Since this business of publishing The Coweta Shop-

per is a second career for me, I try to watch what

some of the other successful publications are doing.

Perhaps I can learn something new. But there is one thing my

simple mind just can’t seem to grasp – readership numbers.

According to industry standards, a publisher can legitimately

claim that 3.4 people will read each copy printed. Although I

want to be competitive, I have decided that it’s just way more

trouble than it’s worth. And here’s why.

In a three-week period we mail the Shopper to every home and business in the county

– 50,400 addresses. At 3.4 readers each, that’s 171,360! Since there are not that many

humans in our county, we can just import the entire population of, say, Tallapoosa County,

Alabama and let them read – all 41,360 of them. But that still won’t solve my problem since

six percent of the population of both counties are too young to read. So now we lack 10,281

readers, which happens to be the population of Yazoo Mississippi. We could just bring them

in by bus, but, according to their internet site, 481 of these fine folks are in jail and can’t

“get away”, so to speak. Now, not wanting to say something that I can’t substantiate, I can

ask all of the 481 residents of Warm Springs to get over here and help us read. As it turns

out, 52 of those are in rehab at the Roosevelt Warm Springs Rehab Center recovering from

a hip replacement and can’t make the trip. Well, that leaves 52 readers, which is the exact

population of Fish Lake, Minnesota – no babies, prisioners or infirms. They can all ride in

one bus and that’s just about what it would take for me to be honest about those readership

numbers.

All you need to measure the pressure of the air in all � ve of your tires is a simple and inexpensive tire pressure gauge. Adding air is a li� le more complicated than before be-cause nowadays you have to buy air from that li� le kiosk at the convenience store where you buy your gas. No longer do we have the traditional gas station where the a� endant or the driver could check and � ll the tires right at the pump or at that nasty machine and kinked hose around back. If you use a repair shop regularly, they will usually check your tires for you and adjust the tire pressure if necessary if you ask them. But having the knowledge and the equipment to do it your-self is the best way to accomplish the task.

First, you need an air pressure gauge. Any of the stores that sell auto supplies will have a variety of gauges. You can buy a pencil shaped gauge for about $3.00. � ey are easy to store, easy to use, but not the most accurate way to measure air pressure. Or you could buy a dial gauge for about $8.00 that is easier to use, and a lot more accurate. You could also buy a larger, more functional gauge for about $40 but you really don’t need to unless you have special needs, such as for a trailer, an RV, or other vehicle that needs higher pressures or very accurate readings. Digital gauges are about the easiest to read and cost upwards of $10. Remember, you get what you pay for but be sure to get what you need.

All that’s involved in checking the air pressure in your tires is to � nd the valve stem sticking out from the rim of each wheel, un-screw the valve cap, apply the gauge to the valve stem and read the air pressure. You do need to make sure that you get a good read-ing, accomplished by practice and technique. Make sure you don’t hear any air escaping, indicating that you don’t have the gauge head on the valve stem squarely enough to prevent escaping air. Make sure the air in each tire is very close to the amount that the label on the door post says it should be. If it isn’t, get to an air supply within a reasonable period of time and add air. You will almost always need to add air, seldom need to let it out unless you over� ll the tire while you are

adding air. Most tire gauges have a bu� on that lets you bleed air out of the tire. If not, push in the li� le pin in the center of the stem and bleed o� a li� le air and then recheck the pressure. � e li� le valve stem caps are always rolling away or otherwise ge� ing lost. Yet they are an important part of keeping the tire stem clean and operating properly. If you lose them or don’t even have them on your car, buy a pack at an auto parts store and keep them where they belong.

What is most important in tire pressure management is that the tires are close to the correct amount. A pound or so won’t make a great deal of di� erence. � e important thing to watch is that a tire is not grossly over or under in� ated and that the tires on each end of the car are in� ated to the recommended pressure and the air pressure in each of them is the same. Some vehicles may require dif-ferent air pressures in the front tires than in the rear ones. � e engineers � gured that out, so comply. For example, the label may specify that the front tires should be in� ated to 36 pounds per square inch (PSI) pressure and the rear tires to 34 PSI

Gary SikesRecently I had a chance to talk for

a good while with Clint Wade who is starting his 6th year as the head man for East Coweta. As everybody who follows high school football knows, the Indians had their � rst losing season in some 20 plus years last year with a regular season of 4 wins vs 6 losses. However, they did manage to make the state play-o� s. Be-lieve me, Wade is as upset over this fact as anybody and more so than most. “I have been coaching over 25 years and this was the � rst losing season I have ever gone through and it was miserable.” Wade has made some adjustments to his coaching sta� in hopes that they will get be� er. (I will have interviews and bios on them in the upcoming weeks). Coach Wade did however have some positive things to say about the scrimmage this past Fri-day night. “We have a ways to go, but we do have some good talent and it seems to be at the spots we need them most.” � e

2 new coaches have made a real positive impact on the players and the rest of the sta� as well as they bring a lot of energy and positive a� itudes to the � eld every day for practice. “I am glad to have them both on board” Wade says and he is ex-cited about the Summer plans they have for the team and the upcoming season as well. What to look for from the Indians this Fall. Bryce Gemmel will be under center with his favorite target Markel Boston with him again. Last year as a sophomore Gemmel threw for over 1500 yards with 8 tds. Tailback Weylin Orr is expected to anchor the running game. On the � ip side of the line � e Indians are going to young and lost the services of Junior Tristan Mann to a knee injury. However they still have Jay McKnight covering the middle for them and he should be a college prospect this Fall.

Fall Color PlantsSchool has started and we begin to think of foot-

ball, fall festivals, Powers Crossroads, the County Fair, and a fresh look for our gardens. There are a host

of plants ~ trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, and vines that show wonderful blooms or foli-ages or berries for September to November. Now is a good time to take stock and decide what to add in our gardens. Visit plant nurseries and public gardens to see plants in their Fall splendor.

Trees with lovely fall color include: Dogwood, Japanese Maple, Ginkgo, Service Berry, Redbud, Crepe Myrtle, Sassafras, and Sumac and Crab Apple.

Shrubs with beautiful foliage and hips or berries are: Oakleaf Hydrangea, Viburnum, Callicarpa, Nandina, and Ninebark, Pyra-cantha, Japanese Barberry and Forsythia and Rosa Rugosa.

Vines to use for fall color such as Boston Ivy, Virginia Creeper, Bittersweet, Sweet Autumn Clematis, and Silver Lace Vine add a nice vertical touch as does Climbing Hydrangea.

Perennials offer so many choices for fall gardens: Sedum, Rudbeckia, Swamp Sunflowers, Goldenrod, Artemesia, Chrysanthe-mums, Dahlias, Asters, Blue Salvia, Russian Sage, Crocus, Spider Lily, Joe Pye Weed, Yar-row, Queen Anne’s Lace, Toad Lily, Japanese Anemone and Blackeyed Susans.

Ornamental grasses look wonderful now too.

Annuals to add to fall designs include: Ornamental Kale, Ornamental Cabbage, Pansies, Violas, and Snapdragons, and lettuces and parsley.

Produce offers a chance to decorate in our fall gardens, on porches and decks and steps. Pumpkins of all sizes and in several colors are available. Gourds and squashes come in many interesting shapes and col-ors. Corn stalks, okra pods, cattails, and colorful berries and foliages can add color, texture and contrast.

The possibilities are endless!

Auxiliary Brings Healing GardenTo Piedmont Newnan Hospital

Piedmont Newnan Hospital has received a pledge of $150,000 from the Piedmont Newnan Auxiliary to build a healing garden near the hospital’s main entrance. The healing garden will serve as a place of reflection to patients and visitors at Piedmont Newnan.

“A healing garden is the perfect addition to our hospital, which is already beautiful,” said Nathan Nipper, vice president and COO of Piedmont Newnan. “It will serve as a place of refuge and relaxation while patients undergo treatment here. We greatly appreciate the Auxiliary for this incredible gift.”

The Piedmont Newnan Auxiliary presented $100,000 of its pledge to hospital officials in July 2013 and will raise the remaining funds for the healing garden through fundraising events such as the annual Christmas Tour of Homes on December 6 from 4 to 9 p.m. The Piedmont Newnan Auxiliary is just one of a number of community members and organi-zations who have supported the development of the garden.

Inspired by the local rivers and water sources, the garden’s design reflects the element of water - a symbol of the celebration of life and health. A stream of water will weave through the garden, starting at a source near the front of the hospital and ending at a reflection pool.

Greenery and flowering trees will surround the reflection pool along with benches for visitors to relax and listen to the flowing water. The garden will feature multiple seated areas that can serve both groups as well as individuals. Plants surrounding the seated areas will elicit subtle aromas with healing properties.

As a not-for-profit hospital, Piedmont Newnan Hospital and its affiliated organizations rely on donations like the one given by the Auxiliary in order to offer many programs and services to the community. For more information about the hospital or to make a dona-tion, visit piedmontnewnan.org.
