Meli’s mother was a commercial artist and taught Meli how to observe what she saw in her world and would interpret it with drawing and paintings on paper and canvas. While pursuing a bachelors and masters degree in Environmental Engineering, Meli was able to squeeze a few fine art classes in her busy schedule while re- ceiving tutoring from her mother. Of all the types of media that she has had an opportunity to work with, her first love was and always has been painting with soft pastels. Why soft pastels? In her own words she states; “I love the brilliance and intensity of color that pastels are able to display. Being able to lay and mix the colors directly on sanded paper is more appealing to me than mixing colors on a pallet.” As an newly emerging artist selling her work, Meli’s paintings can be found in homes in Canada, Virginia, Ohio, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, along the California Central Coast as well as in Southern California. Three of her works are published in “the 2nd Art Edition “International Contemporary Masters 2009” a fine art book released in 2009 published by Despina Tunberg. Meli is currently a board member of the San Fernando Valley Art Club (editor of the monthly Paint Rag) and the Simi Valley Artist Association.

President’s Message December 2009

November Show Winners

Helene Jukoff 1st Jackie Rodbell HM Susan Sjoberg 3rd Ben Levine 2nd

If you could re-live a year in your life, which year would it be? Would you do things differently or would you want to go back because it was one of the best years in your life? I think that many of us have asked ourselves that question and I know that I have. Like most of you I’ve had some wonderful times that I would love to re-peat and some that were just so sweet that I’m delighted to actually savor them as a delicious rich dessert. Usually the monthly president’s message is a re-cap of the latest meeting or event. Sometimes it’s a pep talk urging you to get involved or to paint for the next big show. But this time it’s about my experiences in the last three years. My three years as President of SFVAC were the rich dessert type. Oh, of course there was the oc-casional heartburn, but mostly it was sheer pleasure. I have truly had the time of my life and as the song says,………….”I owe it all to you.” I have met and made so many friends who I will carry in my heart forever. I have laughed, learned and loved with so many of you that the mere memory of it overwhelms me and I am blessed. I am eternally grateful for the gifts I’ve been given, the kindness, the sympathy, the advice, the shared confi-dences, the artwork I’ve been privileged to view and the lessons I have learned. The San Fernando Valley Art Club is more than an art club. We are a collection of artists who prove to the whole community that there is beauty. We are people who validate that art and those who share it with the world are the peace keepers and the guardians of the flame. The time has come for me to pass the torch and I want to thank you all so very much for the honor it has been to serve as your president and I am humbled to walk in your light. Happy Holidays © 2009 D. Marler
