Available in split and non-split versions. The fully

split version enables complete dismounting and

mounting without shaft or propeller removal.

The seal complies with the classification

requirements for 10-15 years interval between shaft

surveys.

All Cedervall sterntube seals are equipped with a

“free-floating” alignment ring. An inner ropeguard

mounted on the rotating alignment ring housing is

available as an optional extra. It protects the seal from

foreign objects such as fishing lines, ropes, wires etc.

that may become entangled in the propeller.

The SeaQual concept, has a revolutionary new feature;

the built in pressure equalizer. SeaQual is the first

sterntube seal, ever, with this kind of device. The pressure

equalizer compensates for the pressure variations that

normally occur in the sterntube.

Cedervall seals have always been designed to tolerate

axial and radial shaft movements normally experienced in

the shaft line. Now, with the SeaQual, we can also accept

and com-pensate pressure pulses that occur. The ability to

ensure that the sterntube is pressurised only by static

pressure from the gravity tank, provides an excellent and

trouble free operation.

SeaQual is equipped with separate sealing faces.

This enables easy mounting and dismounting of

spare parts.

Separate free-floating sealing faces

provide great benefits to the face-to-

face seal principle. Besides acting as

stator the white metal face functions as

a working surface for the newly

developed X-ring. This means that two

sealing surfaces have been combined into

one component, thus reducing the number of

spare parts.

The SeaQual can be made in a fully split execution, which enables

complete dismounting and mounting without shaft or propeller

removal.

The conclusion is that SeaQual represents a lifetime guarantee

against undesired shaft removals.

Bulkhead sealsThe Cedervall bulkhead seal type CBS is an emergency seal that is normally not operating but is engaged automatically in case water appears at either side of a bulkhead, preventing flooding of adjacent compartments.

Intermediate thrust bearingsThe Cedervall Intermediate Thrust Bering is designed as a single collar thrust bearing, specially reinforced to taking the thrust in ahead as well as in astearn direction. The bearing consists of two faces of tilting pads on pivots to transmit the thrust from the shafting to

Intermediate shaft bearingsCedervall intermediate shaft bearings are of self-aligning type, able to compensate for possible misalignment in the shaftline. The bearings are, as standard, prepared for water-cooling and equipped with local thermometer and oil level dipstick.

Hydraulic couplingsTwo standard executions available, flanged- or straight couplings for mounting on cylindrical shafts. The coupling is mounted on a tapered sleeve using high pressure pumps (optional) .

Cedervall forward stern-tube seals are available in fully split, semi-split or non-split versions. All types are fitted with an external cooling system and are available for any shaft diameter.

GeneralThe SQA aft seal is a split oil lubricated face seal for propeller shafts. The face seal principle offers a durable solution, suitable for the harsh working conditions of pro-peller shaft seals.

ExecutionSQA is available in two versions, split and retrofit version, for shaft diameters ranging from 205 to 1004 mm. Both versions comply with requirements for 15 years propeller shaft survey.The exploded view on next page represents the retrofit version where all parts are split to enable installation without removal of the propeller, propeller shaft or rudder. In the split version parts 1, 4 and 7 are manufactured undivided.The materials chosen for SeaQual are selected to achieve maximum performance throughout the entire life of the vessel. SeaQual can also be manufactured to comply with the IWS (in water survey) rules. The IWS version enables measureing of bearing status without drydock the vessel.

SQL non-split oil lubricated aft seal

GeneralThe SQL seal is a non-split oil lubricated face seal for propeller shafts. The face seal principle offers a durable solution, suitable for the harsh working conditions of propeller shaft seals

ExecutionSQL is designed using the experience of the well known SQA for diameters ranging from 205mm to 1004mm, complying with requirements for 15 years propeller survey. The exploded view on next page shows all parts.The materials chosen for SeaQual are selected to achieve maximum performance throughout the entire life of the vessel. To allow measuring of bearing status under water an IWS device is used. The SQL design measurements are identical to the split SQA allowing later upgrading.

MDL non-split oil lubricated forward sterntube seal

GeneralThe MDL forward seal is a non-split oil lubricated face seal for propeller shafts. The seal is equipped with a liquid cooled “free-floating” alignment ring made of cast iron, and with spherical driving pins that reduces the risk for wedging of the seal ring and also reduces the wear from the packing. The MDL type seal together with our aft split type seals complies with the classification requirements for 15 years propeller shaft survey.

CWS split water lubricated forward sterntube seal

GeneralThe CWS forward seal has been designed to provide inboard sealing of propeller shafts with water lubricated bearings. It can be used for all sea and river going vessels for either closed or open lubrication systems.

ExecutionThe design allows significant radial shaft displacement caused by wear in the bearing. The static inflatable secondary seal "pnemostop" allows inspection and repair of the seal with the vessel afloat or with water in the sterntube.

CWS is equipped with a split wear insert that makes repair possible without shaft removal. The housing could as option be supplied in a split version. The split housing version minimizes the required free length in front of the seal from about one extra seal length to just a few centimetres longer than the seal itself.The choice of materials makes the seal fully corrosion resistant provided that the cathodic protection of ship hull and shaft earthing is made professionally.

Sterntube and whitemetal bearings

GeneralCedervall sterntubes with white metal sterntube bearings together with our world known seals forms a combination, which guaranties trouble free operation throughout the entire life of your vessel.

ExecutionCedervall sterntubes are designed for easy installation and trouble free operation. The most common method for installation is “resin-mounting” using one of the well known brands of epoxy. The standard sterntube has 2 white metal bearings with a PT-100 sensor in the aft bearing according to Class rules and customer requirements. Other types of sterntube designs are available to suite the application with 1 up to 3 bearings. All machining and piping for selected seals is done before delivery to minimize installation time.

Optional itemsThe sterntube/bearings can be machined for different types of temperature sensors as well as for different kinds of lubrication from normal static one to forced or hydrostatic one.

Hydraulic couplings

GeneralThe Cedervall hydraulic couplings are designed for easy handling and trouble free operation. They are made of highest quality steel in accordance with existing classification rules and are available in sizes from 100mm and upwards.

ExecutionCedervall standard hydraulic couplings are designed as shown on these pages, several other types for special applications are also available. All types are mounted on cylindrical shafts using tapered sleeves.For connecting two cylindrical shafts the CSR-type is used and for connection to a flange the CSF-type is used. All Cedervall hydraulic flanges are designed to optimize the allowable torque. Installation pressure used is as high as 1200 bar using gearbox oil of ISO VG 100 viscosity.

OptionalFor hollow bored shafts a reinforcement sleeve may be needed in order to optimize the design. Hydraulic pumps and fittings are delivered upon request. For flanged couplings fitted or hydraulic bolts can be delivered upon request.

self aligning intermediate shaft bearing CEDN type

GeneralThe CEDN self aligning intermediate shaft bearing is made of highest quality cast iron with centrifugally cast lead based white metal bearing surface.

ExecutionThe bearing is self-lubricating and prepared for water-cooling. The self-aligning design simplifies installation and reduces wear of the bearing compared to conventional rigid design. The bearings are equipped with an oil level gauge and a thermometer as standard.

Optional itemsTemperature sensor type PT-100 and water cooler can be installed on the bearings as an option. In case of low shaft speed running conditions, the bearings can be equipped with a hydrostatic lubrication system. The oil is then supplied from a separate pump unit containing an electric driven pump and an oil cooler.

ITB ITB type intermediate thrust bearing

GeneralThe Cedervall Intermediate Thrust Bering is designed as a single collar thrust bearing, specially reinforced for taking the thrust in ahead as well as in astearn direction.

ExecutionThe bearing consists of two faces of tilting pads on pivots to transmit the thrust from the shafting to the bearing housing. The stiffness of the design and the position of the supporting legs minimizes the tilting effect with the benefit of low stress levels. The oil circulating and cooling system is available either as an selflubricating system with integrated cooler or as external pump and cooler unit, with all remote monitoring of temperatures and oil flow installed. Workshop tests confirming design and performance under working conditions up to thrusts well above 1500kN are performed and documentations of these test and approval from Classification societies are delivered with bearing.

OptionsFor small and medium sized applications a cost efficient design is to have the bearing designed to have both radial and axial support. Lubrication can be either standard self lubrication or with an external lubrication unit.

For application with high shaft diameters the bearing is delivered only to take the axial forces and with external lubrication as standard.

External Lubrication unitAll sizes of Cedervall ITB bearings can be supplied with external lubrication unit.For bigger sizes this is the standard. The unit works as a forced lubrication system and consists of a tank unit with electric pump with cooler and necessary valves etc. Suitable grade of oil for the system is ISO VG100.

CBS split mechanical bulkhead seal

General

Execution

The Cedervall bulkhead seal type CBS is an emergency seal that is normally not operating but is engaged automatically in case water appears at either side of a bulkhead, preventing flooding of adjacent compartments.

The CBS consists of two major parts; The housing and the rotor, which are both split as standard. The design of the CBS allows the seal to be placed on either side of a bulkhead since the rotor can work in both directions. During normal operation the rotor is moving with the shaft creating almost no friction/heat. In the case of flooding on either side of the bulkhead, the water pressure automatically engagesthe seal so that the rotor is pressed against the housing preventing water from entering. Although almost no wear occurs under normal circumstances, the inspection and possible maintenance is easily accessible.

OptionsThe flange part of the housing is split and can be designed in different sizes allowing large openings in the bulkhead for the flanges of the shaft.

RETROFIT “The first step towards savings”

every day. It is obvious how the split design of the Cedervall SeaQual seal brings along major benefits

for ship-owners and that is met with open arms.

The fully split Cedervall sterntube seal allows the vessel to avoid shaft

withdrawal during dry docking as well as the following work of rudder

dismounting and propeller disassembly. This will not only save time in the

dry dock but also costs in the shape of off-hire time, goods handling,

delays etc. Certainly any type and make of seal can easily be exchanged,

not only improving the quality of the sterntube seal but also guaranteeing a

simple and efficient service job.

The existing seal, normally broken down, will be removed by simply cutting it out. This is another result

of the fact that a shaft withdrawal is not necessary.

The Cedervall sterntube seal will then already be at the yard, waiting to be checked, cleaned and

mounted. A simple step by step program is carried out by the authorized Cedervall service engineer to

ensure the quality of the mounting and

the guarantees.

method implying a complete overhaul of a Cedervall

sterntube seal underwater or just a removal of a rope or

fishing net! Any kind of regular maintenance can also be

done, for example measuring bearing wear down.

A smaller boat is used to work from and

together with a platform; the service is carried

out underwater.

Apart from the cost savings that can be done
