Inspired by Christ, the Malvern Tradition invites each individual to grow and give in a family distinguished by respect, challenge, service and exceptional love.

Our HistoryMalvern Prep is the direct continuation of the academy program founded in 1842 by the Augustinians as the preparatory school for what is now Villanova University. The Augustinian community purchased the farm called Belle-Aire in January 1842, to establish a college and monastery under the patronage of St. Thomas of Villanova. During the next year, Rev. John O’Dwyer, the first president, worked tirelessly to get the school up and running, and traveled to Europe in search of qualified faculty. On St. Augustine’s Day, August 28, 1843, the School’s

first Mass was celebrated; and the seven students that year were all under the age of 16. The original academy building, built in 1848, is now called Alumni Hall, and stands just behind the Chapel at Villanova.Villanova did not grant its first college degree until 1857. As the school grew and modern education began to take its present form, a distinction grew between the “academy boys,” the “college boys,” and the “seminarians.” In 1901, the academy was named “St. Nicholas of Tolentine Academy,” and in 1922, the college program was expanded. The decision was made to move the academy program from the college campus. About the same time, the Rosengarten family of Malvern planned to sell part of its holdings located on Warren Avenue and Paoli Pike. Thus in 1922, because of the Augustinian need and the availability of 143 acres in historic Chester County, the academy relocated to its current setting. The academy changed its name to “Villanova Preparatory School” in the early 1920’s, which began the gradual phasing out of the old academy. The school was soon renamed Malvern Preparatory School to reflect its geographical location and give the school its own identity. Malvern Prep graduated its first class in 1927. Located northwest of Malvern Prep’s property is the site of the Paoli Massacre during the Revolution, making it a central point for historical interest. Malvern Prep owned the 40-acre landmark until 2000 when it was purchased and preserved as a National Historic property. Although only two buildings on the Rosengarten estate could be used for school purposes, Austin Hall (original farmhouse) and the St. Augustine Friary (farm building), they were more than ample in providing classroom and living space for the predominantly boarding student body of 19 and the original faculty of three Augustinians and a layman.Today, the School’s 104-acre campus has 15 buildings, including the state-of-the-art Duffy Arts Center, a 17,000 square-foot building that houses a Steinway, a musical technology studio, a ceramic studio with five kilns and 15 pottery wheels, a 600-seat theater, computer graphics lab, a wet dark room for traditional and photography, gallery space and classrooms. DiversityMalvern Preparatory School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, national or ethnic origin in its educational, admission or financial aid policies. As a leading Independent Catholic school of the 21st century, Malvern Prep knows it is imperative to embrace and strengthen diversity. As an Augustinian school, we labor to build a genuinely diverse student body, faculty and staff, with a special emphasis on including the underrepresented. At Malvern, underrepresented students most frequently come from ethnic minorities or low-income families. These students enhance the Malvern community through their unique experiences, perspectives and talents. For faculty and staff, we strive to include a variety of ethnicities and both genders. In the tradition of St. Augustine, we will make intentional use of diverse membership to see the Truth, in Unity, buoyed by Love.

Augustinian Values of Truth, Unity and LoveOur mission and values are grounded in Truth, Unity and Love. We use our mission and values as the foundation of a Malvern Prep education that develops life lasting brotherhood throughout our student body. Our students learn the importance of giving to others in our Christian Service Program providing volunteer opportunities at local, national and

international service organizations. Our students cultivate a commitment to serving others and deep generosity that continues to grow long after graduation.

Believing an education is not complete without exposure to the outside of a classroom, Malvern has a full array of artistic, athletic and extra-curricular offerings for its student body.

Caring Faculty and CommunityFoundations for learning begin in a family atmosphere. With approximately 650 students and 80 faculty, our School is small enough for educators to really get to know, challenge and support our students. At Malvern, parents and faculty partner to guide students and ensure their success.

WELCOMEMalvern Prep is honored to welcome teams, coaches, fans, and families to the 2016 PAISAA State Wrestling Tournament, as the event returns to the east for the next two years. Good luck and good sportsmanship to all the squads, their coaches, and their fans.

SPORTSMANSHIP Good sportsmanship is an important component of wrestling and the way in which our athletes, our coaches, and our fans approach competition. The manner in which our sport is represented is far more important than wins and losses. Good sportsmanship is about respect – respect for oneself, for teammates and coaches, for opponents, for contest officials and for the sport itself. PAISAA and the PAISWT board thank you for meeting this high standard during this weekend’s

TOURNAMENT HISTORY Independent schools in Pennsylvania conducted the first official state wrestling tournament in 1988. However, the roots of the event reach back over 50 years to the inception of the Episcopal Wrestling Tournament (EWT) and the vision of Episcopal Academy coach John Brennan and Mr. Fitz Dixon. The EWT served as the premier tourney for Philadelphia area private schools for 25 years, beginning in 1946. A coalition of private schools eventually hosted the event, and the name transformed into the Philadelphia Area Private School Invitational Wrestling Tournament

(PAPSWIT). Growth and fluctuation followed, with a period when schools from outside Pennsylvania were invited to the tournament as well.

Eventually, Pennsylvania coaches, fans, and schools felt that the tourney had lost its original focus and needed a change. The increased level of competition of teams within the state was recognized, and a new concentration brought needed definition to the PAPSWIT. Recognizing that over 40 independent school wrestling teams existed in Pennsylvania at that time, an official state tournament for private schools was proposed by the PAPSWIT committee.

Page 29: cdn1.sportngin.com › attachments › document › … · Web viewPennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association State Wrestling Tournament Malvern Preparatory School is honored

Valley Forge Military Academy captured the team title at the first Pennsylvania Independent School Wrestling Tournament (PAISWT)held in 1988, and the event, which has often featured national level talent, has flourished since that time. The tournament, which also serves as a qualifier for the National Prep Wrestling Tournament, became part of the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association (PAISAA) slate of state events in 2011. Although a PAISAA event, a special exemption is provided for the inclusion of teams from the Midwest that do not have a qualifier for National Preps. Thus, Western Reserve Academy (OH) and Lake Forest Academy (Il) have been added in recent years.

RONALD K. NELSON AWARDAs a coach, Ronald K. Nelson taught the importance of teamwork through wrestling. It is in his honor that an award was created to symbolize all that Coach Nelson exemplified to the sport of wrestling. Ron Nelson began coaching wrestling at ANC in 1958. Students found him to be a highly principled man, devoted to instilling the importance of dedication to the team as being more important than any one individual’s personal achievement. The success of the team was supported by the hard work and dedication of the individual. This focus on teamwork was consistent throughout his coaching of football, lacrosse, cross country, and wrestling. Throughout his teaching and coaching career at the Academy Ron served his country in the Marine Corps Reserves and is a retired Two Star General. This award is presented to the wrestler accumulating the most team points in the PAISAA Tournament over a four year period.
