Radio for Cardiology Campaign

KICX 106 and 104.1 The DOCK first pledged $500,000 to support the purchase of a cardiac catheterization

lab to be installed at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre. After raising over $450,000, they have decided

to double their previous commitment and raise a total of $1-Million!

Currently, the closest care is in Newmarket, which is outside the 90 minute gold standard for treatment for

many Simcoe Muskoka residents.

The gold standard of cardiac care means receiving treatment in a cardiac catheterization lab (cath lab) within

90 minutes of having a heart attack. The closest cath lab in our region is at Southlake Regional Health Centre

in Newmarket. Unfortunately, this means most Simcoe Muskoka residents live outside this critical window

of opportunity. In fact, Simcoe Muskoka is the only region in the province without advanced cardiac

services. As a result, every year more than 3,500 heart patients must travel to centres outside the region for

lifesaving cardiac care.

We can do something about it!

By installing a cardiac cath lab at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, most Simcoe Muskoka residents

will have access to lifesaving cardiac care within the critical time period. This will save lives and offer

treatment closer to home. LCI will help equip a cardiac catheterization lab as part of a future advanced

cardiac care program at RVH.

The equipment in a cardiac catheterization lab allows for advanced cardiac diagnostics and interventions

such as coronary angiogram and angioplasty, giving patients access to faster treatment, a shorter hospital

stay and less travel time.

Hearts & Minds Inspiring care...

The need for: Advanced Cardiac Care

You can’t get lifesaving cardiac care in this region. Last year 3,500 area heart patients had to

travel outside Simcoe Muskoka for diagnosis and treatment. This means we are the only one of

Ontario’s 14 Local Health Integration Networks (LHIN) without an advanced cardiac care

program. Having to travel for cardiac care is detrimental because when it comes to a heart

attack, time is muscle. The longer you wait for medical care, the more damage to the heart.

The gold standard of cardiac care means treatment within 90 minutes of having a heart attack,

yet 60 per cent of residents in Simcoe Muskoka live outside this critical window of opportunity.

Travelling to another region for this advanced care takes patients away from their home.

In locating an advanced cardiac program at RVH in Barrie, most Simcoe Muskoka residents will

have access to lifesaving cardiac care within the critical time period.

The need for: Women’s Cancer Services

The success of the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre gives us the ability to support

women with enhanced services including screening, diagnosis and treatment for ovarian and

cervical cancers. Currently women must still travel outside the area for many aspects of their

care.

RVH has been designated a Centre of Excellence. This means women from throughout Central

and Northern Ontario will receive specialized care closer to home. With the cancer centre, much

of the infrastructure is already in place to provide advanced care and additional preparations are

currently underway, including mobilizing a top-notch clinical team. Offering

comprehensive women’s cancer services also requires gynecologic surgical

equipment, supplies for coloscopy, and a future brachytherapy treatment suite.

The need for: Research

RVH has a strong history of innovation and leading-edge practice which has helped us attract

and retain the brightest and best healthcare providers. A commitment to supporting research

will help us continue this tradition by creating a culture of inquiry and innovation to promote

better knowledge and ultimately, better outcomes for patients.

The need for: Child & Youth Mental Health Services

Alarmingly, there are no in-patient health services available to children and youth in this region. This means children and youth experiencing a mental health crisis are inappropriately admitted to a pediatric unit or to inpatient adult psychiatry – a unit that is not designed to care for the region’s younger patients. Even more alarm-ing, sometimes they are sent home with a long term referral because there are no appropriate services available at RVH.

Ideally children should be treated in an outpatient setting. However, children in crisis require specialized caregivers to fully support the child and their family. An inpatient unit for short term assess-ment and crisis stabilization is necessary and this inpatient program will act as an anchor for an expanded range of outpatient services to fully support families.
