Evidence:

C1.1.1 & C1.1.2: formal training completed at Conestoga College in ethical counselling practices, Psychology degree at Brock completed a course in statistics and research focused on understanding how to effectively interpret and measure information related to human behaviour, assessment certifications Strong, Personality Dimensions, Facet 5, and MBTI all covered units in ethical use of instruments and interpretations. Case conferencing and staff meetings regularly provide opportunities for us to discuss ethical decisions we are experiencing or have come across. In my current role as a Supervisor I am regularly consulting with staff regarding ethical business and counselling practice; providing mentorship on this topic.

C1.2.1 Developing and maintaining relationships with other professionals both inside our organization and outside is an important part of my job as a Supervisor. Over the past four years I have developed strong partnerships with professionals in the areas of literacy, newcomer services, mental health, youth programing, financial benefits support organizations, and education & training providers. This enables us to coordinate services for our clients and also serves as an opportunity to ensure that other professionals are aware of our services and how we may be able to help their clients related to employment questions. My courses in human resource management and professional development training in Employment Outcomes provided formal structures on developing and maintaining work relationships such as these.

C1.2.2 Throughout my career I have regularly participated in informal and formal upgrading of my knowledge and skills as it relates to employment counselling (Conestoga College’s CDP courses), leadership and management skills, and capacity building for individuals and the business. Most recently my training has focused building program capacity through improved measurements, coaching, and business development skills. This recent training has enabled me to lead our site to improved results each year since we commenced the program.

C1.2.3: I keep up to date on technology through in house training on social media tools and databases, and by using the tools in my work. I encourage clients to learn about the technology that is affecting their work (work goals) and encourage them to develop stronger skills in these areas. I use Linked-In to develop and maintain my own network, and to research discussions on professional topics of interest.

C1.3 .1: I have completed formal training in Solution-focused frameworks and counselling skills through University of Toronto’s Social Work Faculty’s Continuing Education courses in Solution-focused Basics and Team Apps and as part of the Conestoga College’s Interviewing Techniques course. In 2011 we participated in professional development training related to our service delivery model, providing employment counselling framework and skillsets to working with clients in an outcomes based model. In training and mentoring staff I strongly encourage and support Solution-focused framework in their approach to working clients.

C1.3.2 Formal training in collection, analysis, and use of information has been covered through MBTI and Strong Interest Inventory assessment training, Psychology statistics and research methods course, Human Resource Management program’s Economics course, and through professional development training in data collection as part of the capacity training through Employment Ontario. In work, I train new staff on appropriate and ethical collection and use of information from intake, assessments, to file management practices. As a Coordinator I run reports regularly to evaluate business progress, client demographics, service levels, and specific client file audits. . As an employment advisor I had to collect and analyse trends related to general labour market activity as well as specific information that related to specific clients and their goals

C1.4.1.1, C1.4.2, C1.4.3 I and C1.4.4. I have completed formal training in goal setting, time management, and project management skills through the Organizational Development and Organizational Behaviour Management courses completed in Humber College’s Human Resource Management program. I have received informal training on how to manage a caseload and through a variety of Solution-focused trainings I have learned how to use my time with clients in a productive way that is more likely to generate results. I have completed formal training in counselling ethics, counselling techniques, and appropriate case noting through Career Development Courses completed at Conestoga College. All interactions with clients are required to be case noted and are subject to audits I am also required to manage the workflow of the team to ensure we meet contract obligations regarding quality of service as well as the number of people served. We collect and monitor client evaluations and feedback provided, and responds to any client concerns. I also review reports and track sheets to monitor client progress and effectiveness of interventions provided, making recommendations to their employment advisor or the job developer when it appears an adjustment in interventions may be beneficial.

Evidence:

C2.1: I completed course at Conestoga College on employment counselling with diverse populations. I have also completed AODA training through work. In work, most of my 20 years of employment experience has been in community based programs where diverse client groups are supported (newcomers, socioeconomic, age, gender, experience, etc.). As a supervisor I have hired and supervised a team which also is diverse and one that supports diversity. As an employment counsellor I regularly address client questions related to diversity issues in the workplace and in job search.

C2.2: listening and communication skills training has been a critical part of courses taken such as Solution-Focused training, Motivational interviewing, and through Conestoga’s CDP course Professional Ethics, Counseling and Interviewing. In all cases much emphasis was placed on active listening skills and on effective responses, both in writing and orally. Through 1-1 counselling with clients I have developed strong communication skills which has enable me to quickly and effectively develop professional, supportive, and action-oriented relationships with the individuals I work with. I often receive compliments from clients that they feel ‘understood’ by me as they share their journey.

C2.3 Developing productive interactions is critical especially in a result-oriented/outcome based service delivery model. Training in the areas of Stages of Change, Solution-focused strategies, and MI all address issues in working with reluctant client, and developing skills in assisting these clients in making positive changes towards their goals. Through the 1-1 work with clients, I balance the support and information I provide with action/involvement from them. My approach with clients is to coach them in areas that can help them improve their self-awareness or skills, and encourage them to take responsibility for actions they are capable of so that they feel a greater sense of control and empowerment in their journey.

Evidence:

C3.1.1 , C3.1.2, C3.1.3, C3.1.4, C3.1.5 Career development knowledge – formal training through CDP courses at Conestoga, personal and professional development readings, and through my university degree where I completed courses in Adolescent Development, Aging, Child Development, Gender Roles, Abnormal Psychology, and Social Psychology. Through all of these courses I have been able to apply better understand both the process and the role of career development in the lives of individuals I work with. Being able to identify career development paradigms applicable to different clients has enabled me to work with the client to develop strategies that they are more likely to implement. My informal training as an outplacement consultant with ABC Transitions Counselling provided me with a good foundation to understand and share the process of career transitions with my clients. It provided me insight into the grieving process that often comes with job loss, and the coaching skills to help clients regain a sense of role and work value with the transition. As the focus of degree was on developmental psychology and social psychology, it prepared me to understand the human experience and the paradigms people work within.

Formal training for the MBTI and the Strong Interest Inventory also addressed the importance of understanding client context when providing their interpretations and debriefing about their assessment reports. This is particularly important when dealing with unexpected results or test response issues, and the factors that could be influencing scoring ex. Depression, loss of career identity, lack of career awareness/exposure etc.

C3.1.7 and C3.1.8 My training in Human Resources Management has enabled me to relate employment structures, hiring practices, and employer perspectives to the career planning and employment search. Through this I share with clients the importance of understanding the work climate as a dynamic experience and that careers are not developed in isolation. The courses I have completed in economics and management provides the business perspective to understand, and share with clients, the labour market trends and the factors that influence their fields. I connect with people in my network and seek professional resources to locate information on specific labour market questions. I subscribe to various local labour market blogs and e-newsletters as a source of following trends, and regularly review media channels for updates on news. When working with clients directly I strongly encourage labour market research that is well rounded and includes a variety of sources such as government publications, industry publications, associations, blogs and discussion boards, education and training trends, and by information interviewing with people in the field.

Evidence:

C4.1 I have completed formal training in employment counselling for special needs and diverse populations (Conestoga) which provided emphasis of identifying needs and community partners who provide specific services, and the importance of using the referrals to tap into expertise and most appropriate program/service options for people. The Employment Specialist Certificate from University of San Francisco also provided specific training related to assessing and developing accommodations for clients with disabilities and special needs. Through this training I have gained an appreciation for the need to break down tasks and provide basic skill training to task in ways that meet unique learning needs of multi-barrier clients. I have received and provided general needs assessment training to staff in tools based on the Common Assessment. Formally this needs assessment training was part of courses completed through Conestoga. In work, conducting needs assessments both formally and informally have been a part of every employment counselling role I have held. These assessments involved identifying goals, assessing barriers and challenges, identifying strengths, and developing action plans. Although the focus of my roles has primarily been to provide employment and career counselling to clients, being aware and determining if there are other needs (housing, health, financial, childcare etc) that may impact the success of the employment intervention is something I did at the start and throughout the intervention as needed. Referrals were made to connect clients to additional supports as needed. As a Supervisor with Careers Are Us, I was involved in developing a needs assessment tool that was used to assess clients for case managed employment services.

C4.1.2 and C4.1.3 As a Supervisor I have had to initiate and maintain a strong referral network in order to more effectively assist my clients to complimentary services in the community. I attend meetings with community partners when possible, to participate in conversation related to client services or issues, and to develop a stronger working relationship for the purposes of mutual referrals. Wherever possible I try to follow up with community partners and with clients to assess the effectiveness of the referral I provided, and to learn how to improve the referral or intervention recommended when possible.

Facilitation of groups – training on group facilitation was provided both on the job and through other professional opportunities. Training in Personality Dimensions provided direct training on group facilitation techniques and strategies, including relaying of key concepts, adult learning principles, and dealing with difficult and challenging group situations.

Over the years I have facilitated a range of group information sessions and one day workshops to address a range of job search topics from resume writing, interviewing, job search strategies, and how to use technology in your search. When I was a facilitator for the Career Directions program (1996-1997) at New Careers to You, I co-facilitated a 3 week career planning program for unemployed individuals. Through this program, I facilitated topics including dealing with job loss, assessments (skills, values, interests), career planning and research (including tools and resources), job search (resume writing to interviewing), and career goal setting.

Over the past 20 years, the majority of my work with clients has taken place through 1-1 interactions and case management. I would describe my style as client-centred. Through the 1-1 sessions I worked with clients to assess needs and set career goals. I conducted assessments (interests, skills, personality traits, and values) to assist client in gaining self-awareness and confidence related to their career path. I introduced clients to a range of job search strategies from traditional tools to new tools such as Linked-In and Twitter. During these sessions my approach has been to identify client strengths and goals, and work with them to build confidence and adopt new tools that could enhance their search and help build their career. While I guide them through the process and help them navigate their search, I maintain that they take as much ownership as they can manage over their search at each stage in the process. By doing so I use my time effectively, can assess their engagement and commitment to the process, and enable them to build confidence and resiliency for their next search.

Evidence:

I completed several capacity building training sessions facilitated by Sarah Delicate and Angela Hoyt (through Evolution Group, BBMD Consulting, and DTG-EMP inc 2011-2014) )related to effective management, service delivery, and capacity building in the Employment Ontario Employment Services model. I also participated in training by Alan Anderson (2011) and Angle Hoyt (Evolution Group inc. 2014)related to developing capacity of job development services as an intervention to assist individuals with multiple barriers to employment with increased access to the labour market. My training in human resources management (Humber College 1991-1992) and the leadership training provided through my current employer (2013) has enabled me to respond to the business and staffing needs related to running an effective employment services site.

As a Supervisor for the Employment Services program I am responsible for building and managing capacity of my team and the services it delivers within the funding guidelines. To build capacity involves significant marketing outreach and partnership development, to increase awareness and activity at our centre as well as developing effective referral interventions for clients. Managing a site budget, staffing, and reporting related to my site. Reviewing our service reports and adjusting our capacity and business strategies as needed is required to meet our contract obligations.

In my current role I also facilitate presentations and information sessions in the community to help increase awareness of our services to both individuals and to other community service professionals. I have facilitated information sessions at Service Canada, Community Mental Health programs, and at a community networking group. I have also facilitated customized workshops for high school credit programs, newcomer programs, and for youth pre-employment training programs. Seeking opportunities to develop and enhance community partnerships ensures that everyone’s programs remain relevant to the community’s needs.
