To sit and recollect with someone who was born before the first shells were fired in the First World War and live under 24 Australian Prime Ministers I found fascinating. Richard Cook, better known as Dick is that person, born on April 14th, 1914 and today is 100 years and 31 days old. Dick celebrated his birthday with a family luncheon on Sunday April 13th and again on the 14th at Allora’s Homestead Aged Persons Hostel with a sumptuous lunch in his honour. While only a Homestead resident for a few months, Dick can’t speak highly enough of the staff at his new home and the level of care. Prior to the move into ‘the Best Little Town on the Downs’ Dick had resided for ten years with daughter & son in law Robyn & Neil Phelan at tranquil nearby Goomburra. As Dick recalled his life and I took notes & sipped tea with him and his daughter Robyn, I became engrossed in his clear recollections of a time gone by that provided more than a glimpse of history, history of both Darling Downs rural life & the Gold Coast area, along with the refrigeration transport industry. While noting Dick’s recollections, I noticed glancing over my reading glasses that given his age Mr. Cook read perfectly, without glasses. He wasn’t short of company either with passers –by, staff & friends looking in for a catch up and a chat. His room at the Homestead, which opens on to a manicured court yard, is decorated with family photographs & countless cards from well wishers regarding his recent birthday, including some very special wishes from Queen Elizabeth II and the Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove. Born in Sydney, Dick was raised on the Darling Downs, Goombungee to be specific. The family operated a dairy at Goombungee on “Avondale” through bad time and good, Dick growing up with three brothers, George, Cecil, Neville and a sister Fay. As a child he would run the three miles to the Goombungee School barefoot, “it was a good life” says Dick and grins, “amazing I didn’t end up an Olympic runner.” When the Goombungee State School celebrated its 125th In the company of his Grandchildren Jane, Scott and Katrina, Dick Cook enjoying his 100th birthday gathering. anniversary, Dick was among the many to return to the ‘ole schoolyard’ and reminisce, he was actually the third eldest past student to attend the celebration. His school days ended when aged 14 and his working life commenced on the family farm and other farms around the district.Shuffling through photographs we came across Dick’s first car, a 1928 Whippet single seater that he made into a utility, the Whippet followed by one of his favourite cars, a 1936 Plymouth. Creature comforts were rarities in the Depression years, sheer survival the focus for families and individuals. For Dick it was a time to spread his wings, and as a twenty year old he did just that, heading west by train with an older mate Frank Giles, working as a rouseabout on a sheep station at “Lorraine Downs”, Wallumbilla near Roma. The only transport servicing the area was a mail van that went through once a week.“We arrived by train” recalls Dick, “there was no ducking in to town for a night, we were where we were for two years”.Frank was a First World War veteran and had taken Dick under his wing. The two young men were hired to finish constructing a woolshed and yards, and a visit many years later saw the shed still standing.Frank eventually became a station cook, while Dick evolved into a musterer. From the shearing sheds, where the bell made from a bore casing is a fond recollection for Dick, “the bell was rung to start & stop shearing”, the young man from Goombungee headed to

Acland driving coal trucks to a rail siding near Sabine, a small siding near Oakey. He would also cart timber to the mines that were used as supports, the mine was small, only seven men working it in the 1940’s, and now in 2014 the town of Acland no longer exists. Due to illness, a hernia surgery and later an extensive convalescence due to meningitis, Dick was deemed unfit for a call up for military service. While he didn’t realise it at the time, he was about to embark on the next stage of his life. He headed to the Gold Coast in 1942 for a holiday, and stayed 62 years. He was offered work that developed into full time employment with the firm, Pacific Ice & Cold Stores. Over time the company was taken over by Peter’s Ice Cream which eventually added ice cream delivery to their agencies. Jobs were shaky around that time and Dick later found himself driving buses up and down the coast from Southport to Coolangatta. When the bus company was sold, he headed back to his former position with Peters, and after so many years in the ice & cold foods industry Dick retired aged 65 in 1979.Back in 1942, Dick’s job entailed delivering ice to homes & businesses for people’s ice chests. In a Bedford truck he would head off on the Southport & Surfers Paradise run. “Monday, Wednesday & Friday we would deliver to homes, pick out a piece of ice with your tongs and drop it in their ice chest” recalls Dick, “it was a system where the money would be left out for us, people were very reliable.” “You had your camping grounds along the coast also, at Main Beach I would drop thirty slabs of ice at a central point and campers would collect the ice and pay by way honesty system, we never had problems with payment.”In his day’s driving buses along what was the developing Gold Coast holiday strip Dick worked for Miss Peake, whom he considered a “great boss.”“Miss Peake’s ‘Cream and Green’ Bus lines eventually evolved into the Surfside Bus lines”. Surfside Buses still exist today on the tourist strip. “Driving the buses was an interesting job, you

met so many people… tourists, workers, school children” smiles Dick.In Toowoomba in 1952 the former Wallumbilla rouseabout married Joan Bischof, a lass from Boodua near Goombungee. The couple had one daughter, Robyn born in 1953, and lived in the same house at Chirn Park, Southport for 52 years. “We bought the house for £2,500, there was only half a dozen houses in the street when we moved there” said Dick.It was a very different Gold Coast in those days, scattered houses in small town suburbia dotted in some cases with market gardens. Dick was an avid gardener, “I always had gardens of vegetables, supplied our household and the neighbours”. Daughter Robyn recalls Dad’s champion lettuce, the product of Dick’s secret recipe of compost, chicken manure and TLC. There was also a humorous occasion when a helicopter was seen hovering over the Cook family’s crop of bushy Poona peas, God only knows why!Dick’s garden interest was maintained at Goomburra where he kept Phelan’s vegetable garden very productive up until 18 months ago.Coastal life appealed to Dick, an avid recreational fisherman around Southport and the nearby coastal areas. He remodelled an old sailing boat with boat builder Joe Hayward, a twenty footer with a motor, and it served its purpose for almost a decade before it was sold in Brisbane, where it survived many more years afloat. He was also a regular along the Coast’s beaches, and recall’s his best catch of a 45lb jew fish at Main Beach, “it was great fishing back then, caught some great flathead and enjoyed taylor fishing in the surf” smiles Dick. “You knew virtually everyone fishing on the beach back then”. The mere mention of the Gold Coast to people today immediately inspires images of a tourist mecca with all the development and attractions that come with the title, but Dick

Cook can clearly recall the tourist stretch in more peaceful times, just small country towns at the water’s edge. On holiday at the Coast in 1926, Dick saw the first Jubilee Bridge across the Nerang River opened. Prior to that a ferry service linked Southport and Main Beach. He again saw the opening of the current Gold Coast Highway bridge in 1969.A visit to the Coast three years back surprised Dick, “the Coast has exploded over the years, the high rise buildings and surrounding development astounding.”Considering all that is on offer on the Coast now, family outings for Dick & his family in Southport was a visit to Theodore’s Café and the Pier Picture Theatre. After retiring Dick rigged out a Mitsubishi van and along with some friends headed off travelling through North Queensland, and western areas including Longreach, Charleville & the Warrumbungle’s.Now days Dick Cook busies himself with the challenges of crosswords & Sudoku’s, a passion he has enjoyed since retirement, a little reading, some telly viewing and lots of card playing. It is somewhat ironic that the gentleman who enjoyed gardening for so much of his life has a unit that opens on to the wonderfully manicured courtyard gardens at the Homestead. He attributes his long life to keeping busy..... physically & mentally active, although long life may be a family trait, Dick’s mother Isabel Smith reaching an age of 102.A gentleman if I have ever met one, Dick Cook is also very proud of his grandchildren Katrina, Scott and Jane & their families, and looking forward to the addition of his first Great Grandchild in June. He enjoys immensely their visits, along with Robyn & Neil and his growing list of local friends. Then the crossword is discarded until later, it’s time for a chat with a man who can boast a long life that continues to be well lived.

Glyn Rees

Looking Back…Kennedy’s Flour MillLast week’s article mentioned the Sunday school picnic at Kennedy’s grain shed. The grain shed was built in 1891 on land purchased from Mr. Charles Wright who’s blacksmith’s shop (later Sam Deller and then Jock Barr) was situated where Graeme and Marie McMillan’s shed is now. Even with the 70 feet long shed, in 1894 with 5,000 bags of wheat on hand, Kennedy Bros. had to hire the show pavilion to store their wheat stocks. The mill itself was opened in 1883 by Allora storekeeping brothers Thomas, James and David Kennedy. At the time it would have been Allora’s second flour mill operating. It produced the “Three Star” brand of flour until sold in 1908 after the deaths of David and Thomas Kennedy. The mill was then operated by Barnes & Co., and according to the book “The History of Flour Milling in Queensland”, ceased operations in 1922.

1914Cost of Flying

Before one whistles for an aeroplane, as for a cab, they had better know what the fares are. Airmen and barristers are possibly the only men who can earn money at the rate of £1 per minute. Fortunes are certainly being made in the air today, especially now that passenger carrying in aeroplanes has developed into a regular business. Hamel, the only airman in England who regularly loops the loop with a passenger, is reportedly making several thousands a year. The adventure of looping the loop with him costs £50 each time. He is probably the most prosperous airman today, but the income of Hucks cannot be far behind Hamel’s. For an ordinary passenger flight Hucks charges £10/10.

Anne’s Biggest Morning TeaJust a reminder that Anne Lawson’s Biggest Morning Tea, an event that has been firmly entrenched in Allora’s community calendar for the past decade and a half, will take place at 5 Jubb Street, Allora, from 10 am on Thursday May 22nd.There’s nothing like a “cuppa” between friends at any time for a chat and catch up, but when the iconic Aussie tradition also serves to raise money to benefit such a vital organisation as the Cancer Council of Australia, it takes on a whole different meaning. Well known Allora identity Anne Lawson has been hosting “cuppas” at her home as part of the Cancer Council of Australia fundraiser, “Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea” for the past fifteen years. That the Cancer Council of Australia having raised $12.7 million last year, with the kettles boiling annually for so many

cuppas since 1994, is testament to the fact that when it comes to Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, every cup really does count in the fight against cancer. After 15 years of valiant fundraising in support of such a vital course, Anne has decided to hang up her kettle. “We have enjoyed having the yearly event” said Anne, “but as the saying goes all good things must come to an end.”“Our family have made many friends as a result of our annual Morning Tea” smiled Anne, “but without the tremendous support we have had from friends, the public and business houses we would not have enjoyed the success we have had, nor been able to support the Cancer Foundation to the level we have”.For this loyal support over many years, Anne is inviting

everyone to enjoy a cuppa for cancer support one last time.Entry to Anne Lawson’s annual “Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea” is only a gold coin donation, and those attending are requested to supply a plate, while this year the event features musical entertainment by local singer Tara Clark. For further information Anne can be contacted by phone: 4666 3562.

Allora & District Campdraft ReportAllora & District Campdraft Association (ADCA) ran a very successful Campdraft on the weekend of the 26 & 27 April, with the weather Gods providing favourable conditions for the duration of the event. The Campdraft was originally set for 5 & 6 April, however the heavy rain in late March forced the committee to postpone, due to concern over the ground conditions. The change in date also brought headaches with a large number of cattle having to be sourced from alternative donors. ADCA is extremely grateful to Mr David Brown of West Talgai feedlot for stepping into the breach and providing a great line of cattle, along with all our other donors, including John & Mary Ryan, Chris Rickert, Damien McMahon, Scott Christensen, Phil Christensen, Kevin & Di Ryan, Trish Shelton, Benn & Robyn Brown (Glengowrie Feedlot) and Rod McLennan.Saturday started with the Westco Maiden A and the Gordon Country & Allora Pharmacy Maiden B draft, with approximately 110 competitors in each. ADCA member Michael Dwan riding his stallion Brown Two Way was the eventual winner after a run off with Glenmorgan competitor, Michael Hayes riding Waderman. The victory was especially sweet for Mick as he’d placed 2nd in the Maiden the previous weekend at Cambooya Campdraft. His first round score of 90 also earned him the prize for highest scoring ADCA member over the weekend, which was a beautiful breastplate made and donated by Arthur Crumblin. The cutout was won by Roberta Fitzgerald of Toowoomba riding Sally following a run-off with three others all tied on 23. Michael Hiscock from Maffra in Victoria, who was last year’s winner of the Warwick Gold Cup, was in the judge’s seat for the Maiden A, the Restricted Open & the Open. The Maiden B draft, judged by Stew Craig of Toowoomba, was also decided after a run off between Michael Hayes riding Connor and Ben Wade from Roma on Jackie. This time Michael clinched victory and also won the highest cut-out with a 23. This was the second year that ADCA had run 2 Maiden drafts, with the idea that it provides more chances for horses to break Maiden status.By early afternoon the kids were able to saddle up to take their turn and spectators witnessed a number of very capable young cattlemen & women put cattle around a full Campdraft course under the watchful eye of judge Errol Cooper of Cunningham. The Chuckwagon Fitouts Juvenile Campdraft for competitors 13 & under 17 had a number of riders score over 80 with another runoff required between Jack Hayes riding Phil & Billy Sheppard riding Shania, both on 87. Jack was the eventual winner and also tied for 3rd & 4th places on his other horse Cinema with ADCA member Joe McMahon

riding Milly, which earned them both a prize for highest scoring Juvenile on a Maiden Horse. Run-offs seemed to be the order of the day and two Junior riders, John Schumann riding Sheedy’s Indiana and Thomas Wells on Convert both scoring 80 in the Clearview Equine Junior Draft. John claimed the blue ribbon this time by a point. Local rider and ADCA member Kira Holmes won the prize for the highest scoring young lady rider. A total of 28 horses lined up for the Coolum ASH Stud Restricted Open draft, with Michael Hiscock back in the saddle to judge. This was a one round event or “shootout” with Michael Hayes riding Delacy snaring a win by one point on 90. Craig Sheppard from Peak Crossing and Sterling claimed the cutout with a 24, pipping 5 other riders sitting on 23.Following the Restricted Open a cheque was presented to Mr Hemmo de Vries of Qld Fire and Emergency Services, which enabled the purchase of a defibrillator to go on the fire truck based in Allora. Several of the local QFES members brought the truck onto the grounds to show their appreciation of the donation from ADCA, which was from funds raised at the 2013 Campdraft. With the nearest ambulance service at least ½ hour away in either Clifton or Warwick, it is hoped that the Allora community will benefit from having this piece of vital medical equipment based locally.

Anne Lawson’s Biggest Morning Tea is on the horizon: cuppa’s, great company,

delicious food and prizes galore on Thursday, May 22nd.

As time permitted the Committee decided to start the Talgai Homestead Novice draft on Saturday afternoon, with the first 80 riders having their run and judge Maree Fields taking the whip in hand. ADCA appreciated Maree’s efforts as she had a field of over 250 horses to judge and had come to Allora en route to her new job in Tamworth starting the following Monday. Thirty riders with an 86 or better were taken back into the final with Warwick rider Aaron Williamson & Bow in first place on 174. Four horses tied for 2nd place on 173, including Clintonvale cattle donor Kevin Ryan, Warwick rider Ivan Ardrey and Jim Daley, ADCA Vice President, riding Coolum Flute and also his father Peter’s horse, Peringa Eyeliner. Unfortunately Peter had a fall in the Open just before the Novice final, which prevented him from riding in the final. Darren Rafton from Mount Marshall won the cutout on Felice with a cutout score of 24 in the first round and rode into 6th place overall with 172. Michael Hiscock once again took to the saddle to judge the Tom Cowley Memorial Open draft with 110 horses nominated and 15 horses went back into the final with a score of 87 or better. In this event, sponsored by T & G Supafloats of Warwick, Michael Hayes and Mercedes led the finalists with a 91 after the first round but unfortunately for Michael he couldn’t make it a trifecta for the weekend. The eventual winner was Michael (Buddy) Tattam from St George riding Station Masters Girlfriend on 178 with 2 consistent rounds of 89, followed very closely by 2 lady riders, Tanya Bellingham from Warwick riding Lil Clinka and Anna Hudson from Tenterfield riding Wannalook Snowonder, both on 177.The last event for the weekend as the weather deteriorated was the H-Products Encouragement draft with 20 riders, half of them being ADCA members. The winner was ADCA member Ellie McKenna, from Killarney riding Justify with a score of 83. Five out of the seven top scoring riders were members of ADCA, showing that Club training days had paid dividends. The Warwick Credit Union Bareback Cut-out was once again a feature event on Saturday night, providing great entertainment as some very well disguised riders dared to try to cut out a beast without the aid of a saddle while sporting challenging costume attire! The overall winner was ADCA member Max Turley (Alias Austin Powers), which was especially fitting as the assembled crowd had observed a minute’s silence before the Cut-out in honour of Max’s father, Peter, who passed away late last year. Peter had been a long time member of ADCA and was always on hand to help out at our annual Campdraft over the years. The committee and members of ADCA are extremely grateful to all our generous sponsors and donors that make our Campdraft a very popular and successful event. Following the presentation on Saturday night a competitor multi-draw saw heaps of riders choosing prizes ranging from horse feed, gear and clothing, all donated goods. The raffle of a $300 fuel voucher donated by Glenmar Fuels also raised a further $500 over the weekend. ADCA members are keen to donate funds raised to charity and this year has chosen to support Aussie Helpers, in addition to other charities such as Careflight. The hardworking Allora Show Society members once again provided sustenance to fuel the riders and workers throughout the weekend and put on a great dinner on Saturday night.Maiden A1 Michael Dwan, Allora, Brown Two Way 2572 Michael Hayes, Glenmorgan, Waderman 1893 Kal Bruyn, Warwick, Paper Moon 1714 Luke Collman, Plainlands, Redman 1695 Ivan Ardrey, Warwick, Honey Muffin 164

Wattles JRL match reportsAlthough our U7, U8, U9 and U12 teams all played there has been no match report handed in.U10. Eastwell & Sons Transport - A very good game from all the team against some

big boys but with some very good defense the team held thier own. Alistair did a good job directing play and steered the team around the park. There was some great running from Darcy Minnikin and Darcy Gorkow and Tobias also played well. Thanks to the u9 who held thier own in a strong game.U11. Clifton Auto Ag - A tough day at suburbs was on the cards when our team could only field 12 players and no reserves on the bench. Initially our ball handling was nothing short of terrible with a poor completion rate giving the Hornets a easy 10 point lead at the half time break. Luckily this group of boys knuckled down and played footy and with some great hard running from our player of the match Elijah Hall we quickly had Suburbs on the back foot.Elijah was assisted greatly by Darcy Gorkow and Darcy Minnikin who played hard with bruising tackles and strong running, Sam Scott was good and Liam Ruhle was giving us fantastic service dragging our players forward with many darts from dummy half. Lachlan Meacle and Ryley Lever were good in the halves and Jacob Meddleton and Michael Duncan became more composed with the ball in hand with Michael scoring twice. We ended the game with Ryley Lever being escorted from the field with a knee injury and leaving us with only 11 on the field but with a very pleasing result with a victory of 12-10.U14. Clifton Real Estate - Wattles u /14s produced their best team effort of the season with a 52-4 win over suburbs at Warwick. With an improving commitment in defence, the team defended their try line strongly. On the back of this defence the Wattles played an open attacking game with Good supporting play with a low level of errors.Captain Dylan Cullen lead from the front scoring multiple tries and was bruising in defence and was well supported by Jackson Blake who played his best game with strong charges and defence and also scored 1 try. Lauchlin Henry was again strong at the back of the pack with

Cricketer’s Celebrate SeasonThe Allora Cricket Club celebrated the 2013/14 season in grand style on Friday April 11th, and recognised the achievements of their players. At the season break-up and lawn bowls

evening at the Allora Sports Club, Allora Cricket Club President Aaron Vietheer thanked all who contributed to his clubs recently completed season. “So many have helped this year to maintain the club, mowing the field, writing the results for the paper, the Allora Advertiser for printing results, the Railway Hotel and patrons for support with raffles, the business houses who donated prizes for weekly and Christmas raffles and Alana and Jo Frizzell for all your help throughout the season, and everyone else that contributed.”The Allora Cricket Club are so very grateful to their sponsors over the past season, Allora Butchery, Railway Hotel – Allora, Allora Foodworks, Dalrymple View Apiary Supplies – Allora, Mathew & Tracey Heslin’s Bus Service – Allora, White’s Garage – Allora and David & Zita Dwan’s Allora News.Allora Cricket Club award winners for the 2013/14 Season. Most runs – Mitchell McLennanBest bowling – Kris McLennanMost catches – Sam McLennanAll rounder – Cameron MastersMost Improved – Stew HendersonMost enthusiastic – Al Taylor

Players Player - Mitchell McLennanThe ‘Railway Hotel’ Allora ‘Rascals’ celebrated their season with a social game at the Allora cricket Oval on Sunday afternoon, before a presentation ceremony at Allora’ s Railway Hotel.‘Rascals’ Captain Brad Johnson heaped praise on his players, many still school age who have achieved in the past season against high level competition. The ‘Rascals’ extend a vote of thanks to their supporters and those who assisted through the year, and sponsors Robyn Miles’ Railway Hotel – Allora, Red Rooster, Cookhaul-Allora and Denise Dalgleish’s Blue Cow Hotel-Allora.

Matt Christensen, Michael Lasserre and Rory Moat producing big games. All players contributed well to the win and are continuing to develop as a team week to weekU16. Carlowrie Park Stud - The Carlowrie Park Under 16’s started well attacking Suburbs line but couldn’t score and put valuable early points on the board. The game changed and the boys spent plenty of time in their own half defending the line, letting in a try out wide and then another in the middle. A Wattles mistake in play saw Suburbs score another quick try to skip away to a 16 – 0 lead. The team showed glimpses of their good attack and hard running back rower Ben Johnston was rewarded with his first try wearing the green and gold. Leading into half time we couldn’t match Suburbs size and speed and they scored another try out wide bringing the score to 20 – 6.After halftime we let in a soft try through the middle before Tom Morris scooted from the scrum to score a good individual try. An easy try to Suburbs was a big reminder to all players that you must play to the referee’s whistle. Brad Ranger did plenty of work up the middle and a quick play from dummy half saw the ball spread wide for Michael Kelk to score in the corner. Injuries started to play a part in the game which resulted in some position shuffling but the boys are to be commended for not giving up. The final score was 30- 16 but we actually drew with Suburbs 10 all in the second half which was a pleasing result. The team effort was reflected in the fact that Brad Ranger, Tim Duggan and Max Rubie all shared the Player’s Player points.

Warwick and District Chargers Trial Games in St GeorgeU13 Chargers contain 2 Wattles boys in Regan Eastwell and Tyler Gillam. They both played a strong hand in their teams 36-14 win over the South West Stockmen and showed dramatic improvement on last weeks game against Toowoomba. This coming weekend these boys will travel to Chinchilla to play in the Mustangs Selection Trials and we wish them well.U14 Chargers also contain 2 Wattles Boys in Dylan Hounslow Cullen and Tyler Davie. They played competitive football in a team that was out muscled by a very big Stockmen side.U16 Chargers contain 1 Wattles boy in Khan Ladbrook who I am led to believe played outstanding football in a strong team effort that saw the Chargers win 26-24.Good luck to these 5 boys for next weekend.

Jacko Tastes Championship SuccessClassy Wattles Rugby League Club fullback Jackson Green was a member of the all conquering Toowoomba ‘Clydesdales’ that took out the annual Central Division 47th Battalion Trophy Carnival over last weekend in Gladstone.Green, the son of former Wynnum-Manly ‘Seagulls’ winger Warren Green, has had a scintillating start to the 2014 Toowoomba Rugby League season, the ‘Warriors’ in form fullback his club’s highest try-scorer with nine touchdowns from six fixtures.Wattles players halfback Matt Duggan, prop Pat Manley and centre Joel Koina were also selected in the ‘Clydesdales’, but withdrew due to injury & work.Quicksilver back Green was part of the ‘Clydesdales’ line up that achieved two Central Division Championships in three years when they outclassed Bundaberg 38-4 in Sunday’s final at Gladstone’s Marley-Brown Oval. That win was the Clydesdales’ fourth for the weekend as they won all of their matches over the two-day carnival. In other results Toowoomba defeated home side Gladstone 22 – 16, Wide Bay Northern Districts 42 – 0 & Sunshine Coast 38 – 10.Sean Loxley carved up in the final scoring three tries and his combination in the halves with Stanthorpe based Gatton

‘Hawks’ player Jason Wilmot, who was named Player of the Tournament, was one aspect of the great Clydesdales performance. Bundaberg had a strong record in 47th Battalion Trophy finals, but the ‘Clydesdales’ took them out of the game with a stellar effort in the decider. Coach Dean Bosnich thought playing a trial match in the pre-season and getting the squad together more than previous years was a big boost. And he also thought the balance in the squad was telling. “We had a very good mixture this year. Most years the Toowoomba team is a bit smaller, but this year we were big and had speed and skill,” Bosnich said. Six ‘Clydesdales’ players were named in the Central Division ‘Crows’ open representative side at the end of the Carnival in Jason Wilmot, Sean Loxley, Paul T’aala, Bryce Denman, Mitchell Carpenter and Eugene Seddon. After a weekend’s break the Wattles ‘Warriors’ are back on stage this weekend in what will be a challenging stoush at Father Ranger Oval against the Warwick ‘Cowboys’.The ‘Cowboys’ spirits will be up given it is a weekend of celebration, a Saturday night function at Warwick’s St. Mary’s Hall recognising 100 years of rugby league in the Warwick area.Warwick are coming off a handy 20 – 12 win over the Valley’s ‘Roosters’ in Round 6, and will lift as always for the local derby at home against Wattles.‘Warriors’ coach Luke Duggan is hoping to have his full compliment on the paddock this Sunday and continue on their winning way, after six wins from six outings since the season commenced. With three more Rounds to play, Wattles are in prime position to contest their first Madsen-Rasmussen Shield on June 8th, since they defeated Brothers for the prestigious mid-year silverware in 2005.This Sunday’s fixtures in Warwick kick-off at 10.30 am with Under 18 followed by the ‘C’ Grade clash between Warwick & Millmerran, before Reserve Grade at 1.10 pm and A Grade at 2.30 pm.The ‘Warriors’ next home game at Platz Oval is on Sunday May 25th against Pittsworth.

FACE-LIFT FOR THE SPORTS CLUBOver the past 3 months, the Allora Sports Club has been refurbished, with both the sports bar and dining room having been re-painted and re-decorated.The Sports Club committee decided that the club décor was becoming tired and it needed to become more contemporary to encourage new patrons to visit and old patrons to return.Whilst not all the bowls memorabilia remains on display, the committee has been very careful to preserve the club’s strong bowls history and as such a tribute to the early days of the Bowls Club takes pride of place in the sports bar. The dining room has been totally transformed into an upmarket function centre with polished floor boards, curtains and artwork creating an inviting and relaxed atmosphere. The Sports Club also has plans to install a new and state of the art commercial kitchen to ensure that functions with large numbers of guests can be more easily accommodated. The club committee would like to acknowledge a great team of local tradesman who assisted with the renovations. They are Jamie Mutch Joinery, Paul Parker Painting, Kev Harrison Plumbing, Paul Davey Electrical, Gordon

Turner Sign writing and George Cassar Floor Sanding and Polishing. The committee also acknowledges the work of volunteers Max Bielefeld and Graham Whittaker who had a knack of turning up at the very time the most difficult jobs needed to be done. The location of the Sports Club is certainly one of the best in Allora, situated on the banks of the Dalrymple Creek and in the shadow of the Allora Mountain. With the renovations, Allora Sports Club members undoubtedly have a club that they can be proud of and one that is a credit to the entire Allora community. The committee is keen to showcase the “new” club and have organised a Cabaret and Tapas evening on Saturday 7th June, starting at 6.00 PM. It will be a great evening with fine food and top class entertainment and everyone is very welcome to come along. If you arrange a table of eight it will cost only $25.00 per head. Tickets can be purchased at the Allora Newsagency. For Sports Club bookings please contact Wendy on 0437 342 870.
