Dear Parents and Carers, Mary has arrived The beautiful statue of Mary Mackillop (St Mary of the Cross) arrived from South Australia on Thursday, in time to be placed at the front of the church for yesterday’s parish celebration of Mary’s feast day. In the coming weeks we are choosing the stone that will become the plinth below the statue and preparing the site in the school grounds that will become Mary’s new home. So far twenty-five families have made a donation to the cost of the statue. Next Friday, all names will be provid- ed to Peter Hill who will engrave them onto the plaque that will be placed on the plinth. Parents and parishioners still wishing to make a donation, and have their children’s names or their family name added to the plaque, have until Friday 19 August to do so. Details regarding donations are included in today’s newsletter. St Mary of the Cross is such an important spiritual guide for our school community because she demonstrated how to be a disciple of Jesus, how to love like Jesus. In fact Fr David described her to our children yesterday as one of our heroes. Her simple mantra, “never see a need without doing something about it”, reminds us that fol- lowing Jesus is about being grounded in loving those around us in word and deed. Michael Leunig’s prayer (below) is a further reminder of what a challenge this can be. Love one another and you will be happy”. It’s as simple and as difficult as that. There is no other way. NAIDOC Today is International Day of the World’s Indigenous People’s and the UN site explains that there are an estimated 370 mil- lion indigenous people in the world, living across 90 countries. They make up less than 5 per cent of the world's population, but account for 15 per cent of the poorest. They speak an overwhelming majority of the world's estimated 7,000 languages and represent 5,000 different cultures. On Friday St Finbarr’s celebrates Australia’s Indigenous People through NAIDOC. The children will lead the community at a special assembly at 9:00am. Following this, Aunty Delta will work with each stage, one at a time, leading up to morning tea. I hope you are able to join us. Please Help all to Stay Healthy! There is a lot of illness around our community at present, particularly a gastro bug and a flu virus. If your child is unwell please keep them at home. Several students have had to be sent home during the day recently. By keeping your child at home you will help to limit the spread of germs. First Holy Communion Program Our First Holy Communion program continued with last Friday’s lesson look-ing closely at the Mass and how we gather and listen. We discussed when, how and why stories are shared. Again, students participated thoughtfully and reverently. Stage Masses As always you are most welcome to join us for the following Stage Masses:

Kindy Friday 26th August 9:30 at St. Finbarr’s Church, Byron Bay.

Stage 3 Friday 9th September 9:30 at St. Finbarr’s Church, Byron Bay.

Whole School Masses Yesterday we celebrated the Feast of St. Mary of the Cross MacKillop with a whole school/parish Mass. Mary is Australia’s first Saint. She was one of Australia's most remarkable women who demonstrated incredible strength, devotion, inspiration and absolute trust in God. Mary’s example was fol-lowed by other women and we celebrate her life with the Sisters of St. Jo-seph who continue her good work today. We will celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary next Monday 15

th August. Again, the mass will be at 9:30 at St. Finbarr’s Church and we

look forward to seeing you there.

Year of Mercy

Pope Francis says, "We need constantly to contem-

plate the mystery of mercy. It is a wellspring of joy,

serenity, and peace.”

The motto for the year, Merciful like the Father,

serves as an invitation to follow the merciful example

of God who asks us not to judge or condemn but to

offer love and forgiveness instead.

Reflecting on the image

In this image Pope Francis blesses the young man.

For Pope Francis ‘Mercy’ is one of the names of

God. Mercy is a key to his spirituality, his papacy,

his entire life. Many of the images we see of Pope

Francis show him embracing God’s little ones – the

elderly, children, those with disabilities. John Burland Live in Concert Our school is fortunate to have singer John Burland performing on Thursday 25th August at 1:45pm in our school hall. Students will be immersed in a joyful and prayerful celebration of our Catholic faith. Parents, younger sib-lings and parishioners are also invited to attend the live concert. CATHOLIC SCHOOLS OFFICE

9 August 2016 Dear Parents During Term 3 on Tuesday 23 August 2016, Carolyn Wade will be involved in an assistant principal appraisal pro-cess as part of her contract renewal conditions with the Catholic Schools Office. The appraisal process seeks information from a variety of people associated with the parish school. The process aims to highlight the positive aspects of the assistant principal’s performance and identify areas for further develop-ment. A timeline will be constructed to suit the needs of the parish school community. A panel consisting of two CSO Con-sultants, one of whom will act as Chair, and the school principal will conduct the appraisal. The full assistant principal appraisal process involves:

a survey and self-appraisal statement completed by the assistant principal

surveys of parish school staff, Catholic Schools Office personnel

an interview with the principal

input as arranged with the parish priest

interviews with parish school staff

interviews with any parents who wish to present

a formal interview with the assistant principal by the panel Any parents who wish to make contact with the panel are welcome to do so by contacting the Chair of the panel on (02 6622 0422) before the appraisal date. Thank you for your support of the parish school’s leadership team. Yours sincerely

Cookbook Update CONGRATULATIONS we are a quarter of the way with our Cookbook sales… 512 books sold, with 1488 to go! Thanks to everyone for enthusiastically promoting the book. The Cookbook has been promoted on Bay FM, Byron community Radio station, it has also been sold at The Farmers Market, both in Byron and Bangalow. This week the Finnie’s Cookbook was featured outside Woolworths Byron Bay. We braved the elements and got amongst the community, successfully making sales. We are very excited to have also had our Cookbook feature at this year’s Byron Bay Writers Festival. The Cookbook is a fundraising initiative of the School Forum, and ALL sales are fundraising dollars for our children’s direct educational benefit. Once all 2000 books are sold, we will have raised a net profit of over $50,000… that is the equiv-alent of three entire Christmas Fairs. Please, if you are free to assist with sales, or have any ideas, don’t hesitate to con-tact the school forum, via the office [email protected]

ABC PLAY SCHOOL CASTING

CALL

We are looking for Byron

Shire families to take part

in our next ‘Through the Win-

dow’ series.

This series aims to explore the Cubby House. Today

it may be a home to invite friends to tea; tomorrow

a fort to defend from enemies. It can be a school-

house, a store, doctor's office, or a space ship. A

cubby house can help kids learn how to create en-

tire worlds out of four walls. This is their space to

take care of and enjoy - and we would like to see

yours!

We are looking for kids aged 5-7 years who have

an interesting cubby house and would like to be on

Play School.

It doesn't matter what the house looks like; it can

be a tree house, a nook under the stairs, a box or a

collection of cushions.

The shoot dates will be either the 22nd, 23rd or 24th of

August. It will take approximately 4 hours and will

most likely be filmed in and around your home.

If you are interested please send the following infor-

mation to the email or mobile below.

1. A link to a short video of your child chatting to

camera. They could introduce themselves and tell

us about their cubby house and why they love it.

This doesn’t have to be good quality; it’s purely to

gauge how they might be in front of the camera. If

you have a smartphone then just use that. NB:

please don’t send the file itself (unless it’s very

small!) – Upload it to a dropbox, or youtube, etc

and send me the link.

2. Their name and age, and your contact details.

Please send it to either the email address below or

mobile number below.
