Introduction

CE 225. Computer Applications 1

The Word AutoCAD is made up of two words “Auto(logo ofcompany)”and CAD “(computer aided design)”.

AutoCAD is 2D and 3D modeling software. It is developed by Autodesk company.

Autodesk is an U.S.A based company. It is widely used in industry for 2D drawing and 3D modeling.

In another way we can say that AutoCAD is a designing course , which isperformed by the help of computer.

Version of AutoCAD

CE 225. Computer Applications 1

AutoCAD software was firstly launched by Autodesk company in Dec. 1982.

It comes in India in 1988.

The first version of AutoCAD was R1 after that R2,R3,R4…………… and so on.

In 2000,Autodesk launched a version of AutoCAD 2000 after that 2001,2002…… so on.

This time, we have the latest version of AutoCAD is 2014,which is launched on 27th march 2013.

Latest version is easy to use and over come the difficulties of old version.

Setting The Workspace

CE 225. Computer Applications 1

Steps to activating the 2d Drafting & Annotation workspace

1. Start AutoCAD

2. Use the default drawing or on the Quick Access toolbar, click NEW.

3. Select acad.dwt (imperial) or acadiso.dwt (metric) as the template file.

4. Click the Workspace settings icon, located at the bottom right corner of the AutoCAD window. Select 2D Drafting & Annotation.

Special Keys

Use the ESC key to cancel all current actions and return to the Command:prompt.

Press the ENTER key following all keyboard input. You also complete manycommands by pressing ENTER.

Pressing the SPACEBAR is equivalent to pressing the ENTER key and is ofteneasier to use.

Pressing the SPACEBAR or ENTER at the Command: prompt repeats the lastcommand used.

Pressing the UP and DOWN arrow keys will cycle through previous commandsused.

The TAB key is especially useful to navigate in a dialog box. You should use theTAB key to move from field to field. Be careful not to press ENTER.

Command Window

CE 225. Computer Applications 1

The command window is normally located at the bottom of theapplication window and docked between the drawing area and status bar.Whether you enter a command manually at the command line or click acommand tool on a toolbar, all commands are passed through andevaluated by the command line.

Working with Files

CE 225. Computer Applications 1

Drawings are created and saved in the DWG drawing file format. Toaccess this data, you must learn how to create a new drawing, save adrawing, and open these file types. Use the Quick Access toolbar tocreate, open, and save new drawings.

Displaying Objects

CE 225. Computer Applications 1

When you use the software, you draw all objectsat full scale. Sometimes you need to view the wholedrawing, sometimes just smaller details. To assistyou in viewing different areas of the drawing, thereare a number of zoom and pan tools. You can easilymagnify small areas of your drawing to provide acloser view or shift the view to a different or largerpart of the drawing.

HOW AutoCAD WORKS

CE 225. Computer Applications 1

• There is a co-ordinate system used in AutoCAD.

• Every drawing shows its co-ordinate.

• In above next slide the line shows its co-ordinate that is ( 9,6 ) and

(-10,-4).

• There is so many commands like copy, move ,rotate ,mirror in 2D,

path array , rectangular array, polar array & more.

• Different types of drawing can be made in the same time by using a

command that is LAYER.

• Using line , arc , circle , rectangle , ellipse & polygon , so many

drawing of different type can be made.

CO-Ordinate System

CE 225. Computer Applications 1

Every object you draw is placed in either the world

coordinate system (WCS) or a user coordinate system (UCS).

When you create 2D geometry, data input is ultimately

passed to the software in the form of Cartesian (x,y) or polar

coordinates (distance, angle). You can either manually enter

these coordinates or infer them by picking a point in the

drawing window.

Page 21: CE 2xx-Lecture-1-1(Course Description and Introduction to AutoCAD )

Cartesian Coordinate Systems

CE 225. Computer Applications 1

The following image illustrates a line drawn from the origin of thecoordinate system 0,0 with its endpoint at the coordinate 4,6.

To specify a Cartesian coordinate, type theX and Y coordinates and press ENTER.Example: 4,6 where X is equal to thedistance from the origin along the X axisand Y is equal to the distance from theorigin along the Y axis.

Page 22: CE 2xx-Lecture-1-1(Course Description and Introduction to AutoCAD )

22

Alghrafy 2016

Polar Coordinate Systems

CE 225. Computer Applications 1

A polar coordinate is a point in the coordinate system that isdetermined by a distance and an angle.

The following illustration shows a line drawn from the origin of thecoordinate system with a length of 7 units and an angle of 45 degrees.

To specify a polar coordinate, type thedistance < angle, example 5<45, whereDistance equals the distance travelledfrom the specified origin point andAngle equals the angle from the X axis.

23

Alghrafy 2016

Polar Angle

CE 225. Computer Applications 1

The default polar angle is measured counter clockwisefrom the zero angle position. The default zero angle is inthe East compass direction.

Example of Cartesian or Polar Coordinate Input

CE 225. Computer Applications 1

The following lines could have been drawn usingCartesian or Polar coordinates. Assuming the startpoint at the red arrow, the command line input forrelative Cartesian or Polar coordinates would be asfollows:

Point 2: @4,0 or @4<0

Point 3: @0,2 or @2<90

Point 4: @-1,0 or @1<180

Creating Basic Objects

CE 225. Computer Applications 1

All drawings consist of basic objects that you create

using basic commands. In this lesson, you learn how

to create objects such as lines, circles, arcs,

rectangles, and polygons. You also learn how to use

the Erase command to erase objects.

Polygon Command

CE 225. Computer Applications 1

Use the Polygon command to create regular polygon geometryby specifying the center point and radius of an imaginary circle,or the start point and endpoint of one of the polygon edges.
