With Hanukkah approaching, we turn our thoughts to latkas and hanukkiot (menorahs). We think about family, dreidels, and miracles. When we think about Hanukkah, we tend to focus on the miracle of the oil, but the Maccabees also deserve our attention. The Maccabees are interesting folks - they are a band of ruffians engaging in guerilla warfare, they are right-wing fundamentalists, and they are also the heroes of the Hanukkah story. The Maccabees, small in number but devoted to their cause, take on the Syrian Greek army and win. The Maccabees speak out against assimilation. They are determined to hang onto their Jewish identity and to fight for their identity on two fronts – the Syrian Greek empire which is persecuting the Jews, and the Jews themselves who become Hellenized. Hanukkah represents a moment in our history where we, the Jewish People, could have been lost. The rate of assimilation was so high during that time, that if the Maccabees hadn’t waged a war, Judaism might have been subsumed by the larger Greek culture. I find Hanukkah relevant today because the Jewish community in America has assimilated into the larger American society. Assimilation is not an inherently bad thing, but we do need to be careful about retaining our Jewish identity. We are at the precipice of another turning point in history. I recently spoke with a woman who was concerned that her grandchildren don’t know enough about being Jewish. While her son is content to pass along 'matzah ball and chicken soup' or 'lox and bagel' Judaism, she wants her grandchildren, to know more. The conversation struck a chord in me, especially with Hanukkah around the corner, because when we think about Hanukkah, we focus on the oil. It's lovely. It’s also a little superficial. Hanukkah has a lot to teach us about identity and what it means to fight for what we believe in, but we begin and end with the miracle of the oil and of course the gifts. I would like to issue a challenge to this community: what is one Jewish thing that you would like to learn about in depth, in the coming year? It can be anything you want – a value, a concept, a time in history, a holiday – What is your something Jewish? And how will you commit to learning about it? Wishing you a Happy Hanukkah, and a New Year filled with a deepened sense of Jewish identity,

Hanukkah is the holiday of miracles. After all, the dreidel – the quintessential Hanukkah toy, is marked by Hebrew letters standing for “a great miracle happened there.” But when we think about miracles, do we really think about the kind of miracle that Hanukkah is about? Miracles. The very word conjures up ideas of fairies, unknown forces, weird healers, and phony cures - things that are more “magical” than “miracle. We mistrust the idea of miracles, and with that mistrust, we lose a sense of awe and wonder at the world. Yet, on Hanukkah, miracles are the focus of the celebration. First and foremost, a small band of Jewish fighters were able to recapture and rededicate the Temple. Their victory against a large army should not have happened - the odds were stacked against them. The rabbis further extended the idea of celebrating miracles with the midrash about the oil that burned for eight days, when it should have only been enough for one day. This idea of the miracle of the oil helped the rabbis during the Roman era to find hope and faith in God. Similarly, we too are faced with situations every day that challenge our belief in God and in miracles. Whether we are dealing with changes in our health, family issues, or struggling with finding meaning in an ever-changing world, Hanukkah gives us permission to take a step back. On Hanukkah we are instructed to sit by the light of the candles with our family, friends, and loved ones and just enjoy their company. We are here to take delight in the company of those whom we care about, and we can see the miracle of the love that surrounds us like the light of the candles. May this Hanukkah find all of us with peace in our hearts and in our world. May we always be blessed to see the miracles that surround us. Chag Urim Sameach, Cantor Alexis K. Sklar

President’s Message We are the Candle People
I love to give and receive gifts. Don’t you?
It makes me feel like a kid again – especially at Hanukkah. I enjoy the anticipation when unwrapping a gift as much as I do seeing the expressions of those who receive my gifts. Like many of us, my earliest memories include lighting candles with my family on the eight nights of Hanukkah and, of course, the gifts that would follow. But, before we opened our surprises, my dad would remind us how important it was for each of us to “be like a candle” and the light that it shone.
He said there were two types of people in the world: a candle and a sponge … the sponge people take and take until they could take no more. Sponges, he said, only gave when they were squeezed into doing so; don’t be a sponge. We, the Jews, are “the candle people.” We will give and give, until our strength is dwindled, our light is weakened and we can give no longer.
Generations of Jewish parents have taught us that lighting the world, keeping it warm, and giving it hope is the essence of what it means to be a Jew. This was their way of teaching us our responsibility for tikkun olam, healing the world.
Our parents taught us that while we light the candles on the menorah to remember the miracle of the oil that burned for eight nights, it was equally if not more important that we remember the miracle we can provide to others by giving to the needy and supporting our temple. They were always certain to remind us of our responsibility to the center of Jewish learning, community and spirituality … our synagogue.
With Hanukkah approaching, I hope that you will continue to be candles and consider a gift to KTI so that we can always be the hub of Jewish life in your community. Your continued investment in KTI can change lives and is important to insuring the differences we want to see can be achieved.
I will close with the first and last lines of my favorite holiday song written by a Jew, “Light One Candle” by Peter Yarrow (Peter, Paul and Mary).
Light one candle for the Macabee children
Give thanks that their light didn’t die.
And light one candle to bind us together
With peace as the song in our heart!
Be one candle. Happy Hanukkah, Lawrence D. Engle President

KTI Religious School
We began our Bechira (electives) a few weeks ago with great excitement! This cycle we are offering four courses for our Hei, Vav, and Zayin classes which include: Jewish Yoga which blends traditional yoga with Hebrew vocabulary; Acting Out in Class (weekly Parsha study)--after studying about the weekly Torah portion students act out key parts of the story; Bishul (Jewish cooking)--kids get to learn to cook traditional Jewish foods (and get to eat them too!); The Underground where kids learn about the Resistance movement during World War II. The students are loving these electives and it is wonderful to watch them learning in mixed groupings.
We are also continuing our Israel tzedakah drive this year. This school year we will be collecting tzedakah for the Israel Guide Dog organization, an organization that helps visually impaired Israelis regain their independence through the use of guide dogs.
If it’s December Hanukkah must not be too far behind. On Tuesday, December 8th the Religious School 3rd-7th grade will participate in the annual Hanukiyadah, a school-wide color war, where the kids are divided into different teams representing different aspects of Hanukah. Each team will be creating a team song, cheer, commercial and participating in various Hanukah-themed events.
This year KTI Teens, along with teens from Temple Emanuel, Community Synagogue of Rye and JCC Harrison will join forces to make a difference in our community and have a fun time at our Teen Social Action Sundays. So far kids have participated in creating blankets for Project Linus and have participated in a Lone Soldier program which is designed the help lone Israeli soldiers (soldiers without Israeli parents) cope with serving in the Israeli Defense Force (IDF).
On December 11th please join us for a traditional Friday Night Kabbalat Shabbat service at 6:30 p.m. Following services we will have a KTI Hanukkah dinner at approximately 7:15 p.m. catered by Avril Kaye. There will be live music, delicious latkes prepared by KTI member Peter Raider and other Hanukkah treats. You do not have to attend one to enjoy the other. Reservations are required for the dinner. Please call the KTI office to RSVP no later than December 3
rd or with any
questions. Also our first Havdallah gathering will be on January 23rd from 5-6 p.m. Rabbi Sandy Zisser Director of Education

K.T.I. Early Childhood Program
The beginning days of school have quickly passed and we’re thoroughly into fall! Children have had fun making new friends and being immersed in seasonal activities. They have learned about the changing colors of the leaves and why the squirrels collect tasty acorns. During apple picking season, several classes also studied units on apples and have made apple prints, enjoyed apple tastings and charted each child’s preference. The holiday of Sukkot came late in September. Unfortunately, the weather was rainy but the children still sang songs, made decorations for the Sukkah, and had an opportunity to shake the lulav and smell the etrog in their classrooms. Despite raindrops, we had a great turnout of families who joined Rabbi Alpert, Cantor Sklar and many of the ECP staff for “Pizza in the Hut” (held in the sanctuary this year). All enjoyed a yummy pizza dinner with family and friends.
October was Fire Prevention Awareness month and the Port Chester Fire Department came to visit the ECP with a ladder engine and two firefighters. Firefighters Ryan and Cea spoke to all the children about staying safe with ‘Stop, Drop and Roll!’ After, each child got to have a turn sitting in the fire engine!
Our busy days are also always filled with fun “specials.” We’ve had visits from our furry friends through Animal Embassy, Mad Science, Bobby Doowah, and Gardening with our wonderful Fern. The “famous” Steve Stone has also been here. Sports with Steve Stone offers our children the opportunity to have fun, encourages fitness and develops sports skills and coordination.
After-school activities also began in October. Soccer, Once Upon a Story, Artists in Residence, Cooking, Clay, Nature, Rhythm, Math and Momentum are some of the programs that give children the opportunity to stay later at school, have lunch with their friends and try a new activity.
We had a large turnout for our Family Planting Day, held on Sunday, October 18th. Families came to the ECP and planted lots of flower bulbs in our backyard with the help of Fern Kaplan, Robin Goldberg and many from the ECP staff. Rabbi Alpert was also there, encouraging all the hard working planters. After, everyone enjoyed bagels and cream cheese, apples and cookies. We can hardly wait until spring when we’ll get to see all the colorful blossoms that the families planted.
Our first Tot Shabbat was Friday, November 6th and was very successful. Many ECP families joined us to welcome Shabbat with Rabbi Alpert, Cantor Sklar, Robin Goldberg and many from the ECP staff. We all sang songs, said Shabbat prayers and later enjoyed delicious challah, cookies and fruit. There was even wine for adults. We hope you will mark your calendars for our next Tot Shabbat: January 22, 2016!
Sunday, November 8th was our annual Bagels and Blocks for the 3s & 4s. Families came to meet the teachers, play in their children’s classrooms and enjoy coffee and bagels. It was a fun morning for all.
The Holiday Gift Boutique took place Thursday, November 12th. It was a great opportunity to pick up a few
presents for Hanukkah which comes early in December! Our KTI Hanukkah Party with our ECP families is on Thursday, December 10th from 5:00- 6:15pm. It will be a fun event where children join Rabbi Alpert to light the Hanukkiah, sing songs with Cantor Sklar, decorate and eat holiday cookies and create colorful crafts projects too. Also keep a lookout for our flyer with information on our December Vacation Camp which will run during the holidays.
Until next time, we wish you and your families a safe and happy holiday season.
