The staff and lay leadership of our J is among the most passionate and committed you will ever meet. Committed to providing excellent customer service, and also to managing programs effectively and efficiently. Passionate about developing innovative ideas and solutions to the challenges associated with operating (and competing) in each of our five core lines of service. And committed to going that extra mile to answer questions, make suggestions, and modify where possible so that everyone who wants to use the J can be welcomed here.

As we reflect on leadership at the J, we acknowledge that it is demonstrated in many ways: by a J Day Camp counselor who takes the time to welcome a first-time camper, by a personal trainer who encourages a new client, by youth staff at Camp Sabra who comforts a homesick child. We often think of leadership as a top-line management function, but we at the J know every staff member and lay leader can make hundreds of decisions over a year that will directly impact our members and participants.

We would be unable to create and deliver the life-changing programs and services we offer without the unwavering support and generosity of our volunteers, donors, funders, sponsors, partners and board. On behalf of our 1,200 staff members and the 70,000+ individuals we serve each year, thank you.

Celebrating Sababa

Something noteworthy happens nearly every day at the J, but a standout in 2018 was the inaugural SABABA Festival.

As the Jewish population becomes more diverse and less likely to affiliate with a synagogue as previous generations did, Jewish organizations must innovate and create opportunities and experiences that invite people to connect with their Jewish community.

In partnership with Jewish Federation of St. Louis, the J took the lead and created Sababa - St. Louis’ premier Jewish Arts & Culture Festival. Held outdoors at Washington University, Sababa showcased the vibrancy of contemporary Jewish culture. The festival featured local, regional and national visual art exhibitors, culinary experiences and musical performances, as well as activities from local Jewish organizations. More than 30 organizations partnered with us!

Several volunteer committees, organized by the J, worked for months to create an amazing opportunity for the community to come together and experience the local, Jewish “cool factor,” through food, art and music.

Attendance estimates topped 3,000, and the festival was so successful, it has earned a bi-annual future on the St. Louis Fall Festival scene.

Jewish Life

800 pedestriansNearly 800 people walked one mile together and gathered for an afternoon of Jewish education, entertainment and food (of course) to celebrate Israel’s 70th birthday! This bold effort required coordination across the community – synagogues, schools, Jewish agencies and local law enforcement worked together to execute this show of support for the state of Israel and the Jewish people.

325 leaders Song Leader Boot Camp, our unique leadership program, continues to grow! Rabbis, cantors, song leaders and other educators spend an action-packed holiday weekend at the J to learn skills and techniques they can take home and use to inspire their communities. SLBC has gained attention nationally – recently it caught the attention of Brandeis University, who will evaluate the impact of this extraordinary program.

3,000 peopleSABABA, the first-time festival of Jewish Arts and Culture was created to engage and inspire pride in the Jewish community. Artists and restaurants showcased their wares, and more than 3,000 people were treated to performances by the Maccabeats and other national acts on a joyous Sunday afternoon!

Cultural Arts

139 spotlightsHere is an amazing fact: The J hosts a cultural arts experience every two and a half days! We take our culture seriously (and sometimes, not so seriously) and work incredibly hard throughout the year to present high caliber performances, compelling film screenings, engaging author talks, and other soul-stirring opportunities through New Jewish Theatre, Jewish Book Festival, Jewish Film Festival, Gesher Music Festival, Youth Theatre and Theatre Unlimited.

Fitness

Unlimited There is no one workout that works for everyone, so we offer an unlimited number of combinations that our members can access to help them improve and maintain their good health: Personal Training, Signature boot camp training, Pilates, yoga, swimming, cycling… the list goes on. We work hard to engage each member as they join – because as soon as they find their favorite workout and find the friends who share their goals and enthusiasm, we’ve made a connection we know will last.

10,424 classesOur nationally certified Group Ex instructors offered our members more than 10,000 opportunities to make friends, and be supportive and accountable to each other in a sweaty community setting. Music, motivation and inventive workout methods keep members coming back for more – that, and GX classes are included in membership!

Sports, Recreation & Aquatics

6,942 lessonsThe J is known for its effective and innovative aquatics program. We create lifelong swimmers, whether a person starts at six weeks or 60 years. Last year, we worked with more than 715 children and adults to increase their confidence and comfort in the water. And we trained 43 lifeguards, too!

2,581 awardsWhat started as a one-time way to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the J is now a decades-long tradition. At the 39th Annual St. Louis Senior Olympics, we distributed more than 2,500 medals and ribbons to 1,100 athletes ages 50 and better. They come from all over the region to compete in events like swimming, track and field, and the football toss, but equally important is the sportsmanship, camaraderie and celebration of health they find each year.

1,800 ballersThe J’s youth basketball program attracts kids aged 3-17 from all across the St. Louis area. Of course, the volunteer coaches teach skills like shooting, passing and dribbling – but more important are the lessons in friendship, teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership the athletes learn.

Early Childhood Center

4 trimestersThe “fourth trimester” presents the perfect opportunity for mothers with infants to connect with each other and receive the parenting support of our Family Center. Imanu, or “Our Mothers,” is the umbrella program that also offers lactation support and nursing mothers’ groups. Imanu supports dozens of Jewish families with these services.

7 elementsThe J partners with JCC Association’s Sheva Center, which supports an innovative approach to early childhood education that empowers teachers and directors, and positions our Early Childhood Education Centers as models of excellence. Some of these elements are: Children as Constructivist Learners, Early Childhood Directors as Visionaries, Early Childhood Educators as Professionals, and Families as Engaged Partners. Sheva is exclusive to the J, and in coordination with our Project Construct academic and Conscious Discipline socio-emotional curricula, prepares our children for a masterful kindergarten experience.

300 hoursThe basic principles of science ignite the spark of wonder and spirit of experimentation in children, and we start the love of learning science early at the J! We teach 300 hours of “hands on” science to students in our Early Childhood Centers each year. Whether they’re inspecting insects in our gardens or watching tadpoles develop in our aquariums, our children are learning to ask good questions and think critically and scientifically.

Senior Services

52.5 hoursWhen people are caring for a spouse or parent who is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia disorders, they can be consumed with worry about leaving their loved one during the day, yet they must work and be able to manage their households. Our licensed Adult Day Connections program offers extended hours – and peace of mind – for families and caregivers. Research shows that adult day programs help reduce levels of depression and anxiety, improve physical health, allow caregivers to take better care of themselves, and lower levels of family stress that can lead to premature aging.

10,300 mealsA meal should be a basic, sacred and essential part of a person’s day – for nutritional and social benefits. Kitchen J provided this physically and emotionally satisfying experience more than 10,000 times last year. Two thousand, five hundred meals of these were delivered to homebound seniors, and enabled conversations that may have been that individual’s only human contact that day.

Day & Resident Camping

174,244 hoursCamp Sabra is proud to have helped its 736 campers AVOID more than 174,000 hours of screen time last summer by providing a joyous outdoor Jewish community that replaces Youtube and Xbox with tubing, skiing, sailing, swimming, land sports, drama, arts and crafts, tarbut, ropes courses, hiking, cooking, singing…

4 generations of familiesYou know it’s summer at the J when hundreds of campers hop off the couch and head to the J to see new and old friends, learn new skills, express their creativity, improve their swimming, and spend quality time, outdoors, on our beautiful campuses. We provided a memorable day camp experience to more than 800 children in 2018!

612 nightsOff-duty Camp Sabra counselors spent 612 glorious, air conditioned nights in a brand new staff lounge. Sabra staff works with children 24/7, and were thrilled to have a dedicated space that offered some creature comforts – and a/c – on their nights off. And you know what they say… happy staff = happy campers!

Inclusion

35 shining starsTheatre Unlimited, our amazing, barrier-free theatre program for adults with disabilities, offered 35 adults the opportunity to sing, dance and act on stage in front of sold-out crowds. Our participants work with theatre professionals for months to prepare for these productions, and many of them starred in 10 or more shows!

10,680 hoursWe provide more than 10,000 hours of 1:1 support to people of all ages with disabilities each year. This allows our programs, such as J Day Camps and personal training, to be as inclusive as possible; offers our participants amazing experiences; and provides families with peace of mind that their loved ones are being cared for in a safe and welcoming environment.

100 percentOne hundred percent of J Day Camp families who receive inclusion support for their children reported satisfaction with our program, according to a survey by the Productive Living Board. We are extremely proud that families who entrust their children to the J not only rate us so highly in surveys, but also recommend us in the community.

1,637 heroesThere is no way we could offer as many fantastic programs and services to our community without the help of our amazing volunteers. Young and old, working and retired, they donated more than 18,000 hours last year – tending the Garden of Eden, coaching youth basketball, helping organize the Jewish Book and Jewish Film Festivals, timing and counting laps at the Kids’ Triathlon…and so much more.

Operations

780 chatsOur members and program participants are communicating with us differently than they did even a couple years ago. Much less likely to jump on the phone, many people choose to chat us up online instead - asking how to sign up for classes, what fitness programs we would recommend, where they might find a Hebrew tutor for their child, inquiring about the temperature of our indoor pools, and much more. We aren’t just evolving our programs to meet the needs of our community, we’re rethinking all the ways we do business.

28,000 towelsConsider the basic white gym towel. An amazing perk of membership, we provide, launder, fold and distribute towels all day long, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year. Our laundry is a business within our business.

Scholarship Programs

The St. Louis J provides scholarship support for people in need to participate in programs of the J. Adult Services scholarships enable more than 2,000 older citizens to participate in nutrition programs, social and recreational activities and daily care.

More than one-third of our Early Childhood Center families receive scholarship assistance.

Celebrating Leadership Donor Spotlight: Sheila and Al Rosenfeld

What is your connection to the J and Camp Sabra?Al attended Camp Hawthorne in 1947, and he has many memories of overnight canoe trips and friendships he made. He remembers one specific Friday night Shabbat dinner – the Camp Director asked if anyone knew what a hazzan was and Al, sitting real far away, understood him to say “chazzer” and promptly said “pig.” Everybody laughed, of course, and Al learned not to volunteer information!

Sheila spent two, truly memorable summers (8-week sessions) at Camp Wah Kon Dah. She remembers exposure to many new activities, learning to water ski, overnight canoe trips, sleeping in tents and fishing for trout. Camp always ended with “Red and Black Week,” in which the whole camp was divided into two teams and competed in every imaginable activity.

Because we remembered having such great experiences at camp, we decided to send our daughter, Amy to Camp Sabra to meet new friends, participate in new activities and, most importantly, share Shabbat in a meaningful way.

Why are you inspired to give to camp?Giving to Camp Sabra is important to us. Al was able to go to camp at a much-reduced rate of $25/week, which was subsidized by more affluent Jewish families. This is our way of giving back so that other children are able to attend.

What is your hope for the future of our community, camp, etc?It is our hope that Camp Sabra can continue to reinforce Jewish beliefs and customs so that Judaism will thrive for generations to come.

The J’la

We were overjoyed at the way our community came together to support the J’s efforts to raise money for scholarships at the 2018 J’la. We provide more than $500,000 in scholarship support annually so people with financial challenges are able to take advantage of the high-quality programs we offer. We were pleased to honor the Siwak Family at this year’s event. This wonderful family in our community has been giving of their time, talent and treasures for generations. We are tremendously thankful to the Siwaks (Nancy and Al Siwak, Gianna Jacobson and Todd Siwak, Roger Siwak, Stacy and Greg Siwak, and Erin and Steve Schuver) for their leadership and vision.

This game-themed event, co-chaired by Wendy and Mark Gellman, Michelle and Jeff Cohen, and Lisa and Art Weiss, provided entertainment including a casino, life size games, classic games, raffles, an interactive graffiti photo wall, silent auction and an exciting live auction that offered trips, an electric bike and autographed pieces of art.

We were thrilled and extremely grateful that our community helped us raise nearly $300,000 that will benefit thousands of participants through programs such as J Day Camps, our Early Childhood Centers, Adult Day programs, Camp Sabra, Inclusion services and more.

Since 1985, the J Associates have continuously supported the Jewish Community Center by raising funds for scholarships, programs, equipment and supplies. This incredible women’s auxiliary group of more than 500 members supports the J in many ways. Their biggest event of 2018, Lip Sync Live, featured popular music performed (lip synced) by local volunteers and choreographed by celebrity coaches.

Thanks to the J Associates, we were able to:

• Provide J Day Camps and personal training scholarships for participants with disabilities

• Fund a new aqua obstacle course that many different departments use to enhance their programs

• Support our Jewish Film Festival by providing seniors of limited means with a film ticket and transportation to a screening

• Fund a health center vehicle at Camp Sabra to transport medical personnel and patients in case of emergency

• Provide an outdoor science and math classroom for our Early Childhood Centers, giving hundreds of children an early and impactful STEM learning experience

For these and so many other reasons, we are grateful for the partnership and leadership of the J Associates!
