The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee is proudly accredited with the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries.

As we commemorate The Elephant Sanctuary’s 20th Anniversary in 2015, we salute The Sanctuary’s beginnings, and its growth and development since 1995. We also applaud the dedication of the supporters and volunteers who helped make it all possible. In celebrating the past twenty years, we look ahead –guided by a new five-year strategic plan (see back cover)– and united by a sustained commitment to values which recognize that:

Our Mission

The Elephant Sanctuary exists for two reasons:

• To provide captive elephants with individualized care, the companionship of a herd, and the opportunity to live out their lives in a safe haven dedicated to their wellbeing; and

• To raise public awareness of the complex needs of elephants in captivity, and the crisis facing elephants in the wild.

Founded in 1995, The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee is the nation’s largest natural-habitat refuge developed specifically around the needs of endangered Asian and African elephants. It operates on 2700 acres in Hohenwald, Tenn. – 85 miles southwest of Nashville. As an authentic sanctuary, the habitat where the elephants live is not open to the public.

Captured in India at age one, Misty spent 40 years in the entertainment industry, either in a barn or on the road. In 2004, the USDA reached an agreement with the Hawthorn Corporation –a company that rented exotic animals to circuses– over the company’s multiple violations of the Animal Welfare Act, through which Misty and several other elephants were retired to The Elephant Sanctuary.

Like many elephants that left the wild as calves to spend their lives on exhibit or in performing, Misty had little to no experience with freedom-of-choice or large tracts of land. But since her arrival in 2004, Care staff have worked to build her trust, and encouraged her exploration of the larger natural areas available to her.

On June 11th, 2014, Misty walked a mile-plus away from the Asia Barn (where she’s spent most of her time since retiring to Sanctuary) to visit part of the 2100-acre Asia Habitat she’d never seen before. That day, she appeared ready to discover more. A spring-fed lake was in her path, and in she went! She splashed around, dunked herself, and then grabbed a cat-nap on the muddy bank afterwards.

In 2014, Misty demonstrated just how much of an individual she is – that despite the challenges of aging, she can still claim new experiences for herself, adapt to her surroundings, and seek out inventive ways to interact with her environment.

Expanded Elephant Care staff, creating a fully-integrated Veterinary and Husbandry program for Whole Elephant Care, supported by consultants with depth-of-expertise in veterinary behavior, environmental enrichment, and operant conditioning;

Facility renovations and progress made around tuberculosis treatment, permitting Phase I and II Quarantined elephants to again share the same habitat and barn, thus expanding opportunities for their socialization via touch (not just smell and sound);

Additional updates and improvements to barns, fencing, and facilities, including a new supply warehouse to help meet the changing needs of the resident elephants as they age;

International partnership with veterinarians in Thailand to facilitate an idea-exchange on best care for captive Asian elephants;

Educational outreach on elephants made available via Distance Learning to nearly 1200 K-12 students in eighteen states and one foreign country;

Sixty-three EleAmbassadors recruited and trained as volunteer representatives for Sanctuary in 23 U.S. states and two Canadian provinces;

2.9 million individuals experienced The Elephant Sanctuary via YouTube, EleCams, and other outreach channels;

Nearly 1400 visitors attended educational programs held at The Sanctuary’s Welcome Center in downtown Hohenwald, Tenn.;

National release of two critically-acclaimed books brought new audiences to The Elephant Sanctuary: Carol Bradley’s non-fiction Last Chain on Billie (St. Martin’s Press) and Jodi Picoult’s fictional Leaving Time (Ballantine Bantam Dell/Random House).

Accredited status awarded with the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries. GFAS accreditation provides a transparent, trusted means for the public, donors, and government agencies to recognize outstanding animal sanctuaries meeting rigorous, peer-reviewed standards around safety and security, veterinary care, and other areas of financial and organizational sustainability;

GOAL 1: PROVIDE SANCTUARY Offer lifelong, integrated care for elephants already in Sanctuary, and welcome additional captive elephants that will benefit from lifelong care.

Measures of Success:

• Lifelong, individualized care plans for the health and wellbeing of each resident elephant

• Commitment to a Protected Contact system of elephant management and 24/7 veterinary care

• Successful transition for any new elephants coming to Sanctuary

GOAL 2: INFLUENCE THROUGH EDUCATION Increase understanding of and support for conservation efforts to protect elephants in the wild, and promote practices to improve the wellbeing of captive elephants.

Measures of Success:

• Increase the number of participants in the Sanctuary’s educational outreach programs

• Develop K-12 elephant curriculum for educators, designed toward core standards for science education and service-learning

• Increase collaborations with international partners

GOAL 3: CREATE AND SHARE BEST PRACTICES Develop models for ‘whole elephant’ care and create connections within the global elephant community to promote and share best practices.

Measures of Success:

• Expand relationships with elephant support groups and experts in the field

• Publish and/or share best practices on elephant wellbeing and care

• Grow the training and professional development program for Sanctuary elephant Caregivers

GOAL 4: AMPLIFY PUBLIC AWARENESS Foster recognition for The Elephant Sanctuary as a thought-leader on elephant wellbeing.

Measures of Success:

• Develop and launch a new and updated elephants.com

• Demonstrate growth in digital-marketing success

• Align all efforts to optimize opportunities for connecting with donors

GOAL 5: SUSTAIN THE MISSION Build and diversify financial support in order to sustain sanctuary for retired captive elephants, as well as educate the public about the complex challenges facing all elephants.

Measures of Success:

• Ensure existing supporters stay engaged with the mission

• Expand and diversify the donor base

• Broaden support from individuals, corporations, foundations and workplace-giving programs

GOAL 6: DEVELOP ORGANIZATIONAL CAPACITY Cultivate the people, systems, and infrastructure necessary to provide the ideal environment for elephants in care, and through which The Sanctuary might effectively fulfill its mission.

Measures of Success:

• Evaluate and upgrade facilities, fencing, and equipment on an ongoing basis

• Meet or exceed standards set by both regulatory and accrediting agencies

• Improve individual/team performance through participation in professional development and training
