Environmental Education in Schools of Andhra Pradesh (EESAP)

• Being implemented since 2000

• Partnership between Sarva Siksha Abhiyan, Sir Ratan Tata Trust, CEE and 33 NGOs

• CEE reaches over 1550 schools through the ‘cluster’ approach

• Objective is to develop a model for strengthening activity based EE in schools

Herbal Garden in EESAP schools• Being implemented in 100

EESAP schools in 11 districts of the state in partnership with 10 NGOs

• Supported by National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB) in coordination with Andhra Pradesh Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Board (APMAB)

• Objective is to sensitize students about the importance of medicinal plants in daily life and to develop skills in students to develop and maintain herbal gardens

SASYA – Bio intensive gardens in schools

• Implemented during July – December 2007 with support from UNICEF

• Objectives:– To improve school

environment quality – To develop guidelines

for developing bio intensive gardens

– To provide an opportunity to students to learn by doing

– To improve nutrition standards by providing organically grown vegetables for mid day meals

– To demonstrate organic cultivation to the community

Environmental education for urban schools

• Nandanavanam (2003 – 2005): – Objective: Orient the schools

children to green areas in the city and to develop action for conservation

– Components: Teacher training, material development

• Environmental Awareness campaign in summer coaching camps organized by GHMC (April – May 2007)– Objective: To orient the participants

about the importance of plant life in urban areas and to facilitate action for conservation

– Components: Quiz, poetry competitions, identification of environmental issues through group work etc

Societal Awareness and Visitor Education for conservation of Hussainsagar - SAVE Sagar

• Supported by the Buddha Purnima Project Authority (BPPA), HUDA

• Project is being implemented since October 2007

• Objectives:– Enhancing the awareness of

visitors, students and vendors about the natural and cultural heritage value of HSL

– Provide mechanism for involvement of interested stakeholders in conservation

• Components: Park education activities, interpretation centres, heritage trails, research fellowships for colleges, citizen’s conservation club, green vendor certification

Health and Sanitation in schools• Participatory assessment of

– Water and sanitation facilities in schools (with support from UNICEF, SSHE during March-April 2006)

– Operation and maintenance of water sanitation facilities in schools (with support from SWSM, during August – October 2007)

– Pre nomination Assessment for Nirmal Grampurakskar Award in Medak district (with support from SWSM, during December 2007)

• SAAAF, SAAAF Plus:– To create awareness, facilitate

assessment and required action– SAAAF plus: To monitor the status

of schools participated in SAAAF campaign

SAAAF Schools Campaign• SAAAF:

– Supported by UNICEF & TSC/RWS. Implemented during September 2006 to March 2007

– Objectives:• Build awareness on WATSAN issues

amongst students, teachers and departments

• Conduct assessment of the WATSAN facilities and maintenance through participatory process

• Identify and initiate action at various levels for proper use and maintenance of infrastructure

• SAAAF Plus:• To monitor the status of use and

maintenance of WATSAN facilities in school that took part in SAAAF campaign

• Project period: March 2008 to July 2008

Sustainable Rural Development• Environmental Management

Framework (EMF) for Poverty Reduction Projects:– CEE is ‘environment agency’ to

the World Bank supported projects of the Department of Rural Development,

• Indira Kranthi Patham, GoAP

• Vazhndhu kaattuvom, GoTN

– Objective is to provide support in ensuring the environmental sustainability of the livelihood activities supported

(through environmental assessment tools, promoting eco friendly livelihood activities, capacity building, monitoring, etc.)

• Other Assignments taken up in area of EMF:– Developed EMF for Bihar

Rural Livelihood Project– Conducted EMF Audit for

Chhattisgarh District Poverty Reduction Project

– Conducted EMF supervision for Rajasthan District Poverty Initiatives Project

– Designed EMF for a CDM agro-forestry project involving pulp wood plantations in Orissa and Andhra Pradesh

State of Natural Resource and Environment Reports

• Partnership with CST of IISc. Implemented during September 2006 – June 2007

• Objective: To develop tools, methods, guidelines, institutional arrangements and preparation of model SOENR reports at village level

• Components: Land use survey, household surveys, PRAs, field studies, secondary data collection
