PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEDear Colleagues,

On behalf of California Court Reporters Association (CCRA), I am proud to present our 110th Annual Convention! This year our convention will be presented virtually for the VERY FIRST TIME! Like everything else this year, things will be a little different, but we are certain this convention will be a high-quality educational opportunity and loads of fun. We hope you will join your colleagues from across the state and beyond for what is sure to be an exciting weekend!

Instead of our usual “breakout sessions,” this year’s attendees will have the opportunity to attend every session! We’ll all be together in one virtual classroom, and each session will be designed to educate all facets of our profession and be of interest to everyone. You won’t find yourself debating which session to attend, and you won’t be sorry you missed a session in favor of another one. We’ll all get to be together and experience the same awesome presentations! Each evening has a special event planned so that you won’t miss out on the social aspect of convention either. We’ve got all the bases covered!

CCRA is California’s largest association representing ALL reporters, and we’re one of the largest state associations in the country. CCRA’s membership includes a wide range of professionals representing California’s official court reporters, freelance reporters, deposition firms, CART providers, captioners, stenography schools, and students.

As such, we are YOUR association, and we never stop fighting to preserve and protect this awesome profession of stenographic reporting. We count on your support at convention time! This is your opportunity to not only give back to your association, but to earn those CEUs, be educated by some of the best presenters in the industry, and virtually connect with your colleagues from the comfort of your own home!

Don’t miss out on this exciting event! Register now! I look forward to “seeing” you in October.

Sincerely,

Sandy M. Walden, CCRA President

SPEAK UP FOR THE RECORD: The Art of Interruption

The #1 vexing on-the-job challenge for reporters is the need to interrupt speakers to ensure the integrity of the record. Stories abound on social media that (1) people are speaking faster now; (2) some attorneys are clueless of the record they are making; (3) some quietly or blatantly disregard reporters’ requests to slow down, speak up, and not talk over one another; and (4) litigators who do not understand the crucial role reporters have to protect the record tell agencies not to send back those who interrupt “too” often. A reporter’s need and legal requirement to capture an accurate record creates a dilemma in which a choice must be made in the heat of the moment between uncomfortable alternatives: Interrupt, Drop, or Rely on Backup Audio Media—sometimes all day long. Since it is your duty to produce a verbatim transcript, your fear of incurring attorneys’, judges’ (and witnesses’) wrath by interrupting their “flow” creates an inner conflict which results in over-the-top stress; doubt about your writing ability; dropping; and/or reliance on audio, with devastating consequences if the file is corrupted. In this presentation, you will learn the “art” of interruption; how to overcome insecurity and defensiveness; quiet the negative voices in your head; calming techniques; and how to speak up for what you need while managing your emotions instead of their controlling YOU.

The Impact of Vicarious Trauma

This course will focus on understanding vicarious trauma, the emotional exposure that can occur from hearing and seeing other people’s traumatic stories. Listening to testimony and viewing evidence, like criminal cases involving horrific details, stories of child abuse, and even civil cases, can be traumatic. We will analyze how vicarious trauma can impact people in different ways, potentially creating problems that may cause a mental health condition or burnout. The goal is to develop professional awareness and to recognize the need for self-care. This course will be taught to facilitate a student-centered learning model, creating an opportunity for hands-on activities and discussion.
