Director’s Message

Manager’s Message

Dear Carbondale Citizens, Town of Carbondale recognizes that building new recreational facilities, offering new pro-grams, and facilitating community-wide special events improves our way of life and attracts out-of-town visitors impacting our local economy. With this in mind, the Town is breaking ground this summer on a professionally designed and constructed off-road community bike park to replace the home-made features currently in place at North Face Park. Through funding from a $60,000 GOCO grant, the bike park will be the first in the Roaring Fork Valley to have a terrain-oriented course devoted to bike dirt jumps, a mountain bike skills course, a fitness pump track, with a spectator seating area to watch all the action. Also this summer while watching the Carbondale Wild West Rodeo, you’ll notice a remark-able improvement with new energy efficient lighting installed that triples the light levels from the old system. The project was funded in part through a generous $50,000 grant from Garfield County. And finally this summer, work will be getting underway on developing a new 10-year Parks, Recreation & Trails Master Plan. Funded through a $45,000 GOCO grant, this master plan will uti-lize community surveys and citizen input to guide town decision making for acquisition and develop-ment of future parks, trails, programs, and recreation and athletic facilities for the decade ahead. It’s the hope and desire that these new recreational facilities recently built, and the projects proposed and planned for the future, will help to improve our quality of life in making Carbondale such a desirable place to live. Please feel free to call or stop by my office if you have questions or wish to discuss recreational issues involving you, your family, or your community.

Jeff JackelRecreation Director

I have been on this planet for quite some time now, but that doesn’t mean that I am unable to be suckered into a good April Fools joke. The recreation industry is governed by a very respectable & professional organization called the National Parks & Recreation Association. They have recently launched their new mission, guided by the following three pillars: Conservation, Health & Wellness, and Social Equity. So on April 1st, (should have been my first clue) their monthly e-mail blast was proud to announce the completion, with serveral well known internet companies, of the worlds first “Virtual Park”, which perfectly epitomized the three pillars. 1. Conservation-”Being a virtual park means that no natural resources were used, nor will they be needed in the future for upkeep and maintenance.” 2. Health & Wellness-”The various activities available in this park require complex clicking and visual tracking, and alot of mousing around and touch screen swiping. It also works on mobile devices, so the park can be accessed from virtually anywhere” 3. Social Equity-”This park is not only available to all Americans, but it is available to people from around the world, providing a great example of social equity in Parks & Recreation.” My curiousity was piqued and I was ready to go fly a virtual kite. I was then directed to a hyperlink to check it out for myself for the grand opening of the “Virtual Park”. When clicked, I was redirected to a picture of a bunch of kids laughing (seemingly at me) and playing in a park (a real one) the holding up the following message: “April Fools, now get outside and play!”
