Message from the Chairperson

Ms. Jennis Ho

Nothing in this world is more equal than death. Whether it happens unexpectedly or not,

every one of us has to come to this point in our life. Death had never been as simple as a

“one person has gone” business. Although it may be treated as “let bygones be bygones”

in fact it involves and affects every person related to the deceased. The lost of a loved one,

some may become very depressed from the sorrow they encounter and may not recover for

a very long time. The Comfort Care Concern Group is there to serve these people since its

establishment in 1987, we served thousands of these people in our 24 years of history. With

the help of the unconditional and faithful service of our volunteers, we have been able to

sooth the bereaved ones by counselling and supporting them. A vote of thanks is sincerely

extended to them.

From the number of persons who seek help from us, 40% of them initiated voluntarily. We

truly believe that the general public has accepted the need for someone like us to provide

the kind of service to help them walk through these difficult times. Of the cases we served,

more than half of the help-seekers lost their loved ones unexpectedly. These bring about

many complex cases in which our staffs need to equip themselves with more knowledge

and skill to help the bereaved ones to “open themselves up and lead a new life”. In this

regard, we organize clinical supervision group to enhance their awareness of sympathy and

sensitivity in dealing with the service user. Volunteers have always been our partners. Last

year, we successfully trained 60 newly recruited volunteers in areas covering our mission,

medical, psychological and religious point of view toward death. Another 60 volunteers

were trained to carry out Funeral support service. They are now helping those who are in a

helpless state when losing their loved ones.

Funeral support is a new and unique kind of service to be offered in the Chinese Community.

It is automatically avoid the mentioning of death and funeral in daily lives. This service brings

about a breakthrough of this custom .Volunteers not only provided a guidance service to

the bereaved helping them to complete the formalities needed in funerals, but also guide

them to go through the difficult times and cultivate a positive approach towards life.

On behalf of the board of Directors, Volunteers and those who used our service, I wish

to thank The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charity Foundation, The Community Chest Trust

Fund, The Keswick Foundation and HKCSS Elderly Community Care Fund for their

continued financial support enabling us to provide the services to the needy. The Chinese

character “贐”(Cantonese: zeon2, Mandarin: jin4) literally means “a last gift to be presented

when parting” which is very meaningful to everyone and I sincerely invite you to join and

support us.

Bereavement therapeutic group

In order to achieve a resonance effect amongst the participants, people with a similar bereavement situation were grouped together. We run six bereavement therapeutic groups with 40 participants who had lost their most loved family members (husband, wife, parents etc.) These sessions were led by a counsellor. A past service receiver who had gone through a similar bereavement situation session was also invited to join the session to tell the participants of how he/she had gone through his/her difficult situation and encouraged participants to share the experience and take a positive approach towards their future.

Orientation meeting for the newly bereaved

These are orientation and sharing meetings aimed at helping the bereaved. It is led by a counsellor and a past- bereaved person who volunteers to share his/her story of bereavement with the participants so as to minimize their negative emotions and regain confidence. Six such meetings were organized with 90 people took part. These orientations and sharing were well received by them. Many of them had asked for further gatherings.

Befriending visit by volunteers

13

Page 15: CCCG Annual report 2010-2011.pdf

During the bereaved period, the bereaved may feel lonely, lack of care. They longed for someone to listen to their grievances. However, their family members or friends were unable to relieve them. As such, CCCG had arranged over 100 befriending visitation to 30 bereaved families. With the help of our trained volunteers providing emotional support, their ill feelings were greatly alleviated.

Sunflower mutual help group

The Sunflower Mutual Help Group played an important role in the services for the bereaved. It was formed in 1996 by a group of people who had used our counselling service and found it useful. There are currently about 50 active members. Through sharing of experience, mutual support and encouragement, they were able to face different problems positively. During the period of reporting, the group had organized several activities including the activities hosted during Christmas and Chinese New Year to promote a sense of cheering up among the members. Members in appreciation of the service took part in CCCG’s Walkathon fundraising event and offered their service in the prize presentation ceremony of the CCCG.

Child bereavement counselling service

In January 2011 we launched a bereavement counselling service for children with funds provided by the Keswick Foundation. The target population of this service is children under the age of 18 in the form of personal and group counselling.

During the year we dealt with 26 cases of children representing about 10% of the total yearly case load. Ratio for boys and girls seeking service is about 6:4; the age range is between 2 and 16. The cause of bereavement range from lost of father (73%), mother (35%); sudden death of dear ones (60%) and anticipated death due to incurred illness (40%).

40% of the cases were referred to CCCG by bereaved family; 35% and 15% from school. They seek for help due to emotional, behavioral problems, and parents having difficulty in helping their children to face the death of their dear ones.

Funeral support service

This service is necessary because people are often shocked and lost of direction when they had lost their dear ones. It is aimed at helping them to go through the formalities of funerals. These include accompanying them to meet the funeral agents; obtaining death certificates; booking of crematorium facilities and niches for the storage of human ash remains etc. This service is funded by the Keswick Foundation.

Of the 85 funeral cases we served, 69% are females and 31% are males. 29% are age 41-50, 17% age 31-40, 15% age 71-80, 12% age 51-60, 8% age 21-30 and 4% age 11-20. 86% are in lack of family and social support in handling the funeral, and 14% are new immigrants and relatives of the deceased from the Mainland who come to Hong Kong on two-way permits for the sole purpose of organizing the funeral. Many (49%) of the deceased families are CSSA recipients and Social Welfare Department is involved in providing funeral funding.

We came to their aid through referrals from hospital (35%), walk-in applications (21%), social welfare organization (23%) and in-house referrals (21%).

Services for the terminally-ill

Counselling Service

Suffering from terminally-illness could bring great pain and distress to the sick as well as their family members. They are emotionally depressed and might be feared of the death threat and regretted for what they had done in the past and wanted to do some remedies. They are unable to do so due to poor health condition. Their anxiety affects those who look after them and become stressful and helpless. To relieve both the sick and the caretaker from these situations, we provide them with counselling services.

Of the 21 cases we handled during the year, 76% are females. Most of them are adults ranging from 31 and 80 years of age. 53% of the cases were through hospital referrals. The rest are walk-in help seekers (18%) NGOs and IFSC (29%)

Befriending visitation by volunteers

Apart from providing counselling service to the terminally-ill, volunteers are sent to visit them at hospitals and elderly residential homes and home visits in various parts of the Territory.

Activities in hospitals / elderly homes

In addition to the regular visits, our volunteers also help our clients to hold parties to celebrate traditional festivals such as Chinese New Year, Christmas, Mid-Autumn festival and Dragon Boat festival etc. On these festival days, our volunteers organize special activities to celebrate the occasions with the patients and their family members. 700 people and 70 volunteers joined the celebrations during the year.

Volunteer training and continuous support

Recruitment, training and continuous support

Volunteers play a very important role in our organization. Without their faithful service, we cannot survive the demand of the society. Recruitment and training of volunteers have been an on-going and important part of our activities.

Last year we recruited 60 new volunteers and offered them basic training courses aimed at providing them with basic knowledge in respect of physiological, medical and psychological behavioral effects in hospice care and bereavement.

For funeral support, we organized training sessions aimed at equipping them with basic knowledge in traditional funeral formalities, procedures need to be followed in dealing with Government Department. Refreshment sessions and group discussion are also held to encourage them to share their experience in the course of their work and skills in dealing with clients.

Besides basic training, our organization also place great emphasis on continuous support to the volunteers. During the service, they might encounter difficulties in emotional skills. Therefore, we continued to arrange various in-service training courses, case discussion meetings, supervision sessions, group sharing and gathering activities so as to enhance their knowledge and skill as well as to facilitate mutual support and encouragement in the team work.

Community Education

Life and Death Education Course 2011

During the first quarter of 2011, we organized 9 sessions on “life and death” education for participants to share their experience in “life and death.” In these sessions, lead speakers go through aspects such as philosophy, religion, medical, traditional and social. Games of role playing, visits to people who need help and essay writing of their feelings to assess their feedback are conducted. These talks were well received by the more than 20 participants.

These talks are all aimed at helping people to cultivate a positive attitude towards life and death, grief bring about by death of loved ones and the value of life so as to educate them to walk through difficult times.

Psycho-educational group

To promote “Life and Death” Education in the community, we organized 4 experiential Psycho-education groups of 4 periods each. Participants are brought to experience and to think about the meaning of Life and Death and putting them into practice on real live situation.

Your help in time of my difficulty will never be forgotten.

Ah Yung (bereaved)

When I was extremely sad and lost, not knowing how to manage the funeral of my wife, fortunately the staff and volunteers of the CCCG stepped in helping me. Your kindness friendliness and dedicated attitude seemed like my family members. I am so thankful for your concern and help that I realized there was love on earth. My thanks to the CCCG.

I think the volunteer training course conducted by the CCG is very practical and the visitations at the hospitals are very meaningful.

Ah Keung (volunteer)

The hospital visits and the funeral support service reinforce me to treasure the people and things around me. I am grateful to the CCCG for giving me the opportunity of caring for others.

Kwei Ying (volunteer)

Adele

The rendering of service allows me to learn to cherish people and things.

Adele (volunteer)

Suki

The CCCG offers courses in variety of skills, such as haircutting. It allows volunteers to reach out to more clienteles and to derive more benefits from it.

Suki (volunteer)

Sharing from the volunteers:

義工Pamela

Thank you for the opportunity which the CCCG has provided. To be a volunteer, it is a chance of learning and giving. In the service I have learnt a lot and have cherished what I have now.

Pamela (volunteer)

Being a volunteer of the CCCG, I have learnt a lot of skills in communicating with patients/the bereaved. The staff are attentive and respectful in taking care of and supporting the volunteers at the moment of need.

Yee Chung (volunteer)

Paul

The CCCG is a progressive hospice service organization. The staff, volunteers and service users are continually growing. Perhaps “growth” is the most important ingredient between life and death.

Paul (volunteer)

Mica

The accompanying role has strengthened my sense of empathy toward others. It is great!

Mica (volunteer)

In the organization, I get to know many people who care for others. We all agree on the mission of the CCCG, hoping to walk together side by side in the path of life continually.

Ah Wing (volunteer)

Phoebe

I cherish every chance of visiting every single patient and learn a lot which I have not gained before at work. When I have the chance of meeting the same patient again, I learn the lesson of “cherishing the present one.”
