in Phoenix.

Ron Susa and Tod Perkins were featured as 2010 College of Business Alumni & Business Partners Awards for their contributions as professionals in the workforce in partnership with Oregon State University.

Pittsburg State (Lambda-Chi) The brotherhood is building an addition to the six-year-

old house to accommodate expansion due to the growth and the outstanding work of the chapter brothers. Tom Roche is once again sponsoring the building. Tom Roche Jr., son of the elder Roche, is the new chapter president.

The chapter has a new website.

Dan Hauser, who has given his time and effort with the

World War II Air Wing has been awarded by his fellow members to be given a free flight in a P-51 Mustang. This is a dream come true for him. It is especially so since he had his picture taken with two of the original Tuskegee Airmen at one of the last fly-in’s to the Kansas City area.

Larry Randolph, has returned to New Mexico and its art community. While in Taos, New Mexico, he was the artist in charge of his studio, The White Crane Studio. He has come to Santa Fe, New Mexico and, while working for some other studios, is working to reopen his own. Some of the famous people he has worked with are: Dennis Hopper, Whoopi Goldberg, Kevin Costner, Fritz Shoulder and R.C. Gorman. He is also known as the painter of the Beta Chi coat of arms and the original Lambda Chi Alpha coat of arms that is still being used in our Ritual and hangs in the chapter house.

Jeremiah Hull, upon return from his tour of Afghanistan, will report to The Command and Staff College in Levenworth, Kansas, for further training to proceed up the ladder for promotion. He will be working with retired Col. Steve Pierce along with Lonnie Nelson.

Polytechnic (Theta-Upsilon) Alumni brothers will hold their 5th biannual reunion, October

7-11, 2010, at the Hyatt Regendy Hotel in Philadelphia. Many events are planned, including a golf outing, tours of the city, a river cruise, and a banquet on Saturday evening. Contact Bob Schwab at [email protected] with any questions.

Sam Houston (Sigma-Mu) On August 23-24, 2010, Educational Foundation Board

member Charles W. Jones III (1981) participated in the Leaders to Sea program aboard the Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyer USS Mitscher (DDG-57). The experience gave Jones an opportunity to have a rare firsthand look at life aboard a U.S. Navy destroyer. The purpose of this program is to increase the public’s understanding of the Navy through direct interaction with its sailors.

San Antonio Area Alumni Association The San Antonio Area Alumni Association will be hosting the

Shepherd (Phi-Iota) Trevor J. Morin gave the commencement address at University

of Massachusetts Medical School for the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Born with a hole in his heart, Morin had three open-heart surgeries by age 18. Mr. Morin told the graduates that he fought hard to resume a career as a professional jockey after the third surgery. His dream ended one day when a horse threw him and causing both of his wrists to shatter. After his life sank into a dark world that spun out of control, he turned his life around and entered the University of Massachusetts at Boston. He then came to the medical school, where he received a doctor of philosophy degree from the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

Steubenville (Lambda-Sigma) Father Ronan John Deegan (1951) died July 5, 2010. He served

in the U.S. Navy from 1945-48 as a communications supervisor and telegrapher. He was one of four charter members and the president of the chapter. Father Ronan served on the faculties and administrative staffs at Bishop Egan High School, Fairless Hills; St. Francis Preparatory School, Spring Grove; Franciscan University of Steubenville, Steubenville, Ohio; and St. Francis University, Loretto. At St. Francis Prep, in addition to his responsibilities as a faculty member, he served as headmaster of the school from 1984-88. Among other positions of leadership, Father Ronan served on the boards of trustees of St. Francis Prep, Franciscan University and, from 1996-2006, at St. Francis University. In 2008, to recognize his distinguished service to the church, Franciscan University of Steubenville honored him with a doctorate of humane letters. He served the province first as assistant director of vocations and then as director of Franciscan candidates at St. Francis Preparatory School and later as director of novices at Sacred Heart Friary, Winchester, Va. He also became religious superior of the former Mount Assisi Friary, Loretto, in 1972 and of St. Anthony Friary, Fairless Hills, in 1975. While residing in Winchester, the priests of the Diocese of Richmond elected him to the diocesan Council of Priests. Father Ronan also was engaged in parish ministry by serving as pastor of St. Agnes Church, Pittsburgh, from 1976-84 and parochial vicar of St. Gabriel Church, Marlboro, N.J., from 1988-91. In 1991, he was named pastor of St. Francis Xavier Church, Moundsville, W.Va., in the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, and served in that capacity until he was assigned to St. Francis Friary, Loretto, in 2009.

South Carolina (Epsilon-Psi) Philip S. Calvo died July 9, 2010. He was instrumental

in the construction of the chapter house.

Southeast Missouri (Delta-Phi) In July 2010, the brothers held the second annual alumni

baseball game. Actives, alumni, and even potential new members went to a minor league baseball game and shared stories about where they were with their lives and what Lambda Chi Alpha has done for them.

Aaron Wright received the 2010 First Year Teacher of the Year Award in the St. Charles, Missouri school district.

Southeastern Oklahoma (Pi-Sigma) On July 22, 2010, Colton Feroli served as the undergraduate

candidate during the Ritual Exemplification held at the 53rd General Assembly & Leadership Seminar held in Phoenix.

Texas-San Antonio (Phi-Upsilon) On June 22, 2010, Rob Killen (1997) received the

San Antonio North Chamber of Commerce Young Professional Award for Professional Leadership.

Wabash (Alpha-Kappa)

Outfielder Montana Timmons was named second team for the 2010 NIC All-Fraternity All-American Baseball Team. Catcher P.J. Tyson and Brian Lares were named as honorable mentions.

William & Mary (Epsilon-Alpha) The chapter named three additional alumni brothers to its

Lambda Chi Alpha-College of William and Mary Alumni Hall of Honor. Ronald J. Monark served as sophomore class president and was initiated into Phi Beta Kappa during his college days. Suring his career he has served as either COO or CEO for Mitchell International, ATE Enterprises, and KLM, has been chair of the William and Mary Endowment Association, and a chair of the Smithsonian Libraries. Dennis F. Thompson also was a member of Phi Beta Kappa during his college days and was the founding director of the Harvard University Center for Ethics. He has served as the associate provost and senior adviser to the president of Harvard University. Thompson has also served as the vice chair of the Board of Trustees at Smith College. Charles E. Rawley has served as president and COO of Kentucky Fried Chicken and chief development officer of its parent company, Yum Brands. Editor’s Note: Outgoing Grand High Alpha Dr. Edward F. Leonard III (William Jewell) gave the following speech on July 22, 2010, during the first day of the 53rd General Assembly at the Biltmore Hotel in Phoenix.

Last week, while working on my State of the Fraternity, I learned of the passing of Epsilon-Nu 185, Order of Merit recipient Richard Harriman. I would like to dedicate this State of the Fraternity address to Richard, who is my hero and inspiration for lifetime brotherhood. Richard served Epsilon-Nu Zeta at William Jewell College as High Pi from 1964 to 2008, 45 and a half years.

Brothers, for the last four years I have been humbled and honored to serve as the 22nd Grand High Alpha. Four years ago I stood before the General Assembly and shared my excitement in our shared future and in working with Bill Farkas. I knew these four years would be “Bill & Ed’s Excellent Adventure.” I stand

before you today to say unequivocally that the last four years have been an excellent adventure. Today the state of Lambda Chi Alpha is strong and we are getting stronger. I stand before you to proclaim, “It’s a great day to be a Lambda Chi!”

Last Saturday I had the privilege, as president of Bethany College, to attend the induction ceremony of the College Football Hall of Fame where, for the second time, a former Bethany College football coach was enshrined. During the ceremony, I was reminded of the great St. Louis Cardinals pitcher, Dizzy Dean, and his famous saying, “If you’ve done it, it ain’t bragging.” Four years ago I shared my five goals for Lambda Chi Alpha during my term. This afternoon I’d like to brag about what we’ve done and present my report card on how I believe we did. To mark the progress that we have made, let me compare where we are in 2010 with where we were in 2005, the year before I was elected Grand High Alpha. But first, let me set the context for

2010 State of the Fraternity

Lambda Chi Alpha in 2005. For the 15 years leading up to 2005, Lambda Chi Alpha had seen a significant decline in membership, finances and morale. From 1990 to 2005, Lambda Chi Alpha had only two “up” years in associations, and one of those was 2005. In 2005 we had turned the corner after five years of a financial freefall that saw a $1.2 million deficit on a $3 million budget in 2002. In the years leading up to 2005 I can say with certainty (because I was there), we were demoralized and many wondered what we would look like at our Centennial in 2009. Some even questioned quietly if, in 2009, we would celebrate our Centennial or eulogize our passing. With that as context, let me now share my 2006 goals and how we’ve done. Because if we’ve done it, it ain’t bragging.

First GoalMy first goal was for each brother to become comfortable with what our brotherhood is and the Core Values upon which our brotherhood is built. In 2005, we had just experienced two unsuccessful attempts to re-imagine fraternity education. In 2006, conceived in New Braunfels, Texas, and born in Denver, Colorado, a group of brothers imagined for Lambda Chi Alpha something totally new and innovative for the Greek letter world. To build a stronger brotherhood and establish core values upon which our brotherhood could be built, True Brother was developed and introduced at the Memphis Leadership Seminar in 2007. Today the True Brother Initiative has

reshaped Lambda Chi Alpha and unified all of our programming into a coherent package. Over the last three years our commitment to True Brother has yielded:

New manuals for every High Zeta officerOuter Circle programming delivered through Cole RecruitmentCall to Brotherhood, and our Exoteric MysteriesInner Circle Programming delivered through stewardship, leadership, character, and brotherhoodMastery Circle programming delivered through a multi-level adviser’s college and the Master Stewards programTrue Leader -- three levels developed, available, and presented to chapters...and a fourth level being developedTrue ID -– Four modules exploring race and culture, faith and spirituality, gender issues, and sexual orientationTrue Health -– a series of online resources

Second GoalMy second goal was to teach each brother how to share and talk about brotherhood in the first person, rather than as a product. Without a doubt, True Brother is delivering on this goal as associations are up for the sixth year in a row. This has not happened in Lambda Chi Alpha for almost 40 years, since the early to mid-seventies. In fact, we associated 500 more men this past year than we did in 2005. Additionally, over the last five years our average chapter size has grown

from 40 to 52, a 30 percent increase. I would suggest this growth is happening because of our brothers. You all are learning to share and talk about brotherhood. That’s a good thing.

Third GoalMy third goal was to equip and challenge each brother to demonstrate in his life what we profess in our rituals. Over the last five years our efforts to equip and challenge have seen impressive growth as well. In 2005, we can document that 609 student brothers participated in official Fraternity-sponsored educational programs. In 2010, we can document that 11,753 student brothers participated in official Fraternity-sponsored educational programs. Furthermore, our

primary educational program to equip and challenge is our chapter visitation program. In 2005, we struggled to visit every chapter every semester. By 2010, every chapter received at least one, three-day visit each semester with additional time and attention provided where needed and where requested. Chapter Services is there to serve and challenge and they are delivering on that promise.

Fourth GoalMy fourth goal was to secure sufficient alumni, staff, financial, information, and technology resources to continually strengthen our bond of brotherhood and support our chapters and brothers. This goal establishes the foundation upon which everything is built. In 2005, this foundation was not on firm ground. In 2010, our foundation is incredibly strong, and getting stronger. Our alumni resources are, in my opinion, the strongest Lambda Chi Alpha has ever seen. In 2005, 57 percent of our chapters had a High Pi. In 2010, 95 percent of our chapters have a High Pi. As I mentioned earlier to support the critically important role our High Pis have in chapter life, since 2005 we have developed and launched a three-level adviser’s college. Today, all High Pis and alumni who engage our chapters are required to participate in a certification process including background checks and statements of affirmation of service to our Fraternity.

Additionally, True Brother has introduced the Master Stewards program where today we have more than 50 active Master Stewards. Of course in 2005, there were none. The growth in our financial resources has been just as remarkable. In 2005, our cash on hand was $47,713, which represented five days of operating expenses. In 2010, our cash on hand was $766,402 which represents 69 days of operating expenses. In 2005, our total assets were $3.5 million and today they total $4.2 million. Lastly, our total

net balance, our net worth, was under $1 million in 2005. Today, it is almost $2.4 million. Finally, our technology resources have grown as well over the last five years with a new website, an interactive feature to that website, a new internal database management software package, and web-based town halls for chapter officers.

Fifth GoalMy fifth and final goal was Lambda Chi Alpha reclaiming our place as the Greek letter world’s preeminent leader. Over

the last three years since the launch of True Brother, colleges and universities are once again enamored with Lambda Chi Alpha. Last January, five college presidents joined the Grand High Zeta to help us envision the future of Lambda Chi Alpha as co-curricular partners. Then in March, Lambda Chi Alpha made two presentations each to the annual conferences of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and the American College Personnel Association, a first for a fraternity.

Earlier I mentioned last Saturday’s enshrinement ceremony for the College Football Hall of Fame. Another recurring message made throughout the evening was that football is a team sport. Of course, those of us who are leaders within Lambda Chi Alpha, we also know that fraternity is a team sport. The success Lambda Chi Alpha has experienced over the last five years is without a doubt the result of hard work and passion of many brothers and friends. I cannot thank them enough for what they have done. While I do not intend to overlook anyone, I would like to acknowledge and

But first, let me offer a special thanks to my family because they support me and my love of Lambda Chi Alpha. Sheila’s support and her own commitment to the Greek letter movement allow me to pursue my passion for Lambda Chi Alpha. For my sons, I continue to dream for a Lambda Chi Alpha that is strong everywhere so they can join anywhere. Sheila, Quaid, Thomas –- I love you very much. Because I believe in the inverted pyramid, let me begin by first thanking those that are on the front lines, blocking and tackling to make Lambda Chi Alpha better each day. If over the last five years you have served on the finest staff in the Greek world, the staff of Lambda Chi Alpha, please stand and let me acknowledge you and let this assembly thank you. Those who I have come to know and

love these last 12 years, but specifically if over the last five years you have served on the True Brother Council, the Student Advisory Committee, the Council of Presidents, Executive Committee, or the Grand High Zeta, please stand and let me acknowledge you and let this assembly thank you. Finally, I chose to compare 2010 to 2005 for a very specific reason. I firmly believe that the road to today’s successes began in 2005 with the hiring of our Executive Vice President, Lambda Chi Alpha’s Chief Executive Officer, Bill Farkas. Please join me in thanking Bill.

In conclusion, I stand before you with all of us having done it and brag again, “It’s a great day to be a Lambda Chi!” These last four years have been a great ride...a magic carpet ride. To paraphrase a song loved by all Lambda Chis (and I’m not going to sing it): “Well, you don’t know what we can find. Why don’t you come with me, true brother, on a magic carpet ride. You don’t know what you can be. Why don’t you tell your dreams to me. Brotherhood will set you free. Close your eyes, bro. Look inside, bro. Let the ritual take you away.”

God bless Lambda Chi Alpha.

New Grand High Alpha

At the conclusion of the 53rd General Assembly, newly-appointed Grand High Alpha James A. “Drew” Hunter (Denver 1980) gave his vision and charge to the delegates and attendees. The following is a portion of Hunter’s acceptance speech to the General Assembly attendees.

“Six years ago, I agreed to run for the Grand High Zeta at the urging of many brothers and was rewarded with the support of the Assembly and became Grand High Kappa. I first ran for the Grand High Zeta because like for so many of us, Lambda Chi Alpha clearly ranks as one of the most important decisions I have ever made in my life and one that I have never regretted for a minute. Doc Dirghalli has said it best many times when he describes Lambda Chi Alpha as nothing more than an idea. An idea that a fraternity really can live up to its goals of helping create better men. An idea that flourishes when we share a common set of values, and when we work hard to truly hold out those values for all to see. In doing so, we attract more men to our bond who want to be part of something special and to make a difference in each others lives. Through Lambda Chi Alpha we become our brothers’ brothers and we are obligated to do our best to challenge ourselves and each other to grow into being the best men and brothers we can be. I am proud that during the last six years, our Fraternity has rediscovered who we are and who we can be. As we say in the Lambda Chi Chant, “It’s Great to Be a Lambda Chi....” Well, I would also add that it is a “Great Time to Be a Lambda Chi.” Right? Today, Lambda Chi Alpha is the talk of the Fraternity world in a good way and the envy of other fraternities. Our True Brother Initiative is years ahead of schedule in both acceptance at the chapter level and in how it has been embraced by our undergraduate brothers and alumni alike. A great accomplishment in a very short period of time.”

At the 53nd General Assembly & Stead Leadership Seminar in Phoenix, one alumni brother was awarded the Order of Achievement: John Quiñones (St. Mary’s).

Quiñones is the Emmy award-winning co-anchor of ABC’s “Primetime” and has been with the network for nearly 25 years. During his tenure he has reported extensively for ABC News, predominantly serving as a correspondent for “Primetime” and “20/20.” Quiñones’ recent work includes a series of reports entitled “What Would You Do?”

He has won seven national Emmy awards for his “Primetime Live,” “Burning Questions” and “20/20” work. Quinones was awarded an Emmy for his coverage of the Congo’s virgin rainforest, which also

won the Ark Trust Wildlife Award, and in 1990 received an Emmy for “Window in the Past,” his look at the Yanomamo Indians.

He received a National Emmy award for his work on the ABC documentary “Burning Questions -- The Poisoning of America,” which aired in September 1988. Quiñones has also been honored with a World Hunger Media Award and a Citation from the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Awards for “To Save the Children,” his 1990 report on the homeless children of Bogota.

Among his other prestigious awards were the First Prize in International Reporting and the Robert F. Kennedy Prize for his piece on “Modern Slavery -- Children Sugar Cane Cutters in the Dominican Republic.”

Nine Order of Merit RecipientsAward recognizes service and outstanding individual and chapter accomplishments.

Each year, Lambda Chi Alpha recognizes alumni dedication to our organization by awarding the Order of Merit to alumni who have continuously given of themselves to the fraternity on a local or international level. This award demonstrates appreciation for service to the Fraternity, and outstanding individual and chapter accomplishments.

While we are very proud to present these awards, we recognize that the greatest reward anyone can receive is derived from hard work and the impact from helping others. As volunteers of Lambda Chi Alpha, our alumni help build a place for friendship and provide great inspiration for our undergraduate brothers.

The Grand High Zeta has the authority to select up to ten men for induction to the Order of Merit at each General Assembly. Before an official selection can be made, the Grand High Zeta carefully studies the fraternal service and character record of the proposed nominees. Those granted the honor are inducted, either at a General Assembly or at another special ceremony. Considered Lambda Chi Alpha’s greatest distinction for volunteer service, the Order of Merit has been conferred upon only 314 individuals out of more than 275,000 initiated members.

This year the Grand High Zeta has elected nine new members.

John Bloom (Miami-OH)Today Brother Bloom serves the chapter as a member of the Alumni Advisory Board; vice president of the House Corporation, and has been a long-time member of the Alumni Association, serving as presi-dent, vice president and editor of the alumni newsletter – and he has been co-chair of the Zeta-Upsilon capital campaign. In his nomination letter, Order of Merit recipient and chapter brother Mike Raymond (Miami-OH) said of Bloom, “What stands out above all of his involvement is his dedication to our Fraternity. John is unassuming, hard working, dependable, and committed to his brothers. He is the quiet man who gets the job done without the expectation of reward or the fear of failure.”

Ed Keglovits (Kutztown)Brother Keglovits has served Sigma-Gamma as the High Pi since 1991. He also is a member of the Advisory Board, House Corpora-tion, and Alumni Association. Former High Alpha Garret Kuhns summed up Keglovits’ qualifications by saying, “The Order of Merit will do nothing but greatly improve Ed’s involvement, commitment and, most of all, add to the love he has for Lambda Chi Alpha. He truly bleeds purple, green and gold.”

Tom Larson (California-Los Angeles)In addition to serving the Fraternity at an international level, brother Larson has served his chapter as a House Corporation president and director, and as the chapter’s financial adviser. In submitting brother Larson’s name for this honor, current House Corp President Tom Fagen wrote, “It is individuals like Brother Tom Larson who truly make a difference by assisting our brotherhood in maintaining its high standards and record of achievement through the continuing evolution of Greek life on our nation’s campuses, both in good times and bad times.”

Gene Laughrey (Kansas State)Brother Laughrey has served his chapter as High Pi and, for the past 25 years, as the House Corporation president. Fellow chapter brother Todd Briggeman wrote in his recommendation letter, “I honestly believe that the Order of Merit award was conceived with the purpose of honoring men like Gene Laughrey for the consistently selfless gift of their time, resources, and efforts in making Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity what it is today.”.”

Mike Mahoney (Eastern Illinois)Brother Mahoney served his chapter as a member of the House Corporation and Alumni Association for more than 20 years. In addition, Mike is a very talented artist and has created many pieces of Lambda Chi Alpha artwork, which have significantly impacted his zeta and our entire brotherhood. In his letter of recommendation, Order of Merit recipient John Schmitt wrote, “Mike has tirelessly served Phi-Alpha Zeta. One of the most outstanding labors of love for Phi-Alpha Zeta was his production of a 30-minute professional multimedia video presentation that documented the 30-year history of the zeta....The creation of this presentation was a two-year labor that took hundreds of hours to single-handedly produce.”

Michael Malter (Widener)Brother Malter has served his chapter as High Pi and vice president of the House Corporation. In addition, Malter serves as the High Pi for the Beta-Iota chapter at Villanova University, which was re-chartered last spring. Of this milestone, brother Randy Rossi wrote in his recommendation letter, “The success of this recolonization is due in large part to brother Malter’s unceasing efforts to educate the new brothers in the ideals of Lambda Chi Alpha, as well as helping the actives deal with the many situations that routinely occur in college life today.”

Dr. H. Coleman McGinnis (Sewanee)Brother McGinnis is a chapter founder and has served Lambda Chi Alpha for more than 45 years as a key leader and officer of the original colony, active chapter, and House Corporation. Current House Corporation President Brad Peabody wrote in his recommendation letter, “The success of any chapter, especially one on a small college campus with many fraternities, takes alumni who are passionate about Lambda Chi Alpha and are willing to generously donate their time, talent, and treasure to preserve the bond of brotherhood. Coley McGinnis has done that for our chapter over all these years. His example and leadership have helped us to weather many storms and he has inspired countless brothers.”

Chester McKinney (Auburn)Brother McKinney has been very active with Lambda Chi Alpha for more than 20 years, including serving as the chapter’s chairman for both the House Corporation and Alumni Association, in addition to serving as the national campaign chairman for the chapter’s very successful 2002 fundraising campaign.

Michael Morganti (Rensselaer Polytechnic)Brother Morganti has served the past 20 years variously as a member of his chapter’s Alumni Advisory Board, House Corporation, and Alumni Association. In his recommendation letter, current Epsilon-Eta High Pi and Order of Merit recipient Roger Grice wrote, “Mike goes above and beyond what could be expected of an alumnus and of a House Corporation officer, and he does all that he does with grace, good cheer, and a strong sense of brotherhood and fellowship. It is always hoped that alumni will serve as good role models and mentors for the undergraduates. Mike certainly does that; but he also serves as a role model and mentor of the alumni who work with the chapter.”

Grand High ZetaThe Grand High Zeta serves as the Board of Directors for Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. It consists of nine members elected by the General Assembly to fill alternating four-year terms; one or two alumni members appointed by the Grand High Zeta to fill two-year terms; the chairman and vice chairman of the Student Advisory Committee to serve one-year terms as Grand High Sigma and Grand High Theta respectively; and the chairman and vice chairman of the Council of Presidents to serve one-year terms as Grand High Nu and Grand High Psi respectively.

James A. “Drew” Hunter (Denver 1980) Grand High AlphaSince 1987, Hunter has served as the president/CEO of The BACCHUS and GAMMA Peer Education Network. He is the convener/chairman of the Inter-Association Task Force on Campus Alcohol and Other Substance Abuse Issues; and board treasurer for the National Organizations for Youth Safety.

Dr. Gregory E. Smith (Washington 1962) Grand High BetaSmith was appointed as professor at the University of Florida College of Dentistry in 1979 and served there until his retirement in 2007. He also served as chairman of the Department of Operative Dentistry from 1979-1983 and again from 1990-1998. In addition, he has served on the dental faculty at the University of Washington and at the University of Colorado.

Robert A. Koch (California-Berkeley 1971) Grand High GammaSince 2008, Koch has served as vice president of asset and portfolio for Fullerton Community Bank in Orange County, California. He was previously the senior vice president and chief credit officer for Desert Commercial Bank in Palm Desert, California. He also is past president for Contra Costa County’s Easter Seal Society and immediate past chairman of the California Bankers Association, Lenders Conference Committee. In addition, Koch received Purple Heart Award, 1969.

Gregg D. Behrens (Iowa State 1974)Grand High TauIn 2009, Behrens retired after 35 years at Northern Trust Corp. Named Northern Trust’s first CEO of the Asia-Pacific region in 2007, he established a regional management structure across all business functions, including asset servicing, asset management and operations. His prior executive roles included serving as head of Corporate & Institutional Services in North America, head of asset servicing in Europe, Middle East, and Africa, and head of national services for the Personal Financial Services business unit.

M. Fletcher McElreath (Mercer 1987) Grand High PiMcElreath is a partner with Alston & Bird LLP in their New York City office. His practice focuses on debt and equity securities offerings, public and private mergers, and acquisitions activities. He is a co-leader of the Financial Services Practice Group.

Dr. Elgan L. Baker Jr. (DePauw 1971) Grand High KappaBaker is co-founder and president of Indianapolis-based Meridian Psychological Associates, PC., and clinical associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine. He is a clinical diplomate (ABPH) and a fellow of the American Psychological Association and the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. He is also a diplomate in Forensic Psychology (ABPS) and in Psychoanalysis as a founding fellow of the American College of Advanced Practice Psychologists.

Rodger M. Lalli (Oklahoma HON) Grand High DeltaLalli is vice president and COO of Steve Owens Insurance Group, an Oklahoma-based insurance agency. He is responsible for all operations, including sales, budgets, and human resources. During his stewardship, the company has experienced a 77 percent increase in sales, a profit margin increase from 12 percent to 31 percent, and a customer retention increase from 81 percent to 96 percent.

Dr. Michael J. Raymond (Miami-OH 1967), Grand High PhiRaymond is the superintendent/CEO of the College Corner Local School District in Ohio. Previously, he was Preble County superintendent of schools, providing leadership in a multi-local and city school environment that served more than 7,000 students in six school districts and with a staff of 95 employees. Their specialty was educating handicapped students.

Educational Foundation BoardJerre L. Stead (Iowa 1965) was appointed the new chairman of the Lambda Chi Alpha Educational Foundation during the 53nd General Assembly held in Phoenix. Professionally, Stead is the executive chairman and CEO of Englewood, Colorado,-based IHS Inc., one of the leading global providers of critical technical information, decision-support tools, and related services. He became executive chairman of IHS Inc. December 1, 2000, after retiring from Ingram Micro in May 2000, where he served as chairman and CEO. Jerre assumed the additional role of CEO for IHS Inc. on September 20, 2006. upon Stead’s appointment, Lambda Chi Alpha would also like to recognize H. Dean Sellers (Florida State 1966) for his tremendous service as the previous board chairman. Since 2006, Sellers has been an important member of the board, serving as treasurer before being elected chairman in July 2008.

Student Advisory Committee

The Student Advisory Committee (SAC) discusses topics facing the Fraternity and often develops legislation to be submitted to the General Assembly. Furthermore, SAC provides the Grand High Zeta with the undergraduate perspective, concerns, and opinions that are an inherent part of the Fraternity’s decision-making process. Each SAC member is responsible for maintaining regular contact with the chapters in his regional conclave and keeping them informed about General Fraternity developments.

Twenty-nine chapters were notified to attend a status meeting at the 53rd General Assembly.

Status of Chapters Committee Recaps

Status 1California-Los Angeles (Epsilon-Sigma Colony)After a successful meeting with the committee, the colony was given a few goals to accomplish during the 2010-2011 semester. The colony, with support from the General Fraternity, needs to spend extra time working with its pre-Initiation and Initiation programs, increase relations with surrounding chapters, and further develop its education program.

California-Santa Barbara (Zeta-Eta Colony)During previous semesters the colony seemed to be struggling with Initiation, therefore the committee recommended the following changes: the colony needs to establish a standardized Initiation schedule; create an alumni advisory board, with the High Pi serving as one member, and consisting of no less than seven alumni brothers from other chapters; have the ceremony memorized for future Initiations; and initiate all of its associate members as prescribed by the chapter’s education program.

Florida State (Zeta-Rho)The chapter had a difficult semester and came into the committee meeting receptive to changes. After discussions with the committee, and after showing the completion of a number of its probation terms through the spring semester, the chapter was lowered to Stage 1 probation. In order to provide more support for the chapter the committee recommended that an Alumni Advisory Board be formed, containing no less than seven men and with no more than three alumni from Zeta-Rho. Additionally, a staff member will attend to help plan the chapter’s calendar at its upcoming High Zeta retreat.

South Carolina (Epsilon-Psi)The chapter has been struggling this past semester but is looking to take strides to establish itself as a successful chapter in the upcoming academic year. The committee recommended that a social contract be formed and signed by the brotherhood to help with accountability; that it implement an Alumni Advisory Board with at least three active members; mandated that the High Pi attend Neville Advisers College in January of 2011; and recommended that it receive a presentation by a member of the General Fraternity staff that will outline accountability and chapter operations.

Southern California (Zeta-Delta)The chapter has been working hard through its probation terms this past semester, leaving only one term to complete. After meeting with the committee, it was recommended that the chapter complete the final term but retain the Alumni Control Board until the Summer of 2011 and until removed from probation. Additionally, more men from the chapter will attend both the regional conclave and international conferences, and the chapter will need to continue to implement its Lambda Chi Alpha education program.

Status 2Mississippi State (Epsilon-Chi)The chapter has been working extremely hard to complete its probation terms after being placed there at the beginning of the 2009-2010 academic year. The representatives presented well to the Status of Chapters committee, and it was recommended that the chapter be removed from probation. In addition, the chapter will be required to submit monthly reports to the Office of Administration for the fall 2010 semester.

This year at the 53rd General Assembly in Phoenix, 29 chapters were called before the Status of Chapters Committee. These chapters were asked to attend in order to reflect on the past academic year and to find solutions to some potential problems that had arisen. There were four status committees, one of which dealt specifically with chapter finance.

The following are the recommendations for these chapters from the General Assembly.


FRATERNITY NEWS

North Dakota (Epsilon-Zeta)The chapter has been making progress with its probation terms during the 2009-2010 academic semesters. Although struggling with young leadership and communication difficulties, the chapter officers are determined to turn the chapter around. The committee recommended that the chapter be reduced from Stage 2 to Stage 1 probation and that it complete all terms outlined in its probation document. Additionally, the chapter will receive a supplementary visit from a Master Steward to assist with chapter operations.

Northern Michigan (Lambda-Upsilon)The chapter has been on probation for 979 consecutive days, and the brothers are looking to return to active status after the completion of the final probation terms. The Status of Chapters committee, recognizing their need for change, recommended that the Alumni Control Board conduct a selective membership review by October 1, 2010. In addition, the chapter must hold monthly meetings with the director for student enrichment and be reviewed by the Grand High Zeta for removal from probation in January.

Clemson (Delta-Omicron)The chapter has had a number of incidents during the spring semester which caused the chapter to be placed on Stage 3 probation. Based upon support from the alumni and the efforts made by the chapter, the committee recommended that its status be reduced to Stage 1 probation. Additionally, the chapter house must remain dry for all events, and Event Planning Paperwork must be completed and submitted to the Office of Administration.

Miami–FL (Epsilon-Omega)The chapter has been working hard to complete its terms, although there have been some stumbles in the process. During the committee meeting the chapter brought forth a self-prepared 30-60-90-day plan to help it reach the desired outcome of completing the probation terms. The chapter is hopeful that the probation terms will be completed and the plan implemented on or before November 8, 2010.

Status 3Kentucky (Epsilon-Phi)The chapter has been on a challenging road for a number of semesters but has proven itself this past semester. Under a newly-elected High Zeta, the chapter appears to be working well in moving towards completing its terms. Recognizing progress, the committee recommended the chapter be reassessed at its upcoming chapter retreat by a member of the General Fraternity staff who will determine if lowering of probation

should occur at that time. Additionally, the chapter will have a representative of the General Fraternity at its next Initiation.

Southern Methodist (Gamma-Sigma)The chapter has been through a tough spring semester but has emerged determined and ready for change. After a membership review was conducted in the spring, the chapter came alive by setting the goal of establishing itself with a new identity on campus. The Status Committee recommended that the chapter be removed from probation and, with the support of the General Fraternity staff, develop an education program with proper harm-reduction practices. Additionally, the chapter will be receiving an extended ELC visit, and a follow-up visit during the fall semester, to ensure all needs are met. The Alumni Control Board will also stay in place for added local support.

Tennessee-Knoxville (Epsilon-Omicron)The chapter has been struggling through the last semester but is looking for a more positive outcome in the spring. Based on its presentation during the Status of Chapter Committee meeting, it was determined that the chapter needs more hands-on alumni support. It was recommended that, with the assistance of the General Fraternity staff, the chapter develop and train an Alumni Advisory Board to assist in developing a concrete plan for completing the tasks set forth in its probation terms.

Florida (Epsilon-Mu)The chapter was removed from probation during the Spring 2010 semester, but was asked to appear before the Status of Chapters committee to reflect on its time on probation and to present a plan for the future. After discussion with the committee it was determined that the chapter has a positive outlook for the future and is creating a better atmosphere for change and growth.

Status FinancialIn the fourth Status of Chapters Committee, 15 chapters were called before the committee to discuss financial difficulties. All chapters, either before or during the General Assembly, paid off their balances or agreed to a payment plan to bring their balances down to $0 by the end of the fall 2010 semester. No chapters are currently on Financial Suspension, and the members present were willing to do what was necessary to impact change within their chapter.

At the 53rd General Assembly, chapter delegates and alumni with franchise debated and voted on a wide variety of Constitution and Statutory Code amendments and resolutions. Held in the Grand Ballroom of the Arizona Biltmore, the three days of sessions were led by:

The General Assembly is the chief governing body of the Fraternity. Its membership, with franchise, shall include the following:1. One Official Delegate representing each Chapter, except as

provided in Article III, Sec. 1-c.2. Official Delegates from the Alumni Conference as provided in

Article III, Sec. 3.3. All members of the Grand High Zeta.4. All members of the Board of Councilors.5. All members in the Order of Merit.6. All members of the Student Advisory Committee

The powers and duties of the General Assembly are:1. Effecting its own organization.2. Electing the officers of the General Fraternity.3. Enacting and enforcing laws and rules governing the entire

Fraternity, its Units, or members. Legislation enacted by the General Assembly shall be in force 60 days after passage, unless otherwise provided.

4. Approval or disapproval of all policies and practices of the Fraternity and of its Units or members.

5. Granting of charters.6. Appropriation of the real property and other assets of a

defunct Chapter and its House Corporation, or equivalent thereof, remaining after the payment of all outstanding liabilities of such Unit.

7. Placing on probation or suspending any Unit of the Fraternity, subject in the case of a Chapter to the provisions of Article XI, Sec. 3 of this Constitution.

8. Penalizing any Unit, officer, or member in such manner as may

be deemed necessary, subject in the case of a Chapter to the provisions of Article XI of this Constitution; and as to a member or officer subject to Article X, Sec. 5 of this Constitution.

9. Provision by statute for the creation or disbursement of revenues for the Fraternity.

10. Amendment of the Laws of the Fraternity.11. All other powers necessary for the proper carrying out of the

duties and privileges herein provided for.

The following outcomes reflect the decisions made by the General Assembly.

Bill No. 2Summation: Proposed changes to General Fraternity fees structure

Outcome: Associate Member Fee: Increases in $10.00 increments each year starting October 15, 2010 until October 15, 2012

Initiation Fee: Increases in $10.00 increments each year starting October 15, 2010 until October 15, 2012

Active Dues: Increases in $5.00 increments each year starting October 15, 2010 until October 15, 2012

Basic Chapter Fee: This will remain at $800.00 and colonies will continue to be exempt from the Basic Chapter Fee

Bill No. 4Summation: Proposed changes as to the selection of members of the Student Advisory Committee

Outcome: Student Advisory Committee members will be voted on at each conclave and the Grand High Alpha will make his selection based on the slates provided by each conclave


FRATERNITY NEWS

Bill No. 6Summation: Proposed non-substantive changes concerning the relocation of certain codes to sections of the Constitution and Statutory Code where they would make more logical sense and be easier to locate.

Outcome: Sections regarding Hazing of Associate Members and Initiates, Gambling, unauthorized jewelers, and the penalty for patronizing were relocated.

Bill No. 7Summation: Proposed the removal of “in-active” status in vocabulary regarding removing a chapter from a campus.

Outcome: A chapter that is removed from a particular campus will have their operations suspended and the term “in-active” no longer exists as a term in the Constitution and Statutory Code in regard to chapter discipline.

Bill No. 9Summation: Proposed giving authority to the Committee on Constitution to conduct an in-depth review of the Constitution and Statutory Code and allowing them to effect technical, non-substantive changes to the Constitution and Statutory Code.

Outcome: Authority was granted to the Committee on Constitution.

Bill No. 10Summation: Proposed legislation that would change the amount of years a brother would have to serve on the Grand High Zeta before receiving franchise.

Outcome: An alternative bill was passed that took the maximum or minimum number of alumni delegates out of the Constitution as long as the percentage of undergraduate representation does not change.

Honors & ResolutionsResolution No. 1This resolution defines binge drinking and highlights the dangers associated with this behavior.

Resolution No. 2This resolution extended gratitude to the Arizona Biltmore and their staff for enhancing our 53rd General Assembly with a great facility and friendly staff.

Resolution No. 3This resolution extended gratitude to Lambda Chi Alpha’s volunteers who worked hard to ensure that all attendees had a memorable experience.

Resolution No. 4This Resolution recognized the True Brother Council members and their dedication and hard work in continuing to evolve the positive impact of the Lambda Chi Alpha experience.

Resolution No. 5This Resolution recognized outgoing members of the Student Advisory Committee and Council of Presidents.

Resolution No. 6This resolution recognized Lambda Chi Alpha Properties and the brothers that give their service.

Resolution No. 7This resolution recognized outgoing members of the Grand High Zeta and their service to the Fraternity.

Resolution No. 8This resolution recognized outgoing Grand High Alpha Dr. Edward F. Leonard III for his service to the Fraternity.

Outstanding Undergraduate

Sean Dunn (Tennessee-Chattanooga 2010) was honored with the Cyril F. “Duke” Flad Outstanding Undergraduate Award, the highest honor bestowed upon an undergraduate. Dunn graduated summa cum laude from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga last May with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. While at UTC, Sean enjoyed being involved in a number of different activities on campus, including many leadership roles. After joining Lambda Chi Alpha his freshman year, he quickly developed a passion for the Fraternity and, during his undergraduate experience, served as the chapter treasurer and then as the chapter president. Dunn also participated in IFC, first as the scholarship chairman and then as executive vice president. He also maintained involvement throughout his four undergraduate years in the Pre-Medical Society, serving as treasurer and president; and in the American Chemical Society Student Affiliates Chapter, serving as president his senior year. When he wasn’t studying, Dunn worked part-time at Ashley Furniture as a customer service representative and volunteered weekly at Memorial Hospital. Last April, Dunn attended the North-American Interfraternity Conference in Washington, D.C., where he was one of four undergraduates to receive an Award of Distinction. This fall, he is attending the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis, and plans to become a radiologist.

Outstanding Greek Adviser

Sara Jahansouz, the assistant director of student affairs at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga was named the 2010 Greek Adviser of the Year for Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. Dean Jahansouz earned a Bachelor of Science degree in life science from Kansas State University in 2004. She earned a Master of Science degree in education in student affairs administration from Indiana University in 2006, and Master of Public Administration degree from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in 2009. At Tennessee-Chattanooga, her current areas of responsibility include fraternity and sorority life, student conduct, and leadership development. Her service and support of the Greek System on the University of Tennesee-Chattanooga’s campus has been exemplary. Furthermore, her support and partnership with Lambda Chi Alpha’s Zeta-Phi chapter and the General Fraternity has been extraordinary.

Educational Programming at the 53rd General Assembly & Stead Leadership Seminar

An Outcome of Synergy

The educational component of the 53rd General Assembly & Stead Leadership Seminar was not only the result of a strategic and dynamic educational curriculum provided, it was also the product of a shared brotherhood amongst Lambda Chi Alpha’s international volunteer corps (the Master Stewards), the International Headquarters staff, and, most importantly, our undergraduate brothers.

Supported by a $400,000 grant from Lambda Chi Alpha’s Educational Foundation, the 53rd General Assembly & 2010 Stead Leadership Seminar saw more than 525 undergraduate brothers in attendance, more than 30 Master Stewards serving as educational programming leaders, and a curriculum that consisted of four large group presentations and an additional 12 small group education breakouts.

This year Lambda Chi Alpha provided each educational programming participant with the Education Workbook, that included participant materials for all education sessions and was designed for brothers to take home and use with their chapters. This was no small task, as providing this stand-alone resource required that small group breakouts build on large group presentations, that all participant materials match program facilitator guides, and that the small group facilitators had the materials well in advance in order to tailor a program delivery that would be in line with the participant materials in the workbook.

Lambda Chi Learning ModelAnother new development to this year’s educational programming was the enhancement of Lambda Chi Alpha’s Learning Model: Experience, Reflect, Make Meaning, and Share in small group breakout sessions. At the end of each session, undergraduate brothers filled out brief, one page reflections that identified the most valuable components of the educational session, as well as what they intended to take back to their home chapters. These were written on carbon copy sheets, with program facilitators taking a copy.

Immediately after the 53rd General Assembly, the Office of Administration compiled all reflection sheets, organized them by chapter, and provided them electronically to each participant, appropriate chapter officers, and the chapter’s ELC and Master Steward(s). This not only ensured that each chapter understood what its brothers learned and found valuable this summer, it also gave the ELCs and Master Stewards a clear and specific idea of what a chapter needed in terms of support with specific aspects of education and operations.

in and supporting where Lambda Chi Alpha is headed in terms of chapter and brother development.

Lambda Chi Alpha’s educational curriculum is leading the way in the Greek movement and garnering the attention of leaders in higher education, and the brotherhood is hopefully proud to know that this is the result of our undergraduate, alumni, and staff brothers all working together for the building up of one another and of Lambda Chi Alpha.

Associate Member RoundtableWhile our fully initiated brothers participated in the exemplification of our Initiation Ritual, associate members learned how to take their knowledge gained at the 53rd General Assembly and share it with brothers at their chapters. In a roundtable format, Master Stewards Wayne Gossard (Southern Methodist) and Mike Smith (Denver) also fielded questions from the associate members in attendance.

Council of Presidents Town HallPast Grand High Alpha Marty Smith (Valparaiso) kicked off a discussion for High Alphas that included a review of the new Operations Guides, exciting updates to fall 2010 ELC visitation, and the sharing of best practices amongst the High Alphas.

Call to BrotherhoodDirector of Education Tim Reuter led the large group presentation on our associate member development process, highlighting the need for employing our Learning Model and the importance of rooting the process in values.Master Stewards and ELCs then worked with small groups to translate the theories and strategies discussed in the large group into tactical plans for our undergraduate brothers.

Inner Circle Journey TrainingBrothers from the 23 chapters currently offering the Inner Circle Journey increased their awareness and understanding of how to be stewards in sustaining this developmental program for initiated brothers back at their home chapters.

Exoteric MysteriesThe 2010-2011 ELCs led large group training by exemplifying a handful of pre-Initiation events on stage, which were then debriefed with the undergraduate brothers by Director of Education Tim ReuterMaster Stewards and ELCs then worked with small groups to translate the theories and strategies discussed in the large group into tactical plans for our undergraduate brothers.

Tough Brotherhood Workshop with our Executive Vice PresidentBill Farkas (Butler) led a discussion on tough brotherhood that discussed the important nature of consequences and brother-to-brother accountability back at the chapter.

Officer/Chapter RoundtablesELCs and Master Stewards led roundtable discussions that were separated into eight categories from which undergraduate brothers could choose: Management Officers (Alpha, Gamma, Tau), Event Planning Officers (Beta, Iota, Epsilon), External Relations Officers (Theta, Delta, Rho), Education Officers (Kappa, Phi, Sigma), Chapters with fewer than 40 brothers, Chapters with 40 – 80 brothers, Chapters with 80-120 brothers, and Chapters with more than 120 brothers.

Chapter on TrialDave Westol, former Theta Chi executive director and founder of Limberlost Consulting, discussed the culture of hazing in the world today with a dynamic and interactive presentationMaster Stewards and ELCs then worked with small groups to translate the theories and strategies discussed in the large group into tactical plans for our undergraduate brothers.

Chapter Programming Wrap-Up/Action PlansEducational programming culminated with undergraduate brothers creating action plans to utilize at the chapter level, based on the total curriculum offered.ELCs and Master Stewards led these small group breakouts and helped undergraduate brothers identify action plans and delivery dates for goals and objectives.
