Oaklands, Waterlooville, Portsmouth and St Columba’s, St Albans Four young people and their teachers travelled with CAFOD on a media trip to experience what life is like for young people living in the slums of Nairobi. Emet, Theo, Holly and Lara, along with their teachers Stephen Jones (St Columba’s in St Albans) and Mugeni Sumba (Oaklands, Waterlooville), learnt how young people are using sports as recreation to escape the poverty and violence around them. The students have been featured on radio and in newspapers, and have written blogs sharing how they have been affected by the experience and the actions they will continue to take in raising awareness of and support for CAFOD’s development work.

St Benedict’s, Colchester At the Years 7 and 8 mini mission day, Peter Jones and Kate Cook, CAFOD Volunteers, ran a workshop based on “All to play for”, one of CAFOD’s exciting new Olympics-themed activities (available from October 2011). Similar to netball, teams have to score points but there are obstacles to get around, linked to the causes of poverty. They also had to make their own ball to play with, out of plastic bags, similar to those used in Korogocho, the fourth largest slum in Kenya’s capital city Nairobi.
