Learning and Teaching Activities suggested for accessing Entry Level 1-3

Resources

Teacher demonstration of the different ways you can get someone’s attention.

Show pupils the video on correct and incorrect ways to get attention in the classroom.

Role play – pupils in pairs role play ways of getting someone’s attention to ask a question. Photograph the pupils taking part as evidence.

Use laminated cards to identify people who can help in school, at home and in the community.

Take pupils on a tour around school to identify all of the people who can help them e.g. classroom assistant, school nurse, office staff, and canteen staff. Pupils could photograph the staff members (with permission) and create a gallery to display in school.

Group work – each pupil to choose one of the ‘people who help’ cards and suggest a situation when they would need to ask for help.

At Entry Level 3 pupils pupils should identify people who can help and a method for requesting their help.

Use the PowerPoint to explain in simple terms what an opinion is. Provide the pupils with a range of statements and ask them to give

their opinion e.g. spiders are nice, maths is my favourite subject,

Learning and Teaching Activities suggested for accessing Entry Level 1–3

Resources

Using the whiteboard, use the internet to research the local council for your area.

Invite a local councillor into school to talk to the class about their role and areas of responsibility.

If possible, take the class on a visit to the local council offices. Use the resources from CCEA thematic unit ‘Have Your Say’ to

identify the areas of responsibility of the local council and the services which it provides. (Resources 14, 15 and 16).

Group work – pupils to discuss and consider something which they would like their local council to consider as an area to develop in the future (Resource 17).

Show pupils the PowerPoint presentation on the voting process. Use the CCEA Resources to highlight the different ways to vote and

to consider which method of voting is suitable for a variety of voting situations. (Resources 5 and 6).

Using the provided ‘Voting Papers’ (Resources 7 and 8) pupils will vote for favourite free time activity and TV programme.

Set up a mock election in the class. Pupils could be split into groups/parties e.g. the arty party, the baking party, the sporty party. Each group designs a logo and a manifesto (e.g. the arty party will design and make new classroom displays, the baking party will make cakes on Fridays, the sporty party will organise sporting events etc.).Give each party time to present their manifesto to the rest of the class.Set up a voting booth in the classroom and for pupils to cast their votes.Count votes and announce the winning party.Activity can be developed to involve the whole school, or as part of a

special assembly.Activity can be developed as a cross curricular theme, involving art (designing a logo, voting cards), English (manifesto speeches), mathematics (counting votes).

At Entry Level 3 pupils are required to identify the steps needed to vote in a local election (Resources 10, 11, 12 and 13).
