Grand Lobby
Dear Florida Democrats,
My warmest best wishes to you - and welcome to my home town! It is wonderful to have you here as we celebrate our new Democratic leadership!
There is no better time to celebrate being a Democrat, not just because the Florida Democratic Party has never been stronger or more vital, and not just because President Clinton is moving the country away from 1 2 years of regressive Republican policies, but also because Jefferson/ Jackson Day has traditionally given Democrats the opportunity to celebrate the ideals and principles on which this great party was founded.
Thomas Jefferson best stated the ideal which serves as the cornerstone of Democratic philosophy when he wrote in the Bill of Rights, "A Bill of Rights is what the people are entitled to against every government on earth, and what no just government should refuse."
Andrew Jackson is honored today because as President he was the first to publicly call himself a Democrat and helped establish the Democratic Party as the "Party of the People."
Today, the Florida Democratic Party has never been a finer example of the "Party of the People." We are rebuilding at the grassroots level -involving people from all walks of life. We're revitalizing the DEC's and reaching out to younger voters, training our best and brightest, and working closely with our elected officials. And we're already gearing up at the state and local level for next year's elections here in Florida.
In addition, President Clinton's commitment to giving government back to the people of America has resulted in a renewed energy and drive for Democrats in Florida, and elsewhere across the United States.
We are proud of our heritage, our ideals, and our vision of an active government working on behalf of all the people - not just a few special interests.
Let's keep up the good work to ensure that the voices and interests of all Floridians continue to be heard - in the Governor's office, the Cabinet, the House and Senate, and in Washington.
Sincerely,
tJ Terrie W. Brady Chair o/

HISTORY OF THE FLORIDA DEMOCRATIC PARTY
Democrats have been active in Florida since the U.S. acquired the territory from Spain in 1819. Although a staunch Democrat - Andrew Jackson - served as Florida's first territorial governor, the Florida Democratic Party did not officially come into existence until it was chartered with the national Democratic Party in 1840.
From 1840 through the 1860' s, the disintegration of the Whig Party led to the rise of the Republican Party, and challenges to Democratic candidates nationwide. However, Republicans met with little success in Florida. As the Whig Party continued to disintegrate, most Floridians became Democrats.
After the Civil War, Florida Democrats strove for a period of normalcy, nominating candidates and trying to gain support in general elections. In 1876, George Franklin Drew gained the Governor's office for the Democrats by polling 200 more votes than his Republican opponent. Within a year, Democrats had regained control of enough state offices to end carpetbag rule when federal troops were withdrawn in 1877.
In 1885, Floridians adopted a new constitution which paved the way for Florida's fantastic growth. Within a year, Henry Flagler had begun his East Coast Railroad to West Palm Beach, and later extended it to Miami and Key West. During the last two decades of the nineteenth century, the names of many people still recognized and respected in Florida history became prominent as rapid progress in industry and development continued.
In the 1930's, Florida faced some of the bleakest days the state has known since Reconstruction. A devastating hurricane, the collapse of land sales, and the great depression all hurt Florida. But Governor Doyle Carlton's leadership helped lift the state out of hard times. Also in the 1930's, Florida elected its first woman to serve in Congress - Ruth Bryan Owen.
During World War II and years immediately following, Florida was guided by excellent Democratic leadership. Governor Spessard Holland led the state as it played a key role in the country's defense. He was succeeded in 1944 by Governor
Millard Caldwell, who helped established Everglades National Park in 1947.
In the 1950's and 60's, Florida's prosperity and growth - as well as its tradition of excellent Democratic leadership - continued. In the 1950's, Governor LeRoy Collins became the first American governor to serve simultaneously as chairman of the Southern Governor's Conference and the National Governor's Conference. He aided the state's economic and educational systems by creating the State Development Commission, expanding Florida's community college system, and sponsoring educational television and science programs. Other noted Democrats who led or represented Florida during this period of growth include legislator and - later - Governor Farris Bryant, Governor Haydon Bums, and Senator Claude Pepper.
The Democratic tradition of excellence in leadership has continued over the past two decades. In the 70's, Florida led the way for open government by creating - under the leadership of Governor Reubin Askew - the state's "Sunshine Laws", which made it illegal to conduct state business in private. Former two-term governor and now U.S. Senator Bob Graham has shown his commitment to Florida's environment by establishing the Save Our Everglades, Rivers, and Coasts efforts. Governor Lawton Chiles has been commended for his ground- breaking reforms in government accountability, health care, and prenatal and postnatal care.
The Florida Democratic Party is continuing its tradition of welcoming all Floridians to the political table. Commissioner Betty Castor is not only Florida's first Education Commissioner, but also the first woman elected to the state's Cabinet. Representative Carrie Meek, Florida's first African-American female elected to the state Senate, is now Florida's first African-American to serve in Congress since Reconstruction.
The Florida Democratic Party can boast of a proud past and a bright future. As we face the 21st century with a Democratic President, Congress, and Governor - the Florida Democratic Party will continue to grow with optimism and hope for the people of Florida and the United States.
