The Holiday Spirit – Giving Hope

Ebenezer Scrooge was not exactly filled with holiday spirit, but he had plenty of humbug

attitude! The good news is that he never had to encounter our incredibly valuable volunteers, always working to gather charitable bounty. Volunteers are repairing roofs and plumbing fixtures with the greatest of ease; and delivering meals and gift baskets to seniors in need. They are collecting food and warm blankets for the young and old, and are bound and determined to make sure that Gwinnett County seniors, children, and youth will not be hungry or cold.

This year, Home Instead Senior Care’s Santa for Seniors program did a fantastic job collecting items and preparing holiday gift baskets for more than 200 at-home seniors. Safeco Insurance also continued an outstanding 23-year holiday tradition of utilizing a Liberty Mutual Foundation grant to purchase food which is then packaged and delivered to at-home seniors by their employees. Likewise, Ricoh Electronics, Inc. employees continued a holiday gif t-giving program for seniors in need. This year, Elesys-

North America and Ernest Communications joined as corporate partners, providing gifts, joy, and hope for seniors at the Buford and Norcross Senior Centers.

However, no discussion of holiday spirit is complete without mentioning the superb toy collecting skills of Adam Nerenbaum. For the fifth year in a row, he has been personally responsible for giving kids hope with gifts from Santa.

This year I am once again thrilled to report that you, our volunteers, have given even more of yourselves to improve the quality of life for Gwinnett County seniors. In the face of all the negative discussion about funding reductions and program cutbacks,

our volunteers have never stood taller or prouder.

Regardless of what we hear about the economy, we need to remember that our seniors may be facing hunger, or lack of safe shelter, necessary

medicines, or adequate heat for the home.

Thanks to you, we anticipate that the collective efforts of our volunteers in 2009 may exceed $1 million in value of services. ‘Tis the season to reach out, help, and offer hope. Happy Holidays and thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

Thanks for Another Wonderful Thanksgiving Dinner! While many of us were enjoying a Thanksgiving feast with family and friends, a very special event took place at the Outback Steakhouse in Suwanee. More than 120 seniors, volunteers, and community members gathered for a special Thanksgiving dinner, courtesy of Outback Steakhouse.

Families who would not otherwise have had a Thanksgiving dinner, were able to

back to this community. Yanis and his staff have been a tremendous asset to our cause and we are very grateful for all their efforts!

share the blessings of volunteerism with fellow seniors and their families. Seniors who could not drive were picked up by volunteer Ray Sessions and his family. Volunteers delivered an additional 50+ meals to at-home seniors.

We would really like to tip our hat in appreciation to Yanis Latsis, the proprietor of Outback Steakhouse in Suwanee, and his staff for again giving

Toys for Tots Christmas party for HeadStart children at Norcross Human Services Center.

Going Above & Beyond

This has been a tough year for our Meals on Wheels program, but the

dedication of our volunteers has again helped to pull us through. We have been hit with multiple budget cutbacks that have affected the number of seniors we are able to serve, but our loyal volunteers continue to step up and make good things happen.

In case you had not heard, the demand for meals service continues to grow as our older population increases. We are approaching nearly 200 seniors on the monthly meals waiting list!

There are no easy solutions to our dilemma. We are still going to be dealing with funding difficulties in the coming year, but our volunteers will still play a major role in maintaining the quality of our program. Furthermore, if you want to really reach out and financially sponsor senior meals for a year, the need has never been greater.

To seek more information or if you wish to give hope to others who have extraordinary needs, please call Gary Galloway at 770.822.8837 to find out what opportunities you can help to support.

Pat’s Pearls of Wisdom

I have been fortunate this year to personally witness the best efforts by so many to help others with needs. These unselfish

acts of service by volunteers represent some of the good things that are occurring at a time when lots of bad things are happening with the economy.

Gwinnett County is facing unprecedented financial challenges, but I am heartened by the fact that our volunteers are on track to produce more than $1 million worth of

service value to our citizens! The hope and kindness offered by volunteers is the best present that anyone could ever ask for.

This rapidly-growing senior population is going to continue to need our time, talents, and treasures, so please plan to be on board with us for the coming year. Merry Christmas and Season’s Greetings. Remember, presenting hope is really awesome!

Project A.W.A.R.E. (Added Warmth Assistance for Residences of our

Elderly) is again assisting seniors to stay warm this winter. Gwinnett County Fire stations, as well as senior centers in Buford, Lawrenceville, and Norcross are accepting donations of new electric portable heaters. For safety reasons, all heaters should be new and operated by electricity. Any tax-deductible donations

In addition to what you already do, please give some consideration to becoming involved in Friends of Gwinnett County Senior Services committees for special projects that include:• 8th Annual Silent Auction • Charity Golf Events• 2nd Annual Crawfish Boil • Delmar Garden’s Holiday Tour of Trees

to support this wonderful cause should be made out to Friends of Gwinnett County Senior Services (a non-profit organization that privately aids our seniors.) Please send to 75 Langley Drive, Lawrenceville, GA 30046.

Last winter, 45 portable heaters were distributed to provide heat in senior’s homes. Some monetary donations may also be used to provide emergency utility bill assistance. For more information, call Melanie Miller at 770.822.8842 or e-mail her at [email protected].
