We also conti nue to look for ways to expand our educati onal themes and enhance the visitor’s experience through new programs and exhibits.

In 2015, we are partnering with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Upper Mississippi Nati onal Wildlife and Fish Refuge for a new exhibit interpreti ng the conservati on history and importance of

that Refuge.

Perhaps the biggest change coming in 2015 is our eagle care expansion. We will be leasing

space in a nearby building to provide our se-nior eagle ambassador, Harriet, with reti re-ment housing suited to her current needs brought on by her advanced age. In addi-ti on, we’ll be able to house and train new eagles to prepare them to be the next great eagle ambassadors.

All of this is supported by an all volunteer Board of Directors working in eff ecti ve part-

nership with professional staff . In the past year we expanded the Board to 13 very engaged mem-

bers who have focused on issues of organizati onal gov-ernance, strategic planning and fundraising. Board and staff

are proud of the Nati onal Eagle Center’s accomplishments and excited to work together on our very bright future.

And we would especially like to thank the hundreds of members, donors and volunteers who support the mission and work of the Nati onal Eagle Center everyday!

A Vision Takes Flight: A History of the Nati onal Eagle Center 1989-2014

The book chronicles the growth of the organizati on from its days as Eaglewatch, with volunteers spotti ng eagles from a wooden observati on deck along the river, to the organizati on that now inhabits a 15,000 square foot interpreti ve center that greets 75,000 visitors each year from around the world.

“The story of the Nati onal Eagle Center illustrates the power of community working together to make great things happen” says Nati onal Eagle Center Executi ve Director, Rolf Thompson. Au-thors CJ Jacobson and Peg Bauernfeind capture the community feeling in A Vision Takes Flight. Through interviews with early supporters and volunteers, they tell the story of how the vision came to be what is today the Nati onal Eagle Center.

2014 has been a landmark year for the Nati onal Eagle Center. We celebrated our 25th year as an organizati on. Originally founded in 1989 as Eaglewatch (sti ll our

corporate name), we have grown from a group of committ ed volun-

teers helping visitors view eagles from an outdoor observati on deck, to the world-class interpreti ve center you know today. This anniversary and the publicati on of A Vision Takes Flight: A History of the Nati onal Eagle Cen-ter 1989-2014 were opportuniti es to look back and see how far we’ve come, but also to consider how we will conti nue to soar.

This year we launched our fi rst new permanent exhibit since our grand opening in 2007. Masters of the Sky: Raptors, Flight and Migrati on broadens our educati onal reach and helps visitors understand the diversity of raptors that share this Upper Mississippi River habitat.

2014 also marked the 10th annu-al Wintering Golden Eagle Survey. This groundbreaking project has liter-ally changed the range maps for golden eagles in the Midwest, by documenti ng a regular wintering presence here in southeast Minnesota and the surrounding bluffl ands. We are excited to conti nue to expand the world’s knowledge of this majes-ti c species through conti nued surveys, fi eld observati ons and tracking of individual birds with satellite transmitt ers.

As we look to the future we can see that there is more to do. In keeping with our strategic prioriti es to extend our edu-cati onal reach, we are developing curriculum based lesson

SOAR with the EaglesOur SOAR with the Eagles festi val in March is our biggest event of the year. With fl ying bird shows every week-end and dozens of special programs, we reached an audience of just over 10,000 people in the month of March.

Eagles Honoring Veterans

On Veterans Day weekend we welcomed all veterans and acti ve duty members of the military with a fl ag raising ceremony and complimentary admission. One of our bald eagle ambassadors was also present at Wabasha’s Memorial Day commemorati on. And in quarterly visits to the VA hospital in Minneapolis, we of-fered the chance for wounded veterans to meet our nati on’s symbol.

At the end of 2014, our senior eagle ambassador Harriet, challenged us to raise the funds for an expansion of our eagle care faciliti es.

Members of our Board of Directors and special friends agreed to match donati ons in November and December, up to $31,000. In all more than 350 donors stepped forward to help us meet Harriet’s Challenge, and exceed the matching goal!

Eagles Honoring Veterans

On Veterans Day weekend we welcomed all veterans and acti ve duty members of the military with a fl ag raising ceremony and complimentary admission. One of our bald eagle ambassadors was also present at Wabasha’s Memorial Day commemorati on. And in quarterly visits to the VA hospital in Minneapolis, we of-fered the chance for wounded veterans to meet our nati on’s symbol.

SOAR with the EaglesOur SOAR with the Eagles festi val in March is our biggest event of the year. With fl ying bird shows every week-end and dozens of special programs, we reached an audience of just over 10,000 people in the month of March.

SOAR with the Eagles Raffl e raised more than $9,000 and off ered great prizes including a Wenonah Canoe, Vortex binoculars and an AmericInn Suite stay.

plans for teachers to use in the class-room to enhance their students’ visit to the Nati onal Eagle Center.

We also conti nue to look for ways to expand our educati onal themes and enhance the visitor’s experience through new programs and exhibits.

In 2015, we are partnering with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Upper Mississippi Nati onal Wildlife and Fish Refuge for a new exhibit interpreti ng the conservati on history and importance of

that Refuge.

Perhaps the biggest change coming in 2015 is our eagle care expansion. We will be leasing

space in a nearby building to provide our se-nior eagle ambassador, Harriet, with reti re-ment housing suited to her current needs brought on by her advanced age. In addi-ti on, we’ll be able to house and train new eagles to prepare them to be the next great eagle ambassadors.

All of this is supported by an all volunteer Board of Directors working in eff ecti ve part-

nership with professional staff . In the past year we expanded the Board to 13 very engaged mem-

bers who have focused on issues of organizati onal gov-ernance, strategic planning and fundraising. Board and staff

are proud of the Nati onal Eagle Center’s accomplishments and excited to work together on our very bright future.

A Vision Takes Flight: A History of the Nati onal Eagle Center 1989-2014

The book chronicles the growth of the organizati on from its days as Eaglewatch, with volunteers spotti ng eagles from a wooden observati on deck along the river, to the organizati on that now inhabits a 15,000 square foot interpreti ve center that greets 75,000 visitors each year from around the world.

“The story of the Nati onal Eagle Center illustrates the power of community working together to make great things happen” says Nati onal Eagle Center Executi ve Director, Rolf Thompson. Au-thors CJ Jacobson and Peg Bauernfeind capture the community feeling in A Vision Takes Flight. Through interviews with early supporters and volunteers, they tell the story of how the vision came to be what is today the Nati onal Eagle Center.

2014 has been a landmark year for the Nati onal Eagle Center. We celebrated our 25th year as an organizati on. Originally founded in 1989 as Eaglewatch (sti ll our

corporate name), we have grown from a group of committ ed volun-

teers helping visitors view eagles from an outdoor observati on deck, to the world-class interpreti ve center you know today. This anniversary and the publicati on of A Vision Takes Flight: A History of the Nati onal Eagle Cen-ter 1989-2014 were opportuniti es to look back and see how far we’ve come, but also to consider how we will conti nue to soar.

This year we launched our fi rst new permanent exhibit since our grand opening in 2007. Masters of the Sky: Raptors, Flight and Migrati on broadens our educati onal reach and helps visitors understand the diversity of raptors that share this Upper Mississippi River habitat.

2014 also marked the 10th annu-al Wintering Golden Eagle Survey. This groundbreaking project has liter-ally changed the range maps for golden eagles in the Midwest, by documenti ng a regular wintering presence here in southeast Minnesota and the surrounding bluffl ands. We are excited to conti nue to expand the world’s knowledge of this majes-ti c species through conti nued surveys, fi eld observati ons and tracking of individual birds with satellite transmitt ers.

As we look to the future we can see that there is more to do. In keeping with our strategic prioriti es to extend our edu-cati onal reach, we are developing curriculum based lesson
