sChOOl nICkname “Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central

Oklahoma in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school.

Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization.

Bronze and blue were chosen as Central Oklahoma’s school colors in 1895 by school president Edmund Dan-dridge Murdaugh.

The first public display of the bronze and blue was in Guthrie when a student represented UCO in the first oratorical contest ever held in Oklahoma.

Central Oklahoma plays its home games at Tom Thompson Field, located just east of Ham-ilton Field House on campus.

The field is named for UCO graduate Tom Thompson, who donated funds to help start the soccer program in 1998, and it now ranks as one of the finest soccer facilities in NCAA Division II after undergoing a renovation five years ago.

UCO has enjoyed great suc-cess on its home field, entering the 2017 season with a glitter-ing 139-32-10 record in the facility, a winning percentage of .795. The Bronchos played their first home game on Sept. 13, 1998, beating St. Gregory’s 3-0, and went 7-1-1 at home last year.

UCO has also played 15 home games away from Tom Thompson Field, having gone 12-2 at Wantland Stadium and 0-1 at the Edmond Soccer Club Field. The Bronchos drew what was then an NCAA Division II-record 2,139 fans to Wantland Stadium in 2008 in a game against Dallas Baptist and went 8-2 while playing all 10 home games there in 2010.

playoffs despite playing an independent schedule. UCO hosted one of the South Central Regional tournaments and received a first-round bye before dropping a tough 1-0 decision to Dallas Baptist in the second round.

Central joined the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association in 2012 and Cook led the Bronchos to a runner-up finish and a second straight national tournament appearance. UCO won its first-round playoff game before falling 1-0 in the second round in fin-ishing the season 16-3-3.

The Bronchos went 9-10-2 during an injury-plagued 2013 season, pulling off two upsets in the MIAA Post-season Tournament to make the finals before losing in overtime.

UCO got back on track in 2014, returning to the national tournament and winning a first-round game en route to a 14-5-3 finish. The Bronchos went 12-5-3 and finished as MIAA runners-up in 2015.

Cook had his team back in the national playoffs last season, with UCO making it to the second round before being eliminated. The Bronchos went 15-7-1 and handed Central Missouri its lone regular season loss before falling to the Jennies in the MIAA Tournament finals and again in the national tournament.

Mike came to UCO after a highly-successful tenure at Southern Nazarene. He started his career as an assistant coach for the SNU men’s team from 1987-92 before taking over head coaching duties for both the men’s and women’s teams in 1993.

2017 UCO Soccer

Central Oklahoma enters the 2017 season ready to continue the powering style of play that led it to a return trip to the NCAA Tournament last season.

Mike Cook enters his 20th season – the 20th season of soccer at Central – with 280 wins and one of the deepest rosters he’s had in his tenure here.

He averages 14 wins pers season and last year won 15, with its final win coming in the team’s 11th trip to the NCAA Tournament.

UCO returns 5 of 7 All-MIAA performers from a season ago too, lending some early momentum to the team.

“Every year is great to get the season going,” Cook said. “We’ve got a great crop of returning players that have gotten a lot of experience the last couple of years. We’ve also got a good group of incoming freshman that we know can come in right away and compete for playing time and definitely add some extra punch to our team this year.”

“Our seniors, there are only two of them, what we’re looking for from them besides obviously on the field success, is leadership. That’s a big role in a successful team. And our juniors can help with that. They’ve been here for a few years now and know what to expect both on and off the field and can really help with the leadership.”

Here is a complete position-by-position breakdown of the 2017 Central Oklahoma Bronchos.

fOrwardKatieKillion is the leader of the pack when it comes to the

front of the potent, high-octane Broncho attack.Killion earned MIAA Freshman of the Year in 2015, and a

second First Team selection as a sophomore a season ago. She scored 12 goals last season, following the 10 she scored as a freshman.

Last year the Bronchos scored 1.96 goals per game, scoring 45 goals in 23 games. UCO put 199 shots on goal last year, keeping the pressure on opposing defenses all season long. Killion leads the attack, ready to sprint upfield as soon as one of the defenders or midfielders corrals the ball.

Killion isn’t alone though. Cook uses a three-high a lot to take advantage of the deep roster full of forwards who are capable of striking at any moment.MikaylaLowery is one of two seniors on this year’s team and

had a stellar debut in Bronze & Blue last year. The OBU transfer scored six goals and added six assists. Her

18 points was second to only Killion.AshaHaile is just a sophomore, but tied Lowery with six goals

last year during her redshirt freshman campaign. Haile led the Bronchos in goals scored for a portion of the season around the midway point. One of the fastest players on the team is also one of the best ball-handlers too.MorganCherry is another option at forward who is one of the

most opportunistic players on the team. A straightaway forward can drive the ball right into the hear of the defense and get a shot off at any moment. Cherry played in all 23 games last season, starting 13 of them, and took 54 shots, second most on the team.

Haley Post and FalynDodd both earned valuable minutes last season. Both are younger players, but very athletic. BlaireFerguson sat out last season with an injury and will also vye for time up front this season.MadisonMotil, SamanthaMickleand CaliWalker are fresh-

men looking to find a role.

mIdfIelderThe Bronchos have a solid mix of veterans and newcomers at

midfielder this season.CaitlinMoore earned All-MIAA honors last season as a soph-

omore and was one of six Bronchos to play in all 23 games. She also started a team-high 22 games.CaseyHerndon played in 21 games a year ago. A junior in 2017

like Moore, Herndon worked to become a mainstay in the lineup and a key figure in briding the Broncho offense and defense.CallieMcLaughlin, VictoriaNeblett, MichelleMolen and Pip-

erCannonalso have experience to add to the position. KentiaKokis, who was an All-MIAA performer in 2015 before sitting out last season, is back with the Bronchos and is another piece to the puzzle in the middle for Cook.KelsieEason and DanielleLorson are true freshmen and have

an opportunity to find minutes – Cook is known for playing freshmen – but will have to earn it at a deep position.

defenderKelseyGordon leads a backline for the Bronchos that put to-

gether a dominant season in 2016, allowing 1.3 goals per game. Gordon, just a freshman a year ago, earned All-MIAA honors after stepping into the role at center back and leading the charge.CamrieHurst has done the same for two seasons. Now a junior

Hurst is a versatile defender that helps the Broncho backline as well as the midfield.PaigePatterson served a similar role last season as a redshirt

freshman. AshleySnider has been out with injury, but is another versatile player with experience in the league.

Cook then fills out his defense with newcomers.MeredithWilson, MariahMoore, Ashton Johnson and Ca-

milleGreer are true freshman that will all see some time. Taylor Reed, a redshirt freshman transfer will also help out.

GOalkeePerCook has two veteran stallwarts to rotate in goal in senior Elle

Stoverand junior AllySalls.Stover was the go-to keeper in her sophomore season in 2015,

starting in 15 of 16 games played and making more than 60 saves. She battled injuries as a junior last season, but has played 30 games in her career and made over 100 saves.

Salls stepped up last season in place of Stover, leading the way for the Bronchos. She played in 22 of 23 games, starting 20 of them and making 76 saves. She has 14 wins as a keeper in two years.

Cook said his other two keepers, both freshman, could see some minutes too. Cook said KatrinaOrtiz and KaitlynAsherare both very athletic and add depth to the position.

Edmond is located in the heart of Oklahoma, just north of the state capital in Oklahoma City, and has a population of over 90,000 as one of the fastest growing cities in the state.

Edmond has the best of both worlds including easy access to the city with just enough distance to maintain a close-knit community atmosphere.

The city offers outstanding hotels, nostalgic shopping areas and conve-niently located attractions for your enjoyment. Known for its outstand-ing golf courses, Edmond has hosted some of the most exciting PGA and celebrity events in the past two decades at world-famous Oak Tree Golf Club.

Edmond is the fastest growing, most economically dynamic city in Oklahoma. Thriving technology firms, diverse retail and com-mercial opportunities, and small corporate office headquarters have enhanced our reputation as the affluent residential suburb to the metropolitan area.

There are many more activities in Edmond, with a variety of music, art, theatre, water and sporting events that make for spectacu-lar family fun.

Heard on Hurd, pictured above, is a monthly festival where Downtown Edmond is transformed into an exciting mix of food trucks, family friendly excitement, and music that has become one of the premier, socially engaging events in the area.

Edmond also boasts one of the best Fourth of July fireworks shows in the country, and it’s held right here at UCO. More than 125,000 people attend the event. LibertyFest has been previously chosen by CNN and USA Today as one of the top 10 places to be in America on July 4.

Another Edmond attraction is Lake Arcadia. Home to the Center for Outdoor Adventure Recreation, Lake Arcadia offers trails for running, hiking, and cycling, as well as 1,820 surface acres for boating, skiing, kayaking, and fishing, and 26 miles of shoreline for more fun.

The largest city in the state, Oklahoma City borders Ed-mond to the south and sits at the crossroads of I-35, I-40 and I-44, leaving OKC with more than 130 miles of federal and insterstate highways.

More than 1.3 million peo-ple call metro Oklahoma City home.

The City, as it is commonly referred to around the state, offers numerous things to do on any given day of the week – or year for that matter. Whether it is sports, music, art, or just getting outside on a nice day, OKC offers it all.

Chesapeake Energy Arena in downtown Oklahoma City is not only home to the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder, but it also hosts concerts year-round, as well as other events such as pro wrestling, bull riding, and more.

Bricktown, the central hub of entertainment in down-town, is home to Bricktown Ballpark, where the Oklahoma City Dodgers – Triple-A affiliate to MLB’s L.A. Dodgers – play ball. The ballpark also hosts high school games, collegiate tournaments, as well as con-certs of its own.

There is plenty more to do, especially on the booming, Oklahoma River.

The UCO rowing team calls the river home and has a state-of-the-art boathouse on the river to prove it. Visitors can also enjoy the Riversport Adventure District, where you can challenge yourself through a white-water rapids course, zip-line across the river, or bungee jump among other fun activities.

There are also five lakes in the greater OKC metro area that offer ample fun including fishing, running or cycling trails, and swimming.

There are also more than a dozen golf courses to choose from.

Along with art museums, a science museum, and many more, there is always some-thing to do in OKC.

The Adventure District is just 10 minutes from UCO and offers many fun things to do.

Remington Park races horses more than half of the year, the Oklahoma City Zoo is always a top-pick, and it sits right next to the Science Museum.

If you venture west of down-town toward the fairgrounds, you can find more fun.

Home to the Oklahoma State Fair every September, as well as shows year-round, the fairgrounds offer countless entertainment options.

Oklahoma City is in a warm southwest climate. It sees more than 300 days of sun-shine on average per year.

The average temperature annually is 60 degrees accord-ing to the Oklahoma City Vis-itors Convention Bureau. OKC also sees on average 32.03 inches of rain and nine inches of snow every year.

UCO teams have captured 18 conference championships and had 14 top-10 national finishes during Muller’s tenure, with softball winning the school’s first-ever women’s national championship in 2013.

Central Oklahoma enters its sixth year as a member of the Mid-Ameri-ca Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The MIAA, a 14-member conference of NCAA Division II institutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 17 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 indi-vidual national titles.

The MIAA currently conducts championships in eight sports for men and nine for women.

For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf.

The women compete for titles in volley-ball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf, ten-nis and bowling.

The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercol-legiate Athletic Association to the Mid-Amer-ica Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The decision to make the change originat-ed in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Wash-burn became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain membership in the MIAA.

The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institutions. Of those original members, Central Missou-ri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA.

The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reor-ganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Cen-

tral Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State).

Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Missouri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980.

Ken Jones became the first full-time commissioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007.

Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July of that year and served as com-missioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over. Mike Racy is the current commissioner and began in January of 2017 following Boerigter’s retirement.

Southwest Baptist brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri South-ern and Missouri Western began competi-tion in the 1989-90 season.

Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA fol-lowing the 1990-91 season and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season.

Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lin-coln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, Nebras-ka-Omaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010.

UCO, Lindenwood, Nebraska-Kearney and Northeastern State all become league members with the start of the 2012-13 academic year.

Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State did the same in 2013, which leaves the conference with 14 schools. Lincoln and SBU are associate members and don’t compete in football.
