ALWAYS START WITH THE BASICS
BEAUTYCLASSIC
here are so many beautiful trends in fine jewelry this year, from long drop earrings to rainbow-colored gemstone bracelets, that
it’s never been more possible to make a bold statement. But sometimes a bold statement is not what is called for. Sometimes just
the basics will do — the foundational classics that demonstrate you have good taste and plenty of style, no matter where you are or
what the occasion. The great thing about the classics is that they can be updated periodically, becoming classics-with-a-twist — a
strand of pearls with a few gemstones added or a stud earring with a small drop or jacket — and they still never go out of style. Here
are few of this year’s must-have modern classics.
EARRINGS Earrings at their most basic are diamond or pearl studs, and what could be more elegant? Some designers add small drops or jackets,
but the classic stud is the essential ingredient. This year, classic doorknockers are back in style in a range of sizes, and, of course,
hoops are a favorite standby. This year, they are set with gems that hang on loops or chains from the hoop. Hoops are also being set
with diamonds on the inner side as well as the outer, so the sparkle of gems shows from every angle.

NECKLACES The diamond solitaire necklace
(DSN, for short) somehow offers a big
look, despite its diminutive size. It’s the
perfect finishing touch for virtually any
outfit, from the beach to the ballroom.
For a timeless femme look, a strand
of Mikimoto pearls, is as elegant as it
gets. For a more subtle look, stations of
diamonds, or diamonds-by-the-yard as
they are sometimes called, are a great
choice for everyday wear.
BRACELETS Ever since Chrissy Evert dubbed her riviera-style diamond line bracelet
the tennis bracelet, it has been a classic in the lexicon of American
jewelry. Today, it can be set with alternate gems, including sapphires
or emeralds or even a rainbow of colored gems. Stacking also works: the
only thing better than one bracelet or bangle is a whole armful!

RINGS Wedding and engagement rings are the epitome of tradition,
but women have never been comfortable neglecting the right
hand, and that is why the jewelry industry celebrates the Right
Hand Ring. It could be an embellished wide band, a diamond
pavé style (in contrast to the solitaire on the left hand), or a
one-of-a-kind ruby, sapphire, or emerald masterpiece — the
three gemstones that will never, ever go out of style.

The Speedmaster Moonwatch Grey Side of the Moon
expresses Omega’s outer space connection, with a
meteorite dial made from a solid piece of ancient,
extra-terrestrial stone. Each piece of meteorite
in this series has been acid etched to reveal its
unique natural pattern beneath: no two are exactly
alike. The 44.25 mm case is grey ceramic with a
18k Sedna gold bezel with a silicon nitride ring
and a brushed Ceragold tachymeter scale. It is
a chronograph with a 60-minute and 12-hour
recorder at 3 o’clock and a small seconds subdial
at 9 o’clock. The elite movement, Omega’s
Co-Axial automatic Caliber 9300, can be seen
through a beveled sapphire crystal caseback.
The strap is grey leather with a titanium clasp.
The Omega Speedmaster is one of the most iconic watches
ever created. Introduced in 1957, the triple-register chronograph
and the bezel tachymeter scale made it the ideal sports watch
both aesthetically and functionally, the perfect timepiece to
reinforce Omega’s position as the official timekeeper of the
Olympic Games. The Omega Speedmaster was also the first
watch in space, and in 1969, the first watch to be worn
on a NASA space mission to the moon – on the wrist
of astronaut Buzz Aldrin. The Speedmaster has been
continuously upgraded over the years, and today’s newest
models have been toughened up with indestructible
materials, including ceramic, titanium and even
meteorite, with state-of-the-art movements. Here are
some of our favorite new models.

The Seamaster is another iconic Omega model, often referred to
as the “James Bond” watch because it has been worn by 007 in several
films. The Planet Ocean is a professional diver’s version of the Seamaster,
with water resistance to 600 meters (about 2,000 feet) thanks to a screw-in
caseback with special gaskets and a helium escape valve. The chronograph
model pictured here contains a Co-Axial Master Chronometer movement,
Caliber 9900, which has passed the eight rigorous tests set by METAS (The
Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology). The case is stainless steel and Sedna gold,
with a blue Ceragold diving scale and a blue ceramic dial.
The Speedmaster Moonwatch Dark Side of the Moon is Omega’s
tribute to the first orbit of the Moon, during which astronauts
had Omega watches strapped to their wrists. This Dark Side of
the Moon is an all-black model made mostly of ceramic. The
44.25 mm case is machined from a single block of black
ceramic. The bezel insert is brushed ceramic with a matt
chromium nitride tachymeter scale. The dial is polished
black ceramic with blackened applied subdial rings at
3 and 9 o’clock and 18k white gold applied indexes.
Even the folding clasp on the nylon strap is made
of ceramic. It is a two-register chronograph
containing Omega’s Co-Axial Caliber 9300. The
central seconds chronograph hand has a red tip
for readability.
The Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional
Chronograph is a modern version of the historic
tri-register chronograph models that were part of
all six lunar missions, and represents the brand’s
adventurous pioneering spirit. The black dial, with
central chronograph seconds, a small seconds subdial,
30-minute totalizer and 12-hour register, is covered by
a hesalite crystal. It contains Caliber 1861, an enhanced
version of the legendary manual wound movement in
the watch that was worn on the Moon. It comes in a
special Moonwatch presentation box that contains a NATO
strap, a strap for astronauts, a tool to change the bracelet and
a book highlighting the Speedmaster’s adventures.
Omega dedicates some of the proceeds from sales of Planet Ocean watches to
support the GoodPlanet Foundation, which aims to raise awareness of environmental
issues. Omega is a partner in the organization’s endeavour to produce high-quality films
about ecology.

ongines, one of Switzerland’s oldest watch
companies, celebrated its 185th anniversary last
year with an all-new Record collection. This
year the Record, the company’s most classic,
elegant model, has been upgraded with
COSC-certified automatic movements.
The automatic movement, made by
Longines, has a silicon balance spring, a
lightweight material that is corrosion-resistant,
anti-magnetic and unaffected by normal
temperature variations and atmospheric pressure.
This means greater accuracy. The movement, Caliber
888.4, has a 64 hour power reserve. It is a COSC-
certified chronometer, which means it has passed a series
of stringent tests that measure accuracy, reliability and
durability by the Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute.
In order to showcase this new movement, the 40 mm stainless steel automatic
model features an open caseback covered by a sapphire crystal with several layers of
anti-reflective coating. It is decorated with perlage and Geneva stripes. The dial is classic
and minimalist in design, with elegant Roman numerals and blued hands, including a
central seconds hand. There is a discreet date window in the 3 o’clock position.
It is available in a smaller, 30 mm version with a different movement, the automatic Caliber
592.4, which is also COSC certified, and has a 40 hour power reserve. The dial on the smaller
model is mother-of-pearl with diamond markers, including two diamonds at the 12 o’clock
position. It has the same blued hands and discreet date window at 3 o’clock as the larger version.
In the full collection, there are four sizes (26, 30, 38.5 and 40 mm), with seven dial options
for women and six dial options for men. The cases are steel, including a diamond-set steel case
with two dial options for women — fitted on a steel bracelet or alligator watch strap.

atek Philippe is known as the world’s most elite maker of
complicated timepieces, which rank among the most coveted
watches at auctions worldwide. What many don’t know is that Patek
Philippe is also a master of the metiers d’art, watchmaking’s artisanal
crafts, including the art of enameling. Although this expertise is most
often showcased in its dome table clocks, it is occasionally used on
rare or extraordinary wristwatches. Patek Philippe’s World Time
watches with cloisonné enameled dials are legendary, including
the newest piece, the Ref. 5531R.
The Ref. 5531R is a world first in that it combines a world
timer function with a minute repeater function that strikes
hours, quarter hours, and minutes on demand for local
time in 24 world cities. Until now, minute repeaters with
a world time function could only chime home time. The
Ref. 5531R strikes the local time zone represented by the
city aligned with the 12 o’clock position, shown by the
hour and minute hands. It contains a new movement,
Caliber R27HU, with a patent pending for the new striking
mechanism. Acoustics were enhanced by attaching the gongs
to the caseband instead of the mainplate. The dial is cloisonné
enamel, executed by Anita Porchet, Switzerland’s foremost
enamel artist and a longtime Patek Philippe collaborator. The
scene on the dial depicts the Lavaux winegrowing region along
the northern shores of Lake Geneva in Switzerland, a UNESCO
World Heritage site. It is Patek Philippe’s first enameled minute
repeater. It was originally introduced last year with a dial depicting
the New York City skyline, as part of the Patek Philippe Art of
Watches exhibition in New York City in August 2017.

ROLEX AWARDS FOR ENTERPRISE AND THE ROLEX
MENTOR AND PROTÉGÉ ARTS INITIATIVE
b y C A R O L B E S L E Rdesigner spotlight
The Rolex Awards for Enterprise was established in 1976 to
support people who are reshaping the world with their innovative
thinking and dynamism, working on projects that somehow
improve life on our planet. Laureates, who range in age from
24 to 74, have carried out projects benefiting millions of
people in more than 60 countries. They have done this by
implementing technological and scientific innovations,
protecting endangered species and ecosystems, exploring
new frontiers, reviving time-honored practices, and
protecting forgotten peoples. Projects have also provided
safe, affordable water, energy, shelter, food, medicine, and
health care in developing countries.
Recipients, who are awarded a cash grant to further
their initiatives, have included an ophthalmologist bringing
eye care to sub-Saharan Africa, a biologist working to protect
giant manta rays, a scientist initiating conservation efforts
along Chile’s Patagonia coast, a biomedical engineer developing
a soft robotic suit to help the physically impaired and an engineer
bringing water to the desert landscapes of the Himalayas.
“The Rolex Awards were designed to support those whose own
spirit of enterprise mirrored the enterprising spirit on which the company
was founded,” says Rebecca Irvin, head of Philanthropy at Rolex. “The idea
is to encourage new ventures rather than reward past achievements, and
to recognize people who were doing things differently, exploring beyond
boundaries and bringing often unconventional and ground-breaking ideas to
help change the world into the mainstream. The program reflects the Rolex
brand values of quality, ingenuity, and individual achievement.”

The Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative,
launched in 2002, brings together emerging artists
with masters in architecture, dance, film, literature,
music, theatre, and the visual arts for a year of intensive
collaboration. The aim is to help ensure that artistic
excellence is passed on to the next generation. Mentors
each receive an honorarium, and Protégés each receive
a cash grant during the mentoring period, in addition
to funds to cover travel and other major expenses. At
the end of the mentoring period, Rolex invites the
participants and guests to honor the achievements of
the mentors and protégés at a public celebratory event.
Some examples of achievements through the
program include a new novel, a new stage production,
a career dancing with the mentor’s company and a
collaborative artwork created with the mentor. Once
the mentoring period ends, the protégé becomes a
fellow of the Rolex Arts Initiative and is eligible to
apply for further funding to support the creation of a
new work, a publication, a performance, or a public
event. Rolex fellows have been appointed as the artistic
directors of major theatre companies, have had their
work represented in leading international exhibitions
such as the Venice Art Biennale and the International
Architecture Exhibition, and have been named Poet
Laureate of the United States.

here are so many superlatives used to describe
diamonds, but what one rarely hears is that your
diamond jewelry should say something. It ought to
announce itself by what it does, how it performs, how it
sustains, both in design and quality. You shouldn’t need
gemological training to know when diamond jewelry
is doing something magical.
That is the case with C.D.Peacock Signature.
We could talk about the die-struck manufacturing
process. We could point to the ideal-cut diamonds
that are used or the perfect calibration that ensures
that all diamonds are set exactly where they are
supposed to be, but what really matters is that you
can see the difference and feel the difference.
We are proud to put our name on a product
manufactured in the U.S., exclusively for C.D.Peacock
that upholds the highest standards of craftsmanship in
a brand designed to impress on day one and for decades
thereafter.
Leonardo da Vinci said, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication,”
and C.D.Peacock Signature is a fine example of that sentiment.
The brand is curated to meet the needs in a woman’s jewelry
wardrobe for the core diamond essentials. The classic styles in
rings, pendants, earrings, and bracelets are designed to maximize
diamond performance and are perfect for both special occasions
and everyday wear.
With a strong emphasis on comfort, including rounded ring-
shanks and split-shared prongs, this collection also eliminates
any possibility of the uncomfortable irritations and rashes that
sometimes occur with 18kt white-gold. C.D.Peacock Signature
is made with a palladium alloy, instead of the frequently used
nickel-alloy, more commonly found in white gold. You will
never have to remove your ring or earrings because of skin
irritations with Signature.
And finally, if you want to make your own personal statement,
ask our team about having a personal message — in your own
hand-writing — inside your Signature ring.

MIKIMOTOA LUSTROUS MILESTONE
THE ORIGINAL PEARL COMPANY CELEBRATES ITS 125TH ANNIVERSARY
eing in business for 125 years is an impressive achievement
for any company, but for Mikimoto, it is a particularly
momentous occasion since it also represents the anniversary of
the creation of the world’s first cultured pearl. Founder Kokichi
Mikimoto successfully created the world’s first cultured pearls in
1893. Mikimoto marks the occasion with several new collections
that represent both tradition and contemporary design, a fusion that
has kept Mikimoto at the top of the pearl world for more than a
century.
One of the anniversary collections commemorates a famous sash
clip, called the Yaguruma, that Mikimoto displayed at the 1937
International Exposition in Paris. Made in the art deco style, it was
adorned with Akoya cultured pearls and precious stones, and it
represented an innovation that has returned today as a major trend
in fine jewelry: it was convertible, with 12 interchangeable settings
allowing it to be disassembled and reassembled to form completely
different pieces, including brooches and hair ornaments. The
commemorative collection includes a belt with strands of Akoya
cultured pearls centered with a clasp made of diamonds, Akoya
pearls, quartz, and mother-of-pearl. There is a matching bracelet
made of Akoya pearls, quartz, and mother-of-pearl, as well as
pendants made of Akoya pearls, diamonds, and enamel.

The Praise to Nature collection captures the spirit of the elements —
land, sea and sky — with designs that resemble natural motifs such as
flowers and petals. The designs combine South Sea and Akoya pearls with
diamonds, emeralds, pink and blue sapphires, and aquamarines. Les Pétales
Place Vendôme introduces simple modern designs inspired by a romantic,
cosmopolitan Parisian scene: rose petals floating gracefully to the ground at
Place Vendôme. White South Sea and Akoya cultured pearls are enveloped
in delicate diamond rose petals.
It has never been enough
for Mikimoto to simply harvest
the world’s most beautiful pearls.
“To wear Mikimoto is to reflect the purity of the ocean…the mystery
of creation...and to know you are adorned with the finest cultured
pearls in the world.”
It has never been enough for Mikimoto to simply harvest the world’s most beautiful pearls. From the
beginning, the goal of Kokichi Mikimoto was to create fine jewelry worthy of the magnificence of natural
pearls and to “adorn the necks of all women of the world with pearls.” Mikimoto has kept this promise for one
and a quarter centuries. Today, the company is still inventing and reinventing pearl jewelry, from traditional
strands to modern designs. As Mikimoto says: “To wear Mikimoto is to reflect the purity of the ocean…the

ucci is on track to become the go-to brand for millennials
this year, with some of the boldest and most contemporary fine
jewelry designs of the season. Trendy ear jackets, serpentine rings,
and bold logo-centric pieces with a vintage ’90s vibe are winners
from the brand’s 2018 collection.
The GG logo watch was a massive success for Gucci during
the 1990s, and the brand is reinforcing its logo collection this year
in both jewelry and watches. The G-Timeless watch sports the
double-G logo both on the strap and hologram-style on the dial.
The GG Running jewelry collection is also back with logos blazing,
this year with some extra bling. The new diamond-encrusted
pieces, all in 18k gold, range from delicate smaller items to large
show pieces set with nearly five carats of diamonds. The pieces can
be stacked or layered together for personalized combinations. The
interlocking G logo is also used in earrings this season, set with
diamonds or pearls, or simply in 18k gold. There are both clip and
pierced styles, along with jacket and studs among the new designs.
Turquoise is enjoying a major revival this year in fine jewelry, and Gucci uses it to depict the eyes on one of its new serpent motif rings
from the Ouroboros collection. Ouroboros symbolizes infinity or wholeness, via a neverending circle, which is represented by the serpent
eating his tail in this collection. The Ouroboros is often associated with introspection and the infinite cycle of nature’s endless creation
and destruction. In this collection, the pieces are embellished with both
gemstones and pavé diamonds, reflecting the unique coloring
of the mythical Ouroboros snake. There are lots of
options in the collection, with five new ring styles
in different widths, including a five-coil ring that
produces a stacking effect. Part of its appeal
is the unique combination of gemstones with
which it is set, including diamonds, black
diamonds, red topaz, and sunset sapphires.
Founded in Florence in 1921, Gucci is one
of the world’s leading luxury fashion brands, with
a reputation for creativity, innovation, and Italian
craftsmanship. Gucci is part of the Kering Group, which owns
a portfolio of luxury, sports, and lifestyle brands.

hoosing an engagement ring is an exciting process that can take you
from romantic to vintage to simple solitaire on the journey to your
perfect ring. Choosing an engagement ring is an important decision. It will be
with you for a lifetime as a symbol of your commitment to each other. Here are
the current trends in engagement rings, along with a few options from the new
2018 collections to get you started.
engaging ideasb y R E B E C C A V E R M A
PLATINUM AND GOLD, A WINNING COMBINATION
Why settle for one metal, when you can have two-tone? Try platinum with
rose gold for a romantic combination, or mix white gold with a hint of yellow for
more impact. Incorporating different colors in your engagement ring will not only
personalize your ring but also give you the confidence to pair your engagement ring
with your favorite pieces, no matter what color the metal.
EAST-WEST STYLE
Easy to identify, this ring is an updated version of a traditional engagement
ring. Instead of having the diamond set in the usual vertical fashion, this ring
features the stone horizontally, hence the east-west name. This style looks great
with a marquis, oval, or any oblong diamond or colored stone of your choice. Your
friends will do a double take as you rack up the likes on your profile.

RING IT’S ALL IN THE ROCKS
Your style is unique in what you wear, so make sure you reflect your
personality in your engagement ring. Some feel princess cut diamonds are
more modern and contemporary, while round brilliant cut diamonds are
classic and timeless. Marquise and oval cut diamonds can elongate the
look of your fingers, and three-stone rings give you a big look. Let’s face
it, all diamonds are beautiful, and there are no rules, so choose something
that suites your style. There are other ways to wear a unique gem. If
you’re not sure you’re a diamond kind of girl, consider a morganite,
aquamarine, or — like the Duchess of Cambridge — a sapphire. This
is your ring that you plan to wear for a lifetime, so choose a stone that
speaks to you.
FANCIES FOR A FRESH LOOK
Fancy cut and off-round shaped diamonds are fashionable, including
emerald, marquise, princess, and baguette diamonds. Ovals, however, are
the most popular; not only are they a unique alternative to round, but they
seem larger than square or round cut diamonds of the same size. And the
elongated style makes the fingers look longer.
HALOS ENHANCE THE DIAMOND
Halos have been dominating engagement ring styles for
a few years now. They are loved because the halo creates a
big look, making a center solitaire look much larger. Look for
interesting variations on the halo, including double or triple
halos, or different shapes, such as oval or cushion-shaped halos.
The look is romantic and vintage, and often accompanied by
intricate scrolled engraving on the shank or setting.
STACKING UP THE MEMORIES
Stacking rings is a big trend in both fashion and bridal jewelry.
The beauty of this look begins with your engagement ring and
continues to be cultivated from there. You could combine an
engagement ring with a larger statement band set with many
diamonds. Choose another band to add to your assortment after
each milestone in your life and you can begin to mix and match
them. This could include your first anniversary together or the
birth of a child. The beauty of this look is that it is customizable
and unique to your life, and it is always evolving, becoming
more and more personalized with every new ring introduced.

LeBron James, Brad Pitt, Helena Bonham Carter, Will Smith, and Winona Ryder have all enjoyed excursions to Amanyara Villas.
The ethos of Aman is founded in simple luxury, afforded by an exceptional location
harmoniously blended with a unique environment. The result is a selection of contemporary
and finely tuned resorts that offer an enriching, enlightening, and rewarding lifestyle experience
in which to willingly surrender. It’s a lifestyle centered around shared values and a lust for a
world that excites, shapes, and nourishes.
It is this appetite for pampering and a deep appreciation of the creative and elegant — the way
an Aman responds to the environment, the way light falls on the table or water fills a pool — that
brings kindred spirits to Amanresorts and makes the experience of an Aman villa truly rewarding.

AMANYARA Nestled on an 18,000 acre (7,280 hectare) nature preserve on the Turks
& Caicos Islands in the British West Indies, the resort is a world unto itself.
Stretching for half a mile, Amanyara’s powdery, white-sand beach and its
crystalline turquoise waters frame a gently undulating landscape.
UNPARALLELED TRANQUILITY Amanyara, or “peaceful place,” has
embraced its secluded beachside setting with a
contemporary design that echoes the nuances
of the tropics: soaring ceilings, dramatic
rooflines, secluded sun decks, private gardens,
inviting pools, and tranquil lakes that reflect
its architecture. Pavilions and villas are set
beside ponds, on rugged stone headlands, and
just steps from a fine-sand alabaster beach.
Using timber and glass, the 28 ocean
and lake pavilions, 8 pool pavilions, 2 two-
bedroom pool suites, and 20 private villas are
imbued with graceful tropical modernity.

signature feature. The ceiling structure is evidence of Amanyara’s
architectural richness and attention to detail.
Catering to resort guests and villa owners alike, the resort restaurant,
beach club, and bar each provide a setting of natural beauty in which
service excellence and guests’ privacy is paramount. The 164 ft (50 m)

moments of high pretense — for ladies, an impressive jeweled watch; for men, an impressive complication. Here is a

The square-cased Monaco is TAG Heuer’s
most recognizable watch and the one most
closely associated with the world of auto
racing. Named after the Monaco Grand Prix,
it was worn by Steve McQueen in the 1971
movie Le Mans. Gulf Oil International has
also long been involved in auto racing and was
the sponsor of McQueen in the film, in which
he drove a Gulf-Porsche 917K. This year,
TAG Heuer and Gulf co-designed a special
edition Monaco Gulf to commemorate this
shared heritage. The watch bears the blue and orange stripes of Gulf’s racing colors. The
Gulf logo, along with a vintage Heuer logo, appears on the dial. The crown position on the
left side of the case — where it is less intrusive for drivers gripping the steering wheel — is
signature to the model. It contains the Caliber 11 automatic chronograph movement with
date function, and it is water resistant to 100 meters (about 330 feet).

This year, TAG Heuer celebrates the 55th
anniversary of the Carrera, its best-selling
collection. The model was launched in 1963 as a
tribute to the Carrera Panamericana Rally of the
1950s. It had a distinctive, two-counter dial and a
1/5th of a second scale on the flange and quickly
became a favorite of the racing world. The new
Carrera Chronograph Caliber 16 has some of the
qualities of the original, including the pushers, the
font, and the long, visible markers. The black dial
has contrasting white subdials, including minute
and hour totalizers, as well as small seconds. The
strap is perforated black leather with red stitching
and lining. There is also a version with a blue dial
and a steel bracelet.
TAG Heuer is at the forefront of the trend
toward interchangeable straps, particularly for
ladies’ watches. The recently redesigned Formula
1 Lady collection comes with straps in a choice of
brown, blue, white, red, or black, or stainless steel.
Cases are made of stainless steel, with or without
black PVD coating, in either 32 mm or 35 mm,
with tapered lugs that give it a slightly tonneau
shape. It contains a quartz movement.

atch lovers are notorious for building their collections
by frequently selling some pieces to buy others — even
though there are often regrets in letting some pieces go. It is therefore
important to consider trade-in value when buying a new watch in
the first place. Trade-in value does not mean you get the same price
or a higher price than what you paid for a watch. It means that
it will have some value on the secondary market. There are some
exceptions to this: if you own a limited-series Rolex Paul Newman
Daytona from the 1960s, call the auction house immediately and
get ready for a six- or seven-figure windfall. Otherwise, never buy a
watch strictly as an investment, which can easily end in frustration
and saddle you with a collection you will never enjoy. A watch
with good trade-in value is in good condition and meets certain key
criteria important to a retailer who sells pre-owned watches. Here
are some tips when considering trade-in value.

• Consider the brand. You can never go wrong with a Rolex
or a Patek Philippe. These are the most collectible watches
in the world, and the most sought-after on the secondary
market, whether it’s an auction house or an online pre-
owned dealer. Certain models are more in demand than
others. Go online and do some research.
• Keep it going, and keep it serviced. Like a human muscle,
a watch will atrophy if it is not used. Storing mechanical
watches in an automatic winder is essential, as is regular
maintenance. Keep a record of the watch’s service history.
Servicing a mechanical watch is expensive, and your watch is
more salable if you have kept up with proper care. Check the
service contracts and the warranties before buying to make
sure you can, in turn, offer this as part of your resale package.
• Keep the box and papers that come with the watch. This
not only authenticates the watch but offers a secondary
buyer a complete package. A lot of effort goes into
packaging nowadays, with nice wooden or leather boxes,
detailed manuals, warranty cards, and so on. When you
buy, make sure you’re getting the right box for the watch.
• Make sure the watch can be serviced. There are some
independents and micro-brands out there making
spectacular watches with inventive movements and unique
materials. Most are very limited or one-of-a-kind pieces. But
what happens if these brands aren’t around in a few years?
Can the watch be serviced? Where will the components
come from? Ask before you buy.
• Find out about repair and restoration possibilities before
you buy. Some prestigious watch brands, including Patek
Philippe, Blancpain, Glashütte Original, and Breguet, will
authenticate and restore their watches, but others do not
repair or provide components for vintage pieces.
• Limited editions are a good bet because of the rarity
factor. Some models have waiting lists, and it is no longer
possible to get them from the manufacturer. This may add
to their value on the secondary market. Some collectors go
for transitional pieces — when a brand takes a well-known
collection and upgrades the case size or material or changes
the movement. The models made in the last year before the
changes occurred are considered transitional and sometimes
become collectors’ items.
• Check the secondary market, including pre-owned watch sites and auction
catalogs. You can track what kind of pieces become collector’s items.
• Build a relationship with an authorized retail dealer. This will pay off when
your favorite brand releases a limited edition of which there are only 12 pieces
in the world and you want one. Make sure you have a trade-in-worthy watch
to help close the deal.
• Do not, ever, alter a piece by setting gemstones into it, engraving it, or
changing the movement to one made by a different brand. And don’t have it
serviced by a watchmaker not authorized by that brand. It means the brand
will never service it again, and that will affect the resale value. Keep your
service records. The wrong kind of service can seriously devalue a watch.
Timepieces in the luxury segment are made to last. This is particularly
true of watches made in the past 10 years, when vast technical advances
have been applied to even mass-produced models. As long as a watch is well
maintained, it could last 100 years or more. Buy well and you will never
regret building your collection.
