CÁDIZ PROVINCE & GIBRALTAR 3 PERFECT DAYS DAY 1 // CÁDIZ IMMERSION Cádiz is a city that rewards those who linger. With extraordinary monuments, high- above-it-all vantage points, fantastic places to eat, beaches and a fun-loving spirit renowned throughout Spain, a day is an absolute minimum for soaking up its charms. Stay at Hotel Argantonio (p385) for a sophisticated retreat and don’t miss the views from the Torre Tavira (p115) and the cathedral’s Torre de Poniente (p114). At ground level, the gorgeous Plaza de la Catedral and the Barrio de la Viña (p114) are both focal points for much of the city’s life. DAY 2 // HEAD FOR THE HILLS The coastal hinterland of Cádiz province is a world away from the clamour of city life. A drive from Arcos de la Frontera (p133) to Vejer de la Frontera (p140) via the Sierra de Grazalema takes in some of Andalucía’s most picturesque mountain scenery and prettiest whitewashed villages. At either end of the drive, Arcos and Vejer are hill towns par excellence, while the high country en route is like a stereotype brought to life of Andalucía’s rural beauty. DAY 3 // SOAK UP THE COAST The Costa de la Luz (p140) is one of Spain’s most unspoiled coastlines with a range of sights and activities. Gibraltar (p148) and Tarifa (p142) provide the urban charms and stunning views across the Strait of Gibraltar to Africa, but there are also Roman ruins and kilometre upon kilometre of white sandy beaches, especially at Zahara de los Atunes (p142), Los Caños de Meca (p142) and El Palmar (p142). © Lonely Planet

GETTING AROUND

Avoid driving into Cádiz, especially in summer when the one road in and out is clogged with

slow-moving traffic. Instead leave the car in El Puerto de Santa María’s ridiculously cheap

waterfront parking station and catch the ferry. If you really must drive in any of the coastal

towns in summer, do so between 2pm and 5pm when sun-loving locals are either eating or

having a siesta. The route through the Sierra de Grazalema (see the Driving Tour, p137) is one

of Andalucía’s loveliest drives.
