The news of the conflict between President Obama and Syrian President Assad is really dominating the news lately. Although the matter is quite serious, it’s some-

times soothing to find proper humor in stressful situations. I recently saw a political cartoon showing Mr. Obama saying to Mr. Assad, “If you step one foot over this Red Line, I will attack your country – but I’ll have to get back with you as to when that might be!”

But, perhaps we shouldn’t be too quick to judge our Presi-dent. He was probably conditioned by his up bringing, as all of us were to one extent or another. How many times must his

mother (or grandmother) have said, while shopping at Kmart, “Barack, I’m not gona tell you one more time”, or, “You just wait till we get home!” That was the way he was condi-tioned to threat action. And Mr. Assad may have been raised in a similar manner. He was probably told, “You’ll be eating off the mantle for a week.” or, “Boy, I’m going to warp your frame!” I suspect that his frame remained intact and he had most of his meals at the dining room table. Their conditioning didn’t really teach them a sense of urgency.

I, however, had a little “conditioning” of my own growing up. These were the pre-Kmart days and my mother had plenty of time to take action as needed. When there was a problem, she would grab that belt off the nail on the door frame and begin a wholesale swinging of it, striking anyone within reach – guilty or not! Questions would be asked later. There was no delayed action. She didn’t form a committee or seek proper council.

And sometimes waiting too long can give your opponent time to make a plan. I re-member being in the sixth grade when my teacher said she was going to paddle me for something I said. It was on a Friday when she said to me, “I’m going to whip you next Thursday at 2:00. Be thinking about it”. That gave me the time I needed to formu-late a plan of action. I figured she might not even remember by then, but I couldn’t take that chance. I decided I would be sick the following Thursday, giving her additional time to forget the matter. When the day came, however, I forgot about my plan and went to school anyway. As my teacher had a much better memory than I, the punishment took place on schedule – two O’clock sharp!

Although I don’t always agree with this administration, I am in no way qualified to make decisions effecting our country or the world, and I suppose that’s why Mr. Obama is presi-dent, and not me. But I’m also mighty glad our president didn’t have a dose of that “Daisy Williams Conditioning” like I did. We may just now be getting over World War III.

Joe

He (Assad) was probably told, “You’ll be eating off the mantle for a week.”

What is Infl uencing Your Buyers?Remember the day when you couldn’t wait until your next dec-

orating magazine arrived in the mail? If you are like me, you savor the time that you can have alone to soak it all in without interrup-tion and dream of how your space could be.

Many will decide to remodel a room in their house based on a picture that they saw in a maga-zine.

Well guess what, the buyers for our homes are not as magazine crazy as we are. Th ey have the internet literally at their fi ngertips and they are burning up the airwaves researching till their litt le fi ngers get callouses.

With internet sites like Houzz.com and Pinterest, these buyers can get weekly emails based on their interest and immediately look at a photo that will inspire them to remodel or infl uence them on what to look for in their next house.

Catalogs like Pott ery Barn, Ballard’s Design. West Elm, and Restoration Hardware are also a huge infl uence with today’s home buyer.

Why do I bring this up? If you are selling your house and you want to att ract a buyer, knowing this information and using it to your advantage will help you more than you know. Bringing in ele-ments of these infl uential sites and catalogs, will help buyers be able to visualize themselves living in the space because there is something there that they can relate to. If all the furniture and accessories look like their parents or grandparents, it can make the house feel dated and they may pass on the house.

Now I’m not saying that we don’t use or need magazines any longer, because clearly by the stacks of them all over our house, they are necessary. Sure I can take a wifi tablet or use my cell phone to “read” a magazine while waiting in carpool line or at the MD’s offi ce, but half the time I can’t get the things to work, and I’ve never had to power down a magazine for a plane to take off for fl ight.

If you or someone you know needs help in fi nding out what “infl uential” elements to use in their house, send them my way. I love this stuff !

Transmission uid is another key subsys-tem for you to be knowledgeable about and to be able to check on. Fortunately, it is pre y simple to keep up with. Almost all of the cars made today have some type of automatic transmission, one that does not require you to shi gears or use a clutch pedal. Only the cheapest cars or the most high performance cars come with manual transmissions. So, we will address only automatic transmissions in this discussion. e automatic transmission relies on the physical and viscous proper-ties of a liquid called automatic transmission uid, usually referred to as ATF. See, I told you this would be simple.

Like the rest of the uids, it is designed to be checked by the owner and then taken to a professional for service if there are any prob-lems found by the owner. So, your actions and responsibilities here are rather simple and straightforward. If you haven’t go en the message by now, read up on the topic in your Owner’s Manual, which should be dog eared and worn out by now if you’ve fol-lowed my recommendations. e transmis-sions in cars now are pre y well engineered and almost never require any a ention until the car has a considerable number of miles on it or unless you abuse it, but none of you would ever do that.

In order to check transmission uid, your Owner’s Manual will probably to tell you to have the car warmed up and running, on a at surface, in Park. Locate and pull the transmission dipstick and wipe it with that now warn-out and lthy rag you’ve been us-ing. Or splurge and treat yourself to a clean one. Reinsert it and pull it again. Read the level, noting if the red uid is between the marks or under the low mark. If the level is low, take the car to your mechanic or to a transmission shop and have them do a more detailed check. Each manufacturer seems

CAR CARE ESSENTIALSCheck Your Car’sTransmission Fluid

to have their own avor of ATF and those meant for one manufacturer are not recom-mended for use in another manufacturer’s cars. Don’t use an ATF designated for a Ford product in a Chrysler product, for example. So, just take it to an auto service shop and have them gure it out. ey keep ATF on hand for all brands of cars and know what to do or not to do.

Like some of the systems we have talked about but unlike some of the others, the au-tomatic transmission can go a relatively long time with the without any a ention. But when it does go, it goes big time and costs big bucks. Most likely if you have transmission problems you will be forewarned by a puddle of red uid on the ground at about the mid-dle of the car and performance or noise is-sues while driving. (Red uid on the ground at the front of the car usually indicates power steering problems. Di erent uid, di erent place, same color).

Now, wasn’t that easy? Keep up the good work.

Your transmission dipstick will look some-thing like this.

What to watch for when the Viking ship sails this Fall. A er a season lled with bumps and bruises last year, the coaching sta are looking to be a much improved team. “Our back eld is solid” with the return of Benton Washington and TJ Wom-mack as the Mail carriers with 2 QBs vying for the job plus coach Walburn feels that he has some depth at the receiver spots as well. Defense will be a work in progress.

What to look for from the Indians this Fall. Bryce Gemmel will be under center with his favorite target Markel Boston with him again. Last year as a sophomore Gemmel threw for over 1500 yards with 8 tds. Tailback Weylin Orr is expected to anchor the running game. On the ip side of the line e Indians are going to young and lost the services of Junior Tristan Mann to a knee injury. However they still have Jay McKnight covering the middle for them and he should be a college prospect this Fall.

Mentionables from the Cougar camp, Quarterback Bailey Bryant. is young man is destined for greatness. As a sophomore he threw for nearly 1800 yards notching 16 touchdowns to go along with the 1800 yards. He will be joined in the back eld by running back J K Bri . Crossing the line, the Cats have strong linebacker core. However a team does not lose a player like Trey Ma hews and not feel the pain so it looks like a lot of points for the o ense. And a wait and see for the defense.

New Newnan Doctor Cautions Community About Lung DiseaseBoard-certifi ed pulmonologist Mayur Patel, M.D., who re-

cently joined Piedmont Physicians Pulmonology in Newnan, Ga., is looking to spread awareness about a litt le-known, yet not uncommon form of lung disease that aff ects nearly 200,000 peo-ple across the United States.

“Pulmonary brosis a ects people om a wide range of demo-graphics; however, many people still do not know much about the dis-ease,” said Dr. Patel, who has practiced pulmonology for 13 years. “With 50,000 new cases of the disease occurring each year, much greater awareness surrounding the disease is needed.”

Pulmonary fi brosis, which is one of the most common types of lung disease, consists of severe scarring of the lungs, making it diffi cult for the lungs to deliver oxygen throughout the body. Pul-monary fi brosis can be caused by environmental hazards, drug side eff ects, infections, genetics, or it can occur with no known cause.

“It’s unfortunate, but sometimes we simply don’t know what causes pulmonary brosis. Even the symptoms can be subtle until the disease has progressed and lung functioning has worsened,” said Dr. Patel, who earned his medical degree from Amravati University in Amravati, India. “Despite all the unknowns surrounding the disease, there are treatment options for these patients including medication, oxygen therapy and lung rehabilitation.”

Symptoms of Pulmonary Fibrosis include shortness of breath, dry cough, fatigue and weakness, chest discomfort and rapid weight loss. Patients who experience these symptoms are encour-aged to visit their doctor.

Prior to joining Piedmont Physicians, Dr. Patel was an at-tending physician with Pulmonary and Critical Care Associates in Jacksonville, Fla. and Holston Valley Medical Center in King-sport, Tenn. He received his training in Cardiovascular Th oracic Surgery at Bombay Hospital and Research Center in Mumbai, India.

Available at Piedmont Physicians Pulmonology located at 775 Poplar Road, Suite 130 in Newnan, Ga. Dr. Patel welcomes new patients and accepts most insurance plans. To schedule an ap-pointment, call 770-683-6921.

Th e average monthly premium is expected to go up just $1.64, which will bring it to $32.60 a month, with more than 99 percent of benefi cia-ries having access to a plan.

Medicare Advantage plans oft en (but not always) include Part D prescription plans, as well as expanded health cover-age that the original Medicare doesn’t cover. Th e Part D pre-scription-drug plan will be ap-proximately $31 for the fourth year in a row.

Open enrollment starts Oct. 15 and closes Dec. 7 for health and drug plans. Plans change from year to year, and so do individual needs. Take some time to research the plans to make sure you get what you need.

If you need help picking out a plan, call 1-800-633-4227 for more information. Or you can go online and compare plans at www.cms.gov (click on Medicare) or at www.medicare.gov (click Sign Up/Change Plans).Remember: If you already have Medicare, you do not need to en-roll in Obamacare. (Hang up on the scammers who call.)

“Local Birds and Birdscaping”Ms. Audrey Harrelson of Wild Birds Unlimited in Peachtree City will be the

guest speaker at the Backyard Association (BYA) meeting scheduled for October 8, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at the Coweta County Extension Office.

Audrey and her husband, Bobby, opened Wild Birds Unlimited in January 2004 after becoming tired of traveling to the north side of Atlanta or mail ordering spe-cialty bird feeding items and realizing that others were in the same position.

Both Audrey and Bobby retired from law enforcement and enjoy sharing the joy of watching all kinds of wildlife (except armadillos) in their yard. They want everyone to know that birdwatching and feeding is not a hobby that requires a lot of money or time.

Plan to join us on October 8th to hear Audrey discuss our local birds and ways that you can landscape your gardens to attract them.

The Backyard Association, sponsored by Coweta County Master Gardener Ex-tension Volunteers (MGEVs), is a free seminar held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Coweta County Extension Office located at 255 Pine Road in Newnan. Please call the Extension Office at (770) 254-2620 for reserva-tions and to register for door prizes.

Encouraging Words

“We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes

an awful lot of self-discipline and effort.”~ Jesse Owens

Q“Self-discipline begins with the mastery

of your thoughts. If you don’t control what you think, you can’t control

what you do. Simply put, self-discipline enables you to think fi rst and

act afterwards.”~ Napolean Hill

Q“Self-discipline is an act of cultivation.

It requires you to connect today’s actions with tomorrows results. There’s a season

for sewing and a season for reaping.Self-discipline helps you know

which is which.”~ Gary Blair

Q“Talent without discipline is like

an octopus on roller skates. There’s plenty of movement but

you never know if it’s going to be forward, backwards or sideways!”

~ Gary Blair

Q“Something in nature causes us

to start slacking off at our moment of greatest accomplishment. As you become

successful, you will need a great deal of self-discipline not to loose your sense of balance, humility and commitment.”

~ Ross Perot

Q“A man without self-control is like a city

broken into and left without walls.”~ Proverbs 25:28
