“We’re in Charge”

To see ourselves as part of creation—created as perfectly beautiful as a young flower—is essential if we are

going to count the earth and all its fullness as a gift. Even more importantly, the bible teaches us that we are not

only a part of creation, we are trusted by our God who has put us in charge of creation.

Psalm 8 helps us frame this late-spring meditation:

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,

the moon and the stars that you have established; 4

what are human beings that you are mindful of them,

mortals that you care for them?

5 Yet you have made them a little lower than God,

and crowned them with glory and honor. 6 You have given them dominion over the works of your hands;

you have put all things under their feet, 7

all sheep and oxen,

and also the beasts of the field, 8

the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea,

whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

9 O LORD, our Sovereign,

how majestic is your name in all the earth!

The psalmist is awestruck that God has given us “dominion.” As I have noted before, the Hebrew word for dominion is

the word ra-dah’. This word is a rare word, also used to describe the kind and considerate rule of a good king…a king

that has regard for the orphan and the widow. The psalmist praises God for the trust God has shown humanity in charging

us with the care of our fragile earth.

It is our responsibility to live gently and kindly on the land. I am busy planting a few more shrubs out on our little plot in

the country. Nancy and I are trying to figure out what greenery we will plant around our home in Brandon. These are

modest considerations…maybe fifty little plantings. But I do want to see our gentle care for plants and bushes as not only

a selfish concern (we hope our neighbors will think we have at least a presentable yard!!), but that those efforts at

establishing new life would be an offering of thanksgiving to our God who has given us all good and beautiful things.

With these thoughts, I do look forward to worshipping outdoors on Wednesday evenings (7:00 p.m.). Not only will the

wind through the leaves of the trees invite us to thank God for the beauty of the world, but it will also call us to remember

that we are in charge of outdoor sanctuaries of every kind.

Blessings,

Pastor Greg Johnson

June 3, 7:00 pm – Outdoor Summer Worship on Wednesday

evenings This half hour, devotional worship time will do many things for Beaver

Valley: it allows those for whom weekend, Sunday worship is not possible the

opportunity to still join in worship each week; it will allow for a variety of new styles of

worship music to evolve; it will provide opportunities for others to preach or teach the

word, with guest presenters (lay and ordained) periodically invited into the Wednesday

schedule.

June 6, Saturday, 1:00 p.m.—Food Shepherds meeting Food Shepherds is a group of members from Beaver Valley who meet monthly to prepare meals that can be

delivered by a member of the congregation to those around us who are most often facing life transitions.

Sometimes the occasion for a Food Shepherd meal is a happy one: i.e. just home from the hospital with a new

baby. Sometimes the occasion is unfortunate: the death of a family member or a medical condition that is

stressing the family, etc. If you know of someone that could not only use a nicely prepared meal, but the

encouragement that comes with the delivery of kindness, call the church and become part of the Food Shepherd

story.

June 11, Thursday, 7:00 pm – Council meeting The church council) will meet to conduct monthly business. Members of Beaver Valley

are always welcome to sit in on these meetings. Any business or concerns that you would

like to present to the council should be made known to church council president, Georgia

Backer at any time.

June 13, Saturday, 9:00 am – Small Group Book Club meets in Garretson Join us for a fun hour at Annie’s Coffee Shop in Garretson. It is very informal and we meet monthly at 9 am on

the second Saturday of the month. Come suggest your favorite books and bring your friends. (Don’t’ have to

read a book to attend.) We look forward to seeing you there.

June 13, Saturday, 4:30 p.m.—Senior High Youth Night Beaver Valley’s Senior High will meet to first grill some food over the fire and then some friendly competition

(game night) and some wind down conversation. Invite a friend! Contact Derek Hanson with questions.

June 20, Saturday, 5:00 pm Beaver Valley’s Mid-Summer

Celebration! Come join the fun at Beaver Valley’s 142nd

Midsummer traditional

Swedish event! Decorate the midsummer pole, learn folk dances, make midsummer wreaths,

and enjoy children’s games and Swedish delicacies. 5:00pm Pole decorating, 5:30pm

Supper, 7:00pm Pole celebration & “Frog” dance. Menu will be pork loin, baked beans,

potato salad, chips, watermelon, beverages and desserts.

June 28, Sunday,--Bible Campers leave for camp Right after church our Klein Ranch group will “saddle up” and head out west for a week of camp. Later in the

day, our future 4th

and 5th

graders will head off to Shetek Bible Camp for their mini-camp experience. Prayers

for safe travel and growth in faith!

CEMETERY SPOTLIGHT

BEAVER VALLEY

‘Gift a Headstone for our unmarked graves’

Both of Beaver Valley’s cemeteries (church proper and the south cemetery located across from the Beaver

Creek Nature Area) have graves that are unmarked. The cemetery board invites members and friends of the

congregation to buy a tombstone to properly mark the graves of those buried. The cost of each grave stone is

$50.

We have a list of 34 unmarked graves in the north cemetery (church grounds). A list of unmarked graves in the

south cemetery is being put together and will be available in the near future.

Checks can be made to the Beaver Valley Cemetery Fund with Headstone in the memo area and given to the

church office. Thank you!

Helen Jacobson

Can ordinary tasks be holy? The answer is yes, if done with a believer’s heart. I believe that

this is a true reflection of the service that Helen gave this church for over 30 years. She loving

cared for this place of worship as God’s house. Vacuuming became prayer as she cleaned the

halls and stairs. She scrubbed and polished and kept this place looking good because she truly

cared about her church home. On May 2nd

, Helen retired from her job as custodian of Beaver

Valley Church. That may have been her official title, but she was truly a caretaker of this place.

The love with which she did each task, no matter how menial, will be hard to replace.

There was no big celebration, no cake or red punch poured, just a heartfelt thank you for your

service to the Lord.

Thank you and God Bless you, Helen!

Dear Beaver Valley Church family,

Thank you so much for the gift card and money! I

appreciate it more than any of you will ever know.

It always brightens my day when I get mail from

God's Creators. Thanks, again. God bless!

Isaac Hanson
