Moray

Bishopmill Dental Practice and Glassgreen Dental Practice have opened in Elgin, taking thousands of patients from the NHS Grampian waiting list.

The recent bad weather was especially problematic for Moray. The picture below shows an almost ‘snowed under’ dental practice at Keith. NHS Grampian would like to say ‘Thank you!’ to all dental staff who overcame substantial challenges to keep practices open during the ‘big freeze’.

Aberdeenshire

Laurencekirk Dental Practice is now open and is taking on new patients. The team has been very warmly welcomed by the local community who are delighted that they no longer need to travel for dental care. Aberdeenshire also saw

Hitting the Target:

Congratulations to the interim Area Dental Committee which has successfully revised the constitution for the new NHS Grampian Area Dental Committee (ADC). The purpose of the ADC is to provide advice to NHS Grampian on key dental and oral health issues.

The interim ADC has met on a number of occasions and updated their constitution to reflect the changing face of dentistry throughout Grampian. New and innovative amendments to the constitution include the involvement of dental care professionals (DCPs) who are central to the delivery of care to improve dental public health.

To bring forward the formal election of the new committee members, an Annual General Meeting of the ADC will be held on the evening of Wednesday 24th March at the Aberdeen Dental Education Centre. The event is open to all members of the dental team in Independent, Salaried / Community, and Hospital sectors.

STOP PRESS! New Orthodontic Referral System

Orthodontic consultants and specialistsin Grampian have pulled together anew referral guidance system fororthodontics and this will be circulatedto all dental practices in Grampian in the near future.

New Oral Health Improvement Programme

NHS Grampian is pleased to announce a new Oral Health Improvement Campaign will be launched soon - watch this space for more information.

Number of dentists in Grampian on the rise

There are now 304 dentists working in Grampian. This exceeds the target set by NHS Grampian of 300 dentists working in the region by March 2010. The largest increase was in independent dentists, with 22 additional independent dentists working in Grampian between September 2008 and

September 2009. This is the largest increase in independent dentists in one year ever recorded in Grampian.

NHS registrations continue to increase

The number of new dental practices opening up in Grampian has brought a steady increase in NHS dental care, with

33,000 additional NHS registrations in thelast year. This brings the total number of

additional registrations since June 2007 to 61,508. Out of these new registrations48,369 were adults and 13,139 were children.

Despite the improvements in registration levels, child registration in Moray remains the lowest in Scotland with only

50% of children under NHS dental care.

Dental services in Moray have received a boost with the opening of the ten surgery Spynie Dental Centre in Elgin. The facility is expected to cut waiting lists in Moray and deliver outreach education for students from Aberdeen University. Moray has the worst NHS registration level in Scotland but children in Moray have the best levels of dental health in Grampian.

The Spynie practice began to see patients in November 2009 and will also be used as an outreach centre for all students visiting the clinic from the Aberdeen Dental School during their final year. Each group of students will complete their training with a minimum eight week placement during their final year.

Laurie Stewart, Dental Practice Manager in Moray, is now enjoying wonderful uninterrupted views across the Laich of Moray to Lossiemouth after working at various locations since he first accepted the post. Laurie started work

Prior to the formal election of the new members, Prof Jim Newton, Director of Aberdeen Dental School, will give a short presentation on Collaborative Working where he will look at opportunities for all sectors of dentistry in Grampian to work with the new Dental School.

Invitations with full details of the evening, including election procedures, will be sent out by NHS Grampian shortly.

If you are a dentist, hospital consultant or DCP and want to be a part of the process or just want to keep your finger on the pulse, then why not come along?
