Celebrating Learning

Celebrating Learning Principal Awards

Congratulations to Lucas, Scarlett, Austin, Ella and Poppy who have been awarded Principal Awards this week.

Welcome to Term 4 at Redhead Public School Welcome back for the final term of learning for 2015 at Redhead Public School.

This term we welcome Ellis to Delta, AJ to Iota and Noah to Lambda.

Unfortunately, Mrs Bowd has had to take some leave to recuperate after an injury. Sigma is being taught by Mrs Sarah Griffiths on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday Mrs Arelene Webb is teaching and Mrs Salena Langholz will continue as their Friday teacher.

Kidsmatter – Every Face Has a Place October is “Mental Health Month.” We are proud to be a Kidsmatter school – where the focus is on achieving the very best for our students and our community on a holistic level.

The launch date for Kidsmatter is Friday 23 October. It will be a great day of activities with parents and the community joining in from lunchtime.

Thank you to Mrs Debbie Linnert who has enthusiastically

taught all of our students a dance that will be a part of our

celebrations on our launch day.

Mrs Tracey Smith is designing an art project for the day that will result in a new mural for our school based on the theme, “Every Face Has A Place.”

The Redhead Men’s Shed are going to help out by cooking a BBQ lunch. Attached to this newsletter is an order form for sausage sandwiches. Lunch is a celebration of the launch of “Kidsmatter” so we are only asking for $1.00 to assist with covering the cost of the ingredients. Orders and payments must be in by Monday 19 October.

Other parents and community members are being invited to share their talents and expertise with our school community on the day to assist with the celebration focus for the afternoon.

Assembly Tomorrow at assembly we will have two items. One presented by Phi and one by our drumming group. Certificates for outstanding achievement in the University of NSW examinations in English and Mathematics will be presented.

Our assembly commences at 2.15pm on Friday in our school hall.

Laptop Payment Term 4 laptop payment of $60 is now due. Children are not permitted to take their laptops home until payments are up to date.

Peaceful Playgrounds Project Our playground is large and leafy. We have room to play a variety of games, climbing equipment, a sandpit and the library for a range of indoor activities. A recent survey of the K-5 students was conducted to determine if and how we could improve upon our playground.

A chill out zone complete with beautiful pillows made by Harper Collins-Fry and his mum, Tracey, was a very popular choice. The children can hang out under the trees to read or chat.

The outdoor chess set is returning to the COLA area. A dress up box is also being collated. Any donations are welcome.

A range of small fields have been marked on the playground to equitably share the space for games such as soccer. This also has allowed for some clear thoroughfares for students and staff to move around the playground.

The Student Representative Council have suggested rules for games such as handball, build-ups and tips. The staff have reviewed these this morning and they should be ready for implementing tomorrow. They will be displayed in key locations around our school.

Other suggestions are under consideration and it will be exciting to watch the developments in Term 4.

WiFi Over the holiday break our school had a WiFi upgrade. We are happy to report that now all classrooms and learning spaces have wireless access for student learning. This process has readied our school for the future.

World of Maths Visit We have the exciting opportunity of hosting World of Maths at our school next week. World of Maths is a unique traveling maths show that provides fun, colourful, hands-on, mathematical, problem solving activities for student participation. For the price of a gold coin donation, each student will have the opportunity to access this wonderful hands-on learning experience. On Monday, students from Lambda, Iota, Kappa, Epsilon and Phi will visit the hall and be the first to experience the excitement. On Tuesday, Omega, Sigma, Chi, Alpha, Delta, Gamma and Theta students will get their opportunities.

Due to our World of Maths visit we will not be having an infant’s assembly next week and children will be picked up from their classes.

Footy Fever Day On the last day of Term 3, Redhead Public School

students participated in Footy Fever

Day. Students wore jerseys from every code of football around the world and rotated through a flurry of football inspired drills and skills in the middle

session. They were also given the opportunity to have a

dedicated training

session with NRL development trainers as well as a talk from some of the Newcastle Jets players. It was a great way to finish another successful term. Thank you peer support leaders for your fantastic efforts coordinating your groups and supporting younger students. Well done!

P & C Meeting Our next P & C meeting will be held this coming Monday night, 12 October, commencing at 7.00pm in our library.

The educational focus for this meeting will be our Kidsmatter Launch and our Peaceful Playground focus.

There will also be discussion about amending our school uniform to include a skort for girls.

At each of our P & C meetings we will be reviewing a policy. The policy for review in October is our Redhead Public School Uniform Policy.

Everyone is welcome to come along.

Keys Found A set of Volkswagen keys has been found and handed into the school office.

Library News I am looking forward to an exciting term in the library. Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 will be doing an author study and also looking at how countries

around the world celebrate. Stage 2 will be learning research skills and how to organise information through a study of communities and their beliefs. Stage 3 will be learning how to analyse research questions and use online sources to provide answers in a science focus area. Stage 3 will also be studying coding as the term draws to a close.

Over the next two weeks I will be sending home reminders about overdue library books. Students need to return overdue books before they can borrow. Library stocktake will begin in Week 9 so all borrowing will cease Week 8. Please search out those missing books.

Part of the new library shelving has arrived with more to arrive shortly. It is already freeing the space for collaborative learning and paving the way for a flexible learning area.

Talent Quest Each year the students of Redhead Public School astound us with their talents in our annual talent quest. The winners of the talent quest perform at MADD night on Monday 14 December. Each stage will have auditions at lunchtime in Week 8 and from that group students will be selected to perform at our talent quest final on Thursday 26 November.

The talent quest is a sharing of talent and is a positive experience for our creative students. We encourage everyone to ensure that when preparing for the talent quest they also demonstrate all our getting along skills so that it is a wonderful experience for all.

Students need to provide music on a disc or USB. Please do not send students to school with ipods. For safety reasons we cannot have acts that include tumbling or acrobatics.

Below are the audition dates for each stage. We look forward to enjoying the creative talents of our students. It is always a highlight for the year.

Stage 3 23 November

Stage 2 24 November

Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 25 November

If you have any queries please direct them to Mrs Langholz or Mrs Williams.

Keeping your Mobile Number Current at our School At our school if there is a need to communicate with our parents during an emergency we send an SMS message through our computer system. It is important that we have everyone’s current mobile phone number in our system. If you have recently changed your number, please let our administration staff know.

Debating Our next and final debate for the year will be against Charlestown East Public School on Thursday 15 October at Charlestown East Public School beginning at 9.00am. Students who are involved in this debate received notes before the end of term. Please return notes promptly so that transport can be arranged.

We have had a great time learning to debate this year, it has been a wonderful learning experience for all. It has not only developed confidence and public speaking skills but also taught us how to form paragraphs and organise coherent ideas. Well done debaters!

Special Swimming Scheme Our Special Swimming Scheme is now full and will commence on 26 October and run for 10 days. Please pay the balance of $110 to the school office by Friday 9 October.

Yarn Group Our next Yarn Group meeting will be held on Monday 19 October at 6.00pm in the staffroom.
